With a plethora of £4.5m defender options available to FPL managers this season, I thought I would have a look at a few to see which ones can be relied upon to deliver.

For this article, I will be using the fixture sensitivity chart developed by @FPLGromit on Twitter as well as stats from the Premium Members Area.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

Brighton – Leeds

A popular rotation pairing I’ve seen is Brighton and Leeds: the fixture run on paper looks fantastic but let’s have a look at both teams to see how they fared defensively in ‘easier’ fixtures.

The chart shows that Brighton registered below 1.0 expected goals against (xGA) versus ‘easier’ opposition and even as the opponents got tougher, they still managed to restrict them to 1.0 xGA – so they are almost a ‘permaplay’ defensive option.

Now we look at Leeds: they kept it tight in the so-called easier fixtures but as we see the opposition Soccer Power Index (SPI) go above 75, they started approaching the 2.0 xGA territory, which indicates they are very much a fixture-based defence rather than a permaplay one.

Was there any balance towards home/away though?

Given that my £4.5 def is mostly going to be 1st sub, would the Brighton defence double-up bother you?

    Sanchez
TAA - Cancelo - Digne (Veltman - Sierralta)

If you think Sanchez gets cleansheets than so will Veltman. Isn’t an issue in my mind, in fact many will only have Sanchez so you’d benefit when you play both.

Cheers! Had a draft where Sanchez was Meslier instead, but the compromise was Harrison instead of Raphina.

I can't see me starting Veltman in any game, however, I do have a few players in my team prone to rotation, so Veltman/Sierralta will often auto-sub in.

Yeah so the annoying thing will be you’d be hoping for a Sanchez cleansheet yet having Veltman on the bench. Could get super frustrating. I’d switch personally.

Something I’ve been weighing up as well. The issue is I see Sanchez as the best 4.5 keeper due to his clean sheet potential, but I also want Veltman for the sweet rotation with Ayling. The question is when you bring them together do I want the double up? That’s something I’m not 100% sure about, but I’m not sure which of Veltman and Sanchez I’d drop though

If you are set on going with a £4.5 GK, I would suggest stick with Sanchez and drop Veltman. I am on the fence whether to go with Sanchez + Raphina, or Meslier + Harrison. This in turn determines Veltman's fate in my team.

I pondered this for a while and have swapped out Sanchez for Pickford (for now, but could easily switch back).

Who are you left field overperformers this season? Mine:

    1- Lucas Moura (0.5% owned)
    2- Lanzini (0.2% owned)
    3- Ziyech (0.7% owned)

Really really fancy him to do a lot better this season. Said it a few times on here now - I think him and Bamford will share a lot more minutes this season.

El Ghazi may benefit from Grealish's departure and he is outstanding value based on his pts/90mins last season.

No chance I take a gamble on either of them that early on though. Will wait and see how things play out.

I'm not a stats expert by any means but I don't really like those charts.

Both axes are using modeled data and the sample sizes are quite small, aren't they? Also, the pace of change in the Premier League means much of that data will be out of date by now. Didn't Leeds change their approach in the second half of the season, reducing the relevant part of their sample even more?

Yes I was thinking that this morning when I heard the news. United got lots of very soft penalties where VAR just confirmed there was contact. If contact alone isn’t enough then you’d expect that they’d have gotten less.

He has mostly played for our youth as RWB. He can play there, or RB or RM.

I expect he may be used for all three at Southampton (less so RWB as they don't play that formation).

The Saints tweet announcing him defined him as a full-back. So you would imagine that's where they aim to have him primarily.

I think Salah.. Salah is primary Capt and have penalties.

More point, higher xgi, higher ppm so its default Capt but I'll consider how Mane looks in pre season before push the button tough.

No definitive answer on that. My current dilemma is TAA and a 4.5 non-playing striker, or Antonio and a 4.5 playing defender. Over the season TAA will come out top easy, but in the early games up to my WC it's not at all clear.

      1. Moderately content penguin

Will he? Might do would be my answer.

Jiminez has two seasons over 180 points. Bamford has managed 194 too.

