We round up the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from more of Saturday’s pre-season matches in our latest Scout Notes article.

Already we have provided a summary of the Community Shield and a recap of games involving Brighton and Hove Albion, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Norwich City and Watford.

Now we focus on Manchester United, Everton and Brentford.

Don’t forget to check out our comprehensive pre-season page for more information on the action taking place ahead of Gameweek 1.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

MANCHESTER UNITED 4-0 EVERTON

Toney fitness update as 1
  • Goals: Mason Greenwood (£7.5m), Harry Maguire (£5.5m) Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m), Diogo Dalot
  • Assists: Luke Shaw (£5.5m), Nemanja Matic (£4.5m), Fred (£5.0m)

Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) said he was “ready” for the upcoming Premier League season after scoring a superb free-kick in Manchester United’s 4-0 demolition of Everton on Saturday.

The Portuguese schemer had a disrupted pre-season thanks to his involvement at Euro 2020 but his country’s relatively early exit from the competition at least allowed him more of a break than United’s English contingent, and he looked sharp in an hour-long run-out against the Toffees.

“I’m feeling ready, honestly. It was a good break for me, I enjoyed it. I’ve come back and had two weeks of training and I’m feeling fresh and ready to start the season.

“Of course, we know now that that game [Leeds] is the one that counts for the league. Today was about doing the right things, taking some minutes in the legs, start doing the right things and try to put in what we are training all week in Scotland.

“Now we have one more week to prepare for the game and we have to prepare well because it’s a different game, different intensity, different team, different way to play. We know what to expect and I hope we can have the same result as today.” – Bruno Fernandes

A glimpse of the much-hyped new 4-3-3 shape was in evidence at Old Trafford (even if it was much more of a tweak to the usual 4-2-3-1), with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said to be keen on evolving United into a more attack-minded unit this season and moving away from a double-pivot in midfield.

It’s still early days to see how this newfound approach affects last season’s highest-scoring FPL asset, as Fernandes was as advanced against the Toffees as he usually he is.

United didn’t even have to draw on their attacking nous from open play to establish a 3-0 advantage; Mason Greenwood‘s (£7.5m) opener was gift-wrapped and Harry Maguire (£5.5m) headed home a Luke Shaw (£5.5m) corner before Fernandes conjured up his dead-ball brilliance.

Greenwood was originally stationed on the right of a United attack spearheaded by the fit-again Anthony Martial (£8.5m), although moved centrally after half-time.

Absent again were Edinson Cavani (£8.0m) and Jadon Sancho (£9.5m), while Dean Henderson (£5.0m) and Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) also missed out because of Covid-19.

Solskjaer said:

“Jesse, he feels okay, and hopefully it’ll stay that way but when you get the positive test you’ve got to isolate even if you’re feeling well.

“Dean, he was positive early on and then he’s negative in his testing but he’s not felt as energised or sharp as he has done. So he’s still fatigued and feeling the after-effects. So, you never know, you’ve seen so many effects of this virus, so he’s got a few days still to rest and then we’ll check up on him.

“The medical with Raphael Varane [still] has to be done. He’s isolating at the moment. He had to wait for visas, so unfortunately that took a few more days than expected but we’re going to follow the protocols and the rules, so it’s taken a few more days than we hoped for.

“Jadon is in for Monday and hopefully, then he’s in decent nick and can be involved [against Leeds].” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Everton were deprived of the services of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) and Richarlison (£7.5m) against United, with the former suffering from a minor knock and the latter tasting Olympic Games success with Brazil.

That meant that lively new signing Demarai Gray (£5.5m) co-shared central attacking duties with James Rodriguez (£7.0m) in Stretford, with Benitez trialling a 4-4-2 again.

The ex-Liverpool boss bemoaned:

“Today, we didn’t have our strikers, the others did their jobs but it is totally different when we have specific players, especially good players, up front. They are not here, so that changed the dynamic of the team a little bit.

