Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead analyses the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this season are the BlackBox pair of Mark Sutherns and Az, Scouts Joe LepperTom FreemanNeale Rigg, Geoff Dance, Pro Pundits PrasZophar and FPL Harry, FPL “celebrities” Magnus CarlsenFPL GeneralLTFPL AndyBen Crellin, from the Hall of Fame, Fabio BorgesFPL MatthewFinn Sollie and Tom Stephenson and of course last year’s mini-league winner and overall no. 2 Suvansh.

“Here comes the Son”

Son Heung-min (£11.7m) was the king this week with a rapid, regal hat-trick to those who kept the faith, one of which was our very own FPL Grandmaster, Magnus Carlsen.

Prior to Gameweek 8, we had to deal with the non-event that was Gameweek 7, although there was at least some transfer activity and odd captain choices to report – I doubt we’ll see Danny Ward (£4.0m) with the armband again. It also triggered a multitude of Wildcards.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Magnus was filled with Son-shine as he was the high flyer this week with a score of 80 points. As well as the Spurs hitman, he also has Alexsander Isak (£7.1m), Joao Cancelo (£7.2m) and the lesser spotted Lucas Digne (£4.7m) to thank for the dazzling start to his Wildcard.

FPL Harry still remains at the summit with a creditable 71 points and moves to just outside the top 30,000. A certain William Saliba (£4.9m) was his hero with 15 points, which makes him the highest scoring defender in the game.

The YouTuber extraordinaire did lose some conduct points for flagrant bench tomfoolery as he left Kevin De Bruyne (£12.3m), Cancelo and Kieran Trippier (£5.4m) on the sidelines, only for their 24 points to be auto-subbed in at the end of the weekend.

The tables for the last two weeks are below.

WILDCARDS

You wait for one Wildcard and then 10 of the buggers come along at once! It was a right royal queue and the early overhaulers of Az, Mark and Geoff could only look on in envy as the perfect 10 prepared their squads for the Gameweek 8 blank and even keep one eye on the Gameweek 12 Arsenal v Manchester City reschedule.

The good news is that there was a bit of variety in approach but the unanimous decision was that Mohamed Salah’s (£12.9m) services were surplus to requirements. Suvansh has yet to own the Egyptian all season.

I suspect whether to own Salah will be a more difficult decision for those Wildcarding over the international break. Could he even become a differential?

The other majority decision was that three up front was back. After a pre-season bemoaning the forward options, the form of Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.9m), Ivan Toney’s (£7.2m) hat-trick and the fixtures of Isak suddenly made strikers sexy again.

It was a split decision as to whether to go Harry Kane (£11.4m) or De Bruyne, unless you were Ben Crellin in which you had both, as he was one of two to go the ‘threemium route’ with the inevitable Erling Haaland (£12.0m) making up the triple-up of terror.

Magnus has also gone ‘threemium’ but gambled on an out-of-form Son, which worked out pretty well. This meant he doubled up on a couple of £4.0m and below defenders, one of which I had to Google. Toti Gomes (£3.9m), anyone?!

He was not the only one to take advantage of the cheaper defensive options. Joe Lepper and FPL Matthew also went that route to allow them to join a number of The Great and The Good to have a duo of £7.0m-£8.0m midfielders, Jarrod Bowen (£8.1m), James Maddison (£7.9m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m) being the popular choices.

Finn Sollie and Tom Stephenson took it a step further with three midfielders in this price bracket. Finn’s choice of Phil Foden (£8.0m) gave early returns whilst Tom went Bukayo Saka (£7.8m), joining a number of others such as Ben Crellin and FPL General, with his returns this weekend a win for the quality over form argument.

A triple-up on City was obviously popular but a few decided it worth a roll of the dice on the Newcastle defence, with Tom Stephenson, Ben Crellin and FPL General all going with a trio of Magpies at the back. That Phillip Billing (£5.3m) goal must have been hard to stomach.

Talking of FPL General, his decision to leave £2.7m in the bank suggests he has a transfer or two booked in: could Salah or Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) make their return? He also only made seven changes, which was the lowest number along with Joe.

It’s also worth having a look at the Wildcard of Tom Freeman, who has taken bench strength to another level, with the rotation of Digne, Trippier, Andreas Pereira (£4.6m) and Anthony Gordon (£5.6m) looking to be his weekly decision from now on.

With regards to differentials, Ben Crellin’s decision to pick Tyrone Mings (£4.3m) looks inspired after his nine-point return. Finn Sollie will hope for similar from Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) and Zophar will hope that Kurt Zouma (£4.5m) can help turnaround West Ham’s fortunes.

I have listed the full ins and outs because I’m nice like that below.

TRANSFERS

What can we expect from Aleksandar Mitrovic and Fulham's midfielders in FPL? 5

Away from the madcap world of Wildcards, there were transfers to be made. Mitrovic and Trippier were the most popular of trades but it was nice to see Maddison and his number one fanboy Az finally reunited.

Fabio Borges took his first hit of the season and all three of his new additions returned, although he might have been better waiting on Harrison Reed (£4.5m), his 10 points were left wanting on the Portuguese’ bench.

