FPL review: Haaland and Foden hit hat-tricks, Guardiola on rotation

The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Sunday’s fixtures are covered in this latest Scout Notes article.

A statistical summary of Sunday’s Gameweek 9 action can be found here.

The numbers you see in this piece are from our Premium Members area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

MANCHESTER CITY 6-3 MANCHESTER UNITED

 1

Erling Haaland’s (£12.1m) third consecutive hat-trick in a Premier League home game helped Manchester City secure a thumping 6-3 derby win on Sunday.

The Norwegian – captained by over 5.6 million FPL managers – didn’t stop there, however, adding a pair of assists and maximum bonus, with his 23-point haul the highest by any player in a Gameweek so far this season, beating the 22 of Roberto Firmino (£7.9m) v Bournemouth.

“I say it many times and I will say again – what Erling is doing he did in Norway, Austria and Germany. The quality we have alongside him helps him score, but what he is doing I didn’t teach him. He has incredible instincts. It comes from his mum and dad. He was born with that.

What I like was in the last period of the game, he was involved. I want him to be involved. He became a player to score goals, but I want him in contact with the ball. I like him being part of those situations. But of course, he has to put the ball in the net, and he is a fantastic striker.” – Pep Guardiola on Erling Haaland

While Kevin De Bruyne (£12.3m), Phil Foden (£8.0m) and Jack Grealish (£6.8m) were withdrawn after 75 minutes, with the points already in the bag, Haaland lasted the full 90 for the third successive league outing.

However, Pep Guardiola did say he would rest his number nine, but only when the time is right.

For FPL managers, that would ideally be on Wednesday, for City’s UEFA Champions League clash with FC Copenhagen.

“He will take a break. There will be games he is not going to play. We are lucky, last season he could not play many games in a row – here we have incredible physios and thanks to them, he can play every 90 minutes. They are so important – with their hands, they allow players to play.” – Pep Guardiola on Erling Haaland

Foden, meanwhile, scored his first treble for City and is now up to third in the midfielder standings, just two points behind De Bruyne. He’s also registered 14 shots in the box – only Haaland has more among teammates – and has started each of City’s eight league fixtures in 2022/23.

“Phil in reality, is still a young lad, but he played important games in the last years with us. Not just the quality he has, you see how he runs, how he presses, the intensity he does it. Last season he played many games as a striker, at the end he will be play as an attacking midfielder. Close to the box he has incredible sense.” – Pep Guardiola on Phil Foden

It’s worth noting that the front three of Foden, Grealish and Haaland have now started three of the last four matches for City, against Sevilla, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and now, Man Utd.

In those fixtures, the Citizens have scored a whopping 13 goals, of which the trio have netted 12.

“It works well for today but we have Riyad [Mahrez], we’re waiting for him to come back to his best. There are many games. The next game against Copenhagen we are going to rotate the team. Kalvin [Phillips] is injured for a long time, Rodri I don’t know when he comes back, he has a calf problem.” – Pep Guardiola

At the back, Aymeric Laporte’s £5.8m) return after 75 minutes is important, given that John Stones (£5.4m) and Rodri (£5.8m) are both injured, while Kyle Walker (£5.0m) was also forced off in the first-half.

Nathan Ake (£5.0m) and Manuel Akanji (£5.0m), meanwhile, were surprisingly preferred to Ruben Dias (£6.0m) at centre-back, with the Portuguese an unused substitute.

As for Man Utd, they will want to forget this result, but there were a couple of positive performances by Antony (£7.5m) and Anthony Martial (£6.9m).

The former has now scored in back-to-back Premier League matches, while Martial’s brace from the bench means that he has registered three attacking returns in just 76 minutes of Premier League action this season.

As a result, the Frenchman will be pushing for a start in Gameweek 10, when Man Utd meet Everton at Goodison Park.

“He [Anthony Martial] had a really good pre-season and I’m happy for him that he scored the goals. And also for Antony that he scored a goal [too]. And we had some more opportunities which we created. But in this moment I cannot express for the outside world the positives. We are highly disappointed for this result and that has to be the tone for this Sunday. We have to accept that but our performance is unacceptable.” – Erik ten Hag

Manchester City XI: Ederson; Walker (Gomez 41), Akanji, Ake, Cancelo; Gundogan (Laporte 75), De Bruyne (Alvarez 75), Bernardo; Foden (Mahrez 75), Grealish (Palmer 75), Haaland

Manchester United XI: de Gea; Dalot, Varane (Lindelof 40), Martinez, Malacia (Shaw 45); McTominay (Casemiro 59), Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Sancho (Fred 70); Rashford (Martial 59)

LEEDS UNITED 0-0 ASTON VILLA

10-man Leeds United held on to draw 0-0 with Aston Villa in a low-quality and often ill-tempered clash at Elland Road.