“We have to improve in some areas but the main thing is to be sure we have the team together, then we can manage the way we want to play, with the players who can normally make the difference.

“We want to play like we did in the [earlier pre-season] games. Trying to create chances, trying to move forward quickly.” – Rafael Benitez

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka (Dalot 60), Lindelof (Tuanzebe 60), Maguire (Garner 69), Shaw (Williams 60), Matic (Fred 46), van de Beek (Pogba 46), Greenwood, Fernandes (Andreas 60), James (McTominay 69), Martial (Mata 46).

Everton XI: Pickford (Begovic 46), Coleman (Kenny 60), Keane (Holgate 77), Godfrey (Mina 77), Digne, Allan (Davies 60), Doucoure (Delph 46), Iwobi, Rodriguez (Gordon 46), Townsend (Broadhead 68), Gray (Dobbin 78).

BRENTFORD 2-1 VALENCIA

  • Goals: Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m), Frank Onyeka (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Sergi Canos (£5.5m)

Brentford Thomas Frank gave a positive fitness update on Ivan Toney (£6.5m) after Fantasy Premier League’s most-owned forward missed the Bees’ final pre-season match through injury.

Speaking after he witnessed his side see off Valencia 2-1, Frank said:

I don’t think there is almost anything that can keep him out of the game on Friday night [against Arsenal]. I’m sure he’ll be available and ready to play.

For the second match running, Frank opted for a wing-back system – a strong indication, perhaps, that the Premier League rookies will be sent out in that set-up when Arsenal visit south-west London on Friday.

New signing Kristoffer Ajer (£4.5m) was part of the three-man central defence alongside Pontus Jansson (£4.5m) and Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m), the latter of whom underscored his threat from set plays with a headed goal from a Sergi Canos (£5.5m) corner.

The former Celtic stopper impressed at the back, with Valencia restricted to few efforts on target; the visitors’ goal stemming from a ball behind Ajer and Canos, something the big Norwegian is keen to avoid happening again:

“We will go back and learn from this, how to shuffle in a back three and how to press forward.

“If you look at the chances that a top side from Spain create here, there was almost nothing if you take away the goal. We delivered a top performance.” – Kristoffer Ajer

Cano and Rico Henry (£4.5m) were tasked with the wing-back roles, with FPL midfielder Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) ending up being stationed ‘out of position’ up front alongside Marcus Forss (£5.5m) – a likely Toney placeholder – in a 3-5-2.

This was a role that Mbeumo excelled in during the Championship play-offs and he had a chance to wrap up the scoring on Saturday, producing a tame effort when racing free of the Valencia backline late in the game.

Frank Onyeka (£5.0m) came on at half-time to form part of the central midfield three and lashed home the winner from the edge of the box.

With Norwich City and Watford’s pre-seasons not going smoothly, the Bees just might well be the best-prepared of the promoted trio of clubs heading into Gameweek 1.

Brentford XI, Raya, Ajer (Bech 74), Jansson, Pinnock; Canós, Norgaard (Bidstrup 82), Janelt (Peart-Harris 87), Henry (Roerslev 74), Ghoddos (Onyeka 46), Mbeumo, Forss (Dervişoğlu 74),

I have 0.5 itb so can upgrade to a 6.0 maybe Sarr or Willock. Think ESR starts but will get subbed & not get too many goals, maybe the odd assist but he is 5.5 so that's what you'd expect really.

as a city fan i think torres is growing on pep if city get kane he will not get many because he is playing that central role mostly but if they do not he will definitely get more minutes than last year

Who are the best 5.5 defensive options other than shaw

I like the look of pereira but would Cresswell be the better? I’m not keen on Everton so don’t want Digne

This. In a 4ATB formation (which West Ham have been using in pre season) I think Cresswell is well worth the 0.5 over Coufal. Great asset imo

Looking at fixtures... Jota would be the one. I am a Liverpool supporter. He's likely to start aganist Norwich as hes been starting alongside Mane and Salah in our last two friendlies (and scoring). Jota is going to explode this season. Gundo is a good pick but I would lean towards Jota.
I have actually had a draft where i've had a midfield five of:
          Bruno - Salah - Jota - Raphina - Gundo.
But I'm preferring Barnes over Gundo.

