With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is Burning Questions co-host Pras.

Fantasy Premier League is back! That rush when the game opens and you quickly check some prices (personally I went straight into checking the £4.5 midfielders and forwards), the warm fuzzy feeling buying the big hitters, and the beginning of multiple screenshots on your phone. That’s what FPL is about. No doubt the disappointments will come after Gameweek 1 deadline, but let’s enjoy the next few weeks first.

For my first article in the 2022/23 season, I’ll share a very early draft. In fact, I wouldn’t even call it a draft – more like the initial gut feel/instinctive picks given the pricing. I will use this to talk about my immediate thinking and some pros and cons of going for this structure. The only guarantee is that this will change as the pre-season friendlies, the Community Shield and incoming transfers inevitably add vital information over the next few weeks.

Macro

Everything you need to know about the FFS World Cup of FPL

A couple of macro points first.

The fact that the entire game has unlimited transfers during the World Cup makes this effectively a 16-week game with one Wildcard that must be played during this period. The first Wildcard can therefore be used strategically to either (i) pre-plan for fixture swings or (ii) act as an emergency bailout by going ultra-aggressive initially. I like both ideas.

We have been blessed with a unique situation where the best teams also have the best first few fixtures. In the first seven Gameweeks on the Fantasy Football Scout fixture ticker, Arsenal are #1, Chelsea are #3, Liverpool are #4 and Manchester City are #7 when the matches are sorted by difficulty. We don’t need to be taking unnecessary punts on promoted teams or bottom-half sides with good fixtures; remember the Adam Armstrong (£5.5m) gambles last summer?

The premiums

Who are the best FPL captain options for Double Gameweek 36?

Currently, I strongly favour the two-premium structure with Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and using the extra funds for more full-backs. However, given the attractive pricing across the board, I do expect a few ‘threemium’ drafts. Andy North and I did a video for Scout this week on the different structures, so do check that out:

The defence

FPL 2022/23 prices released: Live updates - James and Chilwell revealed 1

I ended the final five Gameweeks of last season with Reece James (£6.0m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Marcos Alonso (£5.5m) in my team. I very much intend to continue this theme with these “game-breakers”. Going back to the ‘good teams and good fixtures’ strategy, I genuinely see points at both ends of the pitch for these players yet again; it’s how the game has evolved now.

My five picks are therefore Alexander-Arnold, Cancelo, Robertson, Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) and Ivan Perisic (£5.5m). Every single one of these guys could have arguably a million more in price and still be good picks.

I am fairly certain I will have the first three but I am still scouting Chelsea for any change in formation/transfer activity to decide whether it is an ‘and/or’ with Reece James (£6.0m) and Chilwell. On Perisic, I want to see his fitness and minutes in pre-season and am ideally hoping that Sergio Reguilon (£4.5m) is sold but the upside is certainly there with him in the Antonio Conte wing-back system.

Thoughts on this draft? Kulu can go to Dias or Coutinho for GW2:

    Pope
    Trent | White | Romero | Cancelo
    Salah | Neto | Kulu | Foden
    Jesus | Haaland

Bench: 4m defender and GK | Pereira | Greenwood

White has zero goals and assists in his last 2 seasons, Castagne might offer more attacking wise if you tempted.

      Solid team but:

      1. If you like Diaz why wouldn’t you start with him against Fulham?
      2. Better options than White and Romero at same price

    Raya
    Taa - Chilwell - Trippier - Tomiyasu
    Salah - Diaz - Martinelli - Wissa
    Haaland - Kane

Hopefully Aké signs for Chelsea, then I'll swap him in for Chilwell and upgrade Tomiyasu

Very similar. I think Alisson is really good value and so I disagree with people saying he's a waste of a Liverpool slot. However I really want Diaz in my team

Fair enough. I'd like to be able to squeeze him in too, to be fair, and consider him a lot stronger than Jesus.

Probably already talked about but with Azpi and maybe Alonso on the way out I think this Chelsea defense might be a shambles.

    They'd start Thiago & Chalobah...maybe Sarr.