TEMPLATE

A Wildcard whirlwind has ripped through the template with seven new additions, with Nick Pope (£5.2m), Ivan Perisic (£5.6m), De Bruyne, Maddison, Bowen, Mitrovic and Kane (phew) all now part of the squad.

Trippier now enters the exclusive 100% club along with Pereira and Gabriel Martinelli (£6.6m), who join him in the cordoned-off section, safe in the knowledge that everybody wants them.

Pope (13), Ward (10)

Trippier (18), Cancelo (14), James (12), Williams (9), Perisic/Alexander-Arnold (6)

Martinelli (18), Andreas (18), De Bruyne (11), Maddison (8), Bowen (6)

Haaland (17), Mitrovic (15), Kane (8)

CAPTAIN CALLS

Let’s take a quick glance at the captaincy success rate before we end. Az is possibly the surprising leading manager in this metric, a De Bruyne masterclass in Gameweek 2 the major contributing factor.

Salah remains the most popular choice over the season at 45%, based on early-season expectations, but he is slowly being chased down by the inevitable Haaland.

Mark has thrown his captaincy darts far and wide with five different picks to this point; maybe he should just go for the bullseye with Haaland as he currently sits on just 86 armband points for the season.

CONCLUSION

After a slow, template-dominated start to the season, things have picked up with blanks, Wildcards and fixture swings all leading to more diverse approaches.

So, my advice this week is to enjoy the international break as I suspect the weeks following it are going to be both painful and pleasurable in equal measure.

Anyway, that’s all from me for and remember don’t have nightmares.

Can afford Mings (4.3) - decent fixtures and nailed. But would be 2nd on my bench (after Andreas) most weeks I'd assume.

B for me - lots of people took Salah out on WC8, but he looked sharp v Ajax, on pens, and has been quite unlucky v xG.
Also if you're removing Jesus, Martinelli helps cover some Arsenal.

Yeah TAA got juicy fixtures then. I have sold him as well, plan to get him back for Cancelo in the coming GWs.
                  Why do you avoid Cancelo?

Cause he does not fit into my team with Trent and James plus Cancelo is blanking GW12. If Chelsea do not hit the ground running under potter then Sterling and James are bait to having both Cancelo and Trent, perhaps get Salah back if he trives in his new role at Liverpool.

Have GW9, 10 and 11 to see how things unfold. So I am quite happy with my team as for now.

Suspect Bowen will become Zaha in that template within 2 weeks.

Bowen had a terrific season and was their clear talisman last year. I think the fpl points will be spread more evenly in West Ham this year. Plus Bowen had an unusually high number of “fantasy” assists last year (7 ish?).

I’ve had him (plus Haaland and Jesus) from the start, and he’s done well. I started with a threemium (Salah too) thinking I’d captain each of them twice in the first 6 GW. But then Haaland quickly became inevitable.

I’m selling on WC to balance out my team. Outside GW 11 the captaincy likely to be Haaland or Salah all the way through 16 so he is an expensive differential I’m unlikely to captain. If he produces weekly it’s fine, but if he is not in the points for a few weeks straight it would be easy to lose ground given his high price. I’d like to come back around to him later in the season. Maybe when team value high enough to carry a third premium without limiting other areas of my team.

Haaland + Kane or Son on WC? Or fit both in? I really think Son will go back to his 2021/22 madness now. NLD coming up next and Kane/Son almost always return in those so I probably want them. Is a threemium really that bad?

Team could be set up like this:

      Guaita (Ward)

I'll be blunt with you - playing Mings & Neco every week is a terrible plan. I've seen some threemiums that kind of work but I think you'd need a budget mid & a stronger 4-4.5m defender (ideally Saliba if locked in at 4.5m). In this case I think choose one of Son/Kane - for me it would be Son

I like the idea of a threemium but I'm starting to warm to the theory that it's not the shrewdest way to approach things. Basically, the likes of Salah, Kane, Son, KDB and to a lesser extent Sterling are a bit overpriced and they don't give you enough bang for their buck unless you captain them for double returns. Otherwise, they're a bit of a burden on your finances. I think a second premium alongside Haaland is the absolute maximum amount any team needs.

True that. I have had three premiums along with TAA and suffered.
Still three premium but offloading TAA provided some respite.

How would you approach Salah on WC?
    I see the following options:

    1) Not getting him at any point, instead e.g. Diaz/Jota/Nunez
    2) Get him now
    3) Downgrade other premium and get him for GW12

In case of 2) and 3), how would you find him? Solanke over Toneyor cheaper mid over ~8.0 one?

Sola nke is a tranfer out waiting to happen and you will likely be stuck with him.

Upgrading him when you do not have sufficient dunds is a problem. Downgrading him to a non playing asset another problem.

Sorry for some auto -correct mistakes. Ofc in 3) I mean that you have to do like KDB, Kane or Son to Salah assuming you keep Haaland. You also have to downgrade somewhere else to find additional $.

    4. Deulofail
      • 10 Years

I don't see the need for him. I would probably get one Liverpool player on a WC at most, then maybe one or two more in GW12, but unlikely Salah, so no need for heavy planning.

