We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Brentford v Brighton and Hove Albion in our Scout Notes summary.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL and our own Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

Ivan Toney (£7.3m) marked his 100th appearance for Brentford with a brace of goals against Brighton in Friday’s Gameweek 11 opener.

The 26-year-old, who is pushing for a place in England’s World Cup squad, is now on eight Premier League goals this season, only behind Erling Haaland (£12.2m, 15) and level with Harry Kane (£11.4m).

It’s no fluke, either: Toney has been presented with 11 big chances this term, two more than Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Kane, albeit having played one additional match.

Above: Toney ranks second among all players for big chances in 2022/23, with 11

His second against Brighton, a 64th-minute penalty he won himself, means he has remarkably scored all 20 spot-kicks he has taken for Brentford, including eight in the Premier League.

However, Toney did receive his fourth booking of the season late on, meaning he will now have to last until early-January without another caution if he is to avoid a one-match ban.

“I think he’s getting closer and closer [to being alongside world-class strikers], that’s for sure. I think you can see that his link-up play is so good, he can read the game very well. His technical ability to either flick or hold or set the ball is very good.

I always say that if you want to create a top scorer then they need to be technically very good so the way he can connect with the ball, left-foot, right-foot, the free-kick against Leeds, the chip, he’s so good technically. He’s just got that character about him as well.

He’s one of the big leaders without a doubt. I have four captains and Ivan is a big driver also on the pitch, big demands to himself and his teammates but in that perfect balance where he’s very competitive but with a big smile. Of course a lot of banter and joking but caring about his teammates.” – Thomas Frank on Ivan Toney

Brentford’s secondary hero behind Toney was undoubtedly David Raya (£4.5m), who made fine saves to deny Danny Welbeck (£6.5m), Joel Veltman (£4.6m) and Solly March (£5.0m), resulting in his first double-figure haul of the campaign.

The Spanish shot-stopper is now up to 39 saves for the season, at least five more than any other FPL ‘keeper.

Above: Raya ranks first among all goalkeepers for saves and save points in 2022/23, with 39 and 11 respectively

The breakthrough for Thomas Frank’s side came after a period of control for Brighton, with Welbeck – who is still searching for his first league goal of 2022/23 – particularly wasteful.

They actually ended the night with more shots (21/7), possession (72%) and xG (1.79/1.56) than Brentford, but were made to pay for some poor finishing, a familiar theme for the The Seagulls in recent times

Roberto De Zerbi named the same starting XI for the third match in a row but showed the same kind of tactical flexibility as his predecessor by setting up in a back four formation, rather than the 3-4-2-1 he had used against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

A half-time switch saw Kaoru Mitoma (£4.9m) introduced for Pervis Estupinan (£4.5m), with the Japanese international lining up on the right-wing, which in turn, saw Solly March (£5.0m) shift to left-back.

Elsewhere, Leandro Trossard (£6.8m) and Pascal Gross (£5.9m), owned by 16.2% and 19.6% of FPL managers respectively, both underwhelmed and were withdrawn after 68 minutes.

Tonight’s loss means De Zerbi is still waiting for his first win at Brighton, with Nottingham Forest up next at the Amex on Tuesday.

“I thought we played a good game but if you want to win you have to score. It is difficult to explain the result and for a coach it’s difficult for me to talk about playing a good game when we lost 2-0. We had a lot of potential chances and [more than] 20 shots on the goal but we didn’t score. The goalkeeper for Brentford was fantastic.

Maybe that is our problem because against Tottenham we had a lot of shots but didn’t score, we couldn’t find the last pass or final cross when we needed it. The second goal was important but even then I felt that if we could score one goal it would open the game up.

We are not happy of course because we lost but on Sunday we start preparing for another game on Tuesday against Nottingham [Forest]. We will see the condition of the players and some may be tired but there aren’t any other problems.” – Roberto De Zerbi

Brentford XI: Raya; Ajer, Pinnock, Mee, Henry (Ghoddos 87); Janelt, Onyeka (Baptiste 71), Jensen (Dasilva 80); Mbeumo (Canos 80), Wissa (Roerslev 71), Toney

Brighton and Hove Albion XI: Sanchez; Veltman, Webster, Dunk, Estupinan (Mitoma 45); March, Mac Allister, Caicedo, Trossard (Undav 68); Gross (Lallana 68), Welbeck

Is Danny Welbeck a decent punt for GW12 for those who will WC13?

For WC13 yeah although not sure he's decent as he's not a good finisher ...

0G 4A all season so doesn't seem likely to explode, even though it is Forest. He's not really been much of a finisher this season even if he has had some good chances.

Was thinking just because it's Forest. Not many striker punts scream out in GW12

I think so, it's exactly as upu called it, a "punt", could score 2 or blank, but if WCing in 13 then not the biggest risk

Actually I do prefer this, still think Welbeck isn't as bad as everyone is saying though, maybe I haven't seen enough of him but he sames to get in good positions and get a decent amount of shots

In fairness, just before they score points is the perfect time to buy them. It's not the most terrible 1 GW punt. The arguement can go both ways.

