With the World Cup getting underway on Sunday, we’ll be bringing you some team reveals from Fantasy managers and Fantasy Football Scout users who have been successful in international tournaments or short-format games in the past.

Here, FPL Danno â€“ who finished 12th in the world in Euro 2020 Fantasy last summer – talks us through their Matchday 1 draft.

Make sure to check out our complete guide for everything else you need ahead of Qatar 2022.

GOALKEEPERS

Diego Costa ($5.0m): He has been very good at club level this season and is a fairly cheap way into the Portuguese defence ahead of their meeting with the lowest-ranked team in the tournament.

Danny Ward ($4.5m): Much improved at Leicester City and a good back-up goalkeeper option, although there is still a modicum of doubt over just which Welsh shot-stopper gets the nod.

Defenders

Luke Shaw ($5.0m): He has got back into the United team in 2022/23 and has played well. He was very good in Euro 2020 Fantasy last time, scoring a goal, setting up three others and claiming four clean sheets, and is priced nicely at $5.0m.

Kieran Trippier ($5.0m): The best defensive asset in FPL this season – and the best defender in the Premier League in general. He’s been immense for Newcastle, registering five attacking returns and nine clean sheets.

Denzel Dumfries ($6.0m): He has been good in UCL Fantasy for Inter and was a strong option in Euro 2020 Fantasy, registering as many ‘big chances’ as team-mate and forward Memphis Depay.

Joakim Maehle ($4.5m): Another very attacking wing-back who plays in Serie A, he was briefly a hidden gem in Euro 2020 Fantasy but everyone knows all about him now. Denmark are solid defensively and he is underpriced, having scored a remarkable five times in qualifying.

Borna Sosa ($3.5m): A cheap option on the bench and a great budget enabler who, the consensus seems to be, starts for Croatia.

    Choose between:

    1.Di maria and Costa
    Or
    2. Sane and Ward (or other 4.5 gk)

I already own Messi and Martinez

Anyone know when nations have to confirm their starting line-ups? Unlike FPL is possible to see who starts 90 minutes or even 2 hours before kickoff?

You can make changes minutes before the game kicks off to your starting 11 so doesn't really matter.

more to do with work/busy life etc. Confirmed line-ups earlier make gives more time to swap out a non-playing player if stuck in work.

Hello, pretty behind on WC fantasy. What's everyone's logic behind using the 12th man on the 1st gw? Just to get it over with?

It makes sense to use it in the group stages as this is when there's a bigger chance of players going nuts.

      I'm on Mbappe as 12th man MD1

David Raum: Starting LB for Germany being criminally overlooked at only 4.5m ?

    - Started 9 of last 10 matches for Germany
    - 1 goal 13 assists in Bundesliga last season
    - 3rd most key passes in Bundesliga last season (Only behind Muller and Kostic)
    - 1st for completed passes and crosses into penalty area box last season (excluding set pieces)

    Guys a marauding left back.

This season since he's at new club in Leipzig the numbers are down due to different system but in germany national team he'll certainly be given license to roam forward.

Someone with sharper eyes than me noticed that CG appears on a defensive corner chart held by Flick during German training. For Christian Günter.

      So don’t think Raum starts.

CG (Günther) and DR (Raum) are a pairing on the left of the sheet.
On the diagram itself, CG is one of the few I can make out, on the back post with Kimmich on near post.
Would also suggest that Gundogan is not in first eleven.

    Captaincy dilemma for MD1:

    1) Start with Kane as captain, switch to Messi if low score
    2) Start with Messi as captain, switch to KDB if low score

I can’t get the drop down list of players that’s shown on the right in all the videos. I’m only playing on an iPhone and an iPad. Can someone tell me how I can get this list. At the moment if I take out a player and choose another, I get a list that replaces my team as the top picture, so I can’t see my team or consider options.

Can I get an unlocked player on the pitch after seeing the lineup on a matchday ? For example, Hennessey plays and scores 2 points and then can I bring in Rochet after seeing the lineup ? Or is it the first match of a each day like UCL ?

I’m not sure Fifa understand their own rules. My understanding is you can’t change the player once selected or deactivate the chip. You’re locked in. You need to do it before the first game of the matchday kicks off. So before 4pm today

Regarding the supposed wildcard hack.. (reposting from https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2022/11/19/world-cup-fantasy-2022-rule-changes-and-clarification-on-chips-transfers-captaincy/ in case nobody reads that page anymore).

So, I'm thinking that the wildcard hack will, in fact, NOT work as theorized. A priori, I'm suspicious because it doesn't really make sense as a rule based on all other fantasy formats we've played, as well as the very short answer of the supposed game developer from the DM (I would expect more clarification than "correct" on a rule that I'm sure he's aware is very untypical for the game).

But that's not the main reason I believe the hack won't work. Look at the wording from the official rules page:

"Wildcard – Will allow you to make unlimited transfers within a specific round"

Notice that, if instead of "within" the rules said "before", we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Only because the rule suggests that the "unlimited" extends to the whole round are we confused. But at the same time, the rules also say:

" (cannot be used for the first match of the group stage or for the round of 16)"

    and from the FAQ:

"because in Round 4 you already have unlimited transfers."

But if the wildcard actually allowed you to make unlimited transfers WITHIN the round, it should be available for all rounds, no? Sure, it would still be silly to use it in rounds 1 and 4, but maybe somebody wants to be able to make unlimited transfers within one of those rounds because whatever. Why would the rules randomly deprive him of this option?

