The upcoming September international break could have ramifications for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers with regards to player availability.

There are two separate issues at play here, one predictably involving coronavirus and the other to do with World Cup qualifying fixture times in South America.

GAMEWEEK 4 (AND GAMEWEEK 8) LATE ARRIVALS

Brighton Burnley 9

Two extra World Cup qualifying dates have been added to the back-end of the September and October international breaks for South American countries.

This follows the postponement of qualifiers in March 2021 and the necessity to now play catch-up.

What it means for Fantasy managers is that any Premier League player representing a nation from South America will face a later-than-usual arrival back to the UK, plunging their availability (or at least, their match-readiness) into doubt in Gameweeks 4 and 8 – the two Gameweeks that follow the next two international breaks.

PRE-GAMEWEEK 4 (SAT-MON 11-13 SEPTEMBER)

The exact timings for the October international break haven’t been announced yet but will likely follow a similar pattern.

FPL PLAYERS/TEAMS POTENTIALLY AFFECTED
  • ASTON VILLA: Martínez (ARG), Buendía (ARG)
  • BRIGHTON: Mac Allister (ARG), Alzate (COL), Caicedo (ECU)
  • CHELSEA: Thiago Silva (BRA)
  • EVERTON: Richarlison (BRA), Mina (COL), Rodriguez (COL)
  • LEEDS: Raphinha (BRA)
  • LIVERPOOL: Alisson (BRA), Fabinho (BRA), Firmino (BRA)
  • MANCHESTER CITY: Jesus (BRA), Ederson (BRA)
  • MANCHESTER UNITED: Fred (BRA), Cavani (URU)
  • NEWCASTLE: Almiron (PAR)
  • SPURS: Romero (ARG), Lo Celso (ARG), Sanchez (COL)
  • WATFORD: Sierralta (CHI)

The potential absences of Edinson Cavani (£8.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.0m) in Gameweeks 4 and 8 would likely boost the first-team chances of Mason Greenwood (£7.5m) and Diogo Jota (£7.5m) at Manchester United and Liverpool respectively.

The same could be said for Ferran Torres (£7.0m) with regards to Gabriel Jesus (£8.5m), although Pep Guardiola has any number of versatile midfielders who could plug the ‘false nine’/attacking spearhead void.

Richarlison‘s (£7.6m) air miles will be a concern to the legions of new FPL managers who brought him into their side after Gameweek 1, with Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m), Emiliano Buendia (£6.5m) and Raphinha (£6.5m) among the other popular Fantasy assets whose names are listed above.

It should be said that Liverpool and Leeds square off on the Sunday in Gameweek 4, with Everton in action a day later, giving the likes of Firmino, Raphinha and especially Richarlison a bit more recovery time.

The Toffees’ Gameweek 8 match is also on the Sunday, in a possible boost to Richarlison’s owners – but we’ve more possible bad news to bring you on that front.

PLAYERS IN QUARANTINE IN GAMEWEEKS 4/5, 8/9 AND 12/13?

من لدي أفضل وأسوأ جدول مباريات لبداية موسم 2021/2020؟ 1

The UK government’s current coronavirus guidelines state that any individual arriving back from countries on the ‘red list’…

“…must quarantine in a managed quarantine hotel for 10 full days from the point of their arrival. The day of arrival in England will be treated as day 0.”

There are dozens of nations on the red list, including all of the South American countries listed above plus numerous in Africa and Asia.

Last year, during the height of the pandemic, Premier League clubs were allowed to withdraw their players from affected international squads – but it is unclear whether they still have the power to do so.

And so, certain FPL assets returning back from international duty in September, October and November could feasibly miss Gameweeks 4/5, 8/9 and 12/13 due to the quarantine guidelines listed above.

We are painting the worst-case scenario out here and it’s possible that the powers that be and the Premier League clubs may come to some sort of alternative arrangement before we get to the September international break, whether that be national team bubbles or a shortening of quarantine periods on the production of a negative Covid-19 test.

The next review of the UK’s travel restrictions is on August 25/26, which may tell us more.

It’s a situation well worth monitoring as, along with the myriad South American players we’ve already named, the likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) and potentially even Michail Antonio (£7.6m) could also be caught up in the drama.

