With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’re welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our contributors will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is Az, who added to his list of top 10k finishes in 2021/22.

Ah, pre-season hype. Of course, a 4-0 drubbing of Liverpool’s reserve squad and a 4-1 victory over Melbourne Victory has got me excited over Manchester United players, who I vowed to avoid just a week ago.

The thing is, with “big at the back”, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Pedro Neto (£5.5m) featuring in almost every draft I see, I am looking for ways in which I can differentiate my squad a little bit.

I always like to have at least 2-3 players who I can get a bit excited about when I watch them play (usually before the crippling disappointment sets in). My first draft video for Fantasy Football Scout over on YouTube for example had me talking up the prospects of Chelsea-bound Raheem Sterling (£10.0m). I’m still very much sold on the new Blues recruit, but of course, when you see what taking out a premium-priced player for the rest of your squad can do, there is temptation.

So, I’ve traded Sterling out for Luis Diaz (£8.0m), who watchers of my “Who is the best £8.0m midfielder” video will know I rated as my top pick in his price bracket. A popular choice on the FFS boards, I’m backing him to have a stellar campaign after his immediate impact when signing for Liverpool in January.

MAN UTD PLAYERS

Using this money, I’ve then been able to upgrade one of my heroes of last season, Bruno Guimarães (£6.0m), who sits in a whopping 20% of all teams at the time of writing. In comes Jadon Sancho (£7.5m). Now I know full well this is off the back of some, quite frankly, meaningless pre-season friendlies. However, when I initially saw his price tag of just £7.5m (a huge £2.0m down from £9.5m last season) my curiosity was piqued. To have any chance of success in the Premier League next season, Erik ten Haag will need to get the absolute best out of Sancho, who managed 38 goals and 51 assists in his time at Borussia Dortmund but struggled in his maiden season in England.

A big factor in my decision as to whether or not to start with Sancho will likely depend on what happens with talismanic figure Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m). Rumours continue to swirl that he isn’t happy at the club, but in truth, it is my belief that his presence in the team negatively impacts the assets around him. If we see Ronaldo depart the club, might we see Anthony Martial (£7.0m) or even Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) lead the line for the Red Devils? If this happens, ten Haag’s new “press high, play aggressively” approach would likely see United’s cut-price attackers back on the radar. However, if Ronaldo sticks around and the team remains glued to feeding the 37-year-old, I fear their assets may be dead weights once again.

I want to see a bright, bold and attacking United side. While Ronaldo’s goals were crucial for Manchester United finishing semi-respectably, my sense is that his general presence in the team hindered those around him. A perfect example of this was the 3-0 win against Spurs last season, in which he scored all three goals. However, United’s general play was really poor, and they simply relied on moments of brilliance from the Portuguese superstar. Looking at Ronaldo’s defensive contributions for example, over the season, he made just two interceptions across all matches (equal with Edinson Cavani who played just 162 minutes). In terms of tackles, Ronaldo’s total of 12 paled to the likes of Diogo Jota (£9.0m; 81), Ivan Toney (£7.0m; 59) and even the likes of Neal Maupay (£6.5m; 31). In fairness to Ronaldo, Spurs forward Harry Kane (£11.5m) didn’t show massive difference in his stats, with just three interceptions and 26 tackles. However, Kane created nearly double the number of chances (49) compared to Ronaldo (26), highlighting the impact he has on the players around him. No player had a better mins/shot than Ronaldo last season (22.3), but it’s likely these will be shared more around the team if he was to drop out, with Sancho (hopefully) reaping the rewards.

    No love at all for Rodri?

    Regular starter, consistent points scorer, only 6.0m.

    Last season only 10 pts fewer than Foden, 8pts fewer than Mahrez.

      Interesting shout. 7g 2a last season (no penalties), and I do think that with Phillips joining he may continue this trend he has of late of pushing further up in certain games and getting into shooting positions around the edge of the box like against Villa on the last day. His passing range is superb and he does win the ball high up the pitch at times putting him in good positions for assists.

      Just pick and stick him in their all season, just don't sell when others haul. A consistent option.

    Thoughts? With Raphina gone I think Sinisterra will rip it up at Leeds....have considered Saka but have Jesus, want a Chelsea in there.

    Sanchez
    Cancelo TAA Tomiyasu
    Salah Neto Mount Sinisterra
    Jesus Haaland Wilson

      I agree - high hopes for a goalscoring winger and Leeds early fixtures are decent.

