Erling Haaland (£12.1m) returns to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) captaincy conversation in Gameweek 13, but the decision over who to hand the armband to isn’t entirely clear-cut with a range of options from Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal rivalling the Norwegian.

As usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Erling Haaland dominates the captain poll, with almost two-thirds of the total votes cast by users at the time of writing.

No other player has garnered more than 21% of votes at this stage, with Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) currently in second place, backed by around one in five of our users.

Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) occupies third place with a little under 4% of the vote, followed by Kevin De Bruyne (£12.3m) a mite further back.

THE MAIN CANDIDATES

ERLING HAALAND/PHIL FODEN

Erling Haaland makes a welcome return to the captaincy debate following Manchester City’s Blank Gameweek 12, in which a host of alternative options failed their armband auditions.

The status quo remains for the best fantasy asset in the division – and Erling Haaland continues to produce gold-standard numbers.

The Norwegian leads the division for shots inside the box (24), big chances (eight), and shots on target (16) over the last six matches.

The all-important expected data confirms Haaland’s dominance, ranking best for expected goals (xG) and expected goal involvement (xGI) over the last six matches, with 4.90 and 6.14 respectively.

Above: Erling Haaland leads the division for shots inside the box (24), big chances (8), and shots on target (16) over the last six matches

Phil Foden (£8.3m) has been snapped up by 300,000+ FPL managers before Manchester City host Brighton in a hugely enticing home fixture, the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 13.

Foden has scored six goals and supplied four assists this season and, except for his strike against Wolverhampton Wanderers in Gameweek 8, all his returns have arrived at the Etihad Stadium.

While understandably Erling Haaland sets the pace as far as City’s underlying goal threat numbers are concerned, Foden is no slouch.

Among City teammates over the last six matches, Foden plays understudy to only Haaland for shots inside the box (13), big chances (three), and shots on target (nine).

Guardiola’s charges host De Zerbi’s Brighton in Gameweek 13, with the match of playstyles suggesting an open high scoring encounter.

Analysing the Seagulls at a team level, over the last six matches Brighton have registered a single clean sheet, against Nottingham Forest in Gameweek 12.

However, the underlying defensive numbers for Brighton remain strong: the Seagulls rank in the top four over the last six matches for shots on target against (19) and expected goals conceded (xGC), with 5.98.

As for the draft punt, Olise again.

    Have Pope in goal.

    Who to start:
    Tripper (Spurs away)
Emerson (Bournemouth Home - assume will start as didn't play midweek)
Jonny (Leicester Home - assume will start as didn't play midweek)

Anyone against this?... i need an extra 0.1mil next week for Bailey to Saka with FT and it also takes care of the doherty problem (likely royal will start after 3 games out this week or next week ). Zouma will be almost a lock for cleansheet this week and will bench then next week for Schar

    Planned moves
    Kane to Darwin
    Doherty to Zouma (-4)

    Next week
    Bailey to Saka with FT

    This week playing
    Ederson
    Cancelo Trippier Zouma
    Salah Zaha Andreas Martinelli
    Haaland Mitro Darwin
    Ward Schar Neco Bailey

    Yes?

    Guaita
    James - Cancelo - Trippier - Zouma
    KDB - Tross - Zaha - Bowen
    Haaland - Mitro

    Ward - Solanke - Andreas - Dalot

    Kepa, Ward
    xxxxxxxx, Cancelo, Trippier, xxxxxxx. (Patterson)
    xxxxxxx, Foden, Martinelli, xxxxxx, (Andreas)
    Haaland, xxxxxx, xxxxxxx

    A) TAA, Perisic, Salah, Mitro (Archer)
    B) Zouma, Zaha, Kane, Darwin (Guehi)
    C) VVD, Zaha, Kane, Mitro (Zouma)

I was set on A but with TAA, Perisic playing on Wednesday, and Saka flagged and a weak bench I'm having second thoughts.

A with Jesus and Murphy over Saka and Archer is also an option.

Anyone else have really rubbish weeks by trying to deal with the city and arsenal blank? I've been flying high all season just keeping it simple with City/Arsenal players and then started to get rid and then benched them last week and had GW ranks of 5 million and 7 million.

Thankfully I'm on a wildcard so just getting them all back in again but still. All the planning on paper for the blank seemed to just fall apart, mainly due to Mitrovic and Zaha scoring when so many people around me have one or both of them.

This sort of debate always happens when there is a blank GW or DGW. As always, I suspect some did well out of their strategy (whichever it was) and some did badly - it's very difficult to claim victory. If there was a perfect strategy for blank GWs, everyone would do it every time. As with a lot of things FPL, a lot of it is pure luck.

