Scout Picks - Bus Team

We’ve put together our Scout Picks ‘bus team’ ahead of Gameweek 2 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

For those who haven’t seen this article series before, it’s essentially a rough, first draft of our regular picks, which get finalised and published much closer to the deadline.

We are limited to a £83.0m budget for our starting XI, unless using a back-five formation. In that scenario, it drops to £82.5m, as £17.5m is the minimum spend that our substitutes will cost.

READ MORE: Readers vote for the Scout Picks substitutes bench to be price-capped

The final picks will stay as they are and cement our weekly selection based on the Scout Squad long-list entries and fresh injury updates but this ‘bus team’ article – a term coined by the Always Cheating boys â€“ will discuss the players who are likely to be in the running.

Off we go again, then, with our early thoughts on the runners and riders up for selection in Gameweek 2, followed by the preliminary picks themselves.

THE LIKELY LADS

learning-from-the-great-and-the-good-21-22-closing-time 1

The opening weekend of the 2022/23 Premier League season produced plenty of surprises, with Manchester United suffering defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion and Liverpool dropping points at newly-promoted Fulham.

However, Mohamed Salah‘s (£13.0m) opening-day double-digit haul felt reassuringly familiar, rewarding those who captained him with a goal and assist.

Erling Haaland (£11.6m), meanwhile, also started fast with a brace of goals at West Ham United, and it’s clear the pair are the two stand-out attacking options to own ahead of Gameweek 2.

Defensive cover from both Liverpool and Manchester City also feels important, with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) our favoured routes in, given their ability to contribute points at both ends of the pitch.

Rashford pick was a mistake. Now he will have to stay in the team for next two weeks and swap for Brighton/Leeds mids GW4

I normally wouldn't be too keen on labelling any player as a mistake this early on but if I had Rashford I'd be tempted to cut my losses and get rid quickly. There's no sign anything has changed with him at all and until we see that happen I don't think there's any value to him as a pick, doesn't matter what position he's in

Rashford can get goals. Don't rush to hasty conclusions based on one match. I've got him. I'm giving him 5 games before deciding. No selections can be classed as mistakes after one game

Well, have you ever judged a player on one match in FPL and sold them and got burnt when they scored the next week and the player you replaced them with blanked?
Sometimes, patience is required. Kneejerk decisions backfire season after season. I know United are disjointed and a bit sloppy, but I looked at the 6-6.5 mids and chose him. I'm sticking for now.

I wasn't attracted to Neto or ASM or Ward Prowse particularly. I've e owned them all in the past and they don't deliver fpl points regularly. I predict Rashford will get a goal against Brentford .

Agree you don't really need to do anything major until gw5.

Son to Kulu would free up funds to upgrade Bailey (or bring in TAA or Nunez instead). Alternatively there are some decent 5-6m to hop around between (Gross, Aaronson, KDH etc)

      Very nice.

There is no optimal as you'll want the one that scores the most points every week. And that won't be Lerma every week.

Potentially keepers and Mount are the players I might change.

Fofana to Chelsea would be a bit of a shake up. With a lot of people on premiums, are you dropping any of them for him?

Surely at 4.5m too good to turn down.

He was in my initial draft at Leicester so I'd be keen on him. That being said I'd wait a while for him to settle, still wary of rotation with Tuchel no matter what they've paid on a player

  8. Eze Really?

    My players so far:
Ward: A 4 mil saving to hope I would get an early reward: A mistake with Iverson on my bench.
RJames: Getting away with it atm: At 6 mil he warrants a continuation.
Cancelo: What was expected: As with James, bonus points with a yellow card.
TAA: Everyone's pick: I went with Robbo and my bed is made: Should be OK.
Robbo: I was tempted to go without TAA and keep him: I don't like doubling up in defense early on.
Neco: A 4 mil enabler so no comment as yet.
Martinelli: An obvious pick for me and good fixtures upcoming. Hopefully he keeps his place.
Mount: An 8 mil cover and it could have been 1 of 5: Time will tell.
Salah: Not impressed with his performance but he is who he is.
Bailly: I went with pre season noise. At 5 mil not serious.
Andreas: Seems the correct 4.5 pick.
Jesus; No points but a good performance. Keeping.
Kane: The big decision that went wrong. His pre season got him my vote: Early change to Haaland. (My only real regret)
Archer: Chose a player who would not drop at the price point.

A 90% template team with 10 home games next week. Hopefully an improvement on the 58 points so far.

I have Sanchez to your Iversen, and I played him over Ward. The rest identical. 61 for me, did Kane to Haaland before price rise. No regrets for me though, was not a bad decision.

Let's hope Mount and Pool defence comes good this week, then we're laughing. Giving Haaland the armband this week

Everton are a much bigger club than Wolves, they're just in a big mess with a crap manager.