      Will he fit into Marsch's strange 4-2-2-2 system though? Hopefully he changes it to 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 but Leeds got into difficulties with that formation last season.

        Indeed, some questions still out there. I'm hoping he can at least be this season's Sarr if not last season's Raphina.

      Had Wilson in my first draft, but currently planning around Mitrovic or even Broja to free up funds for BATB.

      Tomiyasu injury prone and currently injured. Get Botman or Jonny for 4.5m.

        I just really like Toon's early fixtures. Mitro has been in a draft. Isn't Broja back at Chelsea? Hard to see him starting many.

      Not overly confident on Sinisterra just yet, read from a few people that watched him last season say he's decent but flatters to deceive a lot and it'll be a bit of a step-up for him. He'd be a wait and see for me, if I was to punt on a Leeds mid to start with it'd be Aaronson (which I think I will be doing)

    Thinking Martinelli will get good minutes and maybe pens.
    If ManC dont buy Cucurella, Walker will play most games.

      I suspect that 3/4 bench won't start? Bit too risky with Liverpool front three rotation; Martinelli not guaranteed minutes; Perisic injured currently; Cucurella to Man City? Need some flexibility.

      I would get a 4.5m Def and 5.5m Mid, and see how Spurs, Arsenal line up.

    what's the deal with Man City? their squad is looking a bit bare compared to normal - any strong rumours of transfers in to come?

    1. @persecuted_by_mods
      4 years, 1 month ago

      They've actually been this way since last season, the squad wasn't as stacked as it usually is, led to less rotation from Pep!

    2. Paul Psychic Octopus

      Well they've signed Phillips and Haaland, let Sterling and Jesus go and now possibly Zinchenko.

      Bilva not for sale apparently and is staying.

      They have plenty of front four options if they start with Rodri and Phillips in the double pivot. KDB, Grealish, Gundog, Mahrez, Grealish, Foden, Bilva. So hardly bare.

      Be interesting to see if Cole Palmer gets more game time. Saw him at Swindon last season and he was MOM. Looks a real prospect.

        'bare compared to normal' - who are the wide players? Foden, Mahrez and Grealish... they usually have about 5/6

          They sold Jesus and sterling and have haaland and alvarez now. It's it's the same number of attacking options as last season

      The following names have been mentioned:

      - Gnabry - contract renewed with München, so this one’s not gonna happen

      - Sané - mostly ”would you have him back” type of discussion among fans, the consensus was ”no” and probably nothing to it, anyway

      - Neymar - a bit like Sané with no concrete links, doubt there’s any actual interest

      - Doku - wouldn’t mind this if he came cheap

      Have to remember Alvarez can play on the wing, plus there’s Cole Palmer. They’ll be fine with no further incomings.

      Man City look great to me. They are a Cucurella signing away from having a complete squad IMO.

      GK: Ederson, Ortega
      LB: Cucurella*, Cancelo, Ake
      RB: Cancelo, Walker
      LCB: Laporte, Ake
      RCB: Dias, Stones

          Bear in mind Palmer is supposed to get a lot more mins this season (according to The Athletic). Bernardo could also revert there if Phillips is playing. Plus Alvarez can play RW too I believe. So I wouldn't get too excited about Mahrez. Think Grealish may get more mins though & Foden should be regular starter

          Just my opinion of course but I don’t like Neto or any of the 5.5 mids, 6.0 minimum in that starting bracket for me.

          Prefer Bowen to Saka but again that’s another 0.5.
          Prefer Kane to Haaland at the start.

          If you wanted to find the extra 1m for the first 2 points you could swap Robertson to Chilwell.

          But go with what you feel.

    Best set and forget 8.5 keeper pairing?

    A) Brentford -> Raya & Balcombe
    B) Brighton -> Sanchez & Steele
    C) Everton -> Pickford & Begovic
    D) Leeds -> Meslier & Klaesson
    E) Bournemouth -> Travers & Dennis
    F) Fulham -> Rodak & Gazzaniga
    G) Notts Forest -> Henderson & Hennessey
    H) Southampton -> McCarthy & Johnny Sins

    Think that’s all of them, unclear who is number 1 at Palace with Guaita & Johnstone there, so left them out.

