We’re profiling all 20 Premier League clubs before Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway.

From our top picks from each team to a predicted line-up for the opening weekend, we’ll be covering each top-flight side in detail.

Everton are up next, with the focus here on the Frank Lampard era that started in Gameweek 24 of 2021/22.

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

It was a bit of a miserable picture from an attacking perspective after Lampard’s appointment, with only the three relegated clubs scoring at an inferior rate to the Toffees (1.06 per game).

They were bottom-five material for everything from shots to xG, too.

Using our Team Comparison tool to assess Everton before and after Lampard’s appointment, we can see that there was even a downward turn in the underlying numbers from Gameweek 24 onwards:

Above: Everton’s underlying attacking numbers from Gameweeks 1-23 (left) and Gameweeks 24-38 (right). Most figures given are per game.

Lampard could even call upon Richarlison (£8.5m) and an admittedly rusty-looking Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) for much of his tenure, with the former now packed off to Tottenham Hotspur.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

GAMEWEEK 24 ONWARDS
TotalRank v other Premier League clubs*
Goals conceded3116th
Clean sheets510th
Shots conceded25914th
Shots in the box conceded16713th
Shots on target conceded9718th
Big chances conceded4015th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)30.4814th

*Rankings are weighted per game due to the different number of matches that clubs played from Gameweek 24 onwards

The clean sheet count was fairly healthy following Lampard’s appointment, with five shut-outs being banked in 18 matches.

The rest of the underlying defensive data was less impressive as Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) was kept busy, making more saves per 90 minutes (3.76) than all bar two other first-choice goalkeepers.

A comparison of the numbers pre and post-managerial change reveals something of a mixed bag, with big chance concession and xGC not really altering to a significant level:

Above: Everton’s underlying defensive numbers from Gameweeks 1-23 (left) and Gameweeks 24-38 (right). Most figures given are per game.

James Tarkowski (£4.5m) has been brought in over the summer to bolster the backline, with an improvement at defending free-kicks and corners surely a priority: only Leicester had a worse xGC from set plays last season, something that was the case both before and after Lampard’s appointment.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL midfielders for 2022/23 2

A motley collection of opening games sees Everton rank lower-mid-table for fixture difficulty in Gameweeks 1-8, which will be enough to deter many FPL managers from considering the Toffees as viable options.

The concern would be a continuation of their abysmal away form of last season, as most of their early ‘winnable’ matches come on the road.

European qualifiers Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham all visit Goodison Park between now and the international break. That trio of clubs plus Arsenal were among the division’s seven highest-scoring teams in 2021/22, so multiple clean sheet opportunities don’t leap off the page.

A'noon all. Any thoughts on this?

    Meslier (4.0)
    TTA - Cancelo - Dalot - White
    Salah - Son - Neto - Bailey
    Haaland - Jesus

    Subs - Taylor, Andreas, Neco

I know midfield is a bit lop-sided but it covers off the cap picks for first 7 weeks at least, e.g.

    GW1 - Son
    GW2 - Haaland
    GW3 - Son
    GW4 - Jesus
    GW5 - Haaland
    GW6 - Son
    GW7 - Salah

    Ta!

It's a nice team. I'd put in Sess for White if he looks like starting against Soton.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on that. White is nailed but bit boring and not great for anything bar cs's.

Mid and Def shows the unevenness of a threemium - if you aren't captaining Salah, why not go Diaz and upgrade the weak bits?

Yeah, Ali peaks at 170. He could very easily have a sub 150 year. He has done 2 out of the last 3 seasons.

Diaz is a bold one, I agree. I think he's capable of 200 points, but that's very specualtive.

What are peoples thoughts on having defenders who play promoted sides in the opening fixtures. On paper they might be easier but these teams will have momentum and optimism especially in their home fixtures. Plus these teams will push for a goal more in their early games than they would later in the season.

Well, as for playing defenders up against promoted teams on opening day of the season, it’s a lottery.