Think it's a lazy assumption on here that the Liverpool 7.0s (effective price 7.5 and 8.0) are automatically going to outscore the forwards. There are precedents from each of the last 3 seasons where the forward was similar or much much better value than the defender if you check starting prices.

What do you think of my potential 5 City draft…?

    Ederson
    Dias / White / Coady
    KDB / Grealish / Raphinha / Sarr
    Kane / Bamford / Toney

    Sanchez / Lowton / Janssen / Harrison

This is my current set up, however if my team is not showing 5 sky blue shirts on the Friday night, I do have a back up draft.

Could be an interesting season, however I’ll probably bottle it. 🙂

Sorry mate, I don't think this is very good.

      Reasons;

Omo and Davis would be your subs 2 and 3. Meaning you have one rotation option with White.

You've also got Cavani who's still abroad, Sarr who just got promoted and Mahrez who won't be nailed in a couple weeks.

My understanding is Cavani is back in training as well. Faces competition from Greenwood and Martial but should be ahead of them.

A second playing sub though would be good.

For the start of the season:
    1) Antonio or DCL?
    2) Meslier or Pickford?
    3) Chambers or White? (14 other starters)

Thanks both. I was on Antonio too.

      Agree it's a fine line between Meslier/Pickford.

#3 is where you've listed the sensible option but my biased gut & fact I want to name my team 'Chambers of Secrets' doesn't want to agree 😆

Haha love it, as someone who kept Werner for far too long last season though, don't be driven too much by the name!

I started with Antonio and do fancy him, but he's not in my current draft as I've gone for 2 up top with Toney, Watkins and a 4.5 fodder to make room for Son/Salah/Bruno/TAA

Thanks I'm on this it's just the balance of having 1 Arsenal and 1 Leeds rather than 2 Arsenal that was having me thinking of the switch to Ayling. But in both cases they are mostly going to be benched

    Sanchez • Steele
    Trent • Robertson • Coufal • Veltman • 4.0
    Salah • Bruno • Mahrez • Raph • 4.5
    Antonio • Toney • 4.5

I like it but that bench could be found wanting. 2 double defences is a bit risky for me, I'm never brave enough to double up in defence but it could really pay off with Pool and Brighton's early fixtures

A, 100%. Leeds have injuries at the back and they concede a lot away. There will very likely be a lot of goals in that game and Bruno will surely be amongst them. Southampton were the whipping boys last season and United scored 12 goals in 2 games against them.

How on earth you got to that conclusion is a mystery?

A premium defender, and 2x 5.5's that are in most sides.
The two premium mids, and 2x midfielders.... (could easily be Raphinha and Buendia)
        3 up front, including DCL...

2x 4.5's on the bench (ofc Lamptey to switch)......

....but your comment is just...well, it wasn't worth me commenting on but too late 🙂

Agree with everything you said. I think it's well balanced. Jota and ESR could easily be two other mid priced midfielders.

Yeah, they're your 'punts' aren't they, and fair play...

I'd be a little worried about the rumours about Maddison to Arsenal for ESR's minutes.... he's a difficult price point to replace really as you'd need to move someone else on.... but I see why you'd want to start with Jota.

I suppose you weigh up the pros and cons. You don't get that mid if you don't sacrifice a striker for a non-playing 4.5.

Never imo. He's picked players with solid fixtures. Rare that you're having to depend on bench players especially during 1st half of the season.

Unlikely 2 players are going to have to come off the bench, but if Fofana got injured I wouldn't want to use a transfer on him, and then they'd have 0 bench options.

Relying on bench fodder to fund a better starting 11 has served me well in previous years - Personal preference i guess.

Back 4 is template. Midfield is nice... getting Sancho alongside the others is a potential differential

Wilson & Toney perfectly reasonable shout and modestly non-template too.

Bit of a misunderstanding on my side, sorry.

On the other hand, if you are asking a question then you're asking for someone else's opinion, and generally people say what's in their teams because that's what they think is best.

Sure mate. I think people should stay strong on what they believe is the best pick rather than swaying based on other people's opinions. I don't think you can get it drastically wrong if you're observing ffs regularly anyway - Famous last words!
