Every Gameweek here at Fantasy Football Scout, we bring you analysis of the teams and chip analysis of the leading Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers via the excellent LiveFPL website.

Usually we concentrate on the top 10,000 but we’re in the very early stages of the campaign and the front-runners are still jostling for position.

So instead, we’ll take a quick look at how the all-time elite FPL bosses have set up for Gameweek 1.

INTRODUCING THE ‘LEGENDARY MANAGERS’

Much like our very own Hall of Fame, the LiveFPL site features its own list of the leading 1,000 FPL managers of all time.

You can see the top 10 above, with a very familar name at the top of the pile.

Other notable names you may recognise further down the list include Finn Sollie (2nd), John Canning (43rd), Pranil ‘Lateriser’ Sheth (52nd), Mark Sutherns (88th) and one of our new recruits for the 2022/23 season, Obay Eid (125th).

OWNERSHIP

There’s a very definite template that has formed at this early stage of the season.

A total of 13 players are owned by more than 60% of these featured managers, with bench fodder Neco Williams (£4.0m), Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) and Cameron Archer (£4.5m) also able to boast such popularity and only not featuring on the above list because of their low ‘effective ownerships’.

There is a bit more of a divide with the second goalkeeper slot, with some managers installing Danny Ward (£4.0m) as their number one and having the 31%-owned Daniel Iversen (£4.0m) as back-up. Others will be using Ward as more of a bench-warmer or as part of a budget rotation, with Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) a part of 32.3% of squads and Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) in 22.9% of them.

It’s effectively the 15th and final spot that is most keenly contested, with Pedro Neto (£5.5m) the next most-owned on 44.6%.

Around two-thirds of managers had an £8.0m midfielder in place, perhaps with a view to swapping the candidates around when favourable fixture runs come and go. Luis Diaz (£8.0m) was the most owned of these players but still in only 23.6% of teams.

CAPTAINCY

This one is nice and easy: the vast majority of our featured FPL bosses handed the armband to Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) for his double-digit haul against Fulham on Saturday lunchtime.

FABIO BORGES’ TEAM

The man, the myth, the legend.

Top of not just the LiveFPL ‘legendary managers’ but also our very own Hall of Fame, Fabio Borges has registered seven successive finishes in the top 5k.

He started Gameweek 1 with a biggish at the back 5-3-2, with Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) joining four £6.0m+ defenders. Fabio did, however, favour the Ward/Iversen double-up.

There are no surprises elsewhere, with the inclusion of Gabriel over Williams meaning that two £4.5m midfielders warm his bench and there is place for a Neto or a Leon Bailey (£5.0m).

BENCH BOOST IN GAMEWEEK 1?

How the all-time best FPL managers set up for Gameweek 1 1

Six of the elite 1,000 played their Bench Boost chips in Gameweek 1, a tactic we’ve seen increasingly used in recent years as it eliminates the necessity to plan for/worry about it later in the season.

The best of the half-dozen to use it scored 17 points, a more than respectable score, but two of the six burned it on a bench full of fodder and a non-playing goalkeeper. The other boosted benches scored 8, 11 and 13.

I find it frustrating how owning Salah & Haaland can still offer a decent team, especially in defence.
FPL will become stale if these two players haul often.
They should've priced the defenders higher and forwards lower

Me and Mark said that from the start and we're being proved correct

I'm still going against it and perma-captain Salah. Got Jesus, Wilson (soon Toney), Bamford as forwards

I take it you don't own both. So it's sour grapes. We all had the same pool to choose from. Own your poor decisions.

Yes we should own our decisions but it is pure hindsight to claim having Harry Kane at home to Southampton was a poor decision.

No no, I'm not saying that was the poor decision. I'm saying going with one (or three) premium(s) is a known risk when 2 has always been the recognised optimal number. Well done if it comes off, but don't blame the system if it doesn't.

          1. adstomko
            • 10 Years

I'm not saying having two premiums is a system fault, but I'm saying under/overpricing DEFs & FWDs respectively kills the game.
You could've got 60pts just from owning Salah (C), Haaland & the remaining 9 players averaging 3.5pts (I think) per player. A bit meh

Don't have him and wouldn't do it myself, but it was always understood Kulu had one free game and then his minutes would be under threat from Richarlison. Don't agree with it personally, but the discussion was slugged out for weeks before this weekend.

Not sure that's quite true. Of course it will happen in some games.

Richarlison though could be to start in a cup game to rest Son or Kane, or after 65 mins for them too.

Spurs have improved squad depth and they're more likely to win a cup than the league.

          So expect rotation.

Kulusevski, Son and Kane all stand out players.

Yeh, I'm not saying it's true either _ I don't agree with it. I'm saying that was the narrative before we finalised our teams, and the OP might subscribe to it and planned to have him for one GW before switching to an 8m City player for the BOU game.

Yeh, Kulu has singlehandedly changed Spurs' attack and ahe'd be mad to 'drop' him - plus considering what he said about players having earned there place in starting XI, I really can't see it any time soon.

One thing I took away from the City game is that the mids will be looking to feed Haaland. There won't be so many goals from midfield, albeit plenty assists. Spurs will spread the goals amongst the front 3 more, I think.

when you look at the template team for the next 4-6 weeks (assuming Haaland over Kane), you could pretty much not make a single transfer.

I know things will happen that changes that, but it shows how strong the template was again.

If the template was so strong why the consternation on Saturday?

So Arsenal and Manchester City largely came through and Salah too.

Friday and Sunday was enough and Chelsea defence but there were plenty of jitters in template picks too.

I started Cash and Bailey. One or both might be benched for Aaronson and/or Andreas. Both deserve to start, but Villa are home to Everton so maybe get a last chance.

I changed my team last min like i do every year - this is an earlier draft i did when game first loaded and prefered it much more than the ones i was tinkering with last week. I'm officially my own worst nightmare. I ended up benching Mitro, KDH & Sessegnon

Not a fan as such, but my hunch is he will. It wasn't just Darwin, Elliot coming on as sub improved the Reds a lot. He combines in triangles with Trent and Salah like no one else does. Thiago's out for a couple of games, so I reckon it will be Harvey who steps up (and Hendo moves across).

Anyone looking at Haaland to Kane in GW3? This season already feels very difficult to gain rank with the template being so strong. Maybe the best way to do it is to switch around the big hitters?

      Yes its a potential play

Will depend alot on how stabile NEW and Wolves look week 2

away at NEW will not be super easy - but then again Haaland could score against anynone. ID imagine howe will set a very deep block and maybe play 5 across the back and bring Botman in to join Schar and Burn

Keep Kane for GW2 or sell to Darwin? Missed the price drop so will wait for more news. Might get a double drop though!

    Already have Haaland and Salah.

Gameweek 3-6 is strong for Kane and he could be a differential in GW2. But think Darwin could fire v Palace.

    Thoughts?

No Darwin, kulu or martinelli scares me after watching their form this weekend and expect them all to rise this week..
