We’ve put together our Scout Picks ‘bus team’ ahead of Gameweek 2 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

For those who haven’t seen this article series before, it’s essentially a rough, first draft of our regular picks, which get finalised and published much closer to the deadline.

We are limited to a £83.0m budget for our starting XI, unless using a back-five formation. In that scenario, it drops to £82.5m, as £17.5m is the minimum spend that our substitutes will cost.

READ MORE: Readers vote for the Scout Picks substitutes bench to be price-capped

The final picks will stay as they are and cement our weekly selection based on the Scout Squad long-list entries and fresh injury updates but this ‘bus team’ article – a term coined by the Always Cheating boys â€“ will discuss the players who are likely to be in the running.

Off we go again, then, with our early thoughts on the runners and riders up for selection in Gameweek 2, followed by the preliminary picks themselves.

THE LIKELY LADS

learning-from-the-great-and-the-good-21-22-closing-time 1

The opening weekend of the 2022/23 Premier League season produced plenty of surprises, with Manchester United suffering defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion and Liverpool dropping points at newly-promoted Fulham.

However, Mohamed Salah‘s (£13.0m) opening-day double-digit haul felt reassuringly familiar, rewarding those who captained him with a goal and assist.

Erling Haaland (£11.6m), meanwhile, also started fast with a brace of goals at West Ham United, and it’s clear the pair are the two stand-out attacking options to own ahead of Gameweek 2.

Defensive cover from both Liverpool and Manchester City also feels important, with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) our favoured routes in, given their ability to contribute points at both ends of the pitch.

Manchester United make no sense trying to sign Arnautovic, you have lots of young English strikers like Calvert-Lewin Patrick Bamford or Tammy Abraham, that are realistic options.

Throwing money away buying one of them.

You are not throwing money away if you buy a football player and they improve the quality of your team, that is the point of buying players.

They bought Sancho etc, hasn't proved to be improvement.

What is the argument, that you shouldn't sign good players because that won't improve the team. Just because one good player is a failure doesn't mean that you should stop attempting to buy good players.

The 3 you mentioned aren't going to improve them much and are also expensive.

Calvert Lewin has scored 16 goals in a season Bamford has scored 17 goals in a season and Tammy Abraham scored 17 goals for Roma. It is better than nothing, Manchester United play like a mid table team great players don't want to play for them.

Arnie spent most of the last few years in China. He might have been a good player once.

DCL and Bamford are injury doubts - they need to play half a season without breaking to give confidence they're back. Tammy's doing great at Roma - why would he leave a great job to join a bunch of losers? You should realise from the De jong saga, good players don't want to join United.

I think Tammy is the best option, they would need to pay him a lot of money, but that is what you have to do when you are desperate.

You're not getting it. They've offered DeJong all the money in the world - he doesn't want to play for a cr4p team. Why would Tammy?

If Manchester United weren't a bunch of pathetic weak minded losers, maybe top players would want to play for them. Nobody wants to play for a team with an idiot like Maguire as the captain. So yes players like Bamford Calbert-Lewin and Abraham are realistic options for a giant club that isn't collapsing but has collapsed.

The problem with Man Utd is not in attack, it is defense & midfield! (And attitude of course)

      1. Andy_Social
        • 13 Years
        3 years, 9 months ago

They do have problems in attack - Rash and Sancho, plus Bruno and Eriksen can't press from the front. The midfield problems are more serious and need prioritising, but even if they got De Jong (they won't), he wouldn't by himself turn United into an efficient machine.

Bank. 1of main rules of FPL is not waste trades on GKs and here 1 week in you are thinking about it. If one dropping in price or a 4.5m you want rising later maybe but too soon for burning trades on GK

Haaland will get like 35 goals this season if he can stay fit throughout..each and every City player has been trying to get him in selflessly every time they have the ball in the final third, plus he is already an elite finisher

    1. lugs
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 9 months ago

that means he beats the record for goals scored in a season, its possible but i doubt it, he is an elite finisher though, the way he buried that second goal then i knew i just had to have him

    2. FPL Elephant
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 9 months ago

It’s a really interesting one. He thrives when defences play high. He scored the second one when West Ham pushed for an equaliser and moved up the pitch. If teams sit deep, and tight, we’ll have to see how he fairs - perhaps this is when KDB will outscore him.

