Our team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors offer their Fantasy Premier League (FPL) insight, tips, team reveals and advice throughout the season, with only Premium Members able to access every single article they write.

Here, former FPL champion Simon March highlights the upside of rolling a transfer.

FPL team reveal: Why I've picked Vardy over Haaland and Kane

If somebody were to ask me for the one key piece of FPL advice that I’d elevate above all others, it would always be this: carry the free transfer whenever possible.

I’m convinced that this practice, and the will to consistently execute it throughout a season, offers some of the most profound advantages available for managers within the game. However, as we home in on Gameweek 16, this practice might be more relevant and significant than ever.

As it stands, every manager can theoretically go into Gameweek 16 with two free transfers and this article will focus on some reasons why they should and on why it is such a significant tactic overall.

Why should managers carry the free transfer?

FPL Gameweek 12 tips: Best players to sign, captains, predicted line-ups + team reveals

The first reason why managers should aim, wherever possible, to carry the free transfer is fairly simple: two is better than one. However, when it comes to transfers, being able to make two transfers in one Gameweek is exponentially better than making just one per Gameweek.

Firstly, unless you happen to have a lot of money in the bank, your options for a single transfer are limited to players of the same or lower price. This automatically limits your options and potentially forces you to back suboptimal players due to a lack of alternative options.

Using only one transfer also will not allow you to shift funds between player categories, for example by moving funds from defence into attack. As a result, repeatedly using a single transfer brings a high risk of stagnation within your squad, forcing you to mine sub-par assets from dwindling options within a declining bracket, instead of taking advantage of shifting dynamics and efficiently and efficiently moving onto new opportunities.

Therefore not only does using two transfers at a time grant you more options, it avoids the long-term rot we can instigate when our options are forcibly narrowed.

Carrying the transfer promotes good practices

FPL Gameweek 13: Saturday’s goals, assists, bonus and statistics 10

If you are consistently making one transfer weekly, you might be taking advantage of shifts and new opportunities in the game (though, for reasons described above, you probably are not, at least not as well as you could be) but you are also likely to be buying into many of the short-term bandwagons that come along. A practice that can easily derail a good season.

Carrying the transfer, on the other hand, negates impulsiveness and promotes patience, forcing managers into a temporary observing state. While this might occasionally lead to a missed opportunity in the short-term, this practice over the long term will more than make up for such instances by helping to root out the player assets who had a good week from the ones who can genuinely deliver consistently. The downside of being slow to acquire a good asset is almost always less damaging than being too quick to acquire a bad one.

Why carrying the transfer is important for Gameweek 16

Going into Gameweek 16 with two free transfers has the potential to offer a big advantage over rival managers and an opportunity to go into the World Cup break on a high.

Obviously, having two free transfers brings all the benefits that I’ve described above but it will also reduce the need or temptation to take a hit, something a lot of managers will do and something that is likely ill-advised given that the hit would need to pay off in Gameweek 16 alone.

Furthermore, Gameweek 16 brings with it a mini-fixture swing with currently popular teams (in FPL terms) such as Newcastle, Chelsea, Leicester, Fulham and Brentford all facing tougher fixtures. Two free transfers provides an opportunity to move away from these assets and re-invest in a couple of ‘one-week punts’, acquiring players from teams with much better fixtures like Crystal Palace, Everton, Liverpool, Man Utd, Spurs, Brighton and West Ham.

Again, for the reasons given above, having two free transfers opens up so many more possibilities for attacking the assets of these teams than just one transfer would. Gameweek 16 is a unique opportunity to back some lesser-owned or high-ceiling assets that you might not have otherwise wanted in your team for the longer term.

In other words, if you can carry a transfer and go into Gameweek 16 with two free transfers available, not only could it pay off exponentially but it will also likely be a lot of fun, too.

Also, I can only make 3 of those moves (due to 3-player limit), and of those three, I would only want to make 1 or 2 😀 A WC for 1 or 2 big-ish changes is not appealing, although of course, I would finetune more.

