Gameweek 8 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will go ahead this weekend – but there’ll only be seven Premier League matches taking place.

As feared, two further fixturesManchester United v Leeds United and Chelsea v Liverpool have been postponed because of policing resources needed in London for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, which takes place next Monday.

Brighton and Hove Albion v Crystal Palace also remains off, despite the train strike that precipitated the postponement now being cancelled.

The revised Gameweek 8 schedule now looks like this (UK dates/times are listed):

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR FPL MANAGERS? INITIAL REACTION

After an opening month in which there was plenty of ‘template’ tedium and thinly veiled humble brags from FPL managers burning transfers because their squads were apparently unimprovable, we’ve now got some welcome chaos.

It’s not quite the full-on bedlam many of us had feared/hoped for, however, as there had been initial suggestions that all three London-based fixtures would be called off. That scenario would have left many of us well short of a full starting XI and prompted a lot more discussion about Wildcards and Free Hits.

As it turns out, most of us may be able to get to an 11-strong line-up without much fuss – although the lack of a fixture for Liverpool, Chelsea and Brighton in particular may be the Buckaroo moment for those FPL managers hovering over the Wildcard button.

We’ll be exploring the pros and cons of a Gameweek 8 Wildcard in a follow-up piece.

How does this WC look? Want to keep enough ITB to do KDB to Salah down the road.

    Pope
    Perisic Trippier Cancelo
    KDB Martinelli Maddison Andreas
    Haaland Jesus Mitrovic

    Ward Bailey Neco James

James in for Andreas next GW for a pretty strong starting 11.

          Like KDB more than Son.

Would love Kane, but stretching Jesus to him really weakens my defense and midfield. To do Jesus to Kane I basically need to downgrade Maddison to a min cost midfielder.

Not sure on Perisic. Think he'll start the Leicester game but after that there's still the rotation risk with Sessegnon. I've gone for Dier myself for the security of a nailed defender

Jesus surviving in a WC? Next few fixtures are terrible and Arsenal may not score a lot of goals there.

Think I would be tempted with Haaland up top with Mitro & Toney and then spend the cash to upgrade that awful midfield and bench.

Would certainly get Rashford for Bailey.

My mate keeps at this line that Liverpool is anti-Royal and Chelsea monarchist?

This sounds like oversimple factional fiction to me.

Am I right that this is pigeonholing or no actually Chelsea supporters are not like everyone else moaning about the nuisance of all this.

    1. gart888
      • 11 Years

In broad terms he's not wrong. Liverpool is pretty anti london/torry/monarchy. Chelsea is a rich place that generally likes those things.

Of course actual individual people have their own opinions.

So I live in West London, I like Liverpool but avoid being a ‘fan’.

Chelsea is my closest club but I don’t live in Chelsea borough. It seems Chelsea is home turf here and adjacent, which includes very un gauche areas like Grenfell Tower.

Sure I get that Chelsea has wealthy fans with the location of the stadium. But London itself is less Tory than most of the country. I don’t understand Lpool fans pretending like it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to get in, plus they have more revenue than Chelsea.

He’s telling me the game is cancelled because Chelsea doesn’t want unceremonious Liverpool fans this weekend. That seem more fan fiction than fact, which the man power issues.

So am I giving my friend a hard time because I’m tired of the pigeonholing approach to politics/sports, or am I rightly pointing to his whitewashing techniques, which makes him sulky?

1FT, 2.6m in the bank. Initial thought was to sell Gross and buy ASM / JWP / Bowen and bench Neco. But, now I am considering saving the FT for IB. Already used my Wildcard.

    Pope
    Cancelo - Trippier - Saliba - Neco
    KDB - Martinelli - Andreas
    Haaland - Toney - Mitrovic

    Ward - Gross* - Sterling* - Struijk*

    A) Save FT for IB injuries.
    B) Gross to ASM / JWP / Bowen / Maddison (bench Neco).
    C) Sterling + Toney --> Bowen / Maddison + Kane (-4). Captain Kane and bench Neco. But, Toney plays Bournemouth away next game.

I like C as an option. Especially if you're planning on captaining Kane in gw8. I would still hold onto Kane up until gw12 (he's scored 13 goals in 15 games against Arsenal so have no issues playing him in gw9).

He's also the best captain for gw11 against Everton (13 goals in 14 games against them) when Haaland plays at Anfield.

Thanks. That's the option I am most interested in, but the hit involved is making me think twice. Will Bowen score 4 more than Neco to cover the hit? Is Kane (C) + Haaland better than Haaland (C) + Toney? Also, Sterling can score many points over their sea of green fixtures.

    Raya (Ward)

    Perisic Cancelo N.Williams Trippier
    Andreas Martinelli Son (C)
    Toney Haaland Jesus

    DaSilva TAA Zaha

    0FT

    Thoughts?

Tempted to resist the WC this GW, based on the outfield players I cam currently start.

Went Salah to Son with my FT. Complete gamble, fully aware Son has looked woeful thus far.

    What to do here?

    Pope (BOU)
Cancelo (wol), Trippier (BOU) Williams, (FUL)
Gundo (wol), Martineli (bre), Andreas (for), DaSilva (ARS)
Kane (LEI), Haaland (wol), Jesus (bre)

    Ward (TOT), Diaz, James, Cucurella

    1 FT, 1.9 ITB

Likely wildcarding next week, so ideally wouldn't want to save my FT.

