Veteran Fantasy Premier League (FPL) manager Shivanand Atre (@ShivaFPL) has shown remarkable consistency across his 14-year career, with only two finishes outside of the top 100,000 over that time.

He has been particularly good in recent years, showing he has been able to adapt well to the proliferation of content and opinions on social media: he has achieved five top 25,000 finishes in as many years, including a top 3,000 overall rank and another in the top 10k.

He also has a previous top 2,000 season-ending rank under his belt.

In this latest Meet the Manager episode, Joe quizzes Shiva on how he has managed to filter out the growing FPL ‘noise’ to perform well in each campaign.

His focus on anchoring a view at the start of the week and ensuring he can be flexible enough to react to emerging trends and news before a deadline has been a key tactic for success. Joe also finds out why a pen and paper has been Shiva’s secret weapon over this time.

The eye test has helped, too, as he focuses on the importance of watching matches over reading statistics. The ability to make rare, but calculated risks is also key.

To give a snapshot of his thinking, Shiva reveals his Gameweek 2 team and how he is putting his strategies into action.

Joe also wanted to catch up with Shiva to discuss how the game has developed in popularity in India, where he first started playing more than a decade ago, as well as in the US, where he now lives.

He recounts the struggle to make family commitments on a Saturday in India, when so many of his friends and relations had no idea how important ‘wildcarding’ and ‘making a transfer’ was to him.

The Meet the Manager series is where Joe chats to FPL managers with a strong record of success, an interesting view of the game and/or who are offering the community a unique insight into Fantasy management.

Joe’s interview with Shiva can be viewed below.

Would you start Cash or Ayling ?
(Sorry that I don't comment on article but bit busy).

Only choice for me this week, feels like Villa more likely to keep CS but Ayling more exciting going forward.

Looks like a great signing, player of season for past two seasons at respective clubs. Big upgrade on Leno and will prove better than Emi who's overrated due to FPL like Lundstram was. Arsenal underrated def last year and they've improved it massively this summer, once tricky fixtures are out of the way you know where the smart money is!

I like your optimism, although I am not persuaded since you think Emi is underrated. He was very good in cup comps before he even became relevant to FPL and I assume you are assuming the overated-ness, because if you watch him, and see the influence he has on a team/game, I can't imagine you would come to that conclusion.

I'm optimistic about Arsenal's FPL player value again this year, but it didn't work out for me when I felt the same last year, so I'm going conservative with only 2 players at the moment haha. A little worried about Arteta's deflated persona as well... :/

No way! ESR is the better option for sure imo. I always planned to bench him for these two games and wouldn't use a FT on a bench option in GW2 anyway. Thanks for the thought, but would you seriously do that yourself after 1 gameweek?

I think so yes, harder to guess that one though but 5 at the back aiming to keep it tight and counter on Chelsea is usually the tactic arteta uses and it has worked well recently. Seems to have their number

I have vested interest in both - but I plan to bench both of them it was how I structured my team after a BB.
      I would go Tierney.
What annoys me is because their performance against Brentford both could likely suffer a drop in price or even two by gw4 when I planned to play them again v Norwich etc.

Tierney looked fantastic against Brentford, against Chelsea you would assume he would have more space to attack because of Chelsea's WB system. And you can only hope that a Tierney Cross hits off either a Chelsea player/Arsenal one and manages to go in.

Thanks for your sincere reply! 😀
I didn't BB but I have a strong bench with the same plan as you for these two in these two.
I can't imagine Arsenal having so much possession against Chelsea as they did against Brentford, with Xhaka pinging the ball to Tierney at every opportunity; whereas ESR is more likely to be up the pitch to get a lucky break or something. Also there's to possibility of a back 3 for Arsenal, which would make Tierney less appealing.
Still, it's not too difficult to imagine Arsenal frustrating the Chelsea attack for 90 mins (almost as easy as imagining them conceding in the first or last 3 mins of the game). That would give Tierney a 3-point advantage on ESR, which would be nice.

Anyone looking at the salah / son hokey cokey?

Salah to son (watford gw3 and Palace gw4)

Means no salah for Chelsea gw3 and Leeds gw4. Although he may need to isolate gw4 in any case

    Then reverse it gw5....

May be worth it if news inconclusive re salah isolation following internationals.....thanks

I am seriously considering it as I only have Salah and no Fernandes. So in my case my choice was Salah to Fernandes g3 and gw4. But now that I think of it Son could be a great choice.
If it works great I have more cash for the chelsea lads and upgrading defence and strikers.
If it does not a WC in gw7 anyway.

Fewest games to score their first 10 PL goals for Liverpool: @SkySportsStatto

    13 Daniel Sturridge, Mohamed Salah
    18 Robbie Fowler, Fernando Torres
    20 Diogo Jota

Given his great start and a good pre season under his belt Jota currently have the upper hand over Firmino right?

Jota being Younger means more energy and overall better goal threat. Firmino has been great servant for 6 seasons at liverpool but i feel like he has lost his legs in the pressing style that liverpool demands

Jota getting benched vs Burnley seems slightly exaggerated ? Thoughts?

