We have chosen our best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players for Gameweek 28 ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 GMT deadline.

We line up in a 4-4-2 formation and are limited to £83.5m – the small, annual increase to the starting budget that you can read more about here – for our first XI.

Our four substitutes, meanwhile, are always picked from the budget/cheaper crop of players, not to serve as bench fodder but to give some alternative options who don’t cost as much as some of the names in our line-up.

GOALKEEPER AND DEFENDERS

Is Hwang Hee-chan

The game’s joint-highest scoring stopper, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Jose Sa (£5.3m), gets the nod between the posts. Wolves previously went through a binary period whereby every score between Gameweeks 12 and 21 was either 1-0 or 0-0 and their defence kept six clean sheets out of a possible eight. The shut-outs have dried up of late, with their expected goals conceded (xGC) tally catching up with them after a season of overachievement.

A huge reason for this overachievement has been the form of, and 56 save made by, Sa, which has brought in 14 save points and eight bonuses. A promising Double Gameweek at home to both Crystal Palace and goal-shy Watford should be a great way for Wolves’ backline to get back on track.

Romain Saiss (£5.0m) follows Sa into the Scout Picks, with the Moroccan one of Wolves’ main aerial threats. Crystal Palace have made a habit out of conceding from set plays this season.

Chelsea’s upcoming games against Burnley and Norwich City are close to perfection as a double-header, notwithstanding the Clarets’ recent upturn in form. From a defensive point of view, the two fixtures particularly appeal: these sides are the lowest scorers in the division and, even during their recent purple patch, Sean Dyche’s troops have still only found the net on six occasions in their last seven games.

Thomas Tuchel’s cautious words on the fit-again Reece James (£6.2m) call into question the wing-back’s game-time in the league over the coming weeks but an injury to Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.6m), a midweek breather for James and the generous Sunday-Thursday turnaround has led to us taking a gamble on the England international. Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m), who has started every single top-flight match that he has been available for this season, is alongside him as a securer pick.

James averages 5.7 points per match this season, while only Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.1m) have registered more shots amongst defenders than Rudiger.

The ever-unpredictable Lucas Digne (£5.1m) is joint-second among FPL defenders for chances created since his Aston Villa debut, and now takes on Southampton and Leeds United in Double Gameweek 28. Steven Gerrard’s switch to a more compact 4-3-1-2 formation at Brighton on Saturday may have reigned in the Frenchman’s attacking instincts a little, but he still has a share of set pieces, whilst his team’s new, more defensive approach should boost his clean sheet prospects.

Please note the following RMWCT is for someone who has no financial interests in ML this year and my main focus is OR this year as I'm currently at 36,484 (although I am second in my mini-league which is mostly for pride at this point - by three points, 43 clear of third). For these reasons you will see some differentials and please see the reasons in my replies to my own post, but I am open to recommendations/conversations about potential changes. All in all, I am NOT set on this team (yet).

    Sa, Foster
    Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, James, Rudi
    Salah, Foden, Ziyech, Maddi, Bowen
    Jimi, Broja, Gelhardt
    0.1 ITB

This would be my wildcard team.
I plan on using my FH in GW30 then I will probably BB in GW36 that everyone is talking about.

      People have been saying the following;

      A) WC 33/34 so you can get nearly a full squad of DGWers in 36
      B) FH in 36 so you can get a full squad of DGWers

My response is this for each team (brackets = # of unscheduled fixtures remaining).

      - Everton (3) - LOL, no thanks
      - Leicester (3) - Only want Maddison, maybe Vardy if he rediscovers form (Everton/Norwich fixtures could be juicy)
      - Burnley (3) - Think we've learned from their last double
      - Arsenal (2) - Not overly convinced by anyone, would take White, but I like the backline I've made and their games in hand are Spurs away and Chelsea away...
      - Chelsea (2) - Covered
      - Newcastle (1) - Willock at the most? Prefer my midfield (easy to bring in though if I see a run of form for the likes of Maddi/Bowen if either fall off the pace - even Ziyech and Foden could get dropped quickly)
      - Aston Villa (1) - Digne? Coutinho? Ramsey? Again all easy to get in and with the exception of a CS against Brighton all blanked last three GWs
      - Spurs (1) - ... :'D LOL (Also unscheduled game is Arsenal - derby's are unpredictable)
      - Norwich (1) - Enough said
      - Watford (1) - Enough said... Maybe Sarr if he finds some form (have Foster as back-up GK - for BB purposes)
      - Brighton (1) - Extra fixture is City...
      - Southampton (1) - Plan on having Broja (Livra to be monitored)

There will also be more DGWs than the one's you've listed due to cup runs, and perhaps some BGWs in 33 too.

With the DGW in 36 being bigger, it'll be easy to structure a WC squad that has viable cheaper players with doublers, whilst also allowing you to attack the fixtures with your 'main' XI, through to season-end. Added advantage that we can go for some more punty picks now & have the WC to clean it up.

Do agree that the 'popular' players will likely do okay till the end of the season anyway, but there's a big benefit to having the WC/FH/BB available for ~33-36.

No doubt there will be more DGWs based on what I've listed, but I've given reasons as to why I don't want players in those teams. OK form may change between now and then, but given I'm wildcarding now, I think the triple city, triple pool & double city works in my favour.