    Ward
    Walker - Saliba - Neco
    Martinelli - ASM - MGW - Andreas
    Haaland - Toney - Mitrovic

Looks like the template will finally be changing now. A lot of teams are moving away from some of the "magnificent 7" players owned by too many managers.

Magnificent 7 - Salah, TAA, Cancelo, Haaland, Jesus, Martinelli, James. All have had over 40% ownership.

How many will you have going into gw8? I'm down to 4 now

    Cancelo Trippier Perisic (Dalot, Neco)
    KdB Marti Gordon Bailey (Rashford)
    Kane Haaland Isak
0.1 itb and 1 FT to roll fwd

    Pope
    TAA*, Cancelo, James*, Saliba
    Salah*, Gross*, Martinelli
    Haaland, Jesus, Toney

    (Ward, Andreas, Baily, Neco)
    With 2FT and 1M itb

TAA + Salah > Trippier + KDB is a no brainer right? I'll also have enough funds for going Jesus > Kane next week

If you've got the funds, I'd take the -4 this week and do Jesus to Kane as well. He's got a great gw8 fixture and a great captaincy option this week (and for gw11 as well when Liverpool play City)

This has to be a WC right, despite 2FT?

    Ward
    Cancelo, Walker, Trippier
    Martinelli, Andreas
    Haaland, Jesus

Sanchez, Dunk, Trent, Salah, Diaz, Gross, Archer
    Bank 0.5m, 2FTs

I was in a similar position, with 7 starters. I figured I'd rather lose Brighton assets, Archer and some if not all of my Liverpool and Arsenal assets anyway, which I would have done in a GW9 WC anyway. So bringing the WC ahead a week early seems the right thing to do.
In your case, if you don't want to get rid of Liverpool, Arsenal and/or Brighton assets, maybe you don't WC just on account of this GW.

Debating myself whether to activate WC, can get 10 out with a -4. Very much undecided at this point.

I mean a -4 gives you a starting XI? If losing Liverpool assets, go for the WC.

Yeah I would wildcard. Team needs to be restructured to go 3 up top. It's not strong enough in it's current state to handle gw8 and will need more than 2FT to fix.

Plus you'll have an issue with 6 players playing in the gw9 game between Liverpool and Brighton.

If that was my team and irrespective of blanks I would want to lose

Ward, Walker, Jesus (maybe) Sanchez, Trent, Salah, Gross, Archer

2FTs and 0.1 ITB Thoughts very much appreciated.

    Ward
    Cancelo Neco
    KDB Martinelli
    Jesus Toney

(Iverson Salah Rashford Dalot James Greenwood TAA Gross)

Salah and Greenwood to Andreas/Bailey and Haaland will get me 9, could take a hit and shift James or TAA for 10 otherwise WC is also an option?

Trent & Stansfield > Neco & Mitrovic (free) done. Just about fielding a starting XI this week.

I knew I should've done this days ago, lost another 0.1M on Mitrovic rise.

      Haaland (c), Jesus, Mitro

      Sanchez*, Luis Diaz*, James*, Cucurella

      2.7M ITB w/ 1FT for GW9. Probably take a -4

Seems like the play here is to hit out salah/Diaz/James, etc, and then wildcard the players you want back in next GW, no?

Also… to vent a moment. Once per year I make a trek with my mates to England just to watch matches. We picked next weekend with tickets to Arsenal PSV, Brighton v CP and Chelsea v Liverpool secured long ago. Can our luck be any worse?

Now seeing AV, Preston and Everton. Glad we could still make a go of it!

You have to be kidding (re: tickets bought) that's some next level atrocious luck, by a lottery ticket.

You have no idea. Absolutely gutted this morning when the PSV and Chelsea games bit the dust.

-8 Locked & Loaded, now just hope and pray for 11 starters!

    Ederson
    Trippier Neco Patterson
    KdB Martinelli Andreas Bailey
    Kane Haaland Mitrovic
    (Ward *Trent *James *Aaronson)
    1.2

It's a bad state of affairs when you go for a -8 and still have to start Neco, Patterson, Andreas & Bailey 😉

On the WC. Best up to £4.6m defender til World Cup that plays this week?

Neco seems an okayish shout but I'd prefer something better

Tough one as most of the decent options around that price have a blank gameweek such as Dalot, Dunk, Fofana

Maybe Ming's at 4.3m could be a decent option? Has a good gw8 fixture and Villa have a lot of green fixtures up until the World Cup if you need to play him again.

Emerson at West Ham could also be an alternative to Neco.

Or you could secretly hope that the other Emerson at Spurs picks up a knock in the CL and opens the door for Doherty to take his place where he offers far more attacking intent

I just want to spice my season up so I'm going to take a punt on Son instead of Kane for this week.

My move is Salah to Son rather than one of Toney/Jesus to Kane

    1. WC.
    2. Salah + Archer -> Son + Isak (-4).
    3. Salah -> Son
    4. Other moves.

Leaning WC tbh- what do we reckon?
    Ward.
    Cancelo, Trippier, Saliba.
    *Salah, Andreas, Gundo, Martinelli.
    Haaland, Mitrovic, Archer.
    *Sanchez, *James, *Cucarella, *Diaz.

Would you lose Groz in draft team and get someone like Paqueta/Bowen who has good fixtures coming up?

My problem with a GW8 trade. There are so few players to own.

The cancellations put 4 field players as zeros. James, TAA, Dias, and Rashford.

But the trades are for players I don't want.
