Captain Poll

Our captain poll has launched for Gameweek 2 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

You can cast your vote via the embedded poll below or on the widget of our home page.

Fresh from a 17-point haul against Norwich City and with a home game against Burnley to look forward to, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is unsurprisingly the early front-runner for armband duties among our voters.

Only two current Premier League sides have kept fewer clean sheets than the Clarets this calendar year.

There is equally predictable support for Bruno Fernandes (£12.1m) after his hat-trick against Leeds United and ahead of Manchester United’s trip to a Southampton team who have conceded more Premier League goals than any other club in 2021 – nine of which arrived when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side last met the Saints in February.

Elsewhere, there is the small matter of Manchester City’s home clash with newly promoted Norwich City; the uncertainty over who Pep Guardiola will select in his starting XI is perhaps the reason why Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) and co don’t feature more prominently in the embryonic results of our vote.

Son Heung-min (£10.0m) and Tottenham Hotspur are away at Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Danny Ings (£8.0m) and Callum Wilson (£7.5m) will be licking their lips at opposing defences who conceded a combined seven goals in Gameweek 1.

Our captain poll will be followed by Tom and Joe’s Tuesday video which discusses the runners and riders for armband duties in more detail, while Captain Sensible will be published on Friday.

Obvious save this week but what would you do week after with 2 transfers?

    Martinez
    TAA Shaw Coufal Tsi
    Salah Bruno Son Benrahma
    Ings Toney

    Foster White Gilmour Obafemi

Make one FT and have two for GW4 after the international break and transfer window close.

Interesting quote from Moyes on Benrahma:

“I think you can see a slight change in his play and his development, it can’t always be the Said Benrahma show it has to be for the team, that is what we’re interested in. At moments we need his individual ability to beat people, score us goals and make assists and he did that today.”

Early doors but I’m not reading that too kindly

He's still a massive rotation risk and if they go back in for Lingard he's a complete no go.

Haha that to me is the old manager trick of trying to keep make Benrahma work hard and not let him get too big for his boots. While also talking up the team ethic it is a team game etc.

I believe Moyes said similar stuff about Lingard last season?

It's a good piece of information to put in the decision-making cauldron.

Just not sure it holds enough weight by itself to change the colour. Need more pieces of evidence pointing the same way.

That is as close to a Moyes compliment as you get. I read that as he was too selfish last season (he was, shooting from low percentage areas etc) and he has adjusted his game and is now what we want.

Sounds more like a challenge to Benrahma to continue as he is.

My transfer plan is hold in GW2, make one FT in GW3 then have two to play with after the international break for GW4.

Gives some flexibility for injuries/returning players and any deadline day transfers that might wreck any plans.

With Salah and Bruno in my team, Salah captain this week, Bruno in GW3 and GW4. GW5 and GW6 to Salah. Might throw a cheeky triple captain in one of those home games and save my bench boost for a double game week

I agree and with double GW I can see Bruno and Salah on the bench for one of them not coming on unless they need a goal plus with games like Burnley, Newcastle, Palace, and Brentford coming up for the guys you could get a few goals. I would need 3 goal contributions to make it worth it though

      2. Robbo8ball

Bench boost effectively gives you 4 extra players for the gw (albeit weaker bench players) TC gives you 1 extra players points. Bench boost is much more powerful especially if you plan to set up your bench properly.

As said above the big guys will prob play one and rested in the other for TC. Bench Boost with a good bench on a double game week will give me more value I feel due to the rotation that will happen that week whenever a double game week happens

Not sure on the rumour spreading policies and defo not creating a storm - however it came to light that Raphina could miss GW4 to Liverpool. It seems Salah and others (Alisson, Firmino etc) could also miss out a few games.

Alisson, Fabinho and Firmino are at risk of missing Liverpool's trip to Leeds United, but also their first Champions League group game and the home game with Crystal Palace on September 18, while also threatening involvement in the League Cup third round.

