What's more surprising out of these
    1. Barcelona wanting Maguire
    2. Ten Hag wants to keep him

If the offer’s any more than 15m then I’d say 2.

It's not that they can't print anything true, but this originates from them. Everything that originates from them and their "sources" is garbage.

Have you ever read these papers?

They want to sell papers/get clicks and will do anything for it. A lot of it will be made up or hyped up by an agent just to get interest.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they get some truth and sometimes some journalists will do the right thing by working for them, but make no mistake about their ethos and objectives.

Just for a bit of context, a lot of the stuff these papers print on the front pages is highly questionable too. So our suspicion is built upon fake stories regarding many many different stories, from royalty to politics to celebrities etc. It's not just football rumours that have shaped our opinion on them.

He did good by me in the latter stages of last season and has been in my draft from the off, esp with his price of 4.5 in LiveFPL. No way will he actually come in at 4.5 though. Conte organises his defences very well but he rotates his wingbacks too much, hence a reliable 90min CB is a very attractive prospect.

So you’d expect probably 3.5 clean sheets then from the first 10 and that’s being very generous and giving Newcastle a 50% chance of a clean sheet per game.

De Gea and Martinez will probably be 5. Can't see how they can justify making Pope 5.5 after the season he has just come off of.

De Gea at 5 is worth a punt. MU are still predicted to be 6th or 7th. That's bad for them but doesn't rule out all their players.

Outside the top 4 and Arsenal, Newcastle's defenders (and GK) should be as attractive a prospect as any. I'll just let those early fixtures slide by and move in c GW6

Does anyone think that we will get a few surprises with the format when the game opens for the new season?

FPL were asking people for ideas from people to improve the game a few months back.

Think the BB could be scrapped, with the 5 sub rule coming into play, the benches could be irrelevant this season because if one of your first 11 don’t start, there’s a good chance they’ll come on from the bench & kill your bench player coming in, would they really have a chip for it? It’s not a popular chip anyway.

      1. _Freddo
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

As in, people will probably strip their bench down after a few weeks if subs wreck bench players coming in.

    2. Nate(U)dog(ie)

I think with the "delay" to FPL's start I do expect some changes. Agree with Freddo that BB is likely to be scrapped, guess we'll see something new in it's place if so. 2FA will be implemented. Unsure of what else really.

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

That’s probably why they aren’t rushing the game out like last year, the 2FA probably takes time to set up on their end.

Is the 2FA to stop the hackings we saw last year? If so I’m all for them taking all the time they need!

Ah actually I made a mistake, I thought they confirmed they'd be working on it but think I've confused it with some mentioning it when FPL sent out those feedback forms to those few users. Still, hopefully it'll happen

    4.5m (4m)
    8m - 7m - 5.5m - 4.5m (4m)
    13m - 8m - 6.5m - 6m (4.5m)
    12m - 7.5m (4.5m)

I think covering price points is the best way to start a season. This allows you to be flexible and build early team value. Above is a general structure which enables this strategy leaving 0.5m in the bank to avoid missing out on players due to any price rises.

How are you looking to approach FPL 22/23?

Won’t leave anything in the bank myself but otherwise I agree with your strategy. Think I’ll be going 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 myself.

I like it as a strategy. I do think that a couple of players that I really wanted in would test my resolve if I were going with this structure.

I spent this evening doing far more geeky analysis than I should ever admit to to essentially come up with a price point template with exactly your logic.

Where I ended up was very close but for:

      1. No money ITB
      2. Sacrifice Trent for Robbo
      3. Have a 5m GK
      4. Have a 5.5m MID instead of 6m
      5. Have a 9m MID instead of 8m - which opens up Chelsea, Liverpool and City assets that could catch fire.

In practice I expect the 5m GKs I like to be 5.5 in which case I’ll either have 0.5m ITB or get Trent in.

