We’ve two more pre-season friendlies to report on from Thursday and Friday, as Liverpool and Newcastle United continued their preparations for the upcoming new season.

Leeds United also had a scheduled fixture but a ‘B’ team was sent to Fleetwood Town, so we’ve omitted that match for the Whites from this round-up.

Don’t forget to check out our comprehensive pre-season page for more information on the warm-up matches taking place ahead of Gameweek 1.

BURTON ALBION 0-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: Jacob Murphy (£5.0m), Joelinton (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Isaac Hayden (£4.5m), Ryan Fraser (£5.5m)

Newcastle United’s first-choice front two were both absent at the Pirelli Stadium but there doesn’t seem to be much concern about either player from the Magpies’ camp.

Callum Wilson (£7.5m) wasn’t risked on Friday night due to a “slight knock”, while Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.5m) has not trained in several days due to illness and sat out his second successive warm-up game.

With Martin Dubravka (£4.5m) injured and Karl Darlow (£4.5m) still recovering at home after testing positive for COVID-19 earlier this month, it was again Mark Gillespie (£4.0m) and unpriced Freddie Woodman who shared duties between the posts.

The unavailability of Wilson and Saint-Maximin saw Ryan Fraser (£5.5m) given an ‘out of position’ run-out alongside Joelinton (£6.0m) up top and both frontmen were among the attacking returns.

The much-maligned Brazilian ‘assisted the assister’ for Newcastle’s first goal, with Isaac Hayden‘s (£4.5m) fluffed effort falling kindly for the excellent Jacob Murphy (£5.0m) to volley home.

Joelinton then got onto the end of Fraser’s 47th-minute corner, having earlier been teed up by the diminutive winger for a shot that was cleared off the line.

Still in the 3-5-2/5-3-2 that Steve Bruce ended last season with, Newcastle’s formation is looking fairly settled going into the new campaign, with perhaps just one or two judgement calls on personnel to make.

The in-form Murphy – who almost scored a solo second goal – looks to have again secured the right wing-back slot with no sign of budget asset Javier Manquillo (£4.0m) in pre-season, although FPL’s irksome classification of him as a midfielder obviously puts a big dent in his appeal.

Newcastle United XI: Woodman (Gillespie 46), Murphy (Allen 83), Schar (Lascelles 63), Krafth (Clark 63), Fernandez (Watts 79), Ritchie (M. Longstaff 76), Hayden (Young 83), S. Longstaff (Lewis 63), Hendrick, Joelinton (Gayle 55), Fraser (White 55).

HERTHA BERLIN 4-3 LIVERPOOL

  • Goals: Sadio Mane (£12.0m), Takumi Minamino (£5.5m), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Mohamed Salah (£12.5m)

While many attacking players from Manchester United and Manchester City are only just returning to training now following belated summer breaks, Liverpool’s key Fantasy assets have been up and running for a while.

Thursday’s defeat to Hertha was the third pre-season outing for Sadio Mane (£12.0m), Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), each of whom are looking increasingly sharp ahead of Gameweek 1.

Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Diogo Jota (£7.5m) were also back involved against the Bundesliga side after a post-EURO 2020 breather but the headlines belonged to Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Joe Gomez (£5.0m), who both returned to playing action after lengthy periods on the sidelines.

Neither player covered themselves in glory with their roles for Stevan Jovetic’s second and Hertha’s fourth goal of the evening but the 22-minute run-outs were less about the result and all about getting the central defensive pair back on the grass again ahead of Gameweek 1.

Jurgen Klopp said of van Dijk and Gomez afterwards:

[They] started immediately well and usually we all know that the fourth goal is a clear situation which saw and defend well. But that’s it. I’m not sure, 260-something days for Virg and not much less for Joe they didn’t play football, so it’s nice to have them back. It was the first step, really important.

Nearly all are back, then during [the upcoming trip to] Evian they will pretty much all be back I think. That’s good and then we can really start preparing, involve them all, get used to each other again and all this kind of stuff. Then we have a tricky start away at Norwich, that’s how it is.

The Reds fell 2-0 down before Mane bundled home at the second attempt to halve the deficit and Salah beautifully teed up Takumi Minamino (£5.5m) with a superb backheel to restore parity.

Hertha restored their two-goal advantage before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.0m), again playing as the spearhead of the Liverpool front three in the absence of the holidaying Roberto Firmino (£9.0m), grabbed a late consolation.

The Reds ought to be in tip-top condition by the time their opening weekend clash with Norwich City comes around as they still have another four pre-season friendlies to contest.

Liverpool XI: Kelleher (Adrián 46), Alexander-Arnold (N. Williams 60), Konaté (R. Williams 46, Gomez 68), Matip (Phillips 46, van Dijk 68), Tsimikas (Robertson 46), Elliott (Jones 46), Keïta (Morton 60), Milner (Clarkson 60), Salah (Gordon 60), Minamino (Oxlade-Chamberlain 46), Mané (Jota 60).

Let's say Kane moves and you have Salah as well.
Who are you going to captain?

    Weeks 1 - 6 it isn't much of a problem deciding, only a week 5 decision.