In short the article says, and it may not be true. However it states:

Salah, meanwhile, has been included in the Egypt squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Angola and Gabon. The first game is in Egypt, which like Brazil (Alisson, Firmino issues) is on the red list, meaning Salah would have to hotel quarantine on his return but due to the earlier dates of Egpyt's fixtures he could be back for the champions league opener.

The players can refuse to go with no penalty. But the clubs cannot stop them if they decide to go, as it is a Fifa WC qualifier.

That's why I fluked the Benrahma points this weekend when i had Raph with 30 mins to go.

I might just do Salah to Son in GW3 if Salah is confirmed to be playing

      I think it's Gilmour.

A 4.5m mid on set pieces is a rare thing. I doubt you'd want to triple on Norwich either.

Thought Skipp looked like he belonged in the Spurs midfield. Not sure how many returns to expect but I think he might get the minutes.

Moder came on for 20 minutes and got an assist - Brighton always struggling for creativity. I had him as my preferred 4.5mid before settling on a cheap forward instead.

Would also keep an eye on Allan at Everton.

Not convinced that Torres starts over Jesus.

Also Liverpool at Burnley is a good fixture - I’m trying not to move good performing players with good fixtures (Jota) unnecessarily.

I think if you want a City asset that Cancelo is a good idea. Only way for that to happen would be moving TAA for me.

Walker might come in for Mendy on the other side.

I like that Cancelo is a chance for both attacking and defending returns. And at 6.0 is way cheaper than any of the attackers I’d want (KDB or Mahrez).

Breaking up a long term plan to attack a single fixture whereby the team you are backing have yet to score this season, dont have a settled starting 11, have injuries to key players, unfit players with no preseason behind them, are slow starters and playing an unknown quantity of a team. What could go wrong eh.

As is always the problem regarding City assets, who the hell starts? And after many had a great GW1, who do you drop?

I'm steering clear of City until there is a 'must have' player. Otherwise, they're too much of a minefield.

Banking the FT, so I've two for GW3. Could ship out Werner (not saying there's inevitability with the guy, but he's better than we're seeing) and Jota for Lukaku and I guess A.N.Other. Kovačić, Norgaard, whomever. A benchable asset as needed.

Home to Palace, who were utterly dire during pre-season. He'd played well over the summer and was fit. I previously had DCL but DCL had played 0 after the Euros so might not have started. DCL was also flagged yellow briefly.

Anyway, the aim is to have the full 3 strikers playing week in, week out. And to upgrade to Lukaku once that was sorted. Werner had 18 attacking returns last year, Salah 28... seems closer than you'd think, right?

I am a Bru No team but I am sticking to my guns. Planned weeks in advance. So I am trying to stick to the plan a BB gw1 squad used in rotation until gw7.
Also back of my mind will Sancho in mean the points are spread more at Man United?
Plus I agree Southampton and Newcastle are good fixtures. But to me Wolves, Villa and Everton could be tough by the time Man Utd play them.

Maybe I am just kidding myself. I thought it while I posting it!
I went Vardy instead of Bruno. It nearly worked to be fair but nearly never won the race. Vardy got a yellow and Barnes did not see his runs when he could have got another two.
Vardy will definitely be my Captain gw3 v Norwich - it will be interesting to see who ends up the best captain that week
        Son, Bruno or Vardy

I think Sancho will do more to aid Bruno in scoring more. They will probably assist each other a few times but more than likely Sancho assisting Bruno and I expect that a lot. Bruno will end with more fantasy points but Sancho will be a respectful alternative if you were to go with Salah, Kane, or Lukaku at the same price bracket

Wolves could be a big score for United. They aren’t as defensive now. United blew past Everton in preseason so could be plenty of goals there too.

Tarore is an awful finisher though. Gets shots but can’t hit a barn door. I think Sarr would be a better pick in a few game weeks.

Well you see if you want the real top ranks in fpl you have to try something different. What is the point in trying to copy everyone else? Ok it did not work fully. But to me Vardy looked great and was only let down by his teammates.
ESR and Tierney had great games but the same thing happened let down by their team-mates and no main striker.
Plus the BB offered me a safety net of sorts it was not far off working really well.

