We’re profiling all 20 Premier League clubs before Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway.

From our top picks from each team to a predicted line-up for the opening weekend, we’ll be covering each top-flight side in detail.

Everton are up next, with the focus here on the Frank Lampard era that started in Gameweek 24 of 2021/22.

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

*Rankings are weighted per game due to the different number of matches that clubs played from Gameweek 24 onwards

It was a bit of a miserable picture from an attacking perspective after Lampard’s appointment, with only the three relegated clubs scoring at an inferior rate to the Toffees (1.06 per game).

They were bottom-five material for everything from shots to xG, too.

Using our Team Comparison tool to assess Everton before and after Lampard’s appointment, we can see that there was even a downward turn in the underlying numbers from Gameweek 24 onwards:

Above: Everton’s underlying attacking numbers from Gameweeks 1-23 (left) and Gameweeks 24-38 (right). Most figures given are per game.

Lampard could even call upon Richarlison (£8.5m) and an admittedly rusty-looking Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) for much of his tenure, with the former now packed off to Tottenham Hotspur.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

GAMEWEEK 24 ONWARDS
TotalRank v other Premier League clubs*
Goals conceded3116th
Clean sheets510th
Shots conceded25914th
Shots in the box conceded16713th
Shots on target conceded9718th
Big chances conceded4015th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)30.4814th

*Rankings are weighted per game due to the different number of matches that clubs played from Gameweek 24 onwards

The clean sheet count was fairly healthy following Lampard’s appointment, with five shut-outs being banked in 18 matches.

The rest of the underlying defensive data was less impressive as Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) was kept busy, making more saves per 90 minutes (3.76) than all bar two other first-choice goalkeepers.

A comparison of the numbers pre and post-managerial change reveals something of a mixed bag, with big chance concession and xGC not really altering to a significant level:

Above: Everton’s underlying defensive numbers from Gameweeks 1-23 (left) and Gameweeks 24-38 (right). Most figures given are per game.

James Tarkowski (£4.5m) has been brought in over the summer to bolster the backline, with an improvement at defending free-kicks and corners surely a priority: only Leicester had a worse xGC from set plays last season, something that was the case both before and after Lampard’s appointment.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL midfielders for 2022/23 2

A motley collection of opening games sees Everton rank lower-mid-table for fixture difficulty in Gameweeks 1-8, which will be enough to deter many FPL managers from considering the Toffees as viable options.

The concern would be a continuation of their abysmal away form of last season, as most of their early ‘winnable’ matches come on the road.

European qualifiers Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham all visit Goodison Park between now and the international break. That trio of clubs plus Arsenal were among the division’s seven highest-scoring teams in 2021/22, so multiple clean sheet opportunities don’t leap off the page.

Is Saka worth the extra 2.0m over Martinelli? Is he still on penalties?
As I already have TTA I am currently on Cancelo to get some City cover. But based on his xA of last year he very much overperformed, which was likely a result of KDB shooting, should we be expecting lessor returns and by how much? Is Robertson a better shout at the same price point or is Dias a better option at the 1.0 m less?

I am currently focused on nailed players:
    4.5 4.0
    James TTA Cancelo Neco Tomiyasu
    Salah Mount Saka Bailey Andreas
    Kane Jesus Archer

Got attacking cover from Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal but lacking City.
My watchlist (not selected due to concerns of playing time): Haaland, Foden, Grealish
Options not selected (couldn't fit): Luis Diaz, Martinelli

Doing a BB1WC2 team means picking no Arsenal. Having no one playing in the Friday night opening game of the season will be torturous!

If you are BB1WC2 then you purely attack best fixtures for GW1. Away to Palace is not an ideal fixture. I'm going for 15 nailed on players from the following 7 teams:
        NEWCASTLE v Forest
        SPURS v Southampton
        Fulham v LIVERPOOL
        Bournemouth v VILLA
        LEEDS v Wolves
        LEICESTER v Brentford
        MAN UTD v Brighton

Not difficult to pick 15 players that will play wk 1

At the moment I'm starting with Kane, Son & Salah and all being well I'm taking a -4 in GW2 to swap the first two for Haaland & KDB. Come GW3 I'll see how the land lies and take it from there. Those are probably the five players who are most likely to haul in the opening couple of GWs and not having them in your team when one of them goes nuclear could be a rank destroyer.

There's nothing more disheartening than a poor start after weeks of tinkering so hopefully this opening gambit provides a good shield against that happening.

Big risk thinking you'll hit the right weeks.

