Covid watch: The club-by-club latest and how it affects FPL

The increase in Coronavirus cases has already seen 18 Premier League fixtures postponed, with the latest two of those arriving in Double Gameweek 21.

With so much uncertainty, here’s a club-by-club round-up of what we know so far.

ARSENAL

Mikel Arteta was not on the touchline in Double Gameweek 21 after testing positive for Covid-19 for a second time.

The playing staff have also been hit by coronavirus cases themselves, however.

Two players – Albert Sambi Lokonga and Pablo Mari – missed the Gameweek 18 win over Leeds United, while Calum Chambers did likewise ahead of the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

Takehiro Tomiyasu, Cedric Soares and Ainsley Maitland-Niles were then ruled ruled out of Gameweek 19 after returning positive tests, followed by Eddie Nketiah, who missed Saturday’s loss against Manchester City, with the 22-year-old forward also set to be absent for the midweek EFL Cup semi-final.

ASTON VILLA

Aston Villa have struggled with coronavirus problems recently, forcing the postponement of last month’s clash with Burnley.

Their Gameweek 19 tie at Elland Road was also called off, though that was due to Covid-19 cases in the Leeds United squad.

For Villa, Steven Gerrard confirmed that two players had tested positive ahead of Gameweek 17. Respecting medical confidentiality, he didn’t identify the squad members affected, but Jed Steer, Morgan Sanson, Anwar El Ghazi and Keinan Davis were all missing – and the last three of those players were ruled out of Gameweek 18.

John McGinn was missing in Gameweek 19, along with Gerrard after testing positive for Covid, but has since returned against Brentford on Sunday.

Ollie Watkins was absent, however, which Gerrard touched on after the game:

“I’m not sure I’m in the position to give you the details on it but we have got a mixture of Covid and injury problems at the moment. Ollie (Watkins) should be back for the next game.”

BRENTFORD

Brentford’s Gameweek 17 and 18 ties were called off, with the Bees’ Covid outbreak rising to 13 cases across players and staff.

However, they have since returned to action, with one of their previously postponed clashes against Southampton rescheduled for Double Gameweek 21.

Vitaly Janelt became the latest Bees player to be affected, missing out in Gameweeks 19 and 20, but has since returned as a substitute against Aston Villa.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

Brighton have had two matches postponed due to Covid so far this season, after outbreaks in Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United’s squads.

As for Albion themselves, Neal Maupay and Pascal Gross were absent against Wolves in Gameweek 17, with Covid thought to be the reason for their absences. That pair were declared available for selection ahead of Gameweek 19.

Shane Duffy missed out on Boxing Day against Brentford, with Graham Potter saying:

“[We have] a few COVID-related issues, and one or two injuries. Shane’s in that bracket.”

BURNLEY

Burnley have had three matches postponed because of Covid but in every case, the issue was with the opposition.

However, they were missing four players in Gameweek 20 after positive tests: Nick Pope, Josh Brownhill, Kevin Long and Jay Rodriguez, with the latter two returning as substitutes against Leeds United on Sunday.

Dale Stephens and Maxwel Cornet have previously contracted the virus, too, but are now out of their isolation periods.

CHELSEA

Thomas Tuchel revealed ahead of Gameweek 18 that Romelu LukakuTimo WernerCallum Hudson-Odoi and Ben Chilwell have all tested positive for Covid-19.

That group of players missed out in Gameweeks 18 and 19, and there were further cases reported, too, with Kai Havertz among the players missing out – although Jorginho was a “false positive”.

Mateo Kovacic had previously tested positive for coronavirus but has since returned.

CRYSTAL PALACE

Patrick Vieira’s squad and the manager himself were hit by a coronavirus outbreak ahead of Gameweek 19 but their match went ahead.

No players have been officially named as being affected but the Eagles were without Christian Benteke, Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze, Vicente Guaita, Nathaniel Clyne and Luka Milivojevic for the trip to north London.

