Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) is now the most-bought Fantasy Premier League forward of Gameweek 2, having outstripped Richarlison (£7.6m) in the ‘transfers in’ column.

The Belgian hasn’t even kicked a ball for Chelsea since his £97.5m move from Inter Milan last Thursday but a further 300,000+ Fantasy managers have wasted no time in snapping him up this week, added to the circa half a million who had him in their squads for his no-show in Gameweek 1.

Unless Harry Kane (£12.4m) or perhaps Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) are in situ as a premium forward placeholder, accommodating Lukaku into our FPL teams will probably require a spot of reconstructive surgery and a reallocation of funds.

How to incorporate the Blues’ new number nine is a question we’ll be pondering in our Scout Report below, which first delves a bit deeper into the transfer and his history.

KEY PLAYER/MANAGER QUOTES

“We were looking for a certain profile and Romelu gives us that. He feels confident to play physical, he feels confident to play with his back towards the goal, but also he is very strong in using his speed and pace. So this will always be a key figure in our game.

“To be strong in ball wins and offensive transition, this is what the league demands and this is what we demand from ourselves, but we don’t want to be only a ball possession team, only a defensive team, a team that only plays long balls.

“We feel that Romelu’s strength is having a variety of strengths. He is strong in the air, he will give us a new power when we cross from the side. I don’t think we need to change our style of play to make him shine. He has charisma, he is a good age now where he is a leader and hopefully he will be one of the leaders in our group.” – Thomas Tuchel

“I’ve been training throughout pre-season and I feel good. It’s been good to join in with the guys and get to work. Now it’s just about getting to know all my teammates better and at the end of the day, I’m ready for Sunday if the manager needs me.” – Romelu Lukaku

“He is a true number nine. Since I worked here, I understand why there are so many physical strikers that are so needed and so successful because the league demands it. He’s a perfect fit for Chelsea and he will take the weight off the shoulders of our younger strikers.

“This is a huge part of the story, that he does not step away and he’s happy to make life easier for players around him. I think players like Christian [Pulisic], Kai [Havertz] and Timo [Werner] will benefit from him.” – Thomas Tuchel

“My role will depend on what the game plan is and what the boss wants me to do. If he wants me to be a focal point or if he wants me to attack the spaces in behind, I can do it. The two years in Italy helped me master all the facets of the game for a striker and now I’m ready.

“I like the system that we play and I’m very flexible. I can play as a two or by myself and I’m used to the system because it’s what we play with the Belgian national team so I don’t need much time to adapt. It’s just knowing the strengths of my teammates in important positions and knowing what we do off the ball, then I can do the rest.” – Romelu Lukaku

THE HISTORY

Source: Wikipedia

Lukaku had spent eight years as a Premier League player before moving to Inter in 2019.

The Belgian had already plundered 33 goals and 13 assists in 73 league appearances for Anderlecht by the time he had reached 19 years of age, departing for Chelsea in August 2011 – almost exactly ten years before he would rejoin the Blues.

Sticky spells under Jose Mourinho bookended the striker’s time in England, with the serial blame-dodger citing youthfulness and ongoing development for his failure to bring the best out of Lukaku in west London and in Manchester.

In between, though, the Belgium international was a force to be reckoned with, never failing to hit double figures for goals in a single campaign from 2012/13 onwards.

A 25-goal season for Everton in 2016/17 and two successful years in Italy highlighted what Lukaku was capable of when managed effectively, as does 64 international goals in 98 caps for his motherland.

PREVIOUSLY IN FPL

Lukaku’s 221-point season in 2016/17 was his zenith in FPL and a particularly memorable one for us Fantasy managers, as the Belgian started out at a bargain £9.0m.

Thanks to some phenomenal work from the ridiculously talented TopMarx, we can break down the above numbers from 2013/14 onwards (records aren’t currently available before then) even further to give a clearer picture of his on-field achievements.

As with most players, there was a bit of a disparity between his historical record against the ‘big six’ and the rest: Lukaku averaged 5.39 points per match against the also-rans and 3.19 in encounters with the elite half-dozen sides from 2013-2019.

The Belgian’s home/away record was less contrasting: he averaged 5.13 points per match on his own turf and 4.29 on the road.

A record of 26 double-digit hauls in 209 appearances was so-so but it should be remembered (especially when looking at the below tables) that four of his seasons involved playing for an Everton side that didn’t finish higher than fifth and that indeed twice ended up in 11th.

Just to clarify Peps mumblings. When first asked, he said

‘Gundo trained today - a little disturbing and we’ll see tomorrow if he’s able or not. The rest of the team everybody is fit, except for Foden, and Kevin he still has some problems with his ankle, tomorrow we’ll see’.

Then when another journo asked him to clarify, he said

'Gundo is fit. KdB to be assessed tomm. KdB couldn't train today.'

The Scout tweets suggest this refers to KdB rather than Gundogan. Is there a mix up here?

He was talking about KDB but made it sound like he was talking about Gundo, hence the second Journo seeking clarification. Matters not, the last bit is the important bit.

Finally worked it out. Just watched it.

He didn't say "Gundo trained today", he said "Could not train today" when asked about KDB. His "Could not" sounds like "Gundo". Confused the reporter 😆

But at least Gundogan is confirmed fit 🙂

Keeping Torres for ARS & LEI after NOR, too?

