Gameweek 3 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) concludes with a fixture that has plenty riding on it, not just for us Fantasy managers.

Manchester United and Liverpool have had poor early starts to their respective campaigns and so far don’t have a win between them.

The game is also being played against the backdrop of yet another demonstration against United’s much-maligned owners, with planned shows of dissent inside and outside Old Trafford.

Kick-off, pre-match protests permitting, is at 20:00 BST.

As for the team news, Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag makes four changes to the side that started the desperate 4-0 loss at Brentford.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Fred are all benched as Anthony Elanga, Tyrell Malacia, Scott McTominay and Raphael Varane are handed recalls.

“We know Liverpool are a really good team and you need to press them. You have to do that out of a block and need energy, that is why we went with Rashford, Sancho, Elanga.” – Erik ten Hag on dropping Cristiano Ronaldo

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp meanwhile makes three alterations from the side that drew 1-1 against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 2.

Roberto Firmino is in for the suspended Darwin Nunez, while Jordan Henderson and Joe Gomez replace Fabinho and Nathaniel Phillips.

The most-captained player of Gameweek 3, Mohamed Salah, features in tonight’s match, with 2.4 million FPL bosses handing him the armband.

The Egyptian has scored or assisted in four of his last five appearances against tonight’s opponents, averaging 12 points per match in that time.

People are free to choose whoever but how many people visiting this site and YouTube have been persuaded into going big at the back with all heavy hitters and been talked out of buying and starting players like Dunk.

Big at the back still has its merits. On paper it makes a lot of sense.

No one on here, YouTube or Twitter has a crystal ball however. Pool are rarely this poor at the back. City let in 3 vs Newcastle very few would have predicted.

Trent, James, Cancelo, Robbo and co will still finish amongst the highest scoring players imo.

No if course. I guess my point was there has been an narrative that there was so much value with the big teams that there was no need for the Dunks.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 13 Years
          3 years, 11 months ago

The narrative was valid, and I believe that in general it still is. Liverpool's defence is affected by midfield injuries that will clear up, and Chelsea will get there in 2 or 3 weeks. City's 3 conceded was a one-off. Brighton won't sustain their fine start although some of those 4.5 defenders from smaller teams do offer value in the short term.
With 2 Liverpool and 2 Chelsea defenders, I'm hurting this week, but I'll not knee-jerk and with their GW4 fixtures, I'll give them one more game before reassessing.

Might be too late by then. I think all players will have lots invested in defence, myself included. I don't see me waiting for the tide to turn tho.

          Agreed, that’s fair enough.

Maybe this start is a blessing, meaning the likes of Dunk, Saliba, Rodrigo will force a break from the template. Maybe makes threemium viable too.

Despite Liverpool being poor, Salah has gotten into decent positions. Only if Diaz played him in a couple instances. C not looking very optimistic for now, but it's not as dark as Liverpool's collective showing so far.

Fabinho and VVD have lost form, Nunez suspension couldn't have come at a worst time, when he's been on the pitch Liverpool have been far more threatening even if he has missed sitters

I don't think signing a midfielder solves the problems, we're still trying to play vertically while everyone we play knows that and cuts off the passing lanes while getting back into their own box. We have no creativity to break down low blocks. I think the system has to evolve.

Thought I could find a suitable replacement for Sterling after watching today's match. Nobody seems enticing. Diaz maybe, but will probably just save the FT.

They will, tonight. Liverpool looked clueless for the first half an hour. But, they are slowly getting into the game.

Hodor was predicting FPL and people thought that he was saying "Big at the back", but he was trying to say "Big in attack".