FPL PLAYERS/TEAMS POTENTIALLY AFFECTED
  • ARSENAL: Elneny (EGY)
  • ASTON VILLA: Martínez (ARG), Buendía (ARG)
  • BRIGHTON: Mac Allister (ARG), Alzate (COL), Caicedo (ECU), Mwepu (ZAM), Tau (SAF)
  • CHELSEA: Thiago Silva (BRA)
  • EVERTON: Richarlison (BRA), Mina (COL), Rodriguez (COL)
  • LEEDS: Raphinha (BRA), Helder Costa (ANG)
  • LEICESTER: Soyuncu (TUR), Daka (ZAM)
  • LIVERPOOL: Alisson (BRA), Fabinho (BRA), Firmino (BRA), Salah (EGY)
  • MANCHESTER CITY: Jesus (BRA), Ederson (BRA)
  • MANCHESTER UNITED: Fred (BRA), Cavani (URU)
  • NEWCASTLE: Almiron (PAR)
  • SPURS: Romero (ARG), Lo Celso (ARG), Sanchez (COL)
  • WATFORD: Sierralta (CHI)
  • WEST HAM UNITED: Masuaku (DRC)
  • WOLVES: Jimenez (MEX)

As Bowstring the Carp pointed out in his own excellent research, there are a number of players who do not represent red-listed countries but who will be facing one of those affected nations in away games in September.

Whether alternative venues can/will be found for those fixtures is another question but as it stands, the affected players may include:

  • ARSENAL: Partey (GHA), Pepe (CIV)
  • ASTON VILLA: Bailey (JAM)
  • BRENTFORD: Pinnock (JAM)
  • BRIGHTON: Bissouma (MAL)
  • CRYSTAL PALACE: Schlupp (GHA), Ayew (GHA), Zaha (CIV)
  • EVERTON: Gbamin (CIV), Iwobi (NIG)
  • LEICESTER: Amartey (GHA), Ndidi (NIG), Iheanacho (NIG)
  • MAN UTD: Bailly (CIV), Amad (CIV)
  • NORWICH: Rashica (NOR)
  • SOUTHAMPTON: Salisu (GHA), Djenepo (MAL)
  • SPURS: Aurier (CIV)
  • WATFORD: Dennis (NIG), Etebo (NIG)
  • WEST HAM: Antonio (JAM)
  • WOLVES: Boly (CIV)

I had a lucky punt on Alonso in GW1 but always had the intention to move him out this week. However, Seeing how abysmal Arsenal were - maybe its worth considering keeping him for GW2...?

Other thoughts were Cancelo (TSB: 7.3%) or Shaw (TSB 54.5%) or Digne (TSB: 18.4%) for this week.

MANC v NOR (h) for a bounceback fixture looks pretty tasty... and Cancelo is still a similar differential pick.

(Nailed-ness is a factor as I suspect Alonso will lose out to Chilwell pretty soon.)

Thanks dudes, I thought Cancelo did alright - not entirely his fault the front line couldn't stick it away

Do we know when Chilwell is due back, don't to follow up Marcos's 15pts with a big fat 0...

(Bench options are Coufal (LEI) and White (CHE)

Chilwell should be in contention this weekend I just think Alonso will keep his place after that performance. He might not though.

Coufal is a viable first bench. I think Alonso is worth the wait and having two FTs next week will be super useful.

With Benrahma looking like a price rise overnight and Gundogan possible to drop by next GW - should I make the transfer today or absorb the 0.1m or 0.2m price difference and wait for more info?

Could also opt for Greenwood but woud like extra funds to get Son in at some point.

Veltman my only solid bench option for next week whose fitness is also doddgy - so a move might have to be made

Depends on your strategy and whether you were planning to roll the FT or not. If you were planning on bringing in Benrahma anyway then might as well do it now, as I don't think Gundo starts against Norwich

      Yeah I'd do that.

I feel like the only players who should be making a transfer this week are Gundo owners. The rest should roll (assuming they have Salah + Bruno and even if they don't, I'd likely roll and stick with a Son + Mahrez type combo)

“Player A has only scored 2 goals in his last 7 meetings against Team X over the last 5 seasons
Player B has scored 8 goals in his last 7 meetings against Team Y over the last 5 seasons.”

Therefore Player B is the better captaincy choice this week.

I would give credence to idea that the last one appearance, two appearances maximum, for player X against team Y is indicative of future performance.