I had and captained against Leicester where Brighton scored 5. He scraped 1 assist from winning a free kick that was scored, and through all the highlights it looked like Caicedo was further up the pitch than him during most attacks. Different manager now of course but I just wouldn't go there

    Sanchez - Ward
    Trippier - Perisic - Neco - (James - Cancelo)
    Martinelli - Zaha - Andreas - (Foden - Colback)
    Kane - (Haaland - Jesus)

    Currently fielding 7 players, 2FT, 2.2 itb.

    A) James, Cancelo, Foden, Jesus -> Guehi, Schar, Salah, Aubameyang (-8) then WC13

    B) Cancelo + Foden -> Guehi + Salah (free), play 9 GW12, then WC13

    C) James + Colback -> Dier + Trossard (free), play 9 GW12, and save WC (not sure for when)

    D) WC now for GW12

The players in the transfers can be changed but trying to see what the best general plan is.

What's people thought so far on WC strategy after some injuries to key players etc. Who's got the better combined points & prospects towards world cup (in general, I know it's team specific) between early WC-er (WC8/9) and late WC-er (GW13)?

    1. agueroooooney
      • 11 Years
      3 years, 5 months ago

Still have the WC and have injuries so I don't even know whether to WC12, 13 or even just field 9 for the blank, get rid of the injuries and save the WC.

WC13 was meant to be a smooth operation but is turning out anything but that for me.

I’m on WC13 but think injuries to TAA, James, Diaz, Mitro have diminished my ability to attack GW13 and a lot of the WC8/9 crew won’t be too different by 13. So I think the earlier WC looks like the winner

    3. bench boost for every gamew…

I am in the really bad start campaign, so wc was done in gw5 or 6 i think.
I have had some climb but with all the injuries creeping up, i think wc in 11 actually might be the best.
      Team dependent as you say.
Took a minus 8 now, which points wise will not be good, but it had to be done, or i would be lagging one or two moves behind all through to the WC. I have done this before and sometimes it does help you longer term.

    Pope
    Trippier Doherty Guehi Patterson*
    KDB* Maddison Zaha Andreas
    Toney Mitrovic

    (Overdone Haaland Cancelo Martinelli)
    2 FTs & 2.0m

Thinking of doing KDB to Salah(c) with 1 FT.

Is it worth using the 2nd FT to get a BHA def in for Patterson?

Or save 2nd Ft and do Zaha & Maddison to Foden & Saka for free in GW13?

    Appreciate your thoughts! 🙂

    Regarding Jesus

I think Nketiah playing the full 90 is positive for Jesus. If he was out Nketiah would be playing 3 games in a week.

If Jesus is a fitness concern, he's a fitness concern. It's as simple-as.

Nketiah can play up-top and so can Martinelli. Sub on Jesus for a few mins if needed.

Not saying he won't start but won't be risked if it's not a risk worth taking.

Quick q my daughter has Haaland, Dias, James, Martinelli, Jesus all out and Mirovic, Bailey and Williams iffy this week. Free hit GW12, wildcard GW13 the best move? I think so.

Been looking into this and I don’t think there’s much benefit to the FH in 12.

For me it’s either accept 12 as a dud or WC12. I was surprised how much commonality between GW12 and 13 WC drafts.

    3. Nate(U)dog(ie)

Free hit is only really useful in this scenario if you want to keep all of those players for GW13 onwards and are stuck next week. Using that followed by WC seems like overkill as if you want all of those players then you won't be making many changes, and if you don't want them then she should just WC this week in my opinion. I think FH can be avoided and just WC now

Unsure whether to WC12 or 13 as team has been injury ravaged.

I have 4 sure starters, 3 likely starters and Neco.

    A. Play WC
    B. Play 10 for -4

Main difference in WC drafts is Foden, Saka and Jesus (13) v Zaha, Maddison and Darwin (12).

Starting to think I should just play it but does take away the benefits of getting 3 Arsenal and 3 City.

If you only have 4 certain starters Id wc now with 3 City/Arsenal on the bench, then have a plan to bring in 2 more for a hit for 13

In similar position and leaning towards limping on to GW13. If I do WC this week I'd still load up with 5 City/Ars though, and play a strong 9 in GW12 (currently I'm looking at '10' for -4, but two of those are still Neco and Bailey!). Good luck.

Repost from a reply to a similar question. But here's my thoughts on it (as someone who has pulled the trigger this week, so I'm a little biased)

This 3 Arsenal/3 City on GW13 WC to get the "ideal" team is being blown out of proportion imo. There are other teams in the league. If it were a normal season where the WC would be getting you through to GW30ish, then fair enough. But given you can reset your team in 4 weeks anyway, I don't see why you would essentially write off a gameweek (especially if planning to take hits).

Huge opportunity to field a strong XI this week when most are taking hits and fielding players like Neco Williams. Hell, even buy some Liverpool players.

Just stick Martinelli, Haaland and maybe Cancelo on the bench and you're golden. No harm in booking in a transfer in this situation either to get Foden/Jesus/Saka in (just think of it as the -4 you would have taken this week if it helps).

Hard to argue against that. He's keeping pace with Kane who costs 4.1m more and it's not as if he's a flash in the pan. He's also got a 60% success rate which would consider him captaincy material given the right set of circumstances.

Think I’d just stick it out and focus on the attacking positions for a -4.

Picking a defender atm is difficult so don’t think it’s the end of the world if you end up just playing 10 with Neco.