Sometimes promoted teams can shock you, like Brentford did to Arsenal last season. But more often than not they struggle at first.

You would fully expect Liverpool to spank a Fulham side that look ripe for the picking at this early stage.

Bournemouth look to be arguably the weakest of the promoted sides, but they play a home game against a Villa side that could be either great or awful.

I expect Newcastle v Forest to be a tight game, probably a 1-0 Toon win, so make of that all what you will!

I'm pondering not having him. Over the first 5 games the only ones i'd be scared not to have him are Fulham and Bournemouth. Against United don't know how he'll do and Newcastle and Palace could be tough games as they'll play 5 atb.

I love Salah, but I am pretty comfortable with him out of my team for now. Like you say, he's crazy expensive to have and not captain.

I figure 3 other Liverpool players should help to soften the blow when he hauls and Spurs / Man City rotate very nicely at the start.

In the first 7 GW's I think Salah narrowly has the captaincy edge over City assets (GW 1,4, 6 & 7) whereas against Spurs assets would only be viable on 2 occasions (GW 3 & 6).

That's why I think it makes most sense to pair a Liverpool & City premium - most likely Salah & Haaland - however the issue in my mind is around Haalands fitness, how he finds his feet in the first few weeks and whether pep roulette becomes a feature. Salah as we know is pretty much bullet proof - going without him just looks like trying to be different for the sake of it.

I'd say 2 - 0, Vardy got publicly humilated when found out & then lost in court!

Back on my fourmium nonsense. Managed to fit Trent in as well. Is that fivemium? Pentamium? Quinternium? Pimpmium (shout out to the sheep farmers of Borrowdale and up the Danelaw)

The way I see it, one of the big lads is going to get a flyer, and Chelsea are playing Everton week one so that’s like a free hit. This way I can downgrade to bandwagon, and my enablers are from the same pool as everyone else’s (current picks in parentheses, but could easily change).

    (Sanchez - Steele)
    Trent - (Trippier) - (Jonny) - (Saliba) - Neco
    Salah - Sterling - (Bailey) - (Martinelli) - (Andreas)
    Håland - Kane - (a 4.5 of some description)

    Phew.

Yeah, I mean you can do it, sure.

But is it a good idea?

Surely something like Mount + Maddison outscores Sterling + Martinelli

      1. Sameobi
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 23 days ago

If I pick Maddison and Mount they’ll get four points between them and the other 8.0 tempters will all score triple hat tricks, though

The more serious answer to that is that as I was setting the team up it wasn’t a comparison between Sterling + 6.0 vs 2 x 8.0; it’s Trent + Sterling vs De Bruyne + 5.5/5.0 and change

More or less down to choosing def and mid for total 13.0:

    A) 5.0 def and Diaz

    B) Robo and 6.0 mid

Grealish, Rashford, Darwin. Lot of uncertainty for a relatably high price. I prefer premium defs instead and pick risky mids for a lower price (Neto, Bailey etc.)

        Alisson
        TAA Zinchenko Trippier Dalot

        Bruno can be marti,rashford….

This is not a RMT. Don't even care if 3/4 mids blank every week with defence being a points machine. 8)

    Ederson (4.0)
    TAA Robbo Cancelo Trippier (Neco)
    Salah Sancho Martinelli Bailey (Andreas)
    Kane Jesus (Greenwood)

    GL for the season everyone!

Thinking about taking the year off, still a bit exhausted from last season. Has anyone done this and been able to delete their team without deleting the whole account? Looks like I might lose all history given the option available.

I'm playing this year after missing the last 3 or 4 as life got in the way then didn't fancy playing the last 2 due to the season disruptions. If you need to take a break then take a break but don't know about the deleting account stuff. I'm using a new account as i don't use the email for my old fpl account anymore and can't even remember the password anyway.

Thanks, yeah I think I should've just not set up the team in the first place as then it would've just kept my account but not had a team. Maybe I'll do it but take it less seriously or something meh