The main talking point from an FPL perspective was Luis Sinisterra’s (£6.5m) red card.

The Colombian went into the contest full of confidence after three goals on international duty but was handed his marching orders in the second-half after receiving two yellow cards. As a result, he will now sit out Gameweek 10, when Leeds United travel to Selhurst Park.

“Obviously going a man down wasn’t ideal. We worked on some ‘man down’ tactics in the time we had in the last four weeks and I think it was valuable. We started with four at the back and felt we were maybe giving away too much at the back post and on the wide spaces so switched to a 5-3-1. I thought the team were pretty clear with what we wanted in the match and then we fought like hell. What we know about our team, our club, is that we fight like lions. Even when our backs our down we’ll give everything we have and you saw that mentality today. In the first half I think if we’re a little more assertive in the match then we can find a way to maybe take a lead in the match. But overall it’s a good clean sheet and a good result.” – Jesse Marsch

On a more positive note, Rodrigo (£6.3m) did at least return from injury, lasting 68 minutes, before he was replaced by Patrick Bamford (£7.3m).

Both sides had chances to win it with Illan Meslier (£4.5m) the busier of the two ‘keepers, saving from Ollie Watkins (£7.2m) and Philippe Coutinho (£6.7m).

However, they suffered from a lack of quality in the final-third, a theme that has been apparent for Villa throughout the season so far.

Indeed, Steven Gerrard’s side have scored just six goals in eight league matches in 2022/23 – only West Ham United and Wolves have netted fewer.

“I’m scratching my head and I’m frustrated and I’m sure my attacking players will be as well because we created more than enough to win this match. We came here to frustrate Leeds and maybe we would have taken the point before the game but we could have had three. It wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t question my attacking players and I need more quality. We have had 19 shots on goal and 12 inside the area so we need to be better. Leeds defended well and dug in and you would expect that but we created more than enough and it was that last bit that was missing. If we had found that we would have been happy.

At times Leeds wanted to go to war and we did that. We frustrated Leeds and the crowd. When our moments came we got the ball into the right areas and to the people we wanted to but it didn’t happen. We need more goals. We need our attacking players to step forward and be more ruthless. That tally [six goals so far] is not enough at this stage of the season and we know where we want to go. We keep working and putting the sessions on and rehearsing the moments that will come their way. We have improved slightly defensively and we need to continue that but we need to keep creating these moments and hopefully our players will gobble them up. It feels like we dropped two points today and we missed an opportunity to take two more points and move into the middle of the league.” – Steven Gerrard

Villa also have growing problems at the back, with Ludwig Augustinsson (£4.3m) joining Diego Carlos (£4.8m), Matty Cash (£4.6m), Lucas Digne (£4.7m) and Boubacar Kamara (£4.9m) on the sidelines.

The reserve left-back will now be sent for a scan on his hamstring, with Gerrard saying “It doesn’t look good“.

Leeds United XI: Meslier; Kristensen (Ayling 68), Koch, Cooper, Struijk; Adams, Roca (Firpo 58); Harrison (Summerville 79), Aaronson (Klich 79), Sinisterra; Rodrigo (Bamford 68)

Aston Villa XI: Martinez; Young, Konsa, Mings, Augustinsson; Luiz, Ramsey (Ings 83), McGinn; Bailey (Buendia 64), Coutinho, Watkins

Haaland Foden

Do we reckon Coufal gets his place back in the West Ham side? He played 2 x 90 mins for the Czech Republic during the international break so I'm guessing that's why he sat the last game out. Though I think Fredericks did well...?

I think he's first choice when he's not playing internationally in close proximity

I'm concerned as an owner that he didn't play and they still managed a cleanie. Think he's still first choice as you say, though...

Erm... Kehrer played right back mate and it's worth noting that's where he played for Germany vs England and he's known for being able to play either full-back position.

As a West Ham fan, I like Coufal but I feel there is something lacking with him. Would remain concerned, especially given the clean sheet (albeit not much of an achievement given it was Wolves). Would monitor Thursday's game.

    Cancelo--James--Trippier
    KDB--Martinelli--Maddison--Almiron

      What's your plan for GW12?

I have roughly the same team (Bailey for Almiron and Toney for Jesus), but I'll be starting TAA instead of Bailey.

