Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Manchester United.

The Red Devils largely exceeded expectations in the Premier League in 2020/21 as they finished runners-up to their cross-city rivals.

They became only the fourth team in English top-flight history to go a full season unbeaten away from home, but some indifferent performances at Old Trafford suggest that improvement is needed if they are to mount a serious charge for the title next term.

Perhaps hit harder than most by the lack of fans in stadiums, United won just nine of their 19 Premier League home matches, as they failed to beat two of the relegated teams and only defeated two sides in the top half of the table.

The campaign culminated with a UEFA Europa League final loss against Villarreal, but despite a frustrating end, the word ‘progress’ feels like a fair assessment of their season.

We’ll delve into United’s numbers in the article below but remember that you can conduct your own FPL research into the Red Devils with our comprehensive Opta player and team data in our Premium Members Area.

THE ATTACK

The Complete Guide to FPL Triple Gameweek 35

Attacking wise, United ranked second for goals scored but just sixth for shots in the box and non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG):

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals732nd
Shots5264th
Shots in the box3246th
Shots on target2073rd
Big chances953rd
Expected goals (xG)60.904th
Non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG)52.236th

During the season, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side won 11 penalties, with Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) converting nine of his 10 attempts.

The Portuguese enjoyed an excellent first full season at United as he finished as the top-scoring Fantasy player with 18 goals, a further 14 assists and 244 FPL points.

His 121 goal attempts ranked third amongst all players, while his 20 big chances created and 9.67 expected assists (xA) were both league-leading totals.

Given his all-round potential for points, and the fact United have one of the more favourable opening schedules, it’s no surprise that Fernandes’ FPL ownership already sits at 41.9%.

Above: Manchester United’s fixtures Gameweeks 1-7

However, it is worth noting that his numbers did cool off a little during the final months, possibly due to fatigue given that Solskjaer insisted on playing him in pretty much every competitive fixture that United had to fulfil.

The Portugal international featured in 58 matches in all competitions last term, averaging just over 83 minutes per Premier League appearance.

Following his EURO 2020 excursions, Fernandes is set to return to United’s Carrington training base next week, but team-mate Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) may have to wait a while longer as it has been suggested that he will undergo shoulder surgery at the end of the month.

The England international’s form came under scrutiny during the run-in, but free from any complications next term, could he perhaps get back to his explosive best?

Solskjær was non-committal on whether or not he would undergo surgery when talking to the press last weekend, but it is clearly something that needs monitoring, as a period on the sidelines would have huge implications for FPL managers.

Without Rashford available, Mason Greenwood’s (£7.5m) early-season credentials may be given a boost. The 19-year-old was United’s stand-out performer during the final weeks of the season. In fact, six of his seven goals for the campaign, plus one of his assists, all arrived in his final eight outings. Having missed EURO 2020 due to a niggling injury, he could perhaps be one to watch if Rashford is ruled out for a prolonged spell.

Elsewhere, Edinson Cavani (£8.5m) will stay on for another year following a successful 2020/21.

Statistically, the Uruguayan ranked second amongst all forwards for big chances per 90 minutes, which does suggest that he might be a viable option for our forward lines in the opening weeks, at least until the Champions’ League group stages – and likely rotation for the veteran striker – begin in September.

Above: Forwards sorted by big chances (BCT) per 90 minutes 2020/21

The imminent arrival of Jadon Sancho, however, is surely where most FPL managers attention will lie, outside of Fernandes of course.

https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2021/07/03/how-does-jadon-sancho-compare-to-bruno-fernandes-and-other-united-fpl-assets/

It’s hard to speculate exactly where he will be stationed, at least initially, but if Rashford is indeed out, does it heighten the prospect of Sancho operating off the left?

It is worth noting that some of his best performances at Borussia Dortmund arrived from that flank, where he can cut inside onto his stronger foot.

However, he may well be needed on the right, an area United struggled to create from last season.

Martial/Rashford are the threats to Cavani's gametime and they are both unfit.

Sancho is a playmaker first. He will create loads of chances for Cavani.

Possibly. Will keep tinkering. Team news and preseason games will also tell us stuff. If Cavani is in full training, starting preseason and doing everything, I might well do it. Sancho - Cavani double up.

Fair enough. Not sure I agree, unless you're talking about total FPL points.

To answer Bobby's question. Arsenal have poor fixtures GW2 & 3, so in general I wouldn't really pay more than 5.5 for a player that I'd likely be benching.

But if you're planning to play them regardless, then it's a close call. Right now, it has to be ESR since he's basically certain to start that important, good first fixture.

Honestly, I have little knowledge of either. I do know that esr is flavour of the month. The fact that arsenal knocked back 30+mil for a 20 something year old tells me that they have high hopes for him.

They do, but this is a comparison with Saka, who will likely get a big ol' raise at some point too.

FYI, I don't think 30m was anywhere near enough to pursuade Arsenal not to pursue a new contract with ESR. But it would have been something they'd have to consider if ESR refused to sign. That would have been the point of Villa's offers in the first place, you'd think. He is hugely valuable to Arsenal, but so is Saka 🙂

Doesn't son normally do better without Kane? However, it should be said that it's no coincidence that son got his highest fpl score the same season Kane lead the league in assists. (At least I think Kane did?)

I do love an fpl talisman, and son will certainly be that if Kane leaves. Nice to see that spurs announced his contract extension also. Seems a no brainer if kane leaves.

Yes but I'd be dubious about reading too much into that without a very large sample size and massive qualifications.