Benteke, Guaita and Milivojevic returned in Gameweek 20, plus Olise in Double Gameweek 21.

However, Conor Gallagher has been a fresh absentee and has missed the last two games, with reports suggesting he had also tested positive.

EVERTON

Everton had four unexpected absentees for the Gameweek 17 draw with Chelsea Demarai Gray, Salomon Rondon, Fabian Delph and Cenk Tosun – but the club have yet to confirm whether their unavailability was Covid-related.

The Toffees’ Gameweek 18 and 20 matches against Leicester City and Newcastle United were called off due to unavailability within their opponents’ squads but it was Rafael Benitez’s side who were the cause of their Gameweek 19 postponement.

However, they have since returned to action against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday, and are also one of three teams to play twice in Double Gameweek 21, having seen their previously postponed clash against Leicester City rearranged for Tuesday 11th January.

LEEDS UNITED

Diego Llorente missed the Gameweek 18 defeat to Arsenal after testing positive for Covid-19.

He was the first of numerous nameless Leeds players affected, with their Boxing Day match against Liverpool and Gameweek 20 clash with Aston Villa called off because of a shortage of players.

However, they have since returned to action against Burnley on Sunday.

LEICESTER CITY

Both of Leicester’s Gameweek 17 and 18 clashes were postponed due to a Covid outbreak in the Foxes camp. As a result, Brendan Rodgers’ side had an insufficient number of first-team players available to fulfil the matches.

The Foxes and all of the players originally affected by the virus have since returned to action.

Despite that, their Double Gameweek 21 tie against Norwich City was called off due to an outbreak in the Canaries’ squad, but they won’t blank, with their previously postponed clash against Everton slotting into the current round.

LIVERPOOL

Jurgen Klopp was not on the touchline in Double Gameweek 21 after a suspected positive test for Covid-19.

The playing staff have also been hit by coronavirus cases themselves, however.

Virgil van Dijk, Curtis Jones and Fabinho all missed out on Gameweek 17 and 18 after contracting the virus, while Thiago also missed the fixture at Tottenham Hotspur after a suspected positive Covid-19 test.

That quartet were passed fit for the Gameweek 20 meeting with Leicester.

Alisson, Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino were ruled out of Double Gameweek 21 after returning suspected positive tests for Covid-19, with the trio now isolating.

MANCHESTER CITY

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Manchester City suffered from Covid infections over the festive period – with Kyle Walker and Rodri amongst those affected.

Both were back in the squad for Saturday’s 2-1 win at Arsenal, though Phil Foden and Oleksandr Zinchenko missed out after apparently testing positive, while John Stones has also been absent for two weeks with an unspecified problem.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Manchester United’s Gameweek 17 and 18 ties against Brentford and Brighton and Hove Albion were postponed.

The Red Devils had previously shut the first-team section of their training ground after a rise in coronavirus cases that led to Gameweek 17’s trip to Brentford being called off.

A staggered return to training was rolled out ahead of Gameweek 19, with Ralf Rangnick revealing that all of his squad were now illness-free.

Victor Lindelof has since tested positive for Covid and has had to isolate, missing games against Newcastle United and Burnley, but is in contention to feature against Wolverhampton Wanderers in Double Gameweek 21.

NEWCASTLE UNITED

Karl Darlow, Matt Ritchie, Joe Willock and Ciaran Clark were absent against Manchester United in Gameweek 19 because of either Covid-19 or injury (their manager wouldn’t say which), and all-round unavailability resulted in the postponement of Newcastle’s Gameweek 20 match against Everton.

Saturday’s tie against Southampton was also called off, and as a result, they are the only team to blank in Double Gameweek 21

NORWICH CITY

Four Norwich City players – Lukas Rupp, Pierre Lees-Melou, Christos Tzolis and Josh Sargent – are reported to have missed the 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa due to Covid symptoms or returning a positive test, with the Gameweek 18 clash against West Ham United called off.