    1. @persecuted_by_mods
      4 years, 12 months ago

I think Bobby is still the main man, he's not old either so even if he had a bad season or two I think he's still pivotal to the way Liverpool play if he can regain that form

That said Jota gets healthy minutes and he can easily play them both together, and if firminos form stays below his best then I can see Jota replacing him or klopp tweaking things like putting Mo up front

I love how Liverpool have identified the value of PL experience in many of their signings - Robertson, VVD, Henderson, Milner, Mane, Salah, Jota, Shaqiri, Ox, Lallana, Wijnaldum and Adrian all proof of that. I even like how they loaned out Minimino to help him get PL experience too.

People talk about moneyball, but that is moneyball right there. PL experience was underrated by other PL clubs and Liverpool picked up on it to their advantage.

I understand that you will have a great green arrow if he hauls, but clearly he is the sub-optimal captain vs Salah. It's just feels like gambling to me. You can justify in GW37/38 if you're chasing, but l don't see it in GW2 personally.

He actually won me my mini league in GW38 last year, maybe it’s sentiment

I just think with the captaincy being 50/50 and owning both of those guys, the risk can be somewhat mitigated

Fpl is like the stock market, rogue investors will always think short term, make quick bucks seek the excitement and think they can beat the market. Most will end up being burnt, only a few manage to beat the market.

Whereas the sensible investors will tend to go long, see long term, ride the fluctuations and accumulate wealth along the way albeit nearer to market rates.

lol you will hate the answer, im not sure if its only firefox related or for other browsers, but its the zoom percentage you have to set in order to see your entire team on the screen in one go without having to scroll. If you are a firefox user, you most likely change to this zoom whenever the new season starts

possibly, but I think its normally 67%, the team just fits with it. There probably isnt many firefox users around lol, but some people do know this answer. Something I have to change every season when FPL starts back up, when you do it 7 years in a row ect you kinda remember it

Yeah fair enough. With Chrome on my 15 inch screen I can see my whole team and bench. I'd be pretty irritated if I couldn't see the whole team.

Yeah, I would have to do 50% for the whole team. I actually set to 80% and do some scrolling. I actually would need to go to 80% on FFS to have a nice experience, if only the text scaling didn't look like crap.

yes on other sites its annoying, but when you check your team alot, you eventually get annoyed and just zoom it out in the end. To clarify I cant see my sub names, im mainly talking points page checking

Yeah, I'm talking about the points page. My screen resolution is 3200 x 1800, but I only really have an issue on FPL website, and now on FFS because of the navigation bars at the top (2x green; 1x grey = not much space left for the actual website). Just a coincidence that they are both fantasy football sites.

Reasons why I am captaining Bruno again this gameweek:

    1. United scored 9 goals last time they played Southampton.
    2. Bruno has never blanked against them. He got a goal and two assists last time out.
    3. He just scored a hattrick in GW1 and is fresh and ready to go, unlike the end of last season when he was overplayed and tired.
    4. Southampton are in an absolute mess right now. They have lost their best player and best defender. Also, their second best defender isn't match-fit.
    5. Solskjaer may have found out how to finally get Pogba and Bruno to work together.
    6. Greenwood isn't an out-an-out CF which allows Bruno to get in the box more and score goals
    7. Salah has a poor record against Burnley. Only one goal.
    8. Burnley have a better defence than Southampton.

Bruno cap is a good choice. Sadly I dont have him, but I dont think Salah has a great record vs Burnely. That said, I am still capping Salah as im probably over-thinking it, dont have a better option, and first home game for Pool.

If I had Bruno, I would cap him over Salah tho

doest Salah have 2 goals and 2 assists vs Burnley? They might not all be PL games, but I think he has that

I enjoyed mark reeling off all the stats on BB but totally ignoring the important ones, big chances conceded and goals conceded, which were near identical for the two teams

The arguments for both just seem so equally weighted to me. One's gonna haul with 40 points if you captain him and the other blank, making or breaking your season 2 games in. Daamnn.

Just comes down to how high you value the opportunity to steal maybe ten points on the hive mind. I'm on Bruno because what better chance will you get to beat EO

If Bruno Fernandes keeps this level of form up for a few more seasons, then he will have to be considered one of the PL's greatest attacking midfielders alongside players like Gerrard, Lampard, David Silva, KDB, Scholes, Pires, Fabregas etc.

Happy with my squad, but do I have the lineup & captains right?
Might be needing my bench, ya know....

    Bachmann
    Trent Tsimikas Shaw
    Mahrez Grealish Torres(c) Jota
    Kane Ings(v) Watkins

    Foster | Ayling, Tierney, ESR

whos the cap on? Jota or Torres? Altho I dont think either is a great choice lol, if its on Torres, why not Grealish, he could be false 9?
I dont think Jota starts, but 30mins is enuf for a goal and baps

Torres. He is basically the (false) 9. He seemed a bit more likely to score in the first game. Grealish is more of a facilitator. He's involved in everything, but will still float around on the overlaps. Torres more likely to be in and around the 6 yard box more often I think.