Kane is such a central figure for Spurs (both in terms of goalscoring and, lately, creatively) that losing him certainly diminishes the team. Given he was also very much part of a partnership with Son, it particularly impacts the latter. And we have yet to see who Spurs would replace Kane with. And you have a new manager in the mix to who may change how the team plays or Sons's role within it.

With all those question marks I wouldn't pay 10m to start the season with a Spurs attacker. But hey, if other people think he'll do well then good luck to them.

Digne with no Gylfi and probably no James could be on all set pieces, and maybe even pens.

Good luck to ya mate. I'm just wary of Everton in general. Controversial manager, gylfi and richarlison at the Olympics could be unsettling factors in the club. Aye Toney looks good on you tube, but I can't see him getting those opportunities in the premier league. Hopefully you'll prove me wrong. If you like Toney on you tube, you'll love buendia.

You could equally point to other players who hit the ground running. Whether Sancho does or doesn't manage that, the Werner comparison isn't particularly relevant. They're very different players in very different teams.

Looks like he might do. Levy should just take 70mil and run. For the money they are touting, I can think of Mpabbe and Haaland. PSG or Dortmund will bite your hand if you offer 100mil +

I don't think Dortmund would bite anyone's hand off for that for Haaland. He has a 75m release clause next season and they don't intend to sell him this summer unless they get a crazy bid. He's one of the biggest talents in Europe and his agent literally went around Europe to all the teams that wanted him touting him to them trying to start a bidding war.

Just wondering on what people think of this.

    Sanchez
    Chilwell - Cancelo - Coufal
    Salah - Sancho - Mahrez - Havertz - Raphinia
    Watkins - Antonio

    Steele - Fofana - White - Obafemi

Noice! Even better if you could get Son in their somehow. Can lose Havertz or Marhez and another downgrade elsewhere.

Could gamble on Ferran Torres at 7m instead of Mahrez would give 2m then could probably squeeze Robbo + Son in maybe

Surely you can eek out Robertson or Trent somehow ? Downgrade Antonio perhaps and make one of your 4.5 reserve defenders a 4

I like the two 7.5 strikers gives options to hop on one or even two of Wilson/Kelechi/Toney/Jimiif they are firing.

Could downgrade a midfielder potentially. Mahrez to a gamble on Ferran Torres would give 2m

    Watchlist now numbers 62 players

It wouldn't be cheating if I also entered teams for my cat and daughter would it? If I had a friend I could enter a fourth team too. But there again if I had a friend I wouldn't play FPL.

I'll add a smiley next time

I'm having a ball preseason by looking at a myriad of what if scenarios. Best time of year and it's a shame to spoil it with certainties imo.

Perming 15 names from 20 is dull when you could be trying to get 15 from 60 odd.

Which Watchlist are you using ? The one in the sidebar of this site only has 39 players on it.

I use the watchlist on the FPL site - put together 3/4 drafts so far with variations and just add those players to watchlist there.

Imagine I'll trim it down to around 30 by season's start. Fairly consistent in only transferring in players I've monitored for 3/4 weeks - one way to avoid FFS RMT influence

    Harrison Salah Bruno ESA

Rate the percentage % of the following players being on penalties:
    1) Digne
    2) Pepe
    3) Son
    4) Mahrez
    5) Watkins
    6) Jimenez

      1. 2 (It'll be Sigurdsson > Rich > DCL > Digne)
      2. 30 (If Auba doesn't take or isn't on the field)
      3. 80 (If Kane leaves he will take them)
      4. 50 (No idea but he could be their new taker or else KdB...)
      5. 20 (El Ghazi and then maybe Grealish ahead)
      6. 80 (I think Jimenez takes them especially if Neves leaves)

Pepe will be #2 to Auba.
I'd say Watkins is 50/50 against Grealish.

27.5% of chances coming from the right is not uneven. The uneveness is the lack of chances from the middle. Poor article

How are people feeling about a Sancho / Bruno double up? I think Sancho will hit the ground running and adjust back to the premier league. Especially as the season progresses I see quite a few goals and assists. Same with Bruno. And with Bruno on penalty’s the possibly of Sancho getting penalty “assists” is promising. They will be United top scorers from a fantasy perspective in my opinion. What do you guys think?

Sancho won zero penalties last season for Borussia and never played in PL.
I understand the excitement but I'm going to wait and see before decide to spend 9.5m on him.

Probably smart idea to wait. I know with City he got no game time so no actual premier league experience. I do feel he had the physical stats and pace and creativity to be successful in the PL I’ll definitely leave room to maneuver him in with minimal transfers if needed

RM Draft Team.. All out attack.. !! 3-4-3

    Sanchez | [4.0]
    White | Coufal | Fofana | [Ayling] | [Kelly]
    Salah | Sancho | Son | Harrison | [Brownhill]
    Kane | Watkins | Toney

With only one bench player getting game time I think is a problem
Also I think that starting defense won’t get you much. Heavily reliant on 4 players in Kane / Salah / Son / Sancho. I would downgrade either Kane or Salah since ownerships will be very high and leaves room for 2 upgrades

    2. LangerznMash
      • 9 Years
      4 years, 8 months ago

Salah AND Kane takes up way too much of your budget. I think you have to swap between them depending on fixtures (upside chasing) and upgrade defence and Toney.

      1. Keith Kiely
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I think Toney is still a good shout for a budget striker and will get decent returns in comparison to his price tag. I know it’s though with newly promoted teams and always a gamble but I think he could go through a phase of good form and then level out at some point in the season in which case you can gradually use transfers to upgrade
