I’ll start with a short story. This time last season, Chelsea were spending money like they were Disney and, as a fan (of Chelsea, though I do like Disney too), it was hard not to get caught up in that excitement and to want to be part of it in every way possible. Of course, for me, this included picking as many as possible in my Fantasy Premier League team and, as a result, I tripled up on Chelsea assets with Timo Werner (£9.0m), Kai Havertz (£8.5m) and Reece James (£5.5m) all featuring in my Gameweek 1 team.

Of course, Chelsea went on to become champions of Europe, thus proving me 100% correct in my beliefs and to be a person of quite unnatural foresight and wisdom. So, thanks for reading, and tune in next time when I’ll be talking ab-

Okay, while Chelsea did indeed become champions of Europe, this eventual success was not necessarily reflected in their early-season performances or the output of their players from an FPL perspective. Don’t get me wrong, they weren’t terrible by any means, even the much-maligned Timo Werner was averaging about 5.0 points per game up until Gameweek 10. The problem was, they didn’t deliver consistently, sustainably and, crucially, as much as more established players (Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) was kind enough to make this point early on and immediately punish me for not picking him with a Gameweek 1 hat-trick).

Salah

Even then, I held on to my Chelsea assets, despite their declining output and emerging line-up uncertainties. I justified this to myself by their good run of fixtures which, surely, would get them back on track. When that didn’t happen, I convinced myself that, since other people were ditching their Chelsea players, the best thing for me to do ‘strategically’ would be to hold on to them so that, when they did eventually burst into life, they would offer the best possible source of differential points, thus propelling me up the table.

Of course, the opposite happened, Chelsea assets declined further, both in terms of points output and in value, which in turn reduced my options for transferring them out. The net effect was that I’d set the foundation for what was to become my worst ever fantasy football season.

So what happened here and what can we learn from it?

Why no one is looking at Rodrigo? 6.5 striker almost nailed in an offensive team

'Almost nailed' is quite generous. He could be fantastic if he plays regularly. We will not know though for sure until the games actually start.

I had him in my team last season and in 1st draft team for the new season, but with tough opening fixtures he's unlikely to stay in.
I do think he will play a much bigger role and score more goals for Leeds this season, especially if they don't hold onto Raphinha

I looked at him closely, but the last preseason match will make or break. He has been getting good minutes in pre season but is playing deeper, almost as an 8 or a 10 and hasn't gotten any returns thus far, their supporters aren't happy about it either. Would be too worried to start with him if the season started tomorrow, one to wait and see on.

Wilson is Newcastle's talisman and I think Greenwood is a great punt. Likely to start up top and loves a goal.

DCL may be hindered by Rafa... Barnes might not even start GW1.

So, basically, the article says - go for the template team to begin with and don't overthink it.

Maybe I am fundamentally flawed in my approach to FPL, but I just can't force myself to go full template and call it a day. I would find that too boring. Probably a middle ground is best, but who knows.

You’re overthinking, go with the team that YOU believe is highly likely to score you the most points in the first 6 - 8 GWs while at the same time being flexible so you could jump on emerging options, if you’re team ends up becoming template then so be it.

    4. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

There’s no such thing as “full template” per se - there are far too many combinations of popular players for that

There’s a pool of about 10 players per outfield position, and 5+ goalkeepers - which is going to give thousands of possible XI’s & squads

If you find yourself veering outside that pool, you have to ask yourself why, and be comfortable with the answer - if it’s a “hunch” or just plain old boredom, just do it with eyes wide open & be aware of the consequences

I will give you an example. Players I currently have in my team, that I consider to be the "riskier" picks:

Cancelo, Chilwell, Mahrez, Greenwood/Jota. There is also the lack of Bruno.

Would you consider those "outside of the pool" and "being different for the sake of being different"?

Yeah I'd consider all 4x to be outside the pool to be sure

Chilwell actually has a decent ownership at 13%, but that's still about 2.3m of of 2.6m that are avoiding him, the others are even more left field

I couldn't pass judgement on them being different for the sake of being different though, only you know why you're picking them, I just know why I personally (and millions of others *aren't* picking them)

Currently going Sancho over Bruno but will see nearer the time what the expectations of Sancho starting the first game is as I think he will simply hit the ground running, but it allows me to bring in Son, Mahrez also an option.
Gone strong at the back, the potential is there for attacking points.

Dunno if this has been covered but is Amartey now a potential 4.0m starter? Remember him getting the odd start last season whenever Leicester were down a defender.

How do people think Villa will line up with Ings? 2 stikers or does one of Ings/Watkins start on the bench?

      Watkins on the wing

Would be odd to play Ings alone and move Watkins out given how well Ings / Adams worked together

Are you saying Villa should abandon the system that most of their players are used to, and adopt Saints' system?

Presumably 1 upfront, then they can play Buendia as a 10 & 2 cdms
