Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Wednesday’s Gameweek 17 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes throughout December.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

FPL Gameweek 17 round-up:

INJURIES AND BANS

FPL Gameweek 17 review: Martinelli update, bargain Broja and Antonio's blank 1

Already without the suspended Raul Jimenez, who returns in Gameweek 18, Wolves lost Rayan Ait-Nouri to an injury in the warm-up on Wednesday and then saw Hwang Hee-chan limp from the field of play shortly after kick-off.

There has yet to be an update on either player.

All eyes were on the Brighton starting XI after “three or four” players tested positive for Covid-19 in the run-up to tonight’s fixture, so the absences of Neal Maupay, Pascal Gross, Jurgen Locadia and Jason Steele were more noteworthy than usual. Gross and Maupay will definitely miss Gameweek 18, according to their manager.

Yves Bissouma picked up his fifth booking of the season to compound Albion’s misery, while Joel Veltman appeared to pull up holding his hamstring on the stroke of full-time and is a “major doubt” for the weekend.

Tino Livramento and Armando Broja recovered from their respective issues to feature for Southampton against Palace but Adam Armstrong missed out on the 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park.

Aaron Cresswell was also absent from West Ham’s clash with Arsenal and, already with the injured Ben Johnson, the Hammers lost another full-back in the shape of Vladimir Coufal, who was sent off for two bookable offences at the Emirates.

Gabriel Martinelli limped out of that win for the Gunners, although cramp was to blame according to his manager.

“Certainly, it was one of the best [performances from Martinelli] in every aspect of the game. Physically he’s growing, today he was cramping again, and he needs to mature on that side of the game. But his overall understanding of the game is much better.” – Mikel Arteta

GAMEWEEK 17 TAKEAWAYS

ANTONIO… AT RIGHT-BACK?

The dismissal of Coufal and the unavailability of Johnson saw Michail Antonio move to right-back for a spell in the second half of Wednesday’s match in north London, reprising a role he briefly played earlier in his West Ham career.

Antonio featuring in that position against Norwich in Gameweek 18 still seems a long shot, and indeed David Moyes turned to youngster Harrison Ashby at full-back in the closing stages of the loss to the Gunners, with Antonio moving back up top.

And aside from that stint in the back four, it was another underwhelming night for owners of the forward, who is now eight games without a goal.

Antonio didn’t register a single penalty box touch or shot at the Emirates, drifting right and deep as he helped with the collective effort out of possession.

At least the upcoming fixture run should give Antonio less off-the-ball work to do but he goes into that ticker-topping stretch of games looking low on confidence.

CONCERN FOR SMITH ROWE DESPITE GOAL

Emile Smith Rowe scored his sixth goal of the season in Arsenal’s win over West Ham but it was a second successive benching for the widely owned FPL midfielder, and the prospects of him regaining his place for Gameweek 18 were dented by excellent displays from Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.

Martinelli had more shots in the box than any Arsenal player at the Emirates and he really ought to have opened the scoring before he did, missing a sitter from close range – a good sign, at least, that he is capable of getting into threatening positions. His finish for the hosts’ opener was also, dare we say it, Henry-esque.

Above: Martinelli is top for expected goal involvement (xGI) in Gameweek 17 so far

Perhaps Smith Rowe’s best chance of regaining a start for the clash with Leeds is if Mikel Arteta deems alterations are necessary for a match taking place in less than 72 hours time, particularly as he has now named an unchanged side for the last three fixtures.

Martinelli’s suspected cramp was a reflection of how long he has been out of the side but it was Martin Odegaard who Smith Rowe replaced this time, so there are at least multiple routes back into the side for the benched midfielder.

SPIRITO DI SANTO

We were hailing Wolves’ backline after Gameweek 17 and Bruno Lage’s troops were at it again on Wednesday, registering their fourth clean sheet in six games. The only two goals they’ve conceded in that time were against Manchester City and Liverpool.

Yes they were indebted to a horror Enock Mwepu miss to preserve their shut-out but that was the only ‘big chance’ that Brighton carved out, with Bruno Sa not even needing to register a save point to move to the top of the FPL goalkeepers’ points table.

Romain Saiss, always good for a set-piece goal, entered the corresponding top ten list of defenders with his 15-point haul, grabbing the match-winner with a well-taken volley.

