Scout Picks - Bus Team

We’ve put together our Scout Picks ‘bus team’ ahead of Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

For those who haven’t seen this article series before, it’s essentially a rough, first draft of our regular picks, which get finalised and published much closer to the deadline.

We are limited to a £83.0m budget for our starting XI, although the bench options – currently – aren’t just unplayable fodder as you might have in your own squads.

We are actually running a poll below on whether they should count as part of a wider £100m overall budget or whether you prefer them to stay as they are, offering cheap, more playable alternatives to the first XI but not price-capped.

The final picks will stay as they are and cement our weekly selection based on the Scout Squad long-list entries and fresh injury updates but this ‘bus team’ article – a term coined by the Always Cheating boys â€“ will discuss the players who are likely to be in the running.

Here it is, then: our early thoughts on the runners and riders up for selection in Gameweek 1, followed by the preliminary picks themselves.

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

THE LIKELY LADS

learning-from-the-great-and-the-good-21-22-closing-time 1

There weren’t many weeks when Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) didn’t feature in the Scout Picks last season, and the Liverpool duo are very likely to be included again in Gameweek 1 of the new campaign.

Alexander-Arnold, of course, was the top-scoring FPL defender in 2021/22, averaging one return (be it a goal, assist or clean sheet) per game. Given his points potential at both ends of the pitch, the right-back still feels under-priced, even at £7.5m.

As for Salah, we hardly need any encouragement, but it’s worth noting that he is traditionally a very fast starter. In fact, the Egyptian has managed to score on the opening day of each campaign since signing for the Reds back in 2017.

SALAH’S OPENING DAY RECORD
SeasonGameweek 1 opponentGoalsAssistsBonusFPL points
2021/22Norwich City (a)12317
2020/21Leeds United (h)30320
2019/20Norwich City (h)11212
2018/19West Ham United (h)1008
2017/18Watford (a)11111

Tottenham Hotspur attacking representation, be it through Harry Kane (£11.5m) or Son Heung-min (£12.0m), also looks on the cards for the Scout Picks, with Southampton up first for the Lilywhites on Saturday.

The Spurs pair were in electric form following Antonio Conte’s arrival last season, racking up a combined 44 attacking returns in 2022 alone.

More goals have been scored by Kane and Son in pre-season, resuming one of the most devastating partnerships in the Premier League, and one of them will almost certainly be on Scout Picks duty in Gameweek 1.

Hopefully just making the final tweaks to my team now. Is there any real difference between these pairings?

    a) Ramsdale - Trippier
    b) Pope - Zinchenko

      Nope.

Trippier has set pieces so I'd go A, unless Zinch gets moved to midfield.

Has to be A surely. Trippier excites me whereas Zinchenko doesn't. Trippier has goals and assists in him

              it wont

For the past 5 years its only being going bigger since world class options have emerged at the top clubs

Before was only TAA and Robertson

Last year James / Chilwell and Cancelo became locks

Now adding the potential for Perisic etc

means big at the back isnt even that 'big' , they will all destroy every option in the game below 8mil.

Gotta disagree based on City's new style of play Cancelo won't be getting the same number of assists/goals this year. Chelsea defence looking average and Chilwell isn't fit yet and James could start at CB. Chelsea being linked with Dumfries and Cucurella to add rotation into the mix. It's gonna be TAA,Robertson, Perisic this year worth going for.

I'd still say Cancelo is the best all round City option.
                  Robbo/Taa look immense.
Agree re Chelsea defence but you could say the same about Perisic plus he is a lot older.

Perisic is cheaper and just is a much better finisher than all the other defenders though. Mostly because he was a winger. He was in that box and shooting so much against Roma and he's not even fully fit yet.

Obviously they'll still be good picks but not the game breaking picks of last year.

I think Cancelo will easily get more points this year than last

                    1. He massively under-achieved his underlying stats

                    2. Haaland is way more clinical finisher

                    3. If they get a lb then Cancelo at rb will mean alot of overlaps of Cancelo with cutbacks to the 6 year box

I reckon Cancelo will be comfortable 10-20 points above last years score, maybe more.