There is bound to bound to be be a few gameweeks where a Bruno blank or just an assist creates panic articles 'time to sell Bruno'? Or a Lukaku hat-trick 'how to fund Lukaku' and so on

How could anyone possibly know how effective or ineffective Sancho will be when he hasn't played yet. We can only really gamble on the information we do have and that's that Bruno is central to everything United do and is the bomb.

True enough but I was thinking in terms of fpl points spread. Which is what happens at Man City when there are many good options.

Although when fit De Bruyne is by far their best option. It's the same with Bruno (aka the hightest FPL point-scorer in the league last season).

What exactly am I salvaging? I finished on 95! 😀
Admittedly I was annoyed with no Brighton clean sheet and not getting Jota instead of Buendia. But I am pleased enough with how it went. Plus on a DGW my first eleven will not be spread thin now, With the inevitable no shows from rotated players of the big sides for others.

His points tally was great, but going Bruno or Son-less is going to hurt over the course of a full season.

The BB chip saved his ass, but it can’t help him the rest of the way now, so he’s living on a false economy.

And yes, you have to do some things differently to climb the ranks in FPL, but I’d suggest not having 2 of the 3 consistent 200+ point scoring mids in your team is probably not the best way to do it.

Tbf though, the noise this time was fair enough. Raphinha isn't going to play in GW4 and probably GW5 and he had a bad GW1. The mistake was probably not to chance him for Harrison etc and keep Son, not to not make the transfers.

    Sanchez
    Dias / Shaw / Tsimaskas
    Bruno / Salah(c) / Benrahma / Pogba
    DCL / Ings / Toney

Done a real knee-jerk thing trying Pogba out this week just in case he runs his form for another two games or three before reverting to average scores. I do think I should be expecting an 84+ GW even though that consistency for the season won't stick through the season but for GW2 and 3 I expect lots of people to be getting high scores

I also predict this season's winner could get a record-high number of points. Have a funny feeling it will be a crazy scoring season and that was my thought before GW1

Went without Bruno and was gutted with his hatrick obviously (also got a massive 4pts with my risky BB, but there we go!). However, I still got 95, which is pretty similar to loads in my ML with Bruno and Salah. Which suggests that the money saved by no Bruno actually covers his haul elsewhere in my team. Any others feeling optimistic about the options available by going Bruno-less? Or Salah-less as that would have resulted in the same way.

Well like yourself I went without Bruno and bench boosted,
It got me 15 points and I got the same overall score as you did.
Schmeichel saved me with his 9 points.
Similar to you I believe going with going without Bruno means a stronger overall squad and it only a question of moving your squad around at the right time based on fixtures.
My main gamble was getting Vardy instead of Bruno because I believed he offered better value and his gw3 fixture gave me a good captain option.

For instance in my BB exit strategy I have planned to bench Tierney and ESR for gw3 and 4. I have 1.0m in the bank to cover price rises until I wildcard gw7 more than likely.

In the coming gameweeks many Bruno owners will be moving off him anyway to get funds elsewhere Lukaku/Kane and so on.

Nicely put. It certainly gives more flexibility in jumping onto form players as I'll probably have a player already in that price bracket to switch from. Although will need to save a transfer to jump on Lukaku/Kane, just as someone with Bruno would anyway.

I don't know do you play snooker? But I thought of the fpl players as reds. It is up to me to leave as many potential options of easy reds as possible.

So I worked backwards from my BB giving potential options to get to certain gameweek and the likely benches I would have. So I would have no benching headaches.

It was a calculated risk not a punt. As I got 15 which is about the average for BB. Plus I was thinking long term it will be far easier for me to set up a DGW team now rather than having to worry about rotation. And no shows

Its always crazy how 2 people can watch the same thing and have different opinions. I thought he looked promising, I would be surprised if he didn't score 10 plus goals this season. Which is a good return for a promoted striker.

I think it showed that he might not be a great option against 'bigger' sides, at least from an FPL perspective.
Played great though, but FPL is obviously rewards differently than a real game.
I'd wait to see how he's played against a side Brentford fancy having a real go at, but against the big boys that first game suggests he would be less value in FPL