If that player has moved teams since they last played a particular opposition I would pretty much completely discount their past performances against that opposition.

0.5 still left in the bank. I want to save but the Benrahma looming price rise is scaring me because Barnes-->Benrahma would help for a future Greenwood-->Son move. Thoughts?

    1. Tinfoil Deathstar
      • 5 Years

All depends on future moves and how quickly you want Son in really. Barnes is unlikely to play 90 mins and is much more of a rotation risk atm if Rogers switches systems. I know the Norwich fixtures looks good for Barnes but the next three look good for Benrahma.

I'm very tempted by Barnes to Benrahma this week. I've got Mahrez who I'd like to move to Son next week (as think Mahrez is going to be a pain to hold much longer). I don't have any £ ITB so any price rise will scupper the plan.

Could potentially wait this GW and transfer Barnes to the likes of Sarr instead (plus Mahrez to Son) but Benrahma is the one I really want.

Is the pool of mids looking more promising or the pool of forwards looking more promising?

Trying to workout what should be my team structure going forward, 343 or 352, leaning towards 352 with a few decent 6.0 mids in Benrahma, Sarr, Harrison, Soucek

It is if Ings hauls. Dennis may have been a one off so it's mainly Ings vs Greenwood (-4)

Really Ings or Greenwood- we don’t know if Dennis fit and Brownhill didn’t start. On that basis not worth-4 with Ings playing Newcastle. Not that Greenwood not good option but United points may be more spread out.

International breaks going to be even more of an annoying nuisance this season than they usually are, then.

On the other hand it might be a chance to steal a march on the more casual players with ML teams becoming increasingly templatey.

      This (to your second point).

Anything that is annoying or disruptive is actually an advantage to the more serious managers who plan ahead.

    Hey all,

Thanks to the 4,000+ people that have requested a transfer planner, and apologies if it took a while to get to you.

James and Rob who built the planner encountered numerous obstacles from Google due to the scale of the distribution, but as they are super smart guys this has now been overcome and everyone who applied for a planner should have one.

If you don't have yours yet:

    1) Please check that you entered your email address correctly on the form.
    2) Check that the planner hasn't been added to your "shared with me" on google drive.
    3) Check you haven't received a notification that gone into your "spam"
    4) If you've done all the above and still can't find it, please email ffs_planner@fantasysheets.co.uk with your FFS username

Thanks, and I really do appreciate your patience with this. Was a completely new feature and we've kind of been learning as we've gone, but hopefully smoother times are ahead 🙂

Brilliant. Sadly I'll need to use it this week with Gundogan.

And probably about four times in gw4 from the looks of the article above.

Yep. Excellent work on the tracker.

I imagine the tracker will become more and more useful as we progress through the season. With one game played and all 14 of my team not injured, I'm not planning any transfers in just yet! Want to wait one more gameweek for a tiny bit more data

Benrhama in for Raphinha now to avoid price change and the gw4/5 dilemma?

Seems sensible to me. Seen a lot of people saying to stick to original plan, but the internationals have thrown an unexpected cat amongst the pigeons as I missed the news before the deadline

I would wait a week- Raphinha home game in front of Leeds fans for first time in PL and presumably you didn’t bring him in with just United game away in mind. Leicester not an easy game for West Ham

Hi...with salah potentially missing gw4, does this make salah to son gw3 an option?

Would have son for watford and palace while salah has Chelsea and maybe a blank ( or leeds)

Can then buy salah back gw5

I guess we may not know if salah to miss gw4 ahead of the gw3 deadline!! Thanks

    Barnes> Greenwood?

No other pressing issues (which is rare for me after GW1), just looking at their fixtures and Greenwood could heavily outscore Barnes. or do I hold Barnes and keep the 1.5m ITB for later on?

Had a very good first GW so I'm pretty sure I'm saving this week.

    Bachmann
    TAA Tsimikas Shaw
    Salah Bruno Mahrez Buendia Benrahma
    Ings Antonio

    Foster Amartey Ayling Obafemi

Plan is to do Mahrez & Buendia > Son (c) & Mbeumo in GW3 with 2 FTs. Looks good?

No. Do you ask because Son might rise before Saturday? In that case I'm considering Ings > Toney instead of Buendia > Mbuemo.

Yeah, Saturday morning is a decent chance for Son. Double Brentford and Mahrez would be a bit different.