                    1. Zimo

                      4 years, 2 days ago

He underachieved his expected goals though not assists. And 4 of those 11 assists he got were fantasy assists after his shots. If he's not gonna get into the centre for those goalscoring positions he's already lost out. His expected assists was only 6 last year. And if City are gonna be playing this new way it means Walker is a good pick again as both fullbacks will be overlapping and giving those cutbacks. I just don't see the merit of going Cancelo over Walker, Trent, Robertson, or Perisic at this stage of time. I'll get him in GW6-7 when I first Wildcard if he does look the same threat and three premiums isn't working.

      Way too weak

      1. lugs
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 2 days ago

no its not, Liverpool, Newcastle, Arsenal & Wolves is decent, subtract their scores from a comparable premium defense team after say 6 weeks and there won't be a massive points difference especially with Trippier and Nouri capable of attacking returns too

        1. FPL_trail_runner
          • 5 Years
          4 years, 2 days ago

Trippier and Nouri have very poor underlying stats

Its not just that the top 4 have very good defences , its that they have super elite creative players as fullbacks who put up better attacking stats than the amjority of the leagues creative wide players

And Arsenal defence is still not at that level - they didnt keep a clean sheet in the last 8 or so games at the end of the year ( even without Europe).

          1. lugs
            • 9 Years
            4 years, 2 days ago

well the Arsenal defense looks much stronger this year thanks to Saliba, and there is a 3m difference between Nouri and Trent so he shouldn't be anywhere near him stats or points wise, the point of the above team is to utilize that money higher up the pitch to make up the points shortfall, when you bring captaincy in to the equation for the attacking premiums then that shortfall can be easily surpassed, its just a different strategy that's all

    5. RogDog_jimmy
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 2 days ago

with that cheap defense I'd try get in more reliable than Saliba and Ai-Nouri.

There's definitely a world in which they don't start.

Dunk should be a great 4.5 - and then keep only onw of the potential rotation dudes.

For saving so much money in defense I'd want better than Neto and Bailey - but I guess it all makes sense.

Silly to go for robbo over TAA?

    A) Robbo and Bailey( 1st bench option)

Not the best way to think of the option.

Im on Robbo but down the line e.g Week 4
a Doherty (if nailed) + Darwin could easily outscore Robertson + 7mil forward / mid etc

Its about trying to target the fixtures where Darwin may explode and also Robbo will rotate a bit with Tsmikas at times ( again i have Robbo)

Nearly 5m players and 70% own Jesus. That amazes me tbh. I might be out the loop but I can only imagine that’s due to the amount of content available these days and probably almost all those creators have him in the team. Perhaps it’s time to put rank out of your mind and just concentrate on mini leagues. The days of a top 10k finish as something to aim for are probably over.

I’ve always thought a good O/R leads to good mini lge performance tbh……interestingly I’m not in any mini lge’s with mates as I find it just becomes too much. A top 10 k finish will always be the goal for me and managing that goal with the different fpl landscape of recent years makes that achievement so much more worthy.

I still believe if you truly pick who you think will score the most points and ignore ownership, that there is still room to be different. That said, I will never understand how it can be fun for people to just copy teams and/or pick players for the sole reason that a content creator recommended them

DDG is a brave (and slightly pricy) call, some would say that money could be spent on trying to upgrade your subs. Not a fan personally of Saka+Jesus but if you like Arsenal then feel free.

DDG is 5m, I think that’s low as it gets really.

Saka + Jesus, just have a feeling both will have a great start

You're right, assumed he would be £5m. Go for it if you're confident but Palace will not be a walkover.

I’d agree with you normally. I just have a gut feeling arsenal will have easy 1-3 win away at Palace with Jesus and Saka goals/assists.

Has a cagey 1-1 for me written all over it ( and I have Jesus and Martinelli)

Palace have very decent team with very good solid cb spine with Anderson and Guehi.

Cant think of any game they let 3 at home in.

Remember they kept a couple of the top 5 scoreless at home last year.

Perfect game for Zaha on the break and Arsenal dominating possession but not getting a tonne of chances.