Some iffy upcoming fixtures may deter investment in Wolves defenders but their form at the back is worth bearing in mind for anyone thinking about Chelsea attackers in Gameweek 18.

Above: Only the top three clubs have conceded fewer goals than Wolves (14) in 2021/22

BUDGET BROJA SHINES AGAIN

Armando Broja made a swift return from injury to register a 12-point haul in Southampton’s entertaining 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, notching his fourth and fifth attacking returns in as many league starts.

“I was happy that Broja could make it just in time. You could see how important he was for our team. We need every player at the moment. It can be that you’re out of the squad at one moment and then you have to play.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

It’s not just a kneejerk reaction to his points that sees him firmly re-enter the FPL radar but the Saints’ injury situation up front; where he was initially an off-putting purchase due to his rotation risk status, he was down two positional rivals in the form of Adams and Armstrong at Selhurst Park.

Adams’s injury was described as “complicated” by Hasenhuttl earlier this week, while Armstrong still felt pain in his leg and was unable to participate in Gameweek 17.

Any length of absence for at least one of those strikers certainly increases Broja’s appeal, as of course does his bargain-bin price tag and the dearth of in-form forwards elsewhere in the division.

The less said about the two defences in south London the better: they are two of just four Premier League sides without a clean sheet in the last six Gameweeks, with Southampton’s total of 14 goals conceded the joint-worst.

Tino Livramento picked up a booking to earn a ‘zero’ score, while Vicente Guaita didn’t even make it onto the pitch as he was benched for Jack Butland.

The return to fitness of Joachim Andersen, absent from the starting XI in the last five Gameweeks, could be significant for Palace, at least, who seem to be this season’s “Brighton” in terms of not translating good defensive numbers into clean sheets.

10 cases in hospital and 1 death in the UK. South African scientists say Omicron is weaker. I’m far from anti lockdown and anti vax but people need to stop watching the news and getting caught up in all the hysteria.

I have a few friends with covid right now and they’re absolutely fine. Everyone is vaccinated. BBC and Sky have a lot to answer for with their fearmongering.

Football will be going ahead. Talk of shut down is absolute nonsense.

That really has nothing to do with the crux of the issue which is it is more transmissible, and football doesn't get played when they have enough cases

If football fans don’t want to catch covid don’t go to the games. Why more restrictions for a weaker disease??

Arsenal played 1st game without any strikers who both had covid and didn’t cancel. Some teams have a few cases and trying to cancel

                4 years, 3 months ago

Again that's a totally separate issue to your initial point which seemed to be it's milder = no chance football stops, which patently makes no sense as matches have been cancelled all week

            2. @persecuted_by_mods
                4 years, 3 months ago

I fear you read what you want to and then respond to that, where have I mentioned anything to do with fans?

My point was simple, you saying there won't be a shut down because it's milder is plain stupid, not because it isn't milder (by all accounts it does seem to be) but because mildness doesn't come into what PL clubs do when there's an outbreak, if you have 13 infected they don't go ah it's mild lads play on, the match gets cancelled. I'm not arguing whether that's right or wrong, simply saying you are wrong for suggesting there's no chance football gets cancelled

It's weaker in terms of deadlineness but its light years more transmissable which means that without boosters (Zeneca is next to useless against omicron) the overwhelmingly greater cases generated leads to many more hospitalizations and deaths. Especially since the NHS is already on its knees and leading to huge knock-on effects for getting other treatments

Sorry mate but I have to disagree. I work in a hospital and our red wards are increasing at a worrying rate. Not everyone is vaccinated which is why our respirators are getting a lot of use. Most people end up with a sniffle and temperature, but it’s the numbers of those who don’t who end up in hospital. They cause beds to taken up and it’s the fast rate which is causing concern, especially when it’s stopping other potentially life-saving hospital business.

I wasn't going to mention what you posted, as I' n a country that doesn't get hysterical about covid, whereas the English government seems to be compensating for its complacency at the start of the crisis by over-reacting now, along with its poodle media. People say they dont trust the government but still get caught up in it all.

