Liverpool, Leeds United and Crystal Palace were in pre-season friendly action in the last 24 hours and we’ve got all the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points covered.

There’s goal, assist and line-up information, too, while Premium Members of Fantasy Football Scout can view the pre-season minutes tracker at the bottom of this piece.

LIVERPOOL 5-0 RB LEIPZIG

  • Goals: Salah, Nunez x4
  • Assists: Firmino, Diaz, Alexander-Arnold, Elliott, Carvalho

Match highlights

Reports of Darwin Nunez‘s (£9.0m) ineptitude may have been greatly exaggerated – and now we have the opposite problem.

Such is the fickle world of Fantasy Football that yesterday’s donkey is today’s thoroughbred, with Darwin’s four-goal salvo against RB Leipzig seeing his FPL ownership steadily rise overnight.

“Too eager to impress but still early days” was our reasoned mitigation of his first two goalless pre-season run-outs, so there has to be just as much perspective-placing when things go right at the other end of the pitch.

Two of his strikes probably shouldn’t have happened: the first was a penalty that regular taker Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) stepped aside for, while the fourth owed much to some hideous handling from Leipzig goalkeeper Janis Blaswich.

“Mo gives Darwin the penalty and Darwin, Pandora’s box was open. That’s of course a perfect night for him.

“We always think that if you pay a lot of money then the players feel no pressure or whatever. They are all completely normal human beings and the first touch is not perfect then all of a sudden… This generation of players read social media, which is really not smart, but they do. All of a sudden you get in a rush and these kinds of things. That’s the best way obviously to stop all these discussions. He’s a different striker to what we have or what we had, but he’s a really good one.” – Jurgen Klopp

One positive view is that Darwin keeps finding himself in excellent goalscoring positions, whether the chances are spurned as they were against United and Palace or despatched in the manner they were against Leipzig. Getting lots and lots of opportunities is a good thing and, as we’ve seen with Salah over the years, you don’t have to be the most prolific of finishers to become a viable FPL option.

And the more options we Fantasy managers have, the less ‘template’ the game becomes – so let’s hope for the likes of Darwin, Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) to give us plenty of selection headaches in 2022/23.

Diogo Jota‘s (£9.0m) injury hands Darwin a chance to impress from the off in Gameweek 1 against a defensively suspect Fulham, although Klopp does still have Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) available through the middle. It was, indeed, the Brazilian who started Thursday’s match alongside Salah and Luis Diaz (£8.0m) in the front three, with all of Darwin’s good work coming as a second-half substitute.

It was a business as usual elsewhere, with Salah scoring, as he always does, and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) assisting, as he always does. The usual defence for a match in Europe was in place at kick-off, too, with Ibrahima Konate (£5.0m) preferred over Joel Matip (£6.0m). Konate was frequently wheeled out in the cups at home and abroad last season, with Matip regularly starting in the league, although the former was occasionally called upon domestically when Liverpool were up against pace.

Substitutes Harvey Elliott (£5.0m) and Fabio Carvalho (£5.5m) also impressed in the front three in Thursday’s rout, each assisting a Darwin goal; they very likely won’t be in the starting XI come Gameweek 1 but can maybe expect to see a bit more game-time than usual this season, with the allowance of five substitutes presenting them with more cameo opportunities and the occasional start.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Adrian (Davies 60′); Alexander-Arnold (Milner 60′), Konate (Matip 46′), Van Dijk (Gomez 60′), Robertson (Tsimikas 46′); Fabinho (Bajcetic 60′), Thiago (Jones 60′), Keita (Henderson 46′); Salah (Elliott 60′), Firmino (Nunez 46′), Diaz (Carvalho 60′)

LEEDS UNITED 1-1 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Rodrigo pen | Mateta
  • Assists: Summerville | Ayew

Rodrigo (£6.0m) was on target with a second-half penalty as Crystal Palace and Leeds United rounded off their tours Down Under.

A rusty-looking Patrick Bamford (£7.5m) and substitute Mateusz Klich (£5.0m), two takers of Leeds’ spot-kicks in the last couple of seasons, were both off the field at the time, however.

A bruising encounter in Perth saw the Whites lose two players to injury, with new signing Luis Sinisterra (£6.5m) and Adam Forshaw (£4.5m) both limping out of the action in the first half.

“Luis Sinisterra had a little hamstring injury. We’re hopeful it’s not too much or too long or too severe. Any time we have a hamstring injury, I’m totally dissatisfied because that’s reflective of everything we do with them physically. We’ll evaluate that and we hope it’s not so bad.

