The ‘Sleeper’ series returns to Fantasy Football Scout pages this summer.

In these articles, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who had a quieter 2021/22, be it through injury, loss of form or otherwise, who we think have the potential to make an impact in the coming season.

Here, we look at David Raya (£4.5m), who could push his way back into our thoughts as an FPL asset in 2022/23.

The screenshots and data are from our Premium Members Area – sign up today for £2.49 a month (billed annually) to get access to all of these statistics and a whole lot more.

2021/22: FPL RECORD AND STATS

FPL 2022/23 'sleeper' picks: David Raya 1
  • Starts: 24
  • Goals conceded: 27
  • Clean sheets: 8
  • Saves: 78
  • FPL points: 95 (4.0 per match)

David Raya was one of Brentford’s best players in their debut Premier League campaign, as they ended in 13th place, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

The 26-year-old featured in 24 games for The Bees despite missing a few months due to a knee injury, conceding only 27 goals and keeping eight clean sheets, form which earnt him a maiden international call-up for Spain.

In that time, Raya also collected five bonus and 20 save points, proving himself to be a very capable shot-stopper at this level.

The Spaniard ranked 17th in his position for FPL points, but matched Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) on a points-per-match basis, a record that placed him joint-fourth among regular starters, only behind Alisson (£5.5m), Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) and Ederson (£5.5m):

With Raya injured last season, Brentford missed his presence greatly, with his deputy Alvaro Fernandez conceding 24 goals in 12 appearances, only registering one clean sheet.

However, following his return to action in February, it’s fair to say The Bees and Raya stepped up a level.

From Gameweek 24 onwards, in 15 starts, Raya averaged 4.1 points per match, a tally only two regular starting ‘keepers could beat (see below).

Five clean sheets were kept in that time, while the Spaniard also racked up 56 saves – only Illan Meslier (£4.5m), Nick Pope (£5.0m), Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) recorded more.

Raya’s passing ability, which is crucial to the way Brentford try to play out from the back, is also worth noting, with only Alisson, Ederson and Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) surpassing his BPS pass completion total of 32.

“I’ve always felt comfortable with the ball at my feet, and we work on that every week. The manager wants us to be another attacker, an extra element in bringing the ball out, creating chances and passes, short and long.” – David Raya

“The goalkeeper could wear the number ten shirt. He has sent several incredible balls, exactly what you should do when you play against us.” – Jurgen Klopp on David Raya after Brentford’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool in September

2022/23: THE PROSPECTS

Squad steps up as Robertson maintains fine form: FPL notes from Liverpool v Brentford 5

After a stellar first season in the Premier League, Brentford will look to continue improving in 2022/23.

And their end-of-season form bodes well, as they won seven of their last 11 matches, keeping four clean sheets while only conceding 12 goals.

“We will keep the foundations from this year – the defensive side of the game, fitness and set pieces. Then we’d like to add a bit more on the offensive side of the game in terms of controlling games like we did against West Ham at home. That was a very good example of how I’d like us to dominate games even more.” – Thomas Frank

“I don’t believe in all this second season stuff or the narrative around it. That said, I know we can be relegated next season, but I also know we can finish seventh. Everything’s possible between 20th and seventh. We want to add layers, build and end higher and play better football. That’s the aim, but you never know what happens to a team when they get a lot of injuries or lose momentum. But hopefully we’ll avoid that and build.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford ended the 2021/22 season ranked eighth overall for expected goals conceded (xGC, see below), but the fact the players now look comfortable in a 3-5-2 and 4-3-3 offers encouragement that they can adapt tactically to different situations and maybe improve upon that defensive record.

Notably, the Bees have a sustained good run of fixtures right through until the World Cup break.

In fact, they don’t meet one of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12, while Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool aren’t concerns until the festive period.

The big six sides they do encounter in Gameweeks 8 and 12 both have to come to the Brentford Community Stadium, too.

Now, with hopefully an injury-free season ahead of him, managers looking for value should consider Raya, who is perhaps the pick of the £4.5m ‘keepers on offer in FPL.

    Raya better than Mendy.
His value can match Allison too!
I talk about value, not total points or Point per match.

No one but this is how your mind trick you. 🙂

Defender is defender. You cant make them a same category like a mid or forward.

Trent is good. Really good but if we talk about value even 5.0 defenders outscore him.

When we dont captain him, we doesnt need him (in case other player in the same category have more value).

That's the thing. Pick a squad of the best value players and you'll have a pretty mediocre season.