I would respect christina's point - he lives in SA where it began. He says what experts I've been following in SA say - omicron is more infectious but milder than previous strains. If you're vaccinated you're very unlikely to feel worse than if you had a cold or mild flu. Too many people (including the English PM and Health Sec) are conflating infection rates (high) with hospitalisation and death rates (very low).

i bought mine in Tescos, you get them in any pharmacy too, they are just called high strength vitamin c, they come in an orange tube and you dissolve the tablets in water so you drink it, get them and vitamin D tablets also bought in Tescos, and take 1 Aspirin with some paracetemol and hopefully you'll be brand new in a few days

Thomas Frank saying they want to cancel games so they can 'give everything a good clean' shows how little football still understands this thing.

I think games should go ahead and teams should play on if they have enough players.

              1. The problem is all teams have their own agendas - we saw similar during the first lockdown with the "null and void" lot. PL are in a pretty impossible position.

a little bit of a crazy idea, i'm looking for a second keeper to pair with Sanchez as i've been burned already not having a backup during covid, i can currently afford any keeper but i don't particularly want to spend a fortune on 2 keepers, so i'm thinking the answer to my problems could be Dubravka 4.4,

yes Newcastle are rubbish and their next couple of fixtures are pretty tough, but after that their fixtures improve considerably, and with the January transfer window just a couple of weeks away, money bags Newcastle will probably go out and buy a whole new defense, or probably replacements for everybody except their keepers, who are quite good, Wilson, ASM and maybe Shelvey

so is Dubravka the cure for covid ?

Count 1 person's goalkeeper points and he will realize the value in a keeper.
Have Guaita? Have Ramsdale? A big difference I am sure.
The bottom line, more than ever, spend the few bob an another keeper. People move from a 6 mil to a 7.5mil in an instant. a keeper from 4.5 to 5 seems a much easier proposition IMO

i know you're right, Martinez is currently top of my list but that means i'm spending 10m on 2 keepers, which is just too much imo, so that's why i'm trying to talk myself into getting Dubravka, with the hope that Newcastle in a few weeks will be a much better team than they are now 🙂

We can assume Watford is off - If they were willing to call the Burnley game off at such short notice then numbers of infected must be high in the camp.

                  This.

At this stage bringing in anybody on a transfer is fraught as any or all games could get called off even after the deadline has passed.

Unless the PL goes ahead with Thomas Frank's recommendation its all an unknown gamble as to which games will end up going ahead this weekend.

The problem with Frank's recommendation is that stopping games for a week won't resolve the issue. We're looking at least at another 4-6 weeks of issues with high Covid cases - and that's being optimistic.

the sensible thing to do at this point is make a reassessment of how much value you place in rank and in this game generally. It's now so far out of managers hands that it is an increasingly poor measure of ability. Time to start playing guitar or summat

People panicking that football might be cancelled and they'll have no FPL is very sad really.

Every game week that continues increases the likelihood (and length) of a postponement. May as well get it done and try and get things back on track.

Yes, football can be a lifeline for some. I live alone, I’m currently in isolation, and having live sport is something to build my day around and look forward to.

It would indeed be sad if I lost that structure and excitement too, on top of everything else.

Agreed. Obviously its not as important as protecting people's health, but I can understand the frustration as sport/FPL can really help to get through the shapeless & lonely days

If it carries on at this rate everyone in the country will have had it by the end of January. On the plus side that means the league can restart on 10th February

Am I the only one who thinks that Antonio won't start against Norwich?

He really looks tired, beside being bad, and Moyes said that nobody could play 3 matches in a week.

it's him needing a rest versus needing to find some form.

I'd have thought that it makes sense to give him 60mins.

                  Game won't happen anyway.

Dont worry, he may start in defense due to injuries/suspension 😉

Are we all expecting no-shows from Son and Reguilon tonight? Seen a couple of predicted line-ups, none featuring Son and only one featuring Reguilon.

don't care either way on Reguilon, eagerly awaiting Livramento's bench points.

My main hope for the line ups tonight is that Reguilon starts! Even if he blanks, the 1-2pts would still be of use.

Why wouldn’t he be? I don’t think he was one of the Covid guys, and his minor injury was ages ago.

Thats exactly what I was hoping. As you say when he was subbed off in the Norwich game it seemed only precautionary and as it was a while ago now I would not expect him to be unavailable because of injury. So his availability may just depend on wether or not he was one of the players with covid which to be honest I have no idea.

Right so is the general consensus that Son either has or had Covid and either way won't feature?

                  Reguilon starts.