Weeks 7-12 is when City and Liverpool sorting by rotation (attacking) have the WORST match: I.E they have easy games at the same time and harder games at the same time.

That's when Chelsea's fixtures improve and they have the best match against both City and Liverpool. So maybe that's the time to drop one premium, spread the funds and for gw 7, 9 and 11, captain a Chelsea player.

I like the theory of having only one premium because you can only captain one and maybe you can use the funds better but maybe week 7 is the time actually to go for it.

Under Tuchel I don't expect high numbers from mid/forwards. Since he took over in january, in all those remaining PL games only 2 players had a brace. Havert and Pulisic. I prefer Chilwell over mid/forward options.

I feel he's either going to leave or surprise us all and outperform Cavani/Greenwood

          Could even be plausible.

Not sure how long Cavani contract runs for but if it's just one more season I don't see MU wanting to offload Martial necessarily if that leaves them with just Greenwood next time around.

Cavani a full season I believe, but the issue is how long his legs hold out. I would expect him to keep going fine until Rashford is back at least, so I don't think Martial is first team. However, keeping him in reserve in case any one of Sancho, Greenwood or Cavani get knacked is probably a sound move.

I think the plan is Haaland when his clause kicks in next year, hence the Cavani one-year extension.

Haaland adores Sancho, so the board are probably hoping he'll be a big lure, along with reuniting with Ole.

            1. Moderately content penguin

              5 years, 7 days ago

              That would make sense

Though I suspect Haaland will want to make his next move to a team that is closest to winning and/or dominating the league. United may step up this season of course but as it stands in terms of trophy winning United would be a tad sideways for him.

They'll need to earn Haaland if they want to fight off City Chelsea and quite possibly Liverpool.

I'm sure many would have said the same about Varane and Sancho. United have crazy pulling power.

With respect neither are remotely in the same category - Haaland is a galactico. He can pick and choose any team in the world.

If he hasn't been training then he won't be anywhere near match fitness. Two weeks without training makes a world of difference. And he isn't the only one I have question marks over for GW1. Utd have one friendly before the season starts and Fernandes hasn't played a minute in pre-season. Plenty of other players from other clubs in the same boat.

Even if some of these players play in the first couple of game weeks they will be off the pace compared to their teammates. Could be some disjointed performances from the bigger sides.

This is a really interesting point, DCL another with 0 minutes. I'd love to see an analysis of whether pre-season minutes has an effect on performance in the first few weeks for past seasons.

I'm surprised its not getting much attention on here. I have had Fernandes since my first draft but it's hard to justify keeping him if he doesn't get minutes in pre-season.

I wonder if the return of fans with have a positive or negative impact on teams this season.

Still not a lot of love in Newcastle for Bruce and some of the performances last season rank up there with their worst in the Premier league era.

West Ham had a great season, but they are another set of fans who might get on the players' backs if not performing.

    Will be interesting.

Hmm not sure it will effect Wilson necessarily. Wilson recently posted on twitter about how it was good to play in front of the fans for the first time and he scored that game. He is ruled out of the next friendly with a knock. I don't have him personally, just better options at that price point imo, but then I'm a pessimist when it comes to my own team. He's not a bad pick by any measure.

Yep clocked that booing of Bruce

Newcastle have yet to buy anyone yet and they are running out of time to get anyone new who will be fit for week one - unless its Willock who is already part settled there.

Look at their squad minus Wilson and ASM and it is frighteningly thin. Lose week one and it's not hard to see things going south there with two tricky away ones in 2 and 4 before they get Leeds in week 5.

aye the fans hate Bruce and they haven't been scared to show it in the past with Souness, McClaren, Carver, Kinnear etc . Add in frustration with the ongoing takeover saga and if we lose a few matches the atmospheres will be horrible.

Liking the look of my latest draft, any reasons I should tear it up?

    Sanchez

    TAA / Shaw / Digne

    Salah / Sancho / Mahrez / Raphinha

    Watkins / Antonio / Toney

Bench: Foster / Ayling / White / Brownhill

    £0.5m ITB.

Gives me some change for an early transfer when those 0.1m increases can hurt the most. Ayling and White rotate so I always have a good bench option in case a starting player has an awful fixture

I’m really struggling on the Bruno conundrum. Do I or don’t I? Wary of missing his hauls but having him and the Salah, Trent (both nailed on my draft) and Robbo really cripple the rest of the team giving me Obafemi on my bench.

Might be worth the risk if you can spend the 0.5 well.

If TAA is out any 4.5 is a probable 2 pointer given that you can't pick and choose fixture. The more serious loss would be having a forced transfer the next week possibly.

Actually part of my thinking is that this set up is a hedge against early WC

        It's essentially choosing price points.

Son can be Mahrez Havertz Sancho Grealish
        Bruno could be Kane
5.5 mid can be Digne Shaw

Think it's pretty flexible especially if like me you are fairly hit happy. Multiple 6.5 7.5 makes life harder as I see it to move cash round.