Gross positional stats are very encouraging from that game though. Very offensive, just behind Wellbeck. On pens too. Like you say, he probably has had ‘his day’ but there might be some mileage here.

He was an inch away from becoming a GW2 bandwagon. He’ll do well this season. Rodrigo probably the higher ceiling though per game.

    Who's the captain this week?

    A Haaland
    B Salah
    C Saka
    D Jesus

Just got Haaland in, will he smash another couple in? Is Salah safer?

Jesus and Saka are hauling this weekend too, but I won't really captain them.

To anyone that missed my last post - Perisic, Sterling, Rashford, Mahrez and Watkins all blanked GW1 for me. I feel stuck with those big potentials because they could go crazy and/or they have great fixtures coming. Should I tinker, clear them all out, or give them GW2?

    1. polis

You're not changing them all unless you WC. Depends on how aggressively you play the game.

Perisic (rotation and Sess looking good) and Rash (Utd) would be my two to go first.

There’s no way to tell, gotta go with your gut. I went w the clear out w the early WC cos I personally saw enough to know the team I like to carry forth in the weeks ahead. May be wrong but going w my gut

I would propably clear them all to be honest but there is another option:

Do you have a playing bench?

Bench Perisic, move Rashford (--> Martinelli?) and Watkins for -4. Keep Mahrez and Sterling.

Honestly I don't see any of them going crazy and think there are better and more reliable picks that will give you a much stronger team. You may actually be better off wildcarding now as opposed to stretching the transfers one gw at a time and losing rank

I'd give them 1 more week. You didn't waste a month to pick a team for 1 gw only

Have Perisic and Rashford. Keeping the latter cause he got good chances even in a bad Utd game
And thinking of shifting Perisic, maybe even this week

    7. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years

Certainly don't get rid of them all, I'm not keen on Rashford as a pick personally but I never was. I think Perisic can still be a good pick but Conte's comments about playing players that finished last season and giving time for others to settle. Perisic only getting 30 mins last week doesn't bode great for a game away to Chelsea. Watkins has a good fixture, Mahrez like Rashford I don't love but because you can't rely on him starting. I'd give him one more week.

If you have to have a 3rd City player, then I suppose James to Walker could work. Feels short term though and I'd probably stick with James.

There's only about 4 or 5 City players that are nailed and they are all premium priced for their positions. Any other player is prone to Pep Roulette and could easily find themselves not on the team

Wouldn't expect a clean sheet against Southampton, they're horrific defensively but decent offensively and Leicester didn't look great. From MOTD at least Brentford had far higher quality chances against Leicester than Leicester did

Triple City defence could be an interesting differential as most only have 1. Maybe moving Kane to Nunez could free up funds to upgrade Neto later.

That said though, I think 2 city defenders and Haaland may be the best way forward. Downgrade Ederson to a 5.0 and Kane to Haaland could also work if you have FOMO over Haaland

For me Odergaard's game won't convert to FPL points though. A classy footballer but Jesus, Saka, Martinelli will reap the FPL rewards for his hard work. Love watching him play.

Tis sensible analysis. But I’d at least give him a further week before casting aside.

Aaronson or Bailey. They're both playing weak teams though so tough to split.

                Probably would start Bailey

Southampton were really weak down their left with Djenepo at LWB. Aaronson will be loving this matchup if they persist with it

While tinkering with my squad on wc, accidentally saved changes for kulu to Diaz and lost 0.1. What a novice move.

              How does this squad look?

              Mendy ward
              Cancelo walker zinchenko trippier neco
              Salah Diaz martinelli KDH Andreas
              Jesus Darwin haaland

                Like a pre GW1 squad

No TAA is the main issue here. Jesus looks overrated to me in terms of EO.

How is Jesus overrated after one GW? Please elaborate more.

Will the be great pick of he gets a brace on GW2?

Overrated in terms of EO. Price point is attractive.
Here, one trade-off of holding Jesus is apparently TAA, who also didn't give returns in GW1.
So if I need to choose between Jesus and TAA, I'd go with the later. This view can change after we have a few weeks of performance.

Thanks for the clarification. I have to disagree based on it has been one GW only. You cannot possibly judge Jesus whether he is rated or not after one GW.

What I see in the coming weeks, his EO to drop.

I wish I can have a crystal ball too 🙂

Joke aside, I reckon his EO will probably drop too due to other players stepping and being more cheaper, Mitro etc.

But I also think he’ll still be great asset in terms of FPL points

There's a reason his EO is high.

I see 10 players that returned last week, + Jesus, Diaz and fodder. Feels far too much like chasing last weeks' points

If it's for free then Saliba is worth a look.