“And then Adam Forshaw had Mateta lean on him a little bit and tweaked his knee. We’re hopeful as well that one’s not so bad, but we’ll get more information on it in the next days.” – Jesse Marsch

Leeds already have four other players red-flagged for Gameweek 1, while Liam Cooper (£4.5m) hasn’t kicked a ball in pre-season because of an injury of his own.

Owners of Wolves assets will have watched today’s game with interest then, particularly those who are looking at Jonny (£4.5m). Leeds are down both of their usual left-back options for Gameweek 1, with the unconvincing Pascal Struijk (£4.5m) and midfielder Jack Harrison (£6.0m) each getting 45 minutes in that position here.

As for Palace, there are limited takeaways from their recent globetrotting as regulars such as Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), Marc Guehi (£4.5m), Eberechi Eze (£5.5m) and nearly all of their senior central midfield options were left at home.

Jean-Philippe Mateta (£5.5m) tapped into an empty net to hand the Eagles the draw here, with Jordan Ayew (£5.5m) providing the assist on the breakaway.

Leeds United XI: Meslier, Kristensen, Koch (Hjelde 45’), Llorente, Struijk (James 45’), Adams (Summerville 45’), Forshaw (Roca 33’ (Gyabi 61’)), Aaronson (Greenwood 45’), Harrison, Sinisterra (Rodrigo 14’ (Klich 61’)), Bamford (Gelhardt 45’).

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita, Clyne, Ward, Andersen, Mitchell, Milivojevic, Rak-Sakyi, Ozoh (Ebiowei 65’), Ayew (Street 84’), Mateta (Adaramola 84’), Edouard (Phillips 80’).

If you are gonna go cheap defence I think ít's better to ignore Trent and spread the money on the rest.
I like the midfield and the attack tho.

I'd argue that James is capable of scoring the same amount of points as Trent, for 1.5m less, if he stays fit...

Trent: 2+12 attacking returns in 2853 minutes
          James: 5 + 9 attacking returns in 1863 minutes

Don't know what you mean about the red cards, but he is pretty injury prone.

But taking a 6.0 and spreading the 1.5m would drastically improve your defence. Even just taking Robbo over TAA and doing Tomi/Dalot > Trippier/Cash/Zinchenko would help

      Like it! A few ideas...

Tomi has been injury prone - switch to Wolves 4.5 (Jonny or RAN?)
Dalot will not be popular on here but I like the punt.
Walker's not nailed with Cucu incoming. Switch to another 5.0 like Cash or Trips?

Mahrez - Not a big fan. Definitely a great player just not nailed or consistent. May be his breakout year though (we all hope). Great value! I'd look at Madds, Cout, Sancho...

      Good luck this season!

I'm not sure either, I wouldn't want him unless I was sure he was nailed on.
Prefer Kulusevski (providing Richarlison doesn't impact him too much) or Maddison.
Mahrez has by far the best PP90 but he's a risky pick..

Played 2400 mins and most for any Chelsea mid

He was benched 7 times, injured 4. One of the benchings was for UCL

Then of his 27 starts he was pulled 3 times before 70th minute, all in wins so probably keeping him uninjured.

I'm pretty settled on 3 at the back until we know/see more about CHE/MCI defences. KDB and Diaz are locks in my midfield. Kane/Son also takes a space. A 6.0 enabler MID/FWD is a lock. That leaves three spots for Maddison, Mount (or, less likely, Havertz), Jesus, & Saka.

What is your issue with Trippier? He looked great at Newcastle before the injury (2 goals in 6 games). Also you commented previously saving Pope has great clean-sheet potential so you must like Newcastle's defence.

I think you misread, i don't have an issue with Trippier, i think he's a great asset. I said if Trippier is the £5.0 defender with Haaland then it's the better option than A.

I'm flattered you remember my other comment about Pope, can't even remember if that was yesterday or the day before. And yes i do rate Newcastle's defence, i think Trippier has great assist potential and Pope has proven over the years at Burnley to be a great option.

            Oh yes sorry I misread.
The only bad thing about Newcastle GK/defence is playing City and Liverpool GWs 3+5. You can't double down on Pope + Trippier for that reason (likely one pointers).

Yeah considering the opening fixtures i'd prefer Pope over Trippier as Pope has save point potential in those fixtures. I wouldn't start Trippier in those fixtures so you'd maybe need a good rotation option to pair him with.