Interesting interview, but Jamie's provisional GW1 team is at least 2.0m over budget according to LIveFPL prices (85m + 17m on bench).
Since he put it together in about 5 minutes, I expect his actual GW1 team to be somewhat different.

Interesting interview. I’m feeling pretty set at 5 on the back (based off livefpl so all likely to change) just need to decide whether to go 4 or 3 in the middle.

Essentially does Jesus/Watkins/ Wilson rotating get more points than Saka/Bowen/Maddison/Kulu rotating

5 at the back is just a phase we all go through during pre-season.

Then we tend towards it in game near the end when it turns out there are no strikers playing to their prices and the midfielders have all become rotation risks.

I'm expecting Saka to be 8m and Jesus 9 or 9.5. It's a tougher one because with Nketiah signing a new contract I'm sure he's been promised more minutes so I expect there could be a fair bit of rotation, especially if they sign Raphinha too. Jesus won't get penalties either surely with his awful record so needs to be seen if Martinelli is first choice over Saka (I think someone here posted that he was supposed to be and that Saka took one or two with Martinelli on the pitch when Arteta wanted Martinelli to take it).

Great interview. Interesting on his lack of having 3 at the back, I know most preseasons a lot of people say they'll go big at the back but then it disappears once the season starts. Always hard to go against the grain but good on him.

For me it will be which 6m player completes my structure here whether it be a fwrd or min with +0.5m itb or a def and 4.5 mid, 100% not 5 at the back

      4.5
      8 7 4.5
      13 8 6.5 6
      12 7.5

Site is doing the same thing again. It is the last player I am picking. It won't accept him. I can't put in my choice. It holds onto the default player.
This is the same thing that happened when I tried to bring in Jansson.
Am I the only one experiencing this? So strange, Have more than the needed amount of money.

Now then. Jesus to Le Arse. They're clearing out some players, making it clear they want certain young blood to stay.
If Jesus is 9.5 now being presumably guaranteed a starting berth, does that make him more desirable than a 12.0 Håland? City's goals have traditionally come from the team as a whole. In a 5-0 who sees more returns? Who takes penalties?

All the talk was 4-5-1 but is 5-3-2 now on the table?

I am likely going 532 - though not with Jesus. City played that way as they didn’t have a Haaland like striker, think when aguero was there as an example he was constantly scoring high numbers for an example comparison. Additionally Haaland likely to be on pens as city been missing a pen taker and Haaland has a good record. Contrary Jesus you would think would not take them due to his and record. I will be opting for Haaland and then a 7.5 if I go two up top, or just Haaland if one up top

4-4-2 would probably be better, covers all bases and easy to switch things around.

For every goal Arsenal scores, Man City scores around 1.6 goals over season. So if Arsenal is expected to score 10 goals in first 10 games, Man City will probably score around 16 goals.

Now if we expect Haaland to have ONLY 30% involvement, he would be involved in 5 goals. For Jesus, if we consider on extreme end, say 50% involvement, then he would be involved in 5 goals as well.

I dont expect Jesus to have 50% involvement and I dont expect Halland to have ONLY 30% involvement. In straight competition, Halland should beat him easily but their is a price difference.

I'm not a Haaland fan and would prefer to start with Son/Kane/Salah over him but between Haaland and Jesus, its easy Halland for me.

My issue with that is I think you get better value in the fifth defender then the 4th mid, I.e. Matty cash at 5.5 or Coady at 5 I don’t think can be bettered even up to 6m spent for your 4th mid

You can have either defender you mentioned and spend more than 5.5 on the 4th mid in the 4-4-2 though.

Given City's penalty issues in recent years (think they've scored 18/24 or something like that in the last 3 seasons) and Haaland's recent record (for club and country think he's scored 12 or 13 in a row) I'd say Haaland is likely to take over penalties at City. The issue I'd have with Jesus is that he won't take penalties at Arsenal given his awful record, and I think Nketiah will get a lot of gametime too given he's signed a new deal recently so I'm a little unsure of him for the moment. I thought it was possible when the signing was first rumoured but since Phillips has signed I've seen a few City fans saying they think a double-pivot or one of Phillips and Rodri playing CM and the other DM is possible. If so that might mean that goals will be a little more focused towards the forwards.

