Fantasy Football Scout and Sky Sports Fantasy Football to join forces in 2021/22 1

Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to be partnering with Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season – bringing you even more content on the popular, free-to-enter game.

Our resident experts Luke Williams and Niall Murphy have already uploaded a two-part 2021/22 Sky season preview and will be recording every week throughout the season so you get the very best insight and advice.

This week, Niall – who has finished 3rd, 15th, 17th and 42nd in a stellar career – reveals his first draft and strategy to picking a Sky team for the crucial first three Gameweeks of the season, before the Overhaul kicks in.

Pre-Overhaul Strategy

Before we get into the detail of my team, I believe there are a few pretty fundamental principles to picking a successful pre-overhaul team in Sky Fantasy Football:

1.       Forget the rest of the season

With the presence of the Overhaul – which is effectively a forced wildcard after three Gameweeks – remember, you’re only picking a team for the first few games. Even if you like the look of Teemu Pukki at 7.7m or Billy Gilmour at 6.9m, with Norwich rock bottom of the fixture ticker, you’re effectively gambling on them to score goals and dominate the ball against Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester City. I’ll leave you to price that up with your local bookie, but it’s a punt that I’ll not be touching with a bargepole. My advice would be to avoid teams like Norwich, Leeds, Wolves and Burnley until after the Overhaul, with some exceptions, such as a cheap goalkeeper or even Raphinha (8.3m).

On the flip side, Aston Villa, Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Leicester lead the way at the other end of the fixture ticker and all boast proven and good-value Sky assets.  What’s not to like?

2.       Captains are king… And one of them is probably Egyptian

Of arguably more importance in Sky than the difficulty of fixtures, is the way they fall within the Gameweek. Looking at the matches, Liverpool, Manchester United, West Ham/Leicester and Arsenal/Brentford stand out as being either optimal or required assets for early-season captaincies. This is illustrated by the very first game of the season where Thomas Frank’s newly-promoted Brentford take on Arsenal in the only game on Friday night.

Now, neither Arsenal nor Brentford have a stunning set of opening fixtures, coming in at 18th and 9th respectively in the fixture ticker, but you almost certainly want to start the season with one of their players. That’s because you are able to bank double points for simply having an asset on matchday 1 – meaning Arsenal and Brentford have an effective 4-for-3 advantage over other teams. Bruno Fernandes (11.8) and Mohamed Salah (11.9) or another Liverpool asset look favourites for the armband on at least a couple of the early-season matchdays.

3.       Regular starters or bust

Put simply, you only have three Gameweeks to amass points. If there are doubts over a player’s fitness or security of starts after pre-season, at this stage of the campaign, I would encourage you to body swerve. The last thing you want to be doing is picking a player who either misses the first two or three games, leaving you pointless, or who forces your hand to make transfers in Gameweek 1, with only a limited number of weeks to compensate for the use of a transfer.

Of course, injuries happen, and my advice would be to consider each swap early doors on merit. I’ll give you an example. Two seasons ago, Alisson was crocked in the very first game of the season against Norwich. Transferring him out at that stage gave 3 Gameweeks for another goalkeeper to gain enough points to justify a transfer. I assessed that to be worth the move and his replacement, Jordan Pickford, kept two clean sheets out of three. Great. Now, if the injury happened in Gameweek 2, I’d be less inclined to throw a transfer at it, and would barely consider it if in Gameweek 3.

Anyone make themselves a ten commandments before the season kicks off? This goes on the wall in front of my toilet

    MY FPL RULES 2021/21

    1. Compartmentalise. FPL day or ZERO FPL day. Watch fewer games and more MOTD/2.

    2. Don't Panic. There's a higher probability of being very unlucky than of getting everything wrong Research is usually thorough, impulse is not. Trust your research because it probably wins over time.