If you want Salah in GW12, the move(s) depends on the players you own and like, so I think you just have to find your own plan. Otherwise, you're not playing FPL. 😀

Don't know. If I WC in GW13, I could bring in Darwin for GW12 to captain. But it depends on WC strategy. In any case, I should have Maddison and or Diaz and an option, or otherwise Mitrovic.

      3)

I think Liverpool players are overpriced based on their last season's point returns. So, I don't have any Liverpool players (since GW3). If they can become better at some point (not necessarily in GW12) the first two players to buy from that team would be Trent and Salah.

I have not thought about funding. I will not buy them unless they become better. Who knows? I don't want to restrict my team funds for someone who I may never purchase this season. In case they do and I have to buy them, I will find a way. There's always a way.

      Currently option 1 or a 1.a

      ----

Until this season Salah would be like Haaland a must as his form in the FPL over last five seasons, 265, 231, 233, 259 & 303.

averaging ok with two goals/two assists team structure not the same since Sane gone but a lot of money to be tied in one player when not at his height of previous season.

Plus I have found since returning from African National in January his form has been poor - I will monitor but will not be added to my squad this side of the World Cup where can analyse again then.

Personally, I think previous governments do need to take responsibility if you look at the big picture. They sold off rail, the utilities, oil. Didn't invest. Private companies need to make a profit. Paying below the going rate is one way to do that (large government subsidies another).

And they could renationalise. Though it's more and more difficult.

But, yes, I otherwise agree with your point.

    A. TAA & Solanke (3-4-3)
    B. Trippier & Toney (3-4-3)
    C. TAA & Trippier (4-4-2)

Was thinking about keepers. tell me what you think.

IF Trippier is a lock in the defence for most people.
THEN it is debatable whether to double up with Pope

IF one cant squeeze in Cancelo by going Kane/Haaland/KDB, then what is my best ManCity Exposure?

Does it lead to the conclusion that we should look at Ederson as the second best way to get a city defender?

I usually hate spending more than 4.5 on a keeper and I cant see much twitter talk about him so I thought I would ask.

I think that if Trippier didnt exist then Pope would be a total no brainer. but Trippier does exist!

You've given a reason not to own each player individually. If Trippiers team doesn't have great xGC, then don't own him? If Pope's team doesn't have great xGC, then don't own him?

If they are both worth it regardless, then own them both?

There's no reason to consider the relationship between Pope and Trippier (ie belonging to the same team), besides considerations of transfers when fixtures and from changes (although you probably won't be selling your GK before GW17) and the 3-player per team restriction, which is also probably irrelevant to you before we get unlimited transfers.

          1. Deulofail
            • 10 Years
            3 years, 5 months ago

So that does leave one reason to consider the double-up as an issue, which is potential postponements (if we hear enough in advance about them for you to benefit from decisions to transfer the player(s) out before the postponed game. However, I think this is a minor consideration only.

i disagree on this. I have trippier because he has attacking threat and Newcastle has empirically been good defensively, despite average stats.

the goalkeeper pick is for me more related to the team output than the individual output. the team output defensively is ok but not amazing so I dont know if I want to gamble 8 pts each week correlated to a NEW CS. a 4pt gamble hedged by the odd assist or goal feels more reasonable.

but i hear your argument and we all have different risk appetite

            1. Deulofail
              • 10 Years

The risk of owning Pope doesn't change depending on whether you own Trippier or not.

However, the likelihood of getting fewer points increases by not owning the (combination of) players likely to get the most points.

Your argument about Pope again seems to be about you considering him individually to not be the best pick, which is perfectly reasonable and nothing to do with owning Trippier.

i agree but then the question is: who is the starting keeper if not Pope?

Guaita is not certain to continue to start
        Other 4.5 have shaky defences
Mendy is not a certain starter anymore
        Ederson?

Guaita's risk is reduced having a playing 4.0 GK as backup

Mendy will be 1st GK whenever he is fit to play.
I picked Guaita on WC this GW and I am happy with him. Have Ward for backup and I don't see why Guaita is not certain to start? Butland is injuried, Johnstone is a good backup and that's it.
If you are still scared then go for Ederson. You can't waste 3rd City spot on Ederson, because you can pick 3 between KDB, Cancelo, Haaland and Ederson. Haaland is 100% in every team, Cancelo proving he is midfielder in defense so it is between Ederson and KDB.

Where best to find 1.1M that I've overspent on WC?
    4.5/4.0
    Cancelo James Trippier
    Sterling Maddison Zaha Martinelli
    Haaland Kane Mitrovic
    (Andreas Andersen Neco)

I have done almost same draft on WC, the only difference is Son instead of Sterling and different bench.
Maybe upgrade Neco? Forest is going down for sure and waiting for his "attacking return" will last forever.

I've only used him twice and he got a return in one of those!

How do you have so much money? this draft leaves me with -1.1 ITB

I have Saliba instead of James to fund a similar attack with KDB and Toney (instead of Zaha and Kane).

I preferred Sterling to James after watching Potter's first Chelsea game. Also, it is easier to buy James by selling Sterling than the other way around.