Personally I'm quite stubborn about rolling GW1 & would like to retain one of Son/Kane throughout the opening fixtures, but I respect a good aggressive initiative & it could certainly strike gold v BOU

Planning a -4 hit for GW2 is crazy in my opinion. You usually plan to avoid points hits.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 14 Years
        4 years, 23 days ago

I don't think a -4 for a player you'll captain in an easy fixture is particularly controversial, but I do fear there are questionable assumptions underlying the plan. I myself am starting with Kane and 0.5 itb to give myself the option of making a late change to Haaland, but it's an open question whether I do it.

As Pep eases Haaland in, there's a real prospect he doesn't start v Bournemouth. In the meantime with Chelsea in disarray, Harry could fill his boots in GW2. So I'll very much be seeing how things go, both tomorrow and next weekend, and not making any move until near to deadline GW2.

        1. LangerznMash
          • 10 Years

He can only captain one of KdB or Haaland though. It would be much safer to just transfer one in for no points hit. Furthermore, if anything happens to one of his other starting players then this becomes a -8 or -12 hit.

Does he say why Saka over Jesus? I feel like that would be a significant improvement, and brings Andreas into the fold as well

Don't think so but yeah that is an odd decision on his part. If you trust the Arsenal attack to the point of having Martinelli and Saka why forsake Jesus. I guess it's just the theory that the points aren't in the strikers.

i havent listened to the whole pod but he was mentioning price points of being able to move to other midfieders, as beneficial. He seems high on midfielders and their tendency to increase fast in price at the start of the season

    Mendy
    TAA, VVD, Cancelo, Zinchenko

    Ward | Neco, Andreas, Plange

Thanks for the input, agree double city will be good at the back it’s just weighing that up against no city attackers

      A) exactly my team atm

      Reason
we know liverpool will have CS for the next 8 weeks. It's safer to have Robertson than Diaz and he also strikes a lot.

I'm not too worried about GK tbh. But if I had to choose, I would prefer Ramsdale to Ederson.

Mahrez vs James. I'm more worried about City attacker rather than Chelsea's defense

I don't like double Chelsea def due to their pre-season, Maybe Ramsdale over Mendy. Rest is solid, would get Williams over Vester though for bench, more guaranteed gametime I suspect.

Premium players 10m+ only Salah and Haaland don’t go to World Cup. They practically have 6 weeks recovering, training and conditioning sessions and of course resting before season start again at Boxing Day.

All other premiums know they are going to World Cup, do you think this might have any effect even before World Cup?

    1. Deulofail
      • 10 Years
      4 years, 23 days ago

You can argue it any way I think

WC players could up their game to get in form for WC
WC players could take it easier to avoid injuries for WC
non-WC players could up their game to prove themselves while attention will go to WC players instead during WC
non-WC players might get more minutes as managers are worried about WC players taking it easy
WC players get more minutes as managers expect them to up their game
WC players get fewer minutes as managers have unofficial agreements with international managers
WC players play less because managers want to make better use of them while they are fit and in form, rather than after the WC when they might be exhausted or distracted
      Etc etc

    Sanchez
    TAA Trippier Zinchenko Cancelo
    Rashford JWP Diaz
    Jesus Kane Haaland

Steele / Neto, L. Martinez, Bailey

Any thoughts? Feels v heavy in defence and light in midfield but I have often come unstuck for not investing enough in defence in previous seasons

I'm a bit surprised how many people are willing to go with two non-playing 4.5fwds. E.g. Saka might be slightly better than Jesus, but Jesus + Andreas > Saka + non-playing fwd IMO

    1. Bartowski
      • 15 Years

Ture. Plus it leaves you hard pressed to manoeuvre to a cheap or mid priced striker if one takes off a la Bamford.

    2. House Frey Wedding Planner
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 23 days ago

Agree with this. It's a waste of 2 bench spots as there aren't any 4.5 playing forwards whereas you can find some playing 4.5 mids

      • 10 Years

If Andreas is going to be on your bench every week, I think it's more important who you think will get more points in the XI. But for me, that's Jesus anyway.

            Why?

Cancelo, Mahrez, KDB, Haaland are likely to get minutes every week with 5 subs. On the rare and unpredictable occasion one of them doesn't, you have subs that are 0.0-0.5 to cover. Neco, Andreas, plenty of 4.5 defs

3 goals and 1 assist in pre-season, likely to start.

5 goals and 6 assists in 29 starts in the season before last as he was injured most of 21/22.

No other player at 5.5 registered that many last season although a lot of them had less minutes.

Wissa in my opinion will do better if he nails a starting spot.