I will still have BB for 36 and as the weeks go on I can still make minor edits to my team, but the team I've selected above means I'm set for the rest of the season in my opinion, I think everyone has DGW blinkers on and look how that turned out in the past few weeks (with the exception of TC Salah).

I understand that people will say "but Tuchel said *James* played more minutes than he was supposed too". Yeah cool, it's my wildcard, this is supposed to be the team for the rest of the season with minor tweaks. If I lose a point or two this week because his minutes are managed I believe he'll make up for them over the remaining 10-12 games.

I understand that *Ziyech* is a risk, especially with James returning, but he has three goals in his last three games (with clean sheets and six bonus points). The dude is on fire, he has a slight knock and unfortunately Mount is 0.1 more than what I can afford if I ditch Ziyech. I'm willing to give him a punt and if not open to swapping him (recommendations welcome)

      I understand *Foden* hasn't been the best, but I looked at City's midfield (if he doesn't perform well - note he's playing as False 9 a lot - then he can be switched easily too - recommendations welcome);
Bernardo - Started all of the last 6, one attacking return. Been there, done that, had him for the haul
Sterling - Started all of the last 6, didn't make 60 minutes in one fixture, five attacking returns (in two games) too expensive
Kevin - Started five of the last 6, three attacking returns, blanked in last two, dropped for Norwich - also too expensive
Mahrez - Started two of the last 6, red hot form prior to AFCON, minutes are a big risk - too expensive
Gundo - Started three of the last 6, not really known for being attacking, susceptible to rotation

*Gelhardt* is my biggest concern of the squad, but hoping that Jesse Marsch comments about favouring rotation might work in his favour, he does after-all have one goal and three assists in 385 minutes of PL football, which isn't awful for 4.6M

*Jimi* depending on form can be upgraded to Antonio (if he regains form - goal v Southampton in FA Cup and assist v Wolves last GW) but I'd like to see what he can do in his next four FDR2 games (including double).

This would be the alternative WC team to get Son in...

      Ziyech & Foden > Son & Gordon/4.5

      Squad for GW28 would be;
      Sa*
      Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, James*, Rudi*
      Salah (c), Son, Maddi, Bowen
      Jimi

      Foster, Broja, Gordon, Gelhardt

Mate that's a lot of text! But you've put in the research so I'd back yourself. Maddi is hurt currently and just be wary of rotation with your mids (Ziyech, Foden). Backline looks really good

Thank you. Funny enough my squad is quite strong to the point it means benching Maddi/Bowen/Ziyech/Foden each week, but what I am hoping for is that if one is rested/benched, then the other starts. These are my differential preferences that I'm hoping pay off and help me climb the ranks.

Sorry for the huge amount of text, we're limited to formatting. It's also a way that I keep all of my research bundled together in one place. One thing I have missed is today's pressers (slept 12 hours today after a 30+ hour session).

depends if you have WC imo. It looks decent enough.

I'm in a similar situation below. I'd say its fairly strong. This isn't like previous seasons where we all used WC, say, GW 36, and had a bench full of cheap DGWers for 37 in the one and only big DGW of the season

Thanks. I do have WC, but want to use it to build a strong 11 (or so). Not keen on carrying players to BB or having to dribble out transfers or take extra hits to sort later. Also feel like my BBS in big double GW have disappointed more often than not and will probably use one of 2 FH in 36.

More-or-less set for the GW now.
Enough ITB for Weghorst > Kane for free next week.

Planning to go without Salah here with BB: I know it's a bit different

    Dubravka

    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Reece

    Gallagher, JWP, Son, Countinho

    Watkins, Broja

    Bench: Sa, Tierney, Bowen, Vardy

    Looks decent enough?

Team history: WC'd in 25, Did Salah to JWP on a free last GW (didn't play FH), basically to give me money for upgrades this GW with intent to BB. Vardy could be any striker this GW. Will have to come out unfortunately, to bring Salah back in next GW.

Of those options probably Wood, simply because a) he has a double double and b) I’m a Kiwi 😀

Robertson and Tierney on bench could hurt but no other option really. Good to go.

I would like to invite you to Ward Prowse (c) camp though 😉

    Hey DZ, Gtg ?

Big question is who to bench out of TAA Digne Ramsey Hwang & Borja … gone for Ramsey 🙁

    Forster
    Rudiger Digne TAA Coady
    Son Salah C Raphina
    Hwang Borja Kane
    Ramsdale Ramsey Kulu White

      Bench digne, then you're gtg

I would bench Hwang tbh. Ramsey is not a bad about as well, will probably blank in both games.

Thanks all, I could solve the problem by bringing in
      - Sa for Ramsdale
      - Tierney for Coady
      - Dub for Forster

      GW28 would give me
      Sa
      Rudiger Digne TAA
      Son Salah C Raphina Ramsey
      Hwang Borja Kane
      Ramsdale Kulu White Tierney

      Next week 29
      Dub
      Rudiger TAA White Tierney
Son Salah C Raphina Kulu Borja Kane
      Sa Hwang Digne Ramsey

      GW30
      Sa
      Digne White Tierney
      Son Raphina Ramsey Kulu
      Hwang Kane
      Dub TAA Rudiger Borja Salah

      So tough 🙂

I'm presuming so. If I get him instead of Saiss, I can afford a Chelsea defender too.