Saying this though… does that mean he’ll score more against top 10 than bottom 10? That would be odd…

      1. Sanchit
        • 10 Years
        3 years, 9 months ago

The first (and maybe second) goals might come from intricate play between Kdb foden Mahrez Grealish but after that teams will surely push forward to try and get something from the match which leaves Haaland the space he needs.

Also, very possible that the first couple of goals end up in being tap ins for Haalaand looking at how central he is

I was down on Walker until I saw him play inverted winger GW1. Interesting prospect now apart from Foden not passing into his overlapping runs

Zinchenko is a little up in the air re his position and starts I think. I went Gabriel cos the first two looked ripe for set-piece goals

Plan was Kane out for Haaland but I can’t do that now… Don’t want to lose Robbo, no but hard to know who else to downgrade.
Jesus or Mount would be other options.

Basically just scared if not owning Haaland for the Bournemouth game

Ah ok, the Kane to Haaland transfer was popular as a pre-planned move. Tough one really, surely there is some way to squeeze the money out of someone else rather than Robbo, because Robbo will probably outscore most mids up to 8.5 mill

          Or just WC 😉

I worked in a fix in my initial squad. I started Bailey with Aaronson on my bench. He can step up, as can Andreas. But maybe I give Bailey a last chance home to Everton.
If you didn't plan ahead, maybe you've got Andreas on your bench - he deserves a start.

Can someone please breakdown the Arsenal defenders situation for me?

Who is a threat to who? Is it only Tierney to Zinchenko? and who is the safest option that also offers some threat?

Salibas a good shout at 4.5. Should get the occasional bonus as well and the odd goal from a set piece.

Gabriel is the safest but 0.5 more expensive.

its a difficult one to call as the team is playing really well right now so Arteta might opt to not change things, Tierney & Tomi though are really good fb's so if the levels drop they could easily replace Zinc & White if fit, Gabriel is 100% nailed & Saliba is a better player than White so he keeps his place too i think

Tierney is a threat to Zinchenko, Tomiyasu is a threat to White, White may be a threat to Gabriel and Saliba looks the best option.

Bournemouth should be a game that will suit Pep to play Mahrez more than West Ham was, they defended very deep but looked like they wanted to counter quickly as they did in their game last season but City were set up very well to counteract that and stop it through their high pressing which isn't something Mahrez exactly exceeds at. Whether that's what Pep thinks though...

i didn't see the game but you'd have to think its a possibility after a 2-0 loss

    2. Andy_Social
      • 13 Years
      3 years, 9 months ago

I think the issue was the midfield were not supplying the front 3. It's not that Bailey was bad. But it does entice me to bench him for the next game. Gerrard could revert to a front 2, but I don't think that where the problems lay. I'm thinking, 'Villa can't score, but neither can Everton'. So Cash gets one reprieve because Villa have a decent chance of a clean sheet, but Gerrard needs to reconfigure his attack before I start Bailey.

Holding onto Kane + Haaland for now, but very tempting to shift from Kane to Darwin..

    a) Darwin's fixture much easier, and Man Utd after isn't a tough fixture. Even if benched, like he has done before he is capable of scoring

    b) Kane was playing quite deep which is concerning

    c) it frees up cash going forward to e.g. upgrade defence / bring in Kulu

Is there something to be said for just making the switch? Or wait to see if he nicks a goal against Chelsea e.g. a pen

He's been impressive that's for sure, but from what I saw of the Newcastle game so did Trippier and Newcastle in general looked good defensively. Still possible City sign a LB and Cancelo moves over or Stones plays at RB though

I feel stuck with some players just because they could go crazy and/or they have great fixtures coming. Perisic, Sterling, Rashford, Mahrez and Watkins all blanked GW1. I can't believe my team is still worth 100m if honest! Fingers crossed GW2, or I'm in dire straights already.

How to make a bad start (56 points) look better
I captained my highest scoring player (Salah)
I was only 1 point of picking my strongest team (Patterson 2pt for either Trent or Cash 1pt
All of my squad played inc. 3 of my 4 subs started
Transferred Kane to Haaland picking up £0.1m rise & avoiding £0.1m fall .
10 of my team play at home in gw2 (Son my only away player)
    No hits taken or planed
Cheeky £0.5m ITB to cover any rises or falls

        I've read about previous winners
On thing I've noticed that they make a plan & stick to it
All events in football are random just because a player scores points one week doesn't mean it happen next week .

Good outlook. At the end of the day the games about having fun. It’s not fun if you’re constantly beating yourself up over transfers not made etc etc (like I do haha). At the end of the day there’s a massive element of randomness that you can’t do anything about