      Your decisions are:
      A) Keep Barnes (maybe sell in GW4, when he has City) - 1FT used
      B) Sell Barnes, buy Torres (still sell in GW4/GW5) - 2 FTs used
      C) Sell Barnes, keep Torres through GW3-5 (onwards) - 1 FT used

How does potentially having to use 2 transfers on this move affect other plans you may want to make? (Lukaku? Son? DCL? etc.)

Are you likely to get rid of Torres soon after? Maybe. You'll never know when he'll start.

      Things to think about.

good points - I agree its probably too risky and certainly not a long-term move - its just an easy way to improve City coverage in a game where I think they'll score a shedload - I probably won't do it for the reasons you (& Wild Rover) outline!

Hmmmm... Big signing... but for FPL purposes, really need to see how Chelsea do up to GW6 first

The already fabled GW7-11 5-game fixture run begins at a time when the Champions League plus League Cup & International Breaks are all in full flight:

    28/29 Sept - CL MD2
    2 Oct - GW7 (SOU)
    *International Break 2*
    16 Oct - GW8 (bre)
    19/20 Oct - CL MD3
    23 Oct - GW9 (NOR)
26/27 - EFL Cup Fourth Round
    30 Oct - GW10 (new)
    2/3 Nov - CL MD4
    6 Nov - GW11 (BUR)
    *International Break 3*
    20 Nov - GW12 (lei)

Plus the scoring system doesn't exactly reward elite strikers these days - even if Kaku manages to do a Kane with 37 returns (which presumably he'll have to do without penalties?) he's still only looking at just about keeping up with Bruno - and 37 returns would be fairly phenomenal performance tbf, he may be closer to the 30-returns mark

International Breaks aside, our squad is good enough not to have to need Lukaku to play the cup matches. UCL matches will depend on the opponent as to whether he plays, but obviously we are Pot 1 due to winning it last year.

To be honest, he'll want to play UCL and I doubt he'd not be able to play most games. He's always been pretty ever-present when fit.

Can’t really get him without selling one of Bruno/Salah = no go for me unless I end up with insane TV second half of the season. Would probably be the case even if he was nailed for 90 every game.

Plan is to ditch Bruno for him on WC. May even go without Salah as well and have Lukaku and KDB as my premiums.

Will you be getting Bruno back for GW14?

That Man Utd fixture run from 14 to 27 is just bonkers

8 to 13 obviously isn’t brilliant, but he’s still well capable of returns and baps all the way through it as well

This is an excellent point. With the theory that premiums will return every other week or so and moving them around is a waste of transfers, it seems clear that if it was a premium mid vs a premium forward you should stick with the mid.

Can Son playing as a striker on pens, corners and free kicks outscore Lukaku? And even a City version of Kane? It's a valid question.

As things stand I’d definitely have Lukaku behind Bruno & Salah to be honest

I know he’s new & a fresh face etc, but at only 4 points per goal, no cleansheet points, and (presumably?) no penalties, I just don’t think he can compete with those guys without doing something absolutely extraordinary

And if Bruno & Salah happen to hit extraordinary form, you can forget about Lukaku altogether as they’ll be up on 300 points

If Kane goes to City I’d have Lukaku behind both Kane & Son too - Son on all set pieces & pens with 5 points per goal and clean sheet points should match Kaku point for point, and way exceed him on value

People will be able to own 3 premiums pretty soon with little difficulty, once team values get up to 102-103m. It could be that we just have 2 premium mids and 1 premium forward for most of the season. If Kane stays at Spurs, then Lukaku might be the premium forward for most of the time.

If Kane moves, then it becomes more interesting as people might potentially want 2 premium forwards at times, and it takes quite a few transfers to switch back and forth between this and 2 premium mids/1 premium forward.

All up in the air innit

Probably need a Leeds backlash vs Everton to open things up & put the cat amongst the FPL pigeons - And if Bailey & Buendia click behind Ings with Villa scoring 3 or 4 that'll generate similar waves

Have a sneaking suspicion Toney has the ability to cause a bit of panic if he gets a few chances vs Palace too

But the big talking point is definitely how the defences of Southampton & Burnley get on

If they both capitulate there'll be monster scores all over the place again & vice-versa

It’s a conundrum really. They are certainly plating weaker opposition so he could justifiably keep playing there. Shaw shouldn’t really need the help. Thing is, although Sancho and Cavani don’t play the same position, when they’re added in to the first 11 that’ll affect the whole team sheet and shape so the most like to have to adjust is Pogba.
I’d say the fans will absolutely demand Pogba plays there on the weekend, but I’m not sure how long that’ll last.
If I knew, I’d have snapped him up straight away.

I got him. He is generally inconsistent but I feel Solskjaer will start him again at LW and it is his position to lose with Rashford out. He may very well haul against Southampton and then everyone will be transferring him so I got in early before his price rise. If he doesn’t work out though I will just sell and bring in Son. Easy really.

A lot of folk once-bitten twice shy with him

You know what's interesting, I've always felt that managers in England don't seem to know what to do with Lukaku. He's not a target man. He's built like one but he's not.

He's not Drogba. He makes intelligent runs into the center from wide. He pulls defenders away and likes to get physical but always with an eye to turn and get through on goal where he's a pretty good finisher.

I see him more like Aubameyang than a Cavani type of 9. And he has felt misused a lot especially at United. Let's hope Tuchel knows his strengths and how to play to them.