Mo, runs, TAA are cost of entry & obvious

Personally had Coufal & Watkins for over two thirds of the season last year at 4.5 & 6.0

They did good, but didn’t leave enough good memories to outweigh the doldrums periods they both went through, just really bored of them basically, and can’t bring myself to pay 5.0 & 7.5

That isn’t necessarily a good thing either mind you as I wouldn’t put anyone off them, they’re just not for me this year - I got sick of defending Watkins all season every time he went a game without a goal & explaining how he’s actually quite a decent 6.0-7.0 forward every time he went a game without a goal the “WATKINS IS AWFUL”, “WATKINS IS DREADFUL”, “WATKINS IS A CHAMPIONSHIP STRIKER” nonsense was out in force on here without fail - and I’d imagine it will be again soon enough (and it’ll still be wrong)

Even that pillock from FPL Family was jumping on that particular bandwagon the idiot, insulting him & calling him talentless on Twitter

Dallas I don’t agree with at all as a 5.5 mid I think he’s doomed to around 110-120 points unless he somehow blows his XG out of the water by about 100% again, and even then he’s only looking at 130-140 (way less than Soucek’s 150 which was disappointing at 5.0, let alone 5.5)

Dallas in a rotation is asking for even more trouble imo - introduces the risk of not even getting the 110-120 out of him

Antonio is class, but also glass

Son is class, another one I had from GW1-GW36 last year - but want to see how Nuno is going to use him before throwing 10.0 at him. If he’s a focal point/Kane replacement, and on penalties etc - I’ll look at getting him in - not starting with him

      Buendia - agree

I think you’re exposed to Nacho, Raphinha, Bamford & Toney - these guys I see having excellent chances of big, big seasons, so much going for them all

Dallas/the 5.5m mf is up for grabs I agree.
Nacho/Raph/BAmf/Toney could be gold I agree. That team is just for first 3 weeks and I will reassess with a WC after wk 3 and obv consider the ones you mention.

A friend of mine who is brand new to FPL but an absolute maniac when it comes to fiddling with stats; came to me with his proposal of how to go about FPL. One thing for sure, he never listens to anyone so I had no influence on his thoughts. (Quite refreshing actually)
The first thing he said was he does not consider the budget to be 100mil. He says it is 36mil based on all players are 4mil or more so it is silly to think different.
He said the captain pick and price changes messes up his brain so he took an attitude as follows:
He readjusted prices for example Shaw being 1.5mil, Havertz being 4.5mil and Salah being 7.5mil.
This "blew my mind" a little because I started to think the % of real cost is far higher with the premiums (Salah 18.75% of total value, instead of 12.5%)
My immediate retort was "but Salah will get double points". He said every captain does but he realigned calculations to halve the captain cost.
In a very simplistic way he calculated his first draft based on points per 90 minutes. His bias being Leeds United who he supports he told me Meslier at 1 mil gets him 154pts for 35 games being 4.4 points per game costing him 2.5% of his budget.
He accepted he had to spend all the 40mil on his players to get optimum results but concluded by saying he will spend top$ on a captain but think very carefully on buying premium players who generally can't compete with other players on offer.
I told him the game is far more complex than that. He replied by saying "WELL, ITS A START ISN'T IT"

      Budget is £40m right? 100-(15*4)?

Thinking of your finances like that really illustrates how important price changes are.. later in the season £4m in profit is actually 10% of your "liquid" team value.

This is how he made me think. Also he said if prices drop then it is like taking .5mil rather than .1mil. That is a massive difference comparing .5 in every 40 compared to .5 in every 100mil.

                    It’s really not dude

Use Soucek as an example - he smashed it out of the park last year at even cheaper - 5.0(!) with 150 points…

Yet was one of *the* most frustrating assets in the game, and regularly criticised/slated on here.

Mainly due to the unpredictability of points

Dallas is doomed as a 5.5 mid imo unless he gets some gargantuan luck and goes 60, 70, 80% above his XG (which isn’t impossible) but those arent the type of points I want to chase after personally

      Min value GK = 4.0
      Min value DF = 4.0
      Min value MF = 4.5
      Min value FW = 4.5

      Therefore budget is 100 - (2 GK x 4.0) - (5 DF x 4.0) - (5 MF x 4.5) - (3 FW x 4.5) = 100 - 8 - 20 - 22.5 - 13.5 = 100 - 64 = 36m

But doesn't this push you towards cheap at the back because you can get Sanchez / Steele, White, Ayling, Dier, Digne and Shaw for 5.0m which is only 14% of your budget.

I would suggest his team will end up something like:

          Sanchez
          Shaw - Digne - White - Ayling
          Salah - Fernandes - Son
          Antonio - Watkins - Bamford

          Steele - Dier - Brownhill - Gilmour

Maybe he goes DCL instead of Antonio or Sancho instead of Son or upgrades Steele.

I posted this at the bottom of the last article so I'll try again!... 🙂

I'm sure I came across a comment here a couple of weeks ago that suggested that there was a possibility that the Manchester United Bruno could morph into the Portugal Bruno if one or two signings came to fruition.

    Am I talking pish?

Is your question about you remembering something that didn't happen or is the talking pish thing about whether or not Bruno turns into Portugal Bruno?