And if they bring someone in it might not be for a while meaning they won't be settled with the first squad.

Makes me want Mount more - as they'll have to shift to be more attacking.
Can't decide if it makes me want Chilwell/James more or less.

Should be an interesting pre-season there.

      They should be signing Aké

Ake would really suit their system I think. No rudiger but he's a good player

I figure they'll get some decent players in - but still will take a while to adapt.
Could have a whole new CB pairing to bed in.

The team in general is weird/in flux. I had been pretty keen on getting 2 of James/Chilwell/Mount in but I'm a bit wary the more I think about it.

But ... will Sterling take a share of Mount's attacking, or be hanging up-front with Havertz?

Yeah I think they might have a messy start. Weren't really looking too solid towards end of last season either. Plus the back 4 talk is enough to put me off even James/Chilwell for now. The fixtures could tempt me into Mount, as long as they don't sign Raphinha

    4. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years

I have Chilwell right now and I think at the price he's at I won't change him but I don't disagree. Their negotiations for Kounde seem to have been a waste over the last year and de Ligt will be a hard signing to pull off, especially with Chiellini gone and Juventus viewing him as the future core of their defence. I can see things going south but at his price I think I'm still going to take the chance on Chilwell.

    Most recent draft:

    Mendy
    TAA - Cancelo - Chilwell - Digne - Tomiyasu
    Salah - Diaz - BrunoG
    Haaland - Jesus

    4.0 - Neto - 4.0 - 4.5

    A) TAA > Robbo and bank 0.5m?
    B) Should I be worried about Diaz rotation? Could go Mount, Saka or gamble on a city mid.
    C) I like Haaland and Jesus as forward options, but don't particularly like starting with players on new teams

Starting XI: Meslier (GK), Firpo, Koch, Roca, Rodrigo (C), Struijk, Harrison, Gelhardt, Drameh, Greenwood, Gray.

Substitutes: Klaesson (GK), Forshaw, Allen, Davis, Bate, Miller, McGurk, Joseph, Shackleton, Moore, Mullen.

Greenwood stock rising. What how many appearances will he actually be making? Enough to put people off upgrading him if another striker hits form? Price could plummit

    No Salah ...
I tried for 24 hours, but something just felt wrong.
Son & Diaz now reverted to Salah and Kulu
    (yes, I'm a coward).

JWP over Rashford isn't cowardly, no sign that Rashford has suddenly picked up any confidence or form so it's sensible. JWP is as nailed as a player can be and will be on pens so he'll get you points here and there. Southampton always have a decent period at some point of every season, never know it could be early on

problem with the 8.0m price point midfielder is that say you pick someone like Foden, you are happy with him but he is your guy to move out if a bandwagon emerges in GW1. Arsenal play on Friday so if Saka hits a brace and is seen as must have by everyone then he will have risen 0.1m before Foden even plays on the Sunday forcing you into a early move otherwise 2 transfers are needed.

    1. The Mentaculus

yeah don't like being rushed into transfers, just something to think about. If Arsenal do well in that first Friday night game then expect Martinelli, Saka, Jesus etc. to be at least 0.2m more expensive prior to GW3 when people suddenly decide they want to invest in Arsenal ahead of the Bournemouth and Fulham games. A few might be priced out if team structure is rigid.

      Bowen is the answer!

Nah I agree, being able to afford two 8m spots would be great but realistically you're hoping to stick with whoever you have. I saw the Championship fantasy game has a system where any price changes only occur after the whole GW is finished, so if the last game is on a Sunday then changes will happen early morning on Tuesday. I wish we'd have something similar in FPL. Fabio Borges said he pretty much never pays attention to fluctuating prices when deciding on transfers, I'm trying to cut down on hits and unnecessary transfers so I'm going to hope to try to ignore it when I can

    Haaland Kane (4.5)

I like the idea. Playing Andreas or N. Williams every week is a risk but why not. Martinelli and Doherty are the main differential punts but have v. good upside.