"All the talk was 4-5-1 but is 5-3-2 now on the table?"

It's a yes for me. Initially, I was committed to one up top because I didn't see any sub-10m strikers as value for money when put alongside equivalently-priced midfielders or defenders.
If Jesus comes in at 9m, I've made a second draft with 2 up top. Haaland will always be the #1 choice, so it's a decision about whether to go with him alone or have Jesus alongside. It's really a question, for me, of if Jesus outscores Diaz, Kulusevski, Havertz et al in his price-bracket. My provisional guess is, 'Yes, he probably does'.

4-5-1 is always difficult in reality. There isn’t Josh Brownhills up front, the 4.5 forwards don’t play. 2 non playing subs is too much and leaving money on your bench with spare 5.0/5.5 forwards who aren’t even good and you aren’t starting isn’t ideal either

I'm looking at 5-4-1 in the hope of 2 x bench forwards for a total of £9.5m. Gelhardt and a Bournemouth player ideally as the should get minutes in most matches and a the odd attack return.

With Jesus not on penalties, would you not rather save the 1.5 on a Wilson (who has pens?), then use that 1.5 to upgrade your third midfielder? I think a 9.5 forward that we don’t know nailedness on that is not on pens is too much to have as well as Haaland imo. Allows me to have Kulu Salah Odaagard as well as a strong back 5

Loving the feedback here, and elsewhere in the thread. Theoretical FPL at its finest. Ziyech moving, and Sterling coming in spreads big money assets even more.
Perišić being classified as a defender is key for most drafts I'd think.

Always been a 3-4-3 or a 4-4-2 man myself but deffo seeing a lot of positives with 5-3-2 just now, I’d want my 4th mid to be someone who can come into the team tho and switch it up to a 4-4-2.

In terms of signings I wouldn't expect another creative midfielder to come in that would drastically up attacking output. With FFP I just don't think it's priority atm - unless a freebie comes in of course, but neither Eriksen or Lingard look likely. Shelvey, Bruno, Joelinton and Willock I'd expect will be seen as enough at least until January and possibly beyond. There's a very good chance they'll sign a RW though and possibly a striker. If they do sign a striker the profile would be important for Wilson. If it's someone of the Ekitike (young, raw) profile you'd expect them to come in when Wilson is injured, but if it's someone of the DCL (more established) profile then I'd expect them to cut into Wilson's minutes a lot more. Also worth mentioning from what I've read from players' comments, the way Newcastle played at the end of last season is not how Howe wants them to play - he wants them more attacking. You can see last season's style as just doing what needed to be done to stay up. It's Howe's first summer with the players so expect them more drilled and much fitter next season. You've also got to consider Howe has effectively been acting as DOF too until now so you'd imagine he'll have even more time with the team.

Interesting, cheers. I'd say though that having Guimaraes and Wilson in your XI would be overkill, so there's a question of which of the 2 would provide better value. In LiveFPL, Bruno is 1.5m less than Wilson.

prefer Wilson personally. I'm not convinced the Bruno form at the end of last season wasn't a purple path in terms of attacking output. He's obviously a very good player but I think something like 40% of his career goals came in the second half of last season for Newcastle (and he didn't start the first 6 or so), which doesn't feel sustainable. Maybe a new role though so probably one to watch. Also I'd keep an eye on whether he plays deep in preseason or the more advanced role.

If I'm honest... I'm happy to punt high on Arsenal to start with.
I want the game to launch so that Raphinha is still a Leeds player when I make my draft and I'm going to try and punt on 4 Arsenal players to start the season for their run.

I'll then not make tfrs for a few weeks (or at least until my first fire starts in GW2/3) and at that point it'll be easy to switch Jesus + a MID if I need to.