Martinelli looks better value than Saka especially with Jesus up top and it being Arsenal away to Palace

I reckon Saka will be better asset than last year this season. Just have a gut feeling on great start too

Agree, love Saka but Marti at 2m less is too good to turn down, him plus the upgrade elsewhere should outscore Saka etc

I think Saka is far better pick than Martinelli. He is on penos too. Martinelli will also be rotated with ESR too. Saka has less rotation threat

Not confirmed that he is on penalties yet. I prefer Saka to Martinelli myself but can’t free those 2m I’m funds without downgrading Robbo or Haaland…

Saka on pens when he wins them, seems to be the same for Marti. There will be more rotation for Salah too with Nketia firing

Saka is easily the best 8mil option for me until week 8

Much better than Martinelli and Martinelli is also a great pick

Its very viable to think to Start with a rotating 8mil mid ( mount week 1 and Foden week 2)

and then get saka week3 to go with Jesus and Martinelli

been focussed on non-salah team for a while but know huge risk but have great cover with Son and three liverpool:

    Ederson (Ortega)
Trippier, Cancelo, Robbo, TAA (N Williams)
    Neto, Martinelli, Diaz, Son (Andreas)
    Kane, Jesus (Greenwood)

Yes, picking Ortega limits my ability to switch if Haaland is on fire but any 4.0 would cover that off before start. Could downgrade Ederson to Sanchez and bring in James but just not sure on Chelsea yet

If you are certain that Diaz will get close to Salah (even with pens) then it's a good pick. Ederson and Cancelo might be a bit much imo but it's not necessarily a bad shout.

I believe i have a decent flexible option for potential transfers until week 3 and a draft that offers excellent options which i dont see others mentioning yet

Possible to move around 8mil mids to target High scoring potential fixtures early days as some teams are just not ready yet for the season

    Current

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Robertson Perisic
    Mount* Martin Salah Bailey
    Haaland Jesus
    4.5 Neco Andreas Archer

Week 1* I see Mount as the best 8mil asset for week 1 that can be easily moved on week 2. I see Chelsea scoring 2+ and conceding at Everton So he could easily chip in with 10+ points and is an easy sell week 2 on FT. Diaz is also decent but i would like 3 Liverpool going forward and wouldnt move DIAZ out for week 2

*Week 2 : Mount to Foden to triple on City is warranted as Bou are very short on players and i can easily see this being 6-0 type game. The likes of Bou and FUL look very short in pre season based on lack of transfers so i think the triple up is warranted

Week 3 : Here is where i like the flexiblity this strategy offers
Either Foden to Say a Saka To target again Bou FUL in weeks 3-4

    or

Can see how spurs are doing to go Haaland to Kane (C) with Foden offering exactly value as a city attacker. Depending on if a Spurs attacker as captain is needed week 3

Given the excellent top 5 fixtures i see value in this above idea than in a set draft e.g 5 at the back where its going to be more difficult to get cash by selling e.g a James etc in the early weeks.

Anyone looking at this short term option?

      That's literally the template draft.

Im talking strategy of rotating a 8mil midfieler not the draft

Mount is not selected in a lot of teams

Foden is almost in none - or is the idea of double city attack in week 2 seen alot

        1. Zimo

It is smart. I think most people should go for it if they have a 8m slot but no one is talking about it yet. Fpl Wire talked about it in their recent podcast of going to Foden in GW2 to capitalize on the good fixture. I guess it's not template yet. My bad. Good strategy.

I would be on this squad if not for the 4.5 keeper. We all remember how Ramsdale was getting double digit hauls for fun and the Arsenal side has improved a lot and has great fixtures and look sharp. I've gone for Ramsdale Neto Walker Kane over Sanchez Cancelo Robertson Mount.

I see where you are coming from

My reason not going Ramsdale is i think the triple up in attack is a viable option i want to keep open to me from week 3-5

Saka in For Foden week 3 to go with Martinelli and Jesus

Who is Martin? Oodegard? Defence looks overloaded compared to mid, subs are poor and Haaland is very fresh right now. Pretty standard team otherwise.

        Martinelli

Ha, i had more funds in defence , James was there instead of Neco

Its not the draft i care about - its the short term strategy to move around the 8mil midfield to get this