Really stuck between Ings and Mbuemo/ESR or Toney and Barnes. I like Villa fixtures and Ings but the issue is I'm a bit stuck with Antonio as my only other forward if Toney starts slow.

Nice team, looks like you can do alot with TAA funds. Prefer Jota over Greenwood. Barnes over Toney. If Toney doesn't perform you have no one to switch to. If Barnes has an issue you've got Benrahma, Willock, Harrison, Raphinha, Sarr etc
Personally think Toney is over pipular. He's too expensive for a bench player and I don't really want him starting every week. If I'm wrong then even at 6.7m he's easy to get.

The 6.5 - 7.5 mid bracket is so tough to choose from.

For me, Salah Bruno Benrahma are almost certain to make the midfield 5 which leaves 2 slots in the 6.5 - 7.5 bracket.

Currently on Gundo + Barnes myself

    Thoughts?

Season xG of 2, had a great start passing with 4 assists in first 5 but then only 4 assists in the remaining 33 matches. Offered nothing defensively or carrying the ball…

He wasn’t much of a goal scorer but helped create and advance the ball into attacking and dangerous areas. The decline was due to the decline in Norwich form in general, bad finishing, and some injuries. I think he was quite decent at carrying the ball. Think that he often did well keeping the ball and often getting past his man when Norwich was being pressed

I’ll admit I didn’t watch them much the second half of the year. I don’t hate him as a player, just not worth the selling fee or the lineup spot, don’t get all the buzz just because he was able to destroy the championship again

                        Yes, very

I like Watkins, ings, Benrahma and el Gahzi in a bubble, but I don’t quite see how they aren’t going to be terrible at linking play..

Ings is the only one I’d consider from the start

Isn’t benrahma on west ham? Or am I getting him confused with someone else?

That’s fair enough then. Ings could still be alright but if Buendia struggles then I’m not sure they’d be worth owning, especially since you’d need to transfer them out after the first 3. I personally think they’ll start well though so I’m going to start with ings. Maybe Buendia as well although right now I have raphinha over him as I don’t think it’s worth using a transfer after a few weeks to remove him

Very similar to Mitrovic from last season. Although I'd be willing to put money on Toney doing better than Mitrovic I agree, not too keen to start with him.

Think I wouldve started with him if it werent for all the great midfield options emerging in the last few days though

I’ve had him in the whole time but I don’t know why honestly.

Pens, championship goals, blah blah blah.. seems a slight fella, Mbeumo at 5.5 and oop seems just as good..

Yes I have Mbuemo - looked him up and his stats along with some highlights just to see his style of play.
Does look intriguing for the price, think I’ll have him and Pukki as my low risk GW1 differentials (rest is fairly template)

That first price drop is so impactful; Toney will drop after the first match if he doesn’t score. Mbuemo fails and you can sit on him until you want to change

Hold go either way. If he scores he’ll go up and if he blanks he’ll fall. I’m not touching as I feel there’s better options elsewhere. Tons of proven players are only 1 more. also are many better options in the midfield such as raphinha or Buendia

For me hes too much of an unknown as are Brentford

      Pros are
he scored a lot last season in the championship
involved in a high percentage of his teams goals
the team is built around giving him chances
Seems very confident (as per his sky interview)

      Cons are
It was his first season in the championship (if im not mistaken)
new to the league as is his team
      Is a slight injury doubt
His confidence could be shattered if hes not able to play at this level like many strikers before him that come up talking about ripping up the league only to be spanked back down when they realise the level is far higher than anything they've experienced before. Can be a very rude awakening.