This is a possibility, but I think I would get more changes out of a WC next week, and I'd want to get rid of all my Arsenal players, among others. I might also triple on Liverpool, and I would like another week to decide if that's a terrible idea or who are the best options.

Also, I might BB in GW16, and the optimal time to plan that would be GW15. I'll take bigger look into WC this week

I don't agree that saving a transfer somehow forces us to be more observant. You can also baselessly argue the opposite, that sitting on 2FTs encourages us to jump on wagons as we have the luxury to rejig and afford more players without the cost of a hit, and we also feel we deserve it after the conscious effort to save it in the first place. I think it's just waffle tbh.

He's right though in that two transfers is better than one in terms of being able to react more optimally to situations. It gives you more choices since you can downgrade in one position and upgrade another.

I don't agree though that you should save that for GW16 though. Just always try to roll if your team allows it and you don't have an obvious fire to put out.

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

No, the optimal move isn't necessarily to save the transfer. Nonsense

          I didn't say that...

I said that having two free transfers allows you to make more optimal decisions.

          1. Deulofail
            • 10 Years
            3 years, 4 months ago

Thats the same thing. If you wait to make a decision, the act of waiting might cost you the optimal move. So you cannot necessarily improve the optimisation (of anything) by saving a FT.

            1. Camzy
              • Fantasy Football Scout Member
              • 15 Years
              3 years, 4 months ago

              It's not the same.

The ability to do Salah + Solanke > Kane + Almiron is not possible without a hit unless you have 2 FTs.

              1. Deulofail
                • 10 Years
                3 years, 4 months ago

Or you can do Salah > KDB with 1FT. Saving the FT doesn't necessarily allow for a more optimal decision. I don't see how you can argue otherwise tbh. I'm moving on, thanks.

It gives you more choices. 'Optimal' is always subjective.

    2. Deulofail
      • 10 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

Likewise, the article says that saving a FT will reduce the temptation to take hits, but I could easily argue that it enhances the temptation through mini WCs, where trio of changes could be more effective than just 2 (with or without a hit).

Different type/style of FPL managers, hits or no hits do not seem relevant if you can make it work and each manager would have various level of appetite towards it

It's probably better to carry a transfer over for gw15 rather than gw16 as most will already have City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, Brighton, Palace, West Ham already.

4 of the 7 teams listed as part of the "mini-fixture swing" face each other, bit of an odd one, not to mention if you're backing the likes of Liverpool, ManUtd or Palace assets wouldn't you already be doing it this week given they have good fixtures now, or Brighton from GW15?

The article also seems to ignore the fact that a free transfer spent before GW16 has more than one week to pay off. Ultimately, this is ALWAYS the calculation/balance you're considering when making a transfer. "Is saving the FT worth it in this instance or not?" Play the game as usual, folks! 😀

The only important thing to note is that there are some decent swings in GW16, that you might want to take advantage of. That's one reason I'm WCing in GW15, and maybe BBing in GW16.

Yeah, transfer in GW 15 can bring benefits in 2 GWs and transfer in GW 16 has only one game

Does anyone else think the arsenal v NF match isn't going to be the trouncing everyone on here is expecting?
I expect arsenal to win but they seemed tired at end of saints match plus Europe mid-week

Forest are improving but Arsenal at home seem to be a different beast. Probably 3-0? Why I'm tempted to get another Arsenal player in this week, I only have Martinelli atm.

I haven't seen all of Forest's recent games, but I've had a look at the stats to see what the defensive improvement looks like. Breaking the fixtures down into GWs 1-9 & 10-13:

      1-9: GC 21 / xGC 14.27
      10-13: GC 2 / xGC 5.33

The big swing in delta, from +6.73 to - 3.33, suggests that variance accounts for a fair amount of the defensive turnaround. Coupled with the fixture swing (AVL wol bha LIV U23s), I think there's reason enough to be skeptical about the idea that they've turned a corner & will be able to restrict Arsenal

Also I think Arsenal being able to rest everyone this week (not the case for PSV last Thursday) should make a difference fatigue-wise

I would like to use this article and lobby for change in the rules for next year.

Allow unlimited transfers to be rolled.