Anyway, let me know if my reasoning makes sense to you.

I agree the guy answering the questions looked like the same guy who wrote the rules was in a hurry to get home to watch the jungle and never played a fantasy football game in his life

        FPL BRAINS,

If that hack works as the DM guy suggests, you can use your wildcard to make unlimited transfers WITHIN the round you used it for, not just BEFORE it. So, I can use it in round 4 to ensure two perfect teams for both rounds 4 and 5. Maybe I want to do that, why not?

But the rules don't allow you to use the wildcard in round 4 so I can't do that. The question is, if wildcard works as described, why is it disabled for rounds 1 and 4?

        1. Paqueta Rice
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 17 days ago

It’s disabled for rounds 1 and 4 because you already have free transfers in 1 and 4. I think because the rule states that if you transfer a locked player out after they have played, you keep their points and the transferred in players points don’t come into effect until the following matchday. So play the WC MD2 and after all your players are locked in matchday 2 and before the last game finishes, change the locked players out for a squad matchday 3? I’m not sure it will work as it seems a massive flaw but going to give it a shot.

          Seems a big flaw however

          1. cthaeh
            • 7 Years
            3 years, 17 days ago

If that's the rule, then why shouldn't I be able to use it in rounds 1 and 4? That way I can essentially also make teams for rounds 2 and 5, respectively.

            1. Paqueta Rice
              • 5 Years
              3 years, 17 days ago

I’m assuming that’s because they overlooked their own flaw to begin with. The game is set up so it can’t be used in 1 and 4. They didn’t intentionally leave it open to be used in the way suggested.

              1. cthaeh
                • 7 Years
                3 years, 17 days ago

I guess it boils down to: what's more likely, that they made a mistake while making or describing the rules.

              2. Jambot
                • Fantasy Football Scout Member

This. I don’t think they realised they’d created the flaw or that it could be used in weeks 1 and 4 so disabled it for those rounds unnecessarily

                  • 7 Years
                  3 years, 17 days ago

Still, it's kind of a gamble to rely on this hack, no? If it turns out that it doesn't work as described and use it in MD2, you might be left with a very poor team for MD3.

        2. cthaeh
          • 7 Years
          3 years, 17 days ago

In fact, if that's indeed how the rule works, it would be worse to use it for round 3 than for round 4 because round 4 already gives you unlimited transfers and you won't be able to take advantage of the "use it for two rounds" trick. Whereas if you use it in round 4, you will be able to have two brand new teams for both rounds 4 and 5.

Not within the round, only before it. WC allows you to have it within the round, which then allows you to also make transfers to the next round (supposedly, according to that interpretation of the rules).

I don’t think the wildcard will work like that once match 2 players are locked you will not be allowed to change them for match 3 without using transfers or taking hits it makes no sense to work like that

How I see it is the best strategy to plan for WC in Matchday 3 as was the consensus before the hack came to light.

Then if it does actually work for others, save the WC for the quarters / semis and use the hack. You could then still have 5 transfers to overhaul your MatchDay 3 team to get rid of any players in the dead rubber games? (One saved from Matchday 1, then 2 from Matchday 2 and 2 in Matchday 3)

      1. cthaeh
        • 7 Years

Unfortunately, you can only roll over one transfer to the next round, they don't get saved like that. So, you'll have a maximum of 3 free transfers for MD3.

Not how I unsderstand it, your two transfers get unlocked at the start of the Matchday, so save 1 from MD1, then you have 3 in MD2 which in theory you could use on the last day of the MD on locked players in prep for MD3, then another 2 unblocked on the morning of the first game of MD3?

          1. cthaeh
            • 7 Years
            3 years, 17 days ago

Oh, got what you mean now. Sure, you might be able to use 5 transfers like that, assuming you won't have any actual need to use your transfers for MD2 itself. But keep in mind that sometimes you can lose like 70% of your team due to rotations in MD3, will 5 necessarily be enough even?

            1. cthaeh
              • 7 Years
              3 years, 17 days ago

Plus, I'm not sure if you actually get that 1 transfer from MD1 roll over MD2 if you use wildcard in MD2.

Sorry I’m not suggesting to use the hack in Matchday 2, but to see if it works, if it does then use the 5 transfers in lieu of a planned WC in Matchday 3 and save the WC for quarters / semis

Agree, potentially not, but is it more of a risk to use the WC in Matchday 2, for the hack not to work which will potentially leave you up the creak in Matchday 3

    2 final questions guys!

If I transfer a locked player for a locked player, say tomorrow, will that come out of MD1 or MD2 transfer allowance?!

Also, if I transfer Dumfries out if he does not start tomorrow, for Telles, (before Dumfries is locked) can I then put telles last on the bench and then bring him on on the last day?! Or will I have to leave telles starting as he can’t come off to come back on after the Dumfries transfer?!

    Thanks!

I means until Telles plays can he keep getting subbed on and off the starting 11?!

Is taking out a high player (Kane) after he’s played and a budget player before he played and bring in and high value player (Neymar) before he’s played and a budget player after he played using your 2 transfers really going to get you Kane and neymars points ? Seems mental if this is the case but a game changer on your teams if so ?

If using wildcard MD2 would you still go Dumfries? Senegal are good even without Manè albeit they struggle to score. Not sure Holland will score much though
