Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

The three newest additions to the Premier League, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth, were all profiled in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off), so we begin our team-by-team guides with Aston Villa.

It was a season of steady progress at Villa Park in 2021/22, with Aston Villa’s 14th-place finish not terrible given the loss of talisman and captain Jack Grealish (£7.0m) shortly before the campaign commenced, plus the change in management midway through.

With Steven Gerrard taking the reins in Gameweek 12, all of the team statistics featured here are from that point onwards.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

Goals387th=
Shots3359th
Shots in the box21610th
Shots on target1238th
Big chances4213th=
xG36.5512th

From Steven Gerrard’s arrival in Gameweek 12 onwards, Aston Villa ranked seventh overall for goals scored, with 38 in 27 matches.

The all-important underlying attacking statistics, meanwhile, paint the picture of a mid-table Premier League side, which feels okay given that the most expensive FPL option for Villa costs £7.5m.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

Goals conceded348th
Clean sheets86th=
Shots conceded3175th=
Shots in the box conceded2046th=

On inspection, Villa’s defence actually performed very well under Gerrard, suggesting their backline can offer value when the fixtures fall kindly in 2022/23.

The recent additions of defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara (£5.0m) and centre-half Diego Carlos (£5.0m) could potentially tighten them up further, too.

Gerrard often turned to Douglas Luiz (£5.0m) in the number six role last season, also experimenting with Calum Chambers (£4.5m) and Tim Iroegbunam (£4.5m), but French international Kamara feels like a significant upgrade, which could have a positive impact on Villa’s clean sheet potential.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best mid-price FPL forwards for 2022/23 5

In an appealing opening run, Aston Villa kick start the new season away to newly-promoted Bournemouth, then face Everton and Crystal Palace.

Beyond that, things stiffen up considerably.

In fact, Gerrard’s troops meet four of last season’s top eight between Gameweeks 4 and 7, which includes clashes against West Ham United, Arsenal, champions Manchester City and Leicester City.

However, Gameweek 8 looks like the ideal time to ‘hop on’ their assets, with fixtures against Southampton, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Brentford either side of Chelsea in Gameweek 11.

FFS should really invest in some sort of macro or bot that posts the template team and then depending on the last friendly result, transfers in the scorers and posts that

He won't start but at 5m a direct goal scoring winger of his caliber is a good punt. Probably starts with 30 minutes a game and the chance to force himself into starting 11

There's 3 combinations which are impossible to choose between:
    A: Meslier/Martinelli
    B: Ramsdale/Neto
    C: Ederson/Bailey
Does anyone think there's a clear winner because it seems I'm doomed to get it wrong. Maybe Meslier and Bailey is the best way so I have 1.0M for future transfers.

Which combination do we think will get more points?

    N Williams + Haland (maybe 70 + 200 = 270)

    Maddison + Sancho (maybe 170 + 140 = 310)

I'm leaning towards a Maddison/Sancho combo but am worried about leaving Haland out of my team!

It's slightly confusing given positioning, isn't there a 3rd player in the combination question? If you're going to captain Haaland a few times in the 1st 6-10 games then A, if not then probably Maddison and Sancho.

I'd say it'll be fairly close between Aaronson and him for me before deadline the way it's going. Haven't really considered him like others have but he keeps popping up. Having a full week break between all games for a while for non-Europe teams will be a big help too. The fact he was subbed on at HT with only two other outfield players suggests it was more of a tactical change than just fitness too (the rest of the subs happened with about 30 mins left)

He’ll be a rotation risk long term, but given we’ll all wildcard early he’s very tempting…

    My draft is:
    Raya
    TAA James Cancelo Dalot
    Bowen Salah Bailey Sancho
    Jesus Kane

    Bench: Olsen, Pereira, N.Williams, Plange

What do you think ? I think about change Sancho to Rashford and upgrade Dalot to Trippier.

    Bailey the man?

Albeit it is Villa who do well against the bottom 12 normally.

Can struggle more against the stronger teams.

    Gerrard on Bailey

"He made more than an impact. He changed the game. He showed energy, speed & a hunger to cause problems.

He's come back in pre-season a different player. He is sending a massive signal to me that he wants to be in our 11".

My thinking right now is – where do I go in GW4 when his fixtures become offputting (West Ham, Arsenal, City)? There are not really other options at that price point in midfield, so it means two transfers for a 5.0m player who isn't nailed

…but he could be explosive those first three weeks

Bailey knee jerk – is Bailey + Neco better than Jonny + Colback?

    Sánchez
    Trent Robertson Cancelo James
    Salah Saka Neto Bailey
    Haaland Jesus
    Bench: Steele Williams Andreas Taylor

Darwin a good finisher? Or is he a donkey?

Darwin vs Diaz + £1m is a tough choice. If Darwin is playing as a proper striker and getting a lot of shots then, provided he isn't a donkey, he could get a lot of goals.

his youtube compilation is much better than someone like Werner's and Pepe's were, variation wise - headers, left foot, right foot, power, tap-ins - pretty sure he isn't a donkey (imo)

Good finisher? No, not from what I've seen. He has a good finish in him (2nd goal the other day and goal against Liverpool at Anfield come to mind) but generally I don't think he's a great shooter. But he'll get a lot of chances, has very good movement and positioning

To me, neither represent the opportunity that Jota at 7.5 was last year

It's not a like for like comparison, but Alisson, Robbo, VVD *guarantee* an extremely solid return year on year that looks too good to pass up for the early fix. Darwin or Diaz can always be hopped on if they emerge

Imo Robbo a better pick than these two.

He is an excellent finisher. Combine torres goalscoring and direct running with kuyt's workrate, andy carrolls touch and fpl virgins passing ability

    What would you change?

    Mendy
    TAA / Robertson / Cancelo / Chilwell
    Salah / Bowen / Mount / Coutinho / Martinelli
    Jesus

    (Hennessy / N. Williams / Taylor / Greenwood)

    I'm thinking:
    - Premiums are only value if captained (hence just Salah)
    - Rather have MIDs than FWDs as they get 1 pt more for a goal, and 1 pt for a CS
    - Bowen scored twice against City at home last season, overlooked at 9% TSB
    - If Chelsea play a back 4, Chilwell is the more likely to play higher as Tuchel likes James as a CB and will have Sterling cutting in from LW.

    Strong 11 but weak bench.

    Mendy
    Tomiyasu, Taa, Doherty, Trippier, Cash
    Martinelli , Son, Salah
    Haaland, Jesus

    Forster, Andreas, Murphy, Greenwood

    Any changes guys?