    3. Team structure. Team structure. Team structure.

    4. Minimise decision making. Find a strong core and trust it

    5. Many hits do not pay for me over a season. Big time.

    6. Pay less attention to 'late news'. It leads to impulse decision making.

    7. Don't look up. Focus and keep your side of the street clean

    8. Don't f#*k with captains

    9. Your FPL chat doesn't want to hear you being a cry baby, so just don't

    10. Never, ever come on FFS on matchdsy

I find 3 perplexing, but I think it would make most people's commandments.

I think mine would start with:

      1. Have fun

And then anything beneath that must not flout it.

The general price points don't matter. All that matters the price points at which clusters of desirable players are found.

      1. Stay calm. See the bigger picture. You cannot control the outcome.

      2. Save the FT. Remember why you chose your current players.

      3. No boasting. Your self-worth does not come from FPL.

      4. No correcting/criticising others. Let them make mistakes.

      5. Enjoy it. It's just a game.

Something I learned last season was that "Bad outcomes do not always equal bad decisions".

I used to get upset when things didn't work out because I thought I had made a mistake, but in hindsight it was a decision I would make 10 times out of 10. So I would say my one commandment would be "Don't allow unfortunate outcomes to effect your mood. You don't control luck."

      1. Minimize hits as much as possible - 4 points is a lot

      2. Trust the fixtures - getting the best assets with the best fixtures is a delightful combo

      3. Pick nailed players - likes of Mahrez and Havertz no-gos for me when they can drop out any game. Players need to be on the pitch to score points

      4. Expected stats are an outstanding way of assessing players - npxG+xA/90 my favourite

      5. Defenders with set pieces, attacking threat and BPS magnet + lower to mid-priced strikers that are the talismans for their sides are favoured by me .

      6. Keep it simple - start strong by starting sensible. Template is good - it's made up of strong picks with great fixtures.

      7. Captaincy - pick the strongest asset with the best fixture. Bruno, Salah etc. These premiums have their reputation for a reason and should be relied on over random punts on social media that gain traction and usually end up failing.

      8. Players are not traps. Never, ever classify them as such. Each player is an individual asset with pros and cons and disappointing in the past does not mean they'll disappoint in the future.

      9. WC is a very important factor in your season - I'd like to play it in a fixture swing (I'm very fixture focused) and after I've had a decent amount of time to judge each team - 5-6 GWs at least, ideally. Otherwise I end up falling into unproven bandwagons that fall apart and cause worthless hits plus a loss of momentum.

      10. Have fun! FPL has a lot of luck and getting too mentally invested is a recipe for disaster. After all, we're only competing for imaginary points!

I’m in a similar boat. Got both at the moment but could be frustrating to have that much in defence if we don’t see a couple of clean sheets and attacking returns in the first few fixtures

In with both feet here. Giving them 3 weeks, if no decent returns then it's a rejig of the defence
It's far easier to downgrade them than get them in

    4. Gingerman

Def not, VVD only just back, same with Gomez, new centre back may need to settle. To much investment into an uncertain back line and no guarantee to hit the attacking numbers you'll need. Could be gold but TAA is more than enough for me.

I remember the same idea was fairly popular last season. Didn't work out too well for those that did.

Seems crazy to me to double up on a defense before the season is even underway. We have no data, we have no idea of starters, formations, fitness, form. Why take the risk so early. Better to make early transfers in forward areas surely.

Have seen someone mention Sanchez might be injured? Also concerns over Shaw starting GWK1.

Based on this is Henderson and Dunk a better bet than Sanchez and Shaw to start even though if all were fit the points cap is likely lower?

Maddison is a tempting one for me. Such a brilliant player, nailed, great eye for a pass and has so many appealing attackers in front of him to provide for. .42 npxG+xA is average though.

Barnes would be a shout if I wasn't concerned about him dropping out if they move to 3-5-2. Leicester's fixtures really good too!

He will get minutes for sure but uncertainty over Leicester formation; acquisition of Daka; poor end of last season; him being touted to a possible arsenal move (where he also wouldn’t be nailed) - too much uncertainty for me atm

Admittedly I say this tarnished having owned him for a chunk of last season where he generally disappointed me!