Wouldn't want to start Andreas. Might have to downgrade Cancelo

Martinelli and Doherty get benched in one GW (which is certainly possible) and you're in big trouble

I like it, but then again I am trying the same but with Son.

      Mendy* (4.0)
      TAA Cancelo Chilwell Tomiyasu (4.0)
      Salah Martinelli Andreas Son (4.5)
      Haaland Johnson (4.5)

*I am between Mendy or Raya atm. That 0.5 extra could be handy.

Not convinced anyone needs two premium forwards,
You cant captain all 3 premiums.
I'd downgrade Kane or Haaland to someone in the £7-8M range (Antonio maybe?) and get a ~£8M midfielder. there are plenty to choose from .

2 premium forwards doesn’t work for me in my experience, adding the extra in defense is prob better this season or maybe midfield in your case

Why is Tomiyasu the better pick than White?
Also seeing a lot of Chilwell > James.

I have James and Tomiyasu atm but all the love for Chilwell has me reconsidering.

That draft looks really poor to me. A midfield of Salah - Martinelli - Neto. No thank you.

Seeing a lot of 5-4-1 drafts flying around.

    Fabio Borges last two season:

    38 GWs x 2 = 76 GWs
    76 - 8 BGW - 2 BB = 66 GWs

    Times he played with:

    3 Forwards: 43 / 66 = 65,1%
    2 Forwards: 20 / 66 = 30,3%
    1 Forward: 3 / 66 = 4,5 %

    3 Defenders: 39 / 66 = 59%
    4 Defenders: 27 / 66 = 41%
    5 Defenders: 0 / 66 = 0%

    Just saying!

It happens every season. Folks optimise to last years points thinking they are picking a team for the season. In reality they are picking for 8 weeks and if you go 5 at the back you probably just locking in early wildcard.

What will happen is someone like off template like Bruno, or some budget striker like solanke will crush it in the first few weeks and become template. Flexible plus coverage

Unpopular opinion but I’m going away from the overwhelming template with one player, I’m taking a chance with Fernandes with ronaldo looking like he’s going

I think there’s too much value dropping salah. E.g. Salah and Jesus can be fernandes and Kane/haaland for 0.5 more

    Raya

    James Trent cancelo Doherty Tomiyasu

    Fernandes Dias martinelli neto Andreas

    Kane haaland archer

I’m going to go anyone but greenwood who could go down in price if another 4.5 mil gets some game time

It’ll probably change if another 4.5 mil player could look like getting more play time

Dangerous but I’ve still Dias covering Liverpool’s attack and what I lose on pens with salah I should make up with United spurs and maybe city with haaland?

I think the team looks extremely strong… Doherty or tomiyasu could be downgraded for extra strength in midfield, Neto -> pulisic/ ziyech if they can hold down a starting spot

I like it. 2 things need to happen to get bruno back to his best. Ronny needs to fook off and he needs to play a free role with minimal tactical restrictions. He isn't gonna cut it in a ten haag midfield but could be unleashed on the right of the front 3 or even as a false 9

I agree and not completely sold on him, but I could downgrade for an 8 mil and upgrade martinelli to an 8 mil or Neto to say Sancho

    Unpopular opinion:

The "big at the back" strategy it’s a trap. It’s force you to play with one or two 5.5-6.0 mid structure, that isn’t sustainable in the long term (no good players in that price bracket). That’s an structure change waiting to happen.

One £5.5m mid is workable, plenty to choose from and at least one of them will have a decent season.

Soucek, Fornals or Neto for me. But potential for Olise, Eze, Gordon, Ramsey, McGinn or Neves as well.

      2. Fletch69

        I think it's workable;

        Reya
        TAA / VVD / Cancelo / Laporte / Cash
        Salah / Son / JWP
        Jesus

        Bench:
        Bolcombe / Andreas / Greenwood

Leaves £11m for a Mid and Striker, one of whom will be on the bench

So Mitro & 4.5 or Neto/Fraser & Undav/Broja or Johnson & Rice etc etc. Enough choice to find a pairing that works after a couple of weeks