I'm also not so sure it's black and white that he won't be on pens.
But do agree it's a watching brief to see how that plays out.

Arsenal fixtures are very favourable so definitely don’t see Jesus being an issue if you go down that route, and definitely easy to transfer out to a 7.5 and use the money elsewhere. I’m just going to sit on the fence and see how he starts I think due to already taking a calculated risk on Haaland

Now to then (last time in this very same page) I read some comments about BB not being a popular chip. I must be an exception then, because I enjoy it a lot. No u not..Don't see what's the fuss about BB or any chip for that matter...we all play to the same rules.
I get the issue with value on the bench, planning for it ect...but is it not the majority who had less luck with it that's having an issue?

      1. Brimble82

I scored 161 from my BB last season.
        I think that’s pretty decent.

I would still bin it in a flash.
For me, it’s about having to rework your team to have a playing bench of ‘decent’ options.
It plays into the hands of those managers who like to play with a ‘squad’ of 15, but penalises those managers (like me) who prefer to ‘leave it all on the field’ and invest as much as possible in their XI.

The GW itself when you play it… lots of fun.
But the prep weeks and mop up weeks after… not worth it!

But then, if it were me, I’d bin all chips including weekly captain!

Binning all the chips, as you suggest, would penalise proactive managers, whereas dead (or almost) teams would take an advantage, which I find not fair. Of course, only my opinion.

That is really interesting - as I think exactly the opposite!
Chips are like a mini-get out of jail free card for casuals/those that fail to plan (plan to fail).
I consider myself to be pretty proactive, and I would far prefer to plan for a season where I have to build up to/around blank GWs or doubles.
It's a very theoretical/hypothetical conversation as they obviously aren't going to bin them, and the game is now fuelled by the 'click through casuals' generating all the marketing revenue, but as a purist, I don't see how a removal of chips would help a dead team.
            Walk me through it?

If they do use this "get outs", then they are proactive. As for really casuals and dead teams, I'll put an example. I magine a Gw with only 4 games with no important team playing. Using a Free Hit can give me a great advantage against dead teams. In my mini league I've seen teams scoring 0 points in such gameweeks. What's the alternative? Selling all my players from Liverpool, City and Chelsea in the previous gameweeks in order to have enough players fot the reduced one?

I mean... I'm not really worried about dead teams.
If we're competing with them past GW7 then we're defo doing something very wrong!

                Proactive players adapt right?
                B/DGWs - we adapt.
                Injuries - we adapt.
                Project restart - we adapt.
                Covid cancellations - we adapted.

If all chips were removed, we'd adapt.
Again, not saying it would happen, but I believe I would enjoy a purer game without any chips.
But whilst they stay, I will use them!

(And then complain like hell every time my captain blanks!!! 😉 )

Absolutely agree with captain blanks 😀

In fact I absolutely agree with this last post of yours. Whatever the rules, we will adapt.

The difference between us is that I think that proactive players will adapt to chips (and to any new rule) better than casuals. And that's an advantage against them. Going back to BB, have you seen the limited budget that casuals have when they try and assemble their BB teams?

                    Good point!
I had a tinker with a GW1BB (because I wanted it gone) as opposed to my usual GW34/36BB - and I was shocked at the limited bench/squad I could get (based on Raga's prices).

Then I realised that that was because by the end of the season we've all amounted our great wealth and are able to flex our 'bench muscles' a little bit more.

Either way... I'm genuinely keen to find out what changes they are bringing into the game this season.

Probably because City haven’t started pre-season training yet!

Jack’s busy having the time of his life in Vegas, whilst Foden is getting his ear chewed off by his missus in the South of France!

Sport Bible claims they don’t start pre-season training for another two weeks yet:
“As per the latest information provided by Paul Hirst of the Times, Manchester City's players plan to report for pre-season in the second week of July, before jetting off to the US the week after.”