Initially I wanted to do KDB > Zaha and Bailey > Sterling, now thinking about KDB > Zaha and Mirtrovic > Auba for 2 game punt then WC in GW13.

The problem is KDB is good against big teams, and City just unstoppable at the moment, so might just save 2 FTs for GW12.

      1. DycheDycheBaby

Yes I wouldn't get rid of KDB now as I think they could tear Liverpool apart. Save 2 FTs for GW12 and see what the feeling is like then. Maybe Cancelo and Jesus out and get them back on wildcard. Auba could be a good punt though.

Isak falling again is dumb. There's no reason why he shouldn't have been red flagged. Howe said he wouldn't play this weekend, we knew he wouldn't play yet they kept the 25% chance on him.

Whether currently first choice or not I don't think it's worth the risk at the moment, you want a 100% nailed keeper to be able to have as a cheap a bench keeper as you can get, unless rotating two keepers.

I wouldn't even go near Guiata at Palace looking at the back up keepers who could come in at some point

Before they under-priced everyone this season and dependent on him getting the ~400pts he's currently on target for (lol) I would have said 15/16.

They could do what they did with Wayne Gretzky, split him into two players, one for goals and one for assists. Could make him one player for hattricks and one for other points. Or one for Home v Away. How would you split him? Make him uncaptain-able?

Making him uncaptainable is a good shout. At the moment he's gonna be 200% EO from here on in (GW12 excepted) and that breaks the game.

That's a cool article, thanks. However it applies less for FPL given the format Inn Fantasy NFL was Draft, where only the first pick would get Gretzky.

In FPL (at least the non-draft version) everyone has the same possibility of having Haaland.

Definitely makes teams & captaincy more predictable. IMO they should just price him higher.

If you ban captaincy on Haaland people will still flock to the next-best captaincy option (e.g. Mo) & teams will probably look even more similar as a result...

Maybe I'm missing something, maybe I just don't understand statistics in a deeper sense but everyone saying Haaland perma cap has ruined the game, well you're kind of, wrong, in my opinion.

    If everyone owned Haaland and perma captained him a few things happen/could happen;

    1) It just becomes who can pick the best 10 players each week (so basically the same, some will have benefitted him by having him earlier in the season, thus have more funds available than those buying later at the inflated price.
    2) People who want the C chip removed finally get their wish and we basically get to trial it for a season (because we're all captaining Haaland right?)
    3) When/if he is eventually benched vice captain choice is important.
    4) Players who don't captain Haaland are rewarded in the weeks he gets out scored. In 44% of his games this season he hasn't scored double digits.

Welcome to points three and four.

He's returned points every GW yes, but let's not get it twisted. He hasn't banged three a game every week (like people are making out), GW2 he didn't score and GWs 3, 6 & 8 he only got one. As I mentioned, in 44% of his games (just shy of half) he hasn't even returned double digits.

FWIW, I like the captain chip and I captained him every week except GW1 (went for Son, as I'm a naive West Ham fan and I didn't think he'd [Haaland] start the opening game if being honest). In GW2 I had 3 players in my team out score him. GW3 I had 3 players match or out score him. GW6 he was my highest returner (I've had an awful start to the season). Finally GW8 I had 3 players in my team match or out score him.

People wouldn't be crying if Liverpool were actually doing the business this year and Trent, Robbo & Salah were returning also. People wouldn't be crying if Chelsea actually showed up and played like the team they should. People wouldn't be crying if Arsenal weren't sharing their goals amongst them and Jesus was constantly banging them all in.

Honestly people find something to whine about no matter what, actual reason behind is solely they expected more points than what their team got or better rank. And just like you said just play it like a 10 player game, nothing new. People here have been playing 6/7 player game already for seasons...

Perma captaining Haaland is just a safety choice. People will continue doing it for maintain rank, and go for differential captain pick in an attempt to climb up. Again nothing new, it has been similar with Salah in recent years. And exactly like you said, if Liverpool were doing what they have been doing before, Salah would easily be contesting the captain pick *more*, same goes for Son/Kane/CR etc. So basically other premiums not/under performing.

Haaland just became a target man in a team which has already been doing really well, and in previous years it was City who had goals spread throughout the team.

It doesn't matter if he really got double digits or not, it's simply that with form and consistency of all players at the moment, Haaland is the obvious option. And it seems it doesn't even matter what fixture it is for any team.

I think it's flawed to think that 44/50% double digit hauls is not enough to captain him. At least you have this solid 50% chance of getting 20+ points any game than going for another player. And when you think about this another player you wouldn't be going for it because of % chance of double digit, it simply isn't quantifiable and cannot be compared. That's where differential picks come in, and brings the game back to risk/reward. (I have PTSD from captaining Bowen a few times and I'm not even a West Ham fan.)