All bar Rupp have since returned.

Tim Krul then confirmed on social media ahead of Boxing Day that he too had tested positive, subsequently missing out in Gameweek 19, while Max AaronsTodd Cantwell and Teemu Pukki were missing for Norwich in Gameweek 20 through “injury and illness”.

The Canaries’ Double Gameweek 21 clash against Leicester City was then called off, due to a combination of positive Covid-19 tests and injuries, though they are scheduled to be back in action next week, when they take on West Ham United.

SOUTHAMPTON

Southampton have had two matches postponed because of Covid but in both cases, the issue was with the opposition.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were hit by the absence of positive Covid cases Nathan TellaJack Stephens and Lyanco in Gameweek 19, although Tella returned in Gameweek 20.

Che Adams became the latest player to test positive ahead of the Gameweek 20 draw with Spurs.

However, they have since seen their clash against Brentford rescheduled for Double Gameweek 21.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Tottenham Hotspur’s Gameweek 17 encounter against Leicester City was postponed due to a Covid outbreak in the Foxes squad, but the Lilywhites have had issues of their own, having seen their clash against Brighton called off the week before.

However, they were back in action in Gameweek 18, with no current known issues in the playing squad.

WATFORD

Watford’s Gameweek 17 tie against Burnley was postponed less than three hours before kick-off, with the club saying it had an “insufficient number of first-team players available to fulfil the match”.

The decision to call off the game was taken by the Premier League following guidance from medical advisors, while it was later revealed that their Gameweek 18 and 19 fixtures were also off.

Rob Elliot, Jeremy Ngakia and William Troost-Ekong were among the unexplained absentees, but the latter two have since returned in Double Gameweek 21.

WEST HAM UNITED

West Ham’s Gameweek 18 home tie against Norwich City – which is now taking place in Double Gameweek 21 – was called off due to Covid issues in the Canaries squad.

The Hammers have largely remained unaffected, but David Moyes did report a couple of cases in his EFL Cup press conference.

“We’re very good. The training ground has been very good and most are okay. We have got one or two with the virus, but most are very good and long may that continue.” – David Moyes

Michail Antonio was one of those affected but he made a swift return in Gameweek 19 as a substitute.

Media reports suggest that Pablo Fornals tested positive ahead of Gameweek 20.

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

Fabio Silva and Yerson Mosquera tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of the Chelsea match in Gameweek 18, although that match went ahead.

Wolves’ Gameweek 19 fixture against Watford was called off because of the Hornets’ shortage of numbers but Bruno Lage was hit by a similar shortfall ahead of Gameweek 20, resulting in a postponement of their clash with Arsenal.

However, they are due back in action against Manchester United in Double Gameweek 21.

The whole time I was wondering if I should do the Vardy -> Watkins transfer. But then the de Gea -> Ramsdale transfer was more important. The game has degenerated into a real game of luck.

Leicester training ground closed for 48 hours, which surely means no game sunday (if there was any doubt)

Chelsea - Everton set to go ahead apparently. Good for football maybe, but I won't get Broja from the bench probably after all. Bummer.

Ahh, so you are on 33 points and haven’t been affected by these BS postponements whatsoever, so you don’t want this week null and void.

Well yeah, they won’t remove the points this week. But don’t act like it’s unfair if that was a possibility. FPL is a completely uneven playing field at the moment.

To say the situation that's causing postponements is far from ideal is an understatement and I wish it wasn't the case.

But a bit of FPL chaos can be good. Mixes things up.

Adds some luck as well of course, but there will be opportunities too."

I like Andy and he seems like a nice fella but can't see anything good in this chaos. Opportunities? Sure, every lottery is an opportunity too.

What do you expect from someone that watches football only to play FPL.