Brentford and Toney could prove to be real gems and do very well but odds would be they will find it very difficult to be truly competitive

Thoughts on how Europa league will impact west ham? Haven’t seen any news of them buying a striker. Is that good for Antonio since he won’t have any competition/rotation or is that a worry that he might have limited due to the Europa league

As a FPL player ive only really had one good season where i broke 25k. Rest have been rubbish as much as i pay attention to these forums and make my own decisions. Often my approach is to go in with a team and make transfers as and when.

This is the first year i have made a rough plan on what i want to do and when based on who i think i will do well and "attacking the green fixtures"

Of course many things change, form, injuries etc so it is a rough plan but hey for the first time it feels good to have a plan!

Everton look a mess right now. I had Digne in early drafts, but with Richarlison away, DCL's injury status in doubt, and the change to a new manager I just think it's best to step back for a week or three and see what's up.

Why would Leicester fans know?... Do you think Brendan Rogdgers has had a meeting with them all and told them?...maybe rung them all up?

They have no idea...and what’s more Brendan Rodgers may not even know yet.

Here is what BR said about him.

“It’s not an easy position to come in and play especially against a talented team like Manchester City. I thought he did great. He always has done for me, in any position, whether it’s in a back three, a back four, right-back, wherever. He’s such an honest player”

Sounds as good as we’ll get for a 4.0 pick. Fingers crossed.

          Yeah he sucks, ignore him

Don’t get mad when people give you the feedback you have solicited from them.

1/3 of your budget on 3 players and no backup players means you have a lot of mediocre picks. It’s almost statistically impossible for you to do well unless you correctly predict returns across the squad and avoid big returns from Kane, Bruno, Kev, etc. you also don’t have flexibility to get other bigs in without multiple transfers.

Lots of stuff on here over the years about not rotating keepers, it basically never works over the long term. Hauls come unpredictably, better to use it on a 5.0 and set/forget.

This year it was true but 2 season last ago someone made a post about how if you rotated Henderson and some other 4.5 gk who I can’t remember you could have gotten like 30 more points than either got by themselves. A lot needs to go right for it to work but it can work

Pope outscored any rotation 2 years ago, Emi did last year as well

I forgot about Pope. It was him and Henderson I think that could have rotated to get close to 200 points even if you make the wrong calls on the 50/50s. A lot can go wrong doing it but it can work

There’s been a mix. Some have shown positives some have shown negatives. It depends on the gk you pick more than anything else. They need to do well against the bad teams but be very poor against the good teams for it to work. This season, Sanchez looks the best 4.5 go to me and Brighton didn’t do too much worse against the better teams so I won’t be rotating

If you ask for advice, accept what's given whether it's criticism or not, quit criticizing the poster's own team unprompted in return. What were you looking for, someone to give you a pat on the back and make you feel good about yourself? Lmao, so silly.

Which pairing would you rather have?

    A. Barnes + Toney (have Ings and Obafemi)
    B. Benrhama/Harrison + Antonio

This community is really ggoing crazier and crazier as the start to the season approaches.
Lots of risky rotation and injury prone have entered RMT's and templates.
Mahrez, Jota, Greenwood, Antonio, Ings, Barnes, Benrahma, Amartey, Tsimikas are all wildcards that might turn out great value or they can destroy your team.
On top of that peoples teams are a couple of pulled hamstrings away from having to wildcard.

Having said that, i'm also one of the people with those players in my team.

Not too bothered about it tbh. Will learn how teams will set up early on and how the new managers and newly promoted teams will play. Will also know who’s on what team as the transfer market will close. There’s a good fixture swing as well in gw 6/7.

Don't think Antonio, Barnes or Ings can be counted as wildcards ; Greenwood early doors should be OK, same with Mahrez. Jota is a know rotation risk for sure. Amartey and Tsimikas are both both fodder so . . .