Which team? As you can See I'm all over the place! Team C to me feels best placed with flexibility, but team B has Salah KDB and Kane which is very tempting. Team A is probably more balanced across all the positions, but Aston Villa could be a bit of a trap lol.

    A:
    Allisson
    Tomiyasu-Robbo-Chillwell-Cash
    Saka-Martinelli-KDB-Mahrez
    Wilson-Kane

    Raya-Digne-Bailey-Greenwood

    B:
    Raya
    Tomiyasu-Robbo-Walker-Zinchenko
    Salah-Martinelli-KDB-Neto
    Wilson-Kane

    Sanchez-AitNouri-Bailey-Greenwood

    C:
    Allisson
    Tomiyasu-Walker-Zinchenko-Chilwell-Robbo
    Saka-KDB-Mahrez
    Kane-Wilson
    Raya-Neto-Fornals-Greenwood

          Too many uncertainties...

Raya - they signed a new keeper
Tomiyasu - hearing he had a minor injury
Walker - doesnt get any attacking returns
Zinchenko - bet he will do great at Arsenal but it's probably a wait and see for me
Martinelli - I also have him in my team at the moment but he is not nailed

thanks. the one aspect of A that scares me is making getting into the 8mil mid bracket a potential headache. that said, if rashford can get it done its a no brainer. B feels safer, but I really really want robbo going right off the bat. plus ramsdale and those fixtures over sanchez. I guess the remianing preseason games will make it clearer, but Im just glad Im finally settled into formations and simple options

plus i think the flexibility is key. I know the extra wilcard forma lets us bail out early, so why not go massive with no flexibility, but at the same time I think a little flex is good. 5 at the back too rigid for me. neco makes it easy to go 4 imho

I'm not sure, Liverpool and City are absolutely elite operators, you can catch them off guard in a one of game but over a season I think that's too much. In terms of winning the league, for both of them to fail would be a miracle.

        What you reckon?

        1. Paqueta Rice
          • 5 Years

I think they just have to keep getting the 3 points versus everyone else and if they can stop pool or City getting 3 points against them you never know. I still don’t think they’re capable of it yet though. Top 4 is looking pretty predictable however

Funny how Lloris recorded the most points he ever had in a FPL season with half a season with Conte. I think I might pick him up. Ederson/Allisson block spots. No one will need more than two Spurs players at a time.

He scored 55 points in first 5 GWs with Nuno

I went for three attackers in the last gameweek of the season and worked out fine.
Not interested in Lloris at 5.5 though.

Alisson in particular is incredible value.

        set and forget

Yes, there may well be a 4.5 that emerges, but predicting them looks a tough ask

    Alisson
    Robertson Jansson Dawson
    Son Maddison Harrison Aaronson Henderson
    Wilson Johnson

    Ederson Richarlison Johnson Patterson

    Thoughts?

Robertson, Son, Maddison and Wilson are the only players I like in this team.
Ederson and Richarlison on the bench? try again

You REALLY don’t need Allison and Ederson. One and a 4 mil keeper is enough. Don’t pick Henderson - he’s a CDM (bad in fpl bc they barely get any returns and semi-regularly get yellow cards) and it takes up a Liverpool slot.

Best defensive FPL asset from Arsenal?
    A Zinchenko
    B Gabriel
    C Tomiyasu?

and as an aside who will Zinchenko be competing with for a slot?

    1. InsertPunHere

      Tierney/Xhaka.

Zinchenko will probably compete with Tierney unless he's playing midfield.
at the moment I'd say B, but prefer fullbacks.

Who are your 4.5M + 5.0M defensive choices? Currently on Botman and Cash. Dont trust Tomyasu’s fitness unless we see something change.

    Who are the best options?

I like Cash. Wolves wingbacks are also good options at 4.5

      Jonny , zinchencko, Doherty

5.0: Trippier. Also like Cash. Maybe Konate, Cucurella, Zinchenko pending on transfers and how nailed they are.
4.5: Dalot(seems pretty nailed) or Malacia if he is first choice over Shaw

I liked Tomiyasu but with his injury i'd change to White.
Justin could be good if he does as well as he did before getting injured. LEI fixtures not too bad.
Wolves Ait-Nouri/Jonny could be decent for the first 6 games (excluding vs Spurs in GW3).

Not really looked at any 5.0m options as i don't have the cash unless i went... 5.0m + 4.0m

I'm confused between the two. What are your views on this

    A) zinchencko + 5.5 mid
    B) white/4.5 nufc defender + 6 mid