Millions of people care about watching football matches, it can help get someone through the day. Whereas a small minority of FPL players would think that all this chaos is a good thing. Yeah, it’s not a good thing at all.

I might now even get to the next round in Cup, since my cup opponent has 20 and only Salah to play. I have Salah as well but as C and I have trent, Jota and Alonso. and on 10 points(-4) . So hopefully other games won't get postponed. At least Liverpool one should be ok., since so far there's no talks of them having Covid isseues or their opponent Newcastle.

Chelsea one might be another story. .....

The Cup is overrated tbh. And for you if the Liverpool game goes ahead, you're good to go through.

Yeah it probably is, but it's first time I have gotten so far and with this GW17 I try to take positive vibes from anywhere I can. 🙂

I read somewhere that United had sent a scout to watch Meslier during the City game.

Clubs need to stop their staff travelling now, they are the ones that are being infected first.
Only coaches need to be allowed on training grounds and perhaps some medical staff.
Groundskeepers need to work at different times from players.
Masks need to be made mandatory again.
Board members need to avoid meeting players and coaching staff in person, perhaps over Zoom.
And also games need to be played behind closed doors again.

Reform a strict bubble like last season and then maybe we can have regular football.

And get 100% of the players vaccinated now. Can’t believe there are still premierleague players not vaccinated.

Vaccination and booster not making much headway against Omnicron, which by the way sounds like a shopping centre.

Certain sacrifices need to be made.
Cancellation means no football and no fans.

      Klopp sensible as always:

"I won’t apologise for the view I hold on the vaccination, no matter how unpopular it might make me...

"It’s never a case of ‘listen to me’ – it’s always ‘listen to those who know’.

"Ignore those who pretend to know. Ignore lies and misinformation."

That's good stand to take. Only thing is rightnow everyone is in the dark actually, only some a little less. Noone hasn't got all the answers rightnow.

Well probably not the rest of my life, and I don't need all the answers just enough of them.

Rightnow it seems those who should know the answers seem to change their answers quite often.

I'm in a position where I can stand still for a bit, but not for long that's true.

But, but, but... They are brainwashed by the mainstream media or even paid off by The Big Pharma! It is The great reset! All the governments and mainstream media and health professionals are clearly in IT! Everyone should just do their own research like I did by watching a youtube video by someone who knows.

Only a sheep wouldn't question how quickly they rolled out vaccines and what they put in them before deciding. Not everyone who didn't vacc are conspiracy theorists. I got 2 jabs and booster, they have to offer some form of protection. But it's not a guarantee of no COVID, nothing is. Too many think it is though and laxed their preventative measures. Not having a go at anyone. Just try staying safe and healthy everyone.

Appreciate why some people are nervous about getting a jab, but the vaccines have all been through the same approval process as any other, just in a much shorter timescale. This is due to a number of reasons like global collaboration in research and development, existing studies on other coronaviruses, increased funding, high uptake in volunteers for testing and monitoring amongst other things. Totally natural to questions these things, but the information is all readily available. Hope you (and all) stay safe and well too!

#thfc Postponement request came from Leicester. Spurs travelled up yesterday and were preparing to play. Obvious frustration at timing as they had proposed playing Rennes yesterday.

Tottenham's Europa League game against Rennes was called off last week because of an outbreak of Covid in the Spurs camp.

Manager Antonio Conte had hoped that they could rearrarange it in place of the Leicester game with Uefa poised to rule that the London side forfeit the match.

Those teams with good vaccination policies should be allowed to play in GW18, if playing each other. Why should they be penalised?

I know wolves are ahead of the game, but we dont know the vax status of those who got infected.

Plenty of double vaxxed people will get omicron. It isnt that simplistic.

Of course someone will get it even if vaccinated. Its not 100% effective, pfeiffer 90-98%.

@FIRMINOOOO, 90% effective at preventing hospitalisation or death you mean? Not 90% effective in stopping transmission that's for sure. MASSIVE difference.