    Thanks

      B, imo. Reliable defence and we’re certain that they’re 1 and 2. Bazunu looks like he’ll start at Southampton

      If Gazzaniga is first choice at Fulham he becomes an option for 4.0

          It is risky picking the wrong one though. I'll probably play it safe & get Raya/Sanchez (still not sure either) for the 1st 4 games then switch. Not ideal to plan a GK transfer but:
          1) need more info
          2) Palace GK look a substantially better bet than other 4.5s to me
          3) nice to get ARS/liv/mci out the way quickly & enjoy the smoother ride after

                  That's different. Ganazziga is my choice. If I was to double, it can’t be Brentford due to the new guy so it would be safety with Brighton.

                    I think Trossard is the only Brighton player I may want if I go double keepers for them, though yet to see this Undav admittedly

                      My main reason for Gaz is because I'm certain I won't want 3 from Fulham. But there's also a chance he gets games if Fulham start badly. Not that I'd want to use him from my bench.

                      Brighton may surprise you. They done me proud in my bench boost last season with returns from Sanchez, Duffy and Bissouma.

        Really not sold by Jesus.. reckon his price will drop like a stone if he doesn’t start with a bang. Kane’s relatively low ownership paired with opening fixtures look pretty tough to ignore.

            If he Jesus starts well it would be an easy switch from Kane after Spurs great opening fixtures.

            My worry would be that if Jesus starts badly then his price will tumble thanks to his high ownership.

      I think Spurs are stronger than Chelsea. Chelsea's defence has been decimated (Christensen gone, Rudiger gone, Thiago Silva old, Azpilicueta about to go). They have signed Koulibaly who is a downgrade on Rudiger. If you can't defend well then it causes trouble in attack too.

          Ah sorry, mine had last years ID on and was linked to someone elses

      My guess would be that with no games played in the 22/23 season the ID you're entering is showing a team from last season that had the same ID.

    I find it hard to look past this set up especially considering we can always use an early wildcard if it all goes wrong.
    Just too much potential value in a 5-4-1

    Raya
    TAA Cancelo James Chilwell Perišić
    Salah(c) Luis Díaz Mahrez Neto
    Haaland

    Balcombe Andreas Archer Plange

      It’s a very strong team in fact, but no Arsenal is a worry IMO. Saka or Jesus needed I think

        I would rather have City and Liverpool attackers over Arsenal. Come GW2 when City have BOU people are going to be panicing that they dont have enough City cover (IMO)

      As i said above I dont think going 4 or 5 at the back is viable option...with the 5 rule sub more attacking players will be subbed In making it difficult for defenders...

        Could affect all positions not just wingbacks. I think its worth the risk. Treat them like wingers and sure if they make 60 mins with a CS then its a bonus

      Or Colback, please don’t consider 3 x 4.5 mids…

          I’d strongly advise against it, everyone is touting the value in defense which they’re right….to a certain extent.
          Over the course of the season most of the differentials/early bandwagons and flexibility to hop on and off occurs in midfield. This happens every.single.year.
          But go with your gut.

            Attacking defenders seem to score higher than mid priced midfielders

      Harrison Reed. Very boring and defensive player, but will play when fit.

    Zaha with 14 goals last season at £7m and JWP, costing £6.5m and 10 goals plus 5 assists are both decent options in the midfield and the 100m budget.

      Barring Mateta last season, for some reason i skip past palace

      Agree. Someone mentioned Zaha wants to leave though. I like Olise at £5.5m too if he is not injured.

      150pts is a bit shite for 16 attacking returns. Trossard has fewer attacking returns, 12 I think, and just 9pts fewer.
      Imo the only real way to gain value for JWP is to have him for 38gwks and that's never going to happen. Sporadic mega hauls in a sea of 1 and 2 pointers just isn't appealing.

        At that price point if he manages another 10 goals largely from free kicks and 5 assists or better, that's pretty good going.

        That's almost 1 in 3 games.

        Fair point on his bps, why so low?

    I'm not convinced about Jesus, well most forwards in general. They just dont seem to be worth the investment over mid and defs. Just look over previous seasons points totals and its clear that the majority of forwards are scoring less than other positons. It wasnt always the case but its been like this for a good while now. Shame FPL havnt adjusted the prices of forwards to take account for this. Therefore I'm fine with 1 up front - premium captain option like Kane or Haaland. Convince me otherwise...

      With Jesus we have the first case of a nailed no.9 striker in the top 6 who is less than £9m. I'd be surprised if he doesn't get like 15+ g/a this season