Sky has up a list of (official) preseason games that are currently planned for each PL team. Some start fairly early, like Forest and Arsenal on July 8th (which is 10 days away) for example, some don't have fixtures listed until late July (like City on July 21st) but inevitably will have more to be announced or just will play some behind closed doors

    Hiya guys...

What tools do you use to help make your decisions on FPL? I'm not a huge fan of data etc. as I think playing with your intuition is as good as anything. However, a quick look now and again on stats might help. Any links, or advice would be appreciated.

FBref is what I use most, lot of good and easily accessible data there. Transfermarkt can be decent too depending on what you're looking for (stuff like minutes played, record v specific teams, positions in which a player has played, etc.)

I havent looked at predicted prices etc. But Firmino price must drop this season due to minutes / score last year. Would guess Firmino is in the 7.5m bracket. Possibly 8m.

Pretty sure last time they teased a players price then released, then did the same over and over every few hours over the course of a few days So a tiny tweak in how they're doing things maybe this time they'll drop more than one price per hour when the floodgates open

No and by which point I’m hoping to have somewhat navigated the 4.5 defender minefield and transfer out Coady to a 4.5 allowing me to bring in a non fodder mid potentially Harrison if the budget stretches

        Strong!
The three of us seem to be circling similarly.
        Mine is currently:
        Sanchez
        TAA/Robbo/VVD/Cancelo/Gabriel
        Odegaard/Raph/Kulu
        Jesus/Haaland

If any of the above come in £0.5m cheaper, I may take Gabriel down to Tomiyasu and upgrade Sanchez to Ederson.
Pack up and let the boys run with it for the first few GWs!
        4x ARS, 3x MCI, 3x LIV 1x TOT

        Ultimate casual.

Very strong team, only concern if no bench is Raphina being rotated but looks a solid team. I can’t bring myself to go without pool attack though as too many moves to get a premium mid in?

          1. Brimble82
            • 7 Years

Yeah, it feels very against the grain for me.
I was sold on Luis Diaz coming into my team as I thought he looked scintillating at the tail end of last season.
But I've ran a fair few numbers, and now I'm quite sold on my triple LIV defence.

Of course Arsenal could very well just 'do an Arsenal' and screw up their easy fixture run and leave me at +4m!

My draft above is quite dependent on finding a playing £4.5m emerging in pre-season, but also, I do think that because of the 5-sub rule, we'll see less autosubs coming in anyway.
Someone put it as this recently:
            - either your player starts and gets 45-75 mins and you're happy
            - or they get subbed on and get 45-15 mins against tired legs, and you could still be happy!

It's an anomaly for the forthcoming season that we have very limited data to work off of, so I'm gonna role with the above and see how it plays out (hoping (from behind my Liverpool sized sofa) that the attacking points are shared across Jota, Firmino, Nunez, Diaz & Salah - in that order!)

            1. Chilli Heatwave
              • 7 Years

I did consider going Diaz one point interesting that you chose triple def over him, guess I see him getting max 180 and at that point VVD provides much better value. I do think Diaz will be second for forwards points for Lpool though.

I am also dependant on a 4.5 option, hopefully two, who can provide a 1 pointer if necessary. Agree with auto sub analysis though thanks for the breakdown.

                • 7 Years
                3 years, 5 months ago

Exactly. I think Diaz will do really well, but I think it will be very comparable to VVD - thus the value is far great in Virg rather than Luis!

But then watch him blow up in GW1 and blow me out of the water!

I hope Chelsea sign Nathan Ake as rumoured, they could really do with more CBs. I don't want them playing 4 at the back this season, as I want to get on board with James and Chilly. Otherwise I'll start my FPL team with the goal scoring machine Chalobah.

I'd be surprised if he goes especially to a rival, he looked a lot better for City last season when he had to come in and he's very capable of playing at LB too. I can understand City letting Sterling go with the possibility of him going for free next year and given his minutes haven't improved but doubt they'd want Ake going there