I first went on this site a year ago. I had no idea what a Fantasy Troll was when I saw it mentioned. Then I met Maddison in the second half of last season.

I'm trying so hard not to let negative experiences with individual players last season affect my thinking for this season but its so hard to forget how bad he was. Both him and Ricardo Pereira are firmly on my avoid list.

'Just as those who arent choosing any are potentially locking themselves outside top place. Gotta take some risks recognising the potential rewards.

One or two riskier picks are easy to move on with transfers and add a higher score ceiling to your fpl team'

Agreed - same here. Bruno only a must if you captn him. Price variance means upgrades all over team without him. Runtill first wildcard. Cheaper players will go up in value more and you can build cash to buy him back at wildcard.

With Rashford out and Martial up for sale I think Bruno is nailed to start every week. Bottom line is he's the penalty taker for Man Utd. That pretty much guarantees 10 goals a season on its own.

It’s funny watching peoole persuading themselves not to get robertson.
And some people say he is expensive comparing to others!
    Ok then.
Which defender is as attacking as these two?
Which defence/gk line is better than liverpool?
I see at least 4 clean sheets in first 6.
And don’t forget they both finished the season 0.3 higher than what they are priced now. Even without VVD.

Should be easy to score similar points with likes of Shaw/Wan biss/Digne/Dias plus cash.

I see only 3 CSs for Liverpool in best case scenario, could even be 1. I dont think any defense will keep more than 2-3 CSs over first 6 games anyway, least bother with defensive picks at start.

On a 1 for 1 it's true, but cash saved buys you two of likes of Shaw and Digne instead of Robbo and a 4.5

I wonder if Konate might be value as 2nd Pool defender and Shaw with the change.

It's funny when people so confidently predict the future.
So a guaranteed 4CS in 6 for Robertson, is it?
      Ok then.
Maybe someone who is guaranteed 3 clean sheets in 6 is worth a saving of 1-2.5m?

Even if your crystal ball is right, you don't seem to be playing FPL right.

Obviously it’s just my prediction and gessing.
And I’m not confident. People see that too that’s why they are paying 7.5 for taa but just a bit afraid to double up.
Yeah it worth saving if he is as attacking as robbo in a top team.
Robbo, Taa and shaw are best picks imo. And I am not confident!

Barnes feels like a risk to me. Just back from injury, an unsettled formation. Will he start to begin with? Just too many questions to throw him in from gw1 .

If you want to take a punt at 7m on a player that may or may not play then you could go for Torres. He plays for the best team in the league and has a higher ceiling.

I like that combo sir. Actually one of my first drafts had gross. Don’t need to convince me on son.

I think with gross…im worried about minutes. I know he takes corners and set pieces and had a good finish to the season but still worried about potter. He’s basically the poor man’s pep with how much rotation he has.

Anyone else getting keener on greenwood? For me he will start with martial generally out of favour and rashford crook - do Man Utd fans agree or think it’s to risky with chance of him not getting the nod ?

Main reason I like him is because it gets that higher price point in the mid field instead of 2 x 6.5 and also I think United have a big ceiling

I am keen, but he faces competition from Cavani for the central spot, and Pogba for the left wing. Surely, he'll get minutes considering the situation, but him not starting might become frustrating.

That 7.5m spot is such a key price point. Greenwood/Jota/Pepe/Torres/Barnes/Gundogun.

Of course I can't actually get to it with my structure. Need to downgrade a striker but there are no cheap ones that enable it... yet

      It's not bad at all.

I'm not a huge fan of 4-4-2 though. 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 all the way. And the reason is it gives you more straight swap options to hop on bandwagons.

If Pukki or Antonio suddenly start very hot you can only replace Watkins to get them and you might not want to do that if he's doing well too. Likewise for the likes of Bowen, Buendia etc.
