We’re profiling all 20 Premier League clubs before Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway.

From our top picks from each team to a predicted line-up for the opening weekend, we’ll be covering each top-flight side in detail.

Everton are up next, with the focus here on the Frank Lampard era that started in Gameweek 24 of 2021/22.

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

It was a bit of a miserable picture from an attacking perspective after Lampard’s appointment, with only the three relegated clubs scoring at an inferior rate to the Toffees (1.06 per game).

They were bottom-five material for everything from shots to xG, too.

Using our Team Comparison tool to assess Everton before and after Lampard’s appointment, we can see that there was even a downward turn in the underlying numbers from Gameweek 24 onwards:

Above: Everton’s underlying attacking numbers from Gameweeks 1-23 (left) and Gameweeks 24-38 (right). Most figures given are per game.

Lampard could even call upon Richarlison (£8.5m) and an admittedly rusty-looking Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) for much of his tenure, with the former now packed off to Tottenham Hotspur.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

GAMEWEEK 24 ONWARDS
TotalRank v other Premier League clubs*
Goals conceded3116th
Clean sheets510th
Shots conceded25914th
Shots in the box conceded16713th
Shots on target conceded9718th
Big chances conceded4015th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)30.4814th

The clean sheet count was fairly healthy following Lampard’s appointment, with five shut-outs being banked in 18 matches.

The rest of the underlying defensive data was less impressive as Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) was kept busy, making more saves per 90 minutes (3.76) than all bar two other first-choice goalkeepers.

A comparison of the numbers pre and post-managerial change reveals something of a mixed bag, with big chance concession and xGC not really altering to a significant level:

Above: Everton’s underlying defensive numbers from Gameweeks 1-23 (left) and Gameweeks 24-38 (right). Most figures given are per game.

James Tarkowski (£4.5m) has been brought in over the summer to bolster the backline, with an improvement at defending free-kicks and corners surely a priority: only Leicester had a worse xGC from set plays last season, something that was the case both before and after Lampard’s appointment.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL midfielders for 2022/23 2

A motley collection of opening games sees Everton rank lower-mid-table for fixture difficulty in Gameweeks 1-8, which will be enough to deter many FPL managers from considering the Toffees as viable options.

The concern would be a continuation of their abysmal away form of last season, as most of their early ‘winnable’ matches come on the road.

European qualifiers Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham all visit Goodison Park between now and the international break. That trio of clubs plus Arsenal were among the division’s seven highest-scoring teams in 2021/22, so multiple clean sheet opportunities don’t leap off the page.

McNeil signing can prove to be a game changer tbh.

However, they need to sign 1-2 midfielders

They're looking at re-signing Gueye, who's unwanted at PSG. That could actually be quite useful.

Even his 1 attacking contribution last season didn't change the game. An assist to make it 3-0 in a game Burnley won 3-1.

Over his entire professional career he averages an attack return every 505 minutes.

He is 22 and played for Burnley

Context is important, he's a decent enough player and should form a good partnership with DCL

I do think Andreas and possibly Mitrovic can bag enough FPL points in a sinking side, but I wouldn't bother with any others from those 4 teams.

I dunno about that. They have a top data science team, I like the way they operate. Eriksen is a huge loss, but Ben Mee was a superb addition. I think they have enough to stay up.

If Lampard gets fired quite early I can see them hanging on.

The immediate dip in Everton's data when he joined was telling. As was Chelsea's enormous boost in data when he left them.

He is statistically not a Premier League level manager.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 14 Years

He's my punt for first firing, but I don't know how much that would improve Everton. They appear to be in a financial crisis, along with possibly Leicester and Wolves. They won't improve with no money.

Agreed, Lampard is not a good manager, especially defensively. He was very poor at Chelsea, and has somehow regressed at Everton

    Lloris
    TAA, Cancelo, Robertson, Kristensen, Trippier
    Diaz, Martinelli
    Kane(c), Haaland, Jesus
    (Klaesson, Bailey, Dasilva, Andreas)

Although I think Lloris is a terribly over-rated GK, looking at the fixtures Spurs possibly get the most clean-sheets in opening 6 (transfer out before City).