            Thats the different thing.

You dont neet Trent even his ppm is high 6.5 when u only captain Salah who have 7+ ppm. Because other defenders have more value.

When u said about mediocre value best team, thats different. Just use extra fund to upgrade elsewhere. Can upgrade Neto to Saka or Mitro to Jesus. .. anything.

            1. Andy_Social

Well I think many people build their squads by starting with their essential picks, then looking at the value players to fill the rest of the squad. I think starting with just 2 premium captain picks and then going to the best value players will give you a weak squad - albeit with plenty money in the bank. If you're saying then go and spend that money upgrading some players, a lot of people would simply upgrade their 5.0 or 4.5m defender to trent.

Its not 'so plenty', because what I mean as value is not just cheap.

There are not many players who have high value. Last season, one of the best value is Cancelo. He is 7.0. 0.5 cheaper than Trent and he is in my team.

Value player is someone who is capable archieve points more than their price suggest.

I dont suggest people just take only 4.5 defenders. Lol.

Yes, if we have some more money, we can upgrade to Trent . I said earlier he is good, very good. So it doesnt matter. But back to the main point, Trent is not a must have. He is luxury but not must have.

So you want to buy a cheaper better value defender, so you can put more money on a poorer value attacking player?

That gets you less points overall. You should want as much of your cash sitting on the best value assets possible. This is why TAA is so good.

Same question. Boring. We talk about value, not total point.

Remember Trent score 200 + but he costs more too.

We need him just when he perform but other defenders doesnt perform.

But if Trent doesnt perform, than.....? 🙂

How do we know when he isn't going to perform? The reason he hauls huge points totals every season is he's more consistent than any other defender. That's why he's a secure set-n-forget option. It's lesser, non-premium defenders that are streaky, ones you need to hop on and off and gauge the moment time and again and hope to be right every time.

We all understand the difference between value and total points. You trying to repeatedly explain it to us is the only boring thing here. The question you seem to be missing is where are you going to put those extra funds that will virtually GUARANTEE you the extra points that simply upgrading to TAA would almost certainly do? Robbo is about the only answer I would concede. Good luck to you

I agree. Sleeper picks should be players who didn't do much last season.
Raya had an excellent 2021-22 season, based on which he is an obvious choice for those who don't want to spend more than 4.5m on their goalkeeper..

But I am concerned about the possibility of second season syndrome. I'd like to hold back and see hoe The Bees start the season.

De Bruyne's fbref page looks funny. 99th percentile for the most important stats. Don't really get why he isn't as popular as other premium players. Best player in the world imho.

To pivot Haaland/Neto to KdB/Johnson would cost an extra million. Otherwise, I'd strongly consider it

KDB's only ever had one invincible/incredible season 19-20, otherwise patchy FPL wise

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

In 20-21 he had the same xGI per 90 minutes as in 19-20. It was the highest in the league. Finishing was the only issue. He's scoring very well in FPL when he's not injured frankly speaking.

    3. KAPTAIN KANE SERVES THE PAI…

Maybe so, but doesn’t translate to being as good as fpl points player like Salah or Sonsational

Would argue if Son is scoring more points in FPL than KDB to be honest. Would rate them similar. Apart from last season, KDB has better offensive stats (Son is a finishing outlier tho, so I would add something like 15% to his stats).

Leon Bailey looked very sharp in todays Villa friendly and took his goal well. A few more pre season performances like this and he could be a very shrewd pick at 5m

Problem with £5mil mids is predicting returns.

So much easier to plug in a defender for clean sheet points at that price.

Vs. trying to figure out when the 7th/8th(?) highest scoring player for Villa will bag us a return.

      1. JELLYFISH
        • 14 Years

Fair comment, although I’m looking at him more as an alternative to a 6m/6.5 option, which in itself opens up additional funds to invest elsewhere in the team.

Hey, if you believe you've found a 3rd / 4th Mid in Bailey then I'd agree. Great value to free up funds.

Also, go to take low risk punts too. Not a difficult fix / easy enough to bench.

      I don't think there's a wrong answer here.

*IF* things go the way we currently predict (i.e. Kane continues to play at the lvl he has / Haaland is the talisman for City) then the total points tally is going to be within a 10/20pts by the season's end.

Don't stress, you can't make a mistake when both choices appear to be solid.

Thanks - I know they say not to book a transfer in, but it feels this could be a real masterstroke to get ahead early.

Many don’t have neither at all let alone one of them, so doubling up feels at gut it’s upside outweighs the downside