#4 good luck to those cats. Only worked out for me in one gw so far, when Harry kane played lei.

When to use the triple cap on him will be tricky too. Wish I'd known man utd would be his day.

I think the absolute number of people who have capped haaland from GW1 has got to be quite small. We're all in various stages of catching up to this beast.

The people who are moaning about him breaking the game are still captaining salah.

Stubbornness is the other side of patience I guess

I mean he hasn't hit double digits in half of his games, so it's not even that dominant from him so far. Curious who you captained in the other three weeks that they didn't out score him?

Agreed re: Salah. If he was still scoring freely they wouldn't be crying as much.

Exactly it was the same when Ronaldo looked unbeatable in FPL before moved to Real. Many on here have short memories.

I find it curious that people were not saying Salah 'broke the game' when he was going well. Plus he got more points for a goal and clean sheet!
There will defintely be times where Haaland loses form/is unlucky/rested/injured. The key is to know when to jump off and on.
I noticed some die hard man united fans Granville and Andy LTFPL both captained Salah! I am not sure whether it was nostalgia or because they support the red devils and could not face captaining Haaland against their own team.

Yeah, see I usually start the players who play West Ham. If we win, I'm happy from the game, if we lose, hopefully the players I started score and I'm happy from an FPL perspective. Gotta hedge ya bets!

CORRECTION: I'm on auto pilot it's 4am. He has actually only played 8 games. So 50% of his games he hasn't returned double digits! Strengthening my point even more.

I used the phrase 'broke the game' above, and I'm a no-Salah Haaland perma-capper. I do accept Zenith's arguments and agree that the phrase is overstated, but let's put facts aside for a moment and indulge my feelings 😉

I went to a rowdy sports bar yesterday to watch the game. I was delirious to see my captain score a hat-trick, 2 assists and full baps. I got home, logged into liveFPL only to discover that with his 46 points, I'd FALLEN 200K. I mean, never mind how much further non-H cappers fell; that just doesn't feel right!
Yes, you'll say it just shows how cr4p the rest of my squad must be, I accept that. But even so ....

Mate, I'm 84 points all out, and 46 of them (54%) were all Haaland. Thing is though, same happened with Salah in previous seasons if you didn't captain him. Difference is, if you didn't captain Salah last year you might've gone Son, or someone who scored but just a little less than what Salah would've. Last year we'd have licked our lips at LIV v FUL, BOU, NEW, EVE, BHA but this year they just haven't done the business so the pain hurts more. It's no different to any other season.

FWIW I'm still outside the top 1M and I've captained Haaland every week except for GW1...

I had a green arrow on 31 points on Saturday but with Haaland, King Kev and Cancelo a stronger green on Sunday.

Obviously those with Foden were smashing 100 points in some cases. He had 798k owners in the 10 million plus.

          That's your answer there.

Don't pinpoint Haaland, Foden owners turned you over!

      People have very short memories.

For the last 2-3 seasons Salah has been ‘perma’ captain. There will be doubles rotations injuries etc when we don’t captain haaland and it’s all part of the game.

The previous seasons I didn’t captain Salah early parts of the seasons, leading to me chasing and punting on captains even more to my detriment.

Doesn’t mean the games boring just means I made poor decisions.

Re point 4. This week looked like one of those occasions. Manu results vs liv and ars hinted at a 2 1 or 3 1 kindof score, where maybe Haaland scores or braces in a 7 to 13 points range

Salah looked like a potential brace

And the rest is history. Always potential for Haaland to return a massive haul in any game. That's the massive risk

The same has applied to Salah perma-cap last three seasons though? I think there was a week I captained Son vs someone like Norwich and he blanked and Salah got two vs City or something like that (probably not accurate but example). Just this year, nobody is really competing with Haaland.

        1. Andy_Social

Salah never scored 3 hat-tricks in a row though. I too went on a perma-capping Salah spree last season, but even before he lost his form, he was never anything like as consistent as Haaland is right now.

Yeah I get that but Haaland is a different animal.

Salah missed plenty of chances. Hence issues with bps.

Haaland won't, all served up to him on a plate on a conveyor belt by the most creative team in Europe Literally almost expect a hat trick per game, it's possible.

    2FT and 0.7itb
Really want to fit James in my team.

4 ways i can get him in, through Bowen, Son, Dias or Mitrovic.

    Reasons not to:
Dont want to lose Son especially against brighton.
Foresee Dias keeping a cleansheet against southampton