    1. Andy_Social
      • 14 Years

That's fair enough for a short-term plan. One I'm considering is playing the fixtures with Meslier GW1-2 then GW3 whoever has the Brentford gloves and reassess on a wildcard down the line.

      1. LangerznMash
        • 10 Years

Meslier actually looks a great option up to GW 7, then swapping Fulham GK from GW8 gives a nice run of fixtures.

You can infer from Pep's comment that Haaland may be rotated at the beginning. You also don't want two 4.5 midfielders this will make it hard to upgrade it isn't flexible

From reading Crystal Palace review I realised Arsenals fixture is not as good as I first though. Palace are actually quite solid atb…..I’m looking very short-term here, probably 5 games then WC. Still have Jesus, just think the double-up might be overkill. Thinking Rashford instead, so which is better:

    1) Saka & Dias
    2) Rashford & Cancelo & +0.5

I’m thinking any difference there, Cancelo should be able to eat up. Not sure what to do with the $0.5 but these would be the options.

    1) Forget Rashford, just get Grealish (for triple City)
    2) upgrade Meslier to a $5.0 GK

    Opinions appreciated

Looking purely at the first 3 weeks...

Popular opinion: Neto (decent fixtures - likely to be played as a striker in the short term also)

Rogue differential: McGinn (3 great fixtures - more advanced role/less defensive work to do thanks to the Kamara signing)

    Hi all, thoughts on this?

    Robbo, Maddison, Kulu, Martial (442)

    Or

VVD, Grealish, Son, fodder 4.5 (541/451 with neco and pereira rotating)

Salah will be perma captain for most GWs.

Thought of rotating Son and KDB for fixtures

I agree (I think!)….as long as grealish is enough for city attacking cover. I do feel that the 442 gives more exposure to wider points opportunities with those players too

I could swap Cancelo + Dasilva for Odegaard + 4.5, leaving 0.5 ITB for GW2-3.

      1. House Frey Wedding Planner

I wouldn't want to start Neto or Trippier for gw3 and I would prefer to have a 12th player that can rotate when needed.

Alternatively I can downgrade Zinc to one of the 4.5 Arsenal defenders to have 0.5 itb and still a solid 12th man to rotate

        1. Deulofail
          • 10 Years

Sounds like better value to me. You could also consider Neco, who has a decent GW3

      2. TanN
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 23 days ago

So this is a 5-3-2, right?

So a bench of Neto, Andreas and Greenwood. Total cost of 14.5.

Minimum it could be for those three positions is 13.5, but Andreas isn't a good bench option for GW1 and no other 4.5 mid is better.

        It's fine

        Ignore Deulofail

          • 10 Years

          1.0m for a GW1 bench option? I think I have a reasonable point then

          • 7 Years

          Cheers.

It can vary from 532 or 442 depending on the fixtures. I'll probably start the first 2 games with the Arsenal defender on the bench then play him and Andreas in gw3 in place of Neto and Trippier.

        This.

The longer the season goes on, the more players are going to be looked after and rested. A defence full of nailed centre halves, a midfield of Ward-Prowse's, and 3 Harry Kane's upfront... you're going to need that first sub more this season than every before.
And that's before we get into having the ability to rotate around tough fixtures...

        2. Deulofail
          • 10 Years

I think you need first sub even less at the start of this season:

          - 5 subs meaning more cameos, fewer blanks
          - early WC, which means we're not even talking about 'the longer the season goes on' at this point.

How often will you need your first sub in the first 4-8GWs?
Probably never. Maybe once. Then probably Neco is enough.

How often with you need more than one sub in a GW?
Probably never. Maybe once if you're very unlucky. I don't feel it's worth 1.0 to cover this scenario tbh.

If you find a great rotation you believe in, then fair enough, but ideally for me, that would be special 4.5 mids (0.0m spend) and 4.0-4.5 defs (0.0-0.5m spend). Anything more would need to be justified by needing the bench frequently, imo, which I think is unlikely. If you think it's likely, then sure it makes more sense.

I really would have hoped for a couple more games to gauge how their MF is going to be shaping up going into the season.
I have two drafts lined up - both dependent upon who we think will be starting.
I have a ‘Robbo + Foden’ draft and a ‘Reece James + Grealish’ draft.