It will be win win for the less engaged managers when they forget the team they can do an overhaul and it will be well received by more engaged managers since they could plan better.

Being able to only have 2 FT is too restricting imo. At least increase it to 3 or 5.

    What everyone thinks about this?

Agree completely. Don't see any downside to it

Yeah, where are the downsides really?

For FPL, the downside is that people won't be coming back to the site as often. However, there's a point at which people give up and never come back after missing out on FTs by not logging on to make changes for a while, so there's a balance to be made.

For game mechanics, I would prefer to be able to save without a limit, but there would still be a big effect on gameplay by upping it to 3 (more variety in teams, I think), which I would have thought keeps about the same number of people engaged while reducing the number of dropouts.

Yeah, this is sound argument so maybe at least up it to 3, 2 FT is too little imo

But wouldn't it be better for those people too? Rather than having burned their FTs, they'd be able to catch up a bit by using up the transfers they'd forgotten to make

FPL want more engagement. Whether it’s a good idea or not doesn’t matter, they won’t want managers barely touching their team for a whole month.

People that are giving up will be revitalizing their squads, so maybe make it 3 or 5?

I'd love to see it upped to 3. Upped to 5 would be too beneficial to a casual who forgets their team and randomly comes back. 3 would be cracking though as you could combine the 3 with a hit or two to basically create a mini-wildcard, which would add another potential strategic option for the engaged manager.

How would it in anyway be beneficial to casuals? The option to save 5FTs would be open to everyone, and casuals would probably benefit the least by becoming even more casual, and less engaged.

Unless you're just enjoying the fact that casual players are burning transfers by failing to log in on time. For me, that is a shame, and makes my victory less rewarding 😉

I think a situation where someone logs back in after a few months and is handed 5 FT is too much reward for what is poor game-play. Of course that the option to strategically build them up would be there for the engaged player, but for me that is outweighed by the "unfair reward" that a completely disengaged manager could potentially gain.

It's all subjective though in terms of how we perceive the advantages of FT and potential strategy, so I guess their will be lots of different perspectives on this sort of thing suggestion.

It will make the game more popular imo. If you forgot your team and now you have 5 transfers you would be excited again. It will increase the number of players playing imo

It's not an advantage over engaged managers though is it, so what's the problem?

To give a player who hasn't logged in for months 5 FT is a massive reward for what is objectively poor game-play, that's the problem.

They have saved 5FTs in that case. That's just the rule. It's fine haha.

Seems like you want to punish people for not dedicating as much of their life to FPL as you.

Nunez or Jesus to replace Solanke? (Would look to keep till the WC)

Nunez. See if Jesus plays tomorrow, but I suspect he might start, which reduces his appeal a little, especially given that Arsenal already look fatigued. He could also pick up a YC in one of the next two PL matches, meaning he is suspended for one of the games. Nunez in general seems a much higher goal threat when he's playing.

You might want to consider other options too like DCL, Scamacca, Wilson, Ings

        • 10 Years

I don’t think Jesus will start, he’s started 3 in a row and was a bit tired/complacent against Southampton. If we lose tomorrow, all we have to do is beat Zurich at home to finish top of the group.

Premier League is more important this season and Forest will try to make it tough on Sunday.

        1. Deulofail
          • 10 Years

We'll see, but I think there are some good reasons to start him. One of them being that he could get a rest soon anyway if suspended. Another being that Arsenal want to secure top spot tomorrow, so they can rest everyone in the final game. (Jesus in undeniably part of the best team, and started against PSV in the last game). Maybe he'll be rested, but I can certainly see him starting, perhaps with Nketiah on the left again, since Martinelli is also still looking a bit tired.

Even if the PL is more important (not sure if Arteta sees it that way necessarily), it is therefore even more important to secure top spot, to avoid playing 2 extra games in EL, which would affect the PL game even more than playing Jesus in this one game!

Thanks! As long as there's no bad news before, I'll likely go with Nunez. Like his underlying numbers and how the team try to feed him, just his minutes risk is annoying. Nice punt to have for 3 weeks though!