Oh, absolutely. I often say on here how much luck is involved in FPL. I've had huge amounts of luck so far to get me into the top 10k.

My post is about the blank putting a spanner in the works of the luck I've had so far.

I think you're overstating your issues a little (looking at your linked team).

You were at ~4k (GW10) and have dropped to ~36k. Only ~25 point gap between the two spots now.

"Dealing with Arsenal/City players" and benching them (most people benched 3 if they could, you kept 1 more) wasn't really your issue - it was your transfers.

You've brought in Trossard & Sanchez (GW11), then Salah & Solanke (GW12). I did the same for 12.

Basically - if you made a different GW11 transfer (Mount? Most other keepers?) you'd be in a similar spot.

      1. fusen
        • 14 Years

My transfers were literally due to me 'dealing with the City/Arsenal blank'. If the blank didn't happen I wouldn't have needed to make the transfers.

So? Literally everyone had to deal with the blank.

Your alternative, and everyone else's was to keep those players. If you'd done that you'd have even less points since Diaz didn't play GW11/12, and Ederson got 2 points in GW11 and blanked in GW12.

Heck, even Ward would those two weeks would have gained you 15 (- Sanchez's 3), so 12. You wouldn't have had to take the hit for GW12 (+4).

... and say for example you bought Eze over Zaha, or Almiron (more unlikely I know, but if you wanted to hold Ederson) you'd be 13 points better off.

Not 'blaming you' but you can't solely blame the blanks since every person had to deal with them. You need to identify its the choices you made when making the transfers that just didn't work out.

If Sanchez key another CS, or Trossard did well in GW11 we wouldn't be having this conversation.

            and 13 - 5 for Trossard, so 8.

            (+8) + (+8) + (+4, hit) = 20.
You'd be close to 4k again.

You appear to be pointing out exactly what I was asking about -

"Anyone else have really rubbish weeks by trying to deal with the city and arsenal blank?"

My transfers obviously didn't do well, as I ended up with multiple million gameweek ranks. My post was asking if anyone else equally did badly on them.

(paraphrasing) "If I transferred in players who scored more points then I would have done better" well, obviously?

Mount might have been too much but look at what you could have had:

        Trossard + Sanchez:
        6.8m + 4.7m = 11.5m

        Zaha + Kepa:
        7.4m + 4.4m = 11.8m
(You have 0.2m ITB, so 11.6m)

Might be 0.1m or so out due to price you bought Trossard, and perhaps that 0.1m is important.

(Could have been made by selling Luiz Diaz on 10th Oct, given he had that big injury 1 day prior but was early week before deadline so understand)

    Ward
    Saliba cancelo trippier
    Kdb zaha martinelli Andreas

If you have the WC, when else would you use it - FH style in gw 16?

I would then upgrade GK, swap out saliba for someone who isn't on 4YC and consider Nunez as a punt for Toney (aslo 4YC) if you have the money...

      True, thanks.

Goalkeeper upgrade and others can happen if I downgrade Kane too, then can change goalkeeper, bring in Nunez and change Saliba too. Then makes it worth it.

Otherwise yeah.. crazy free hit 16

I'm just not convinced that crazy free hit in 16 makes sense (no doubles to target etc) and fundamentally will probably want arsenal, city and liverpool players who you would have on WC...

TV and entry price will be key, but I think you can do KDB to Foden, Almiron to Saka, Ward to Kepa, Saliba to White and see if you can afford toney to nunez... if not, keep toney!

Thoughts on Dalot for GW14-16? Or would you rather go with someone like White?

      Both good options

Choosing Ben White is like going into an Indian restaurant and ordering just a single popadom. Why would you do that?

Haha great analogy however i think White is a good pick

Salah surely, surely, surely HAS to perform over the next two gameweeks...

    Come on man.

      Salah (nfo) - 2
      Salah (LEE) - 3

      Calling it now

Maybe unfairly on Salah, if he just gets an assist in each game, for example, I reckon most would consider that a bit of a failure. So 'to perform', most are expecting at least a goal in each IMO

He is going to run riot tomorrow playing centrally with Darwin

What makes you think that? Unless he gets a penalty or let through one on one several times in a game I don't see him scoring

Haaland cap all the way! It is going to be too risky to go without. Some have sold him aswell and now have to try get him back...

    Sorry, bottomed.

    Pope
    Trip-Castagne-Cancelo-Dier
    Salah-Zaha-Marti
    Toney-Haaland-Mitro
    (Ward, Andreas, Trossard, Dunk)

Had to WC last week unfortunately. I want Darwin but realistically front 3 is ok. Is the following worth it

    Tross + Dier > Foden + White (-4)

    Would probably then play 3-4-3.

    Thoughts?
