Crystal Palace v Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa v Wolverhampton Wanderers are the focus of our latest Scout Notes piece.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

RUTHLESS KANE

Harry Kane (£11.6m) recorded his biggest FPL haul of the season so far at Selhurst Park, as Spurs prepared for their potential Double Gameweek 20 with an impressive second-half showing. In a resounding 4-0 win, the England captain racked up 16 points, courtesy of two goals, an assist and maximum bonus. As a result, Kane is now just 15 points behind Erling Haaland (£12.2m) at the top of the overall player standings. However, he has made three additional appearances, with his points per match average (7.1) someway behind that of the Norwegian (9.5).

Still, nearly 50% of the top 10k managers own Kane and he could play twice in Gameweek 20. However, that double-header will only happen if neither Spurs nor Manchester City are involved in FA Cup third-round replays. He’ll also need to avoid a caution in the north London derby if he wants to take part in both games, as he currently sits on four yellow cards, with a fifth resulting in a one-match ban.

Kane was joined by Matt Doherty (£4.6m) and Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) in securing double-figure hauls at Palace, with the wing-backs each supplying attacking returns in addition to clean sheets. Of the pair, it was Doherty who stood out most, as he netted his first goal of the season. It’s also worth noting that no player from either side could beat him for shots inside the box (four) in Gameweek 19.

Spurs, meanwhile, kept their first clean sheet since Gameweek 11, having conceded two or more goals in each of their previous seven outings. Given their upcoming schedule, it’s debatable just how much attention we should afford their wing-backs, given that three of their next four fixtures (see below) pit them against the division’s top two attacks. Even Fulham have scored in all but one of their 16 matches from Gameweek 3 onwards.

Elsewhere, with Dejan Kulusevski (£7.9m) still injured, Son Heung-min’s (£11.6m) return to the scoresheet was timely. Despite sharing the Golden Boot last season, this was only the second Premier League game that the South Korean has scored in this term. A fit and firing Sonny has the potential to shake up the FPL template and his goal will surely hand him a boost, but he did look off the pace at times for much of the game at Palace,

“It’s a really good performance, a solid performance. Finally, we didn’t concede a goal, scored four goals, important for our strikers, Harry Kane scored twice, and it was important for Sonny to score. For us, we’re talking about an important player and to keep his confidence high is very important. Matthew [Doherty] scored. He also scored in the three friendly games we played during the World Cup. He’s becoming a top scorer.” – Antonio Conte

Also, a quick word on Bryan Gil (£5.0m), who was involved in three of the four goals, with his pass for Kane’s second resulting in an assist.

“There were so many positives, especially, I’m happy for the young players. We are facing this period with important players injured and you know very well, to play at this level, you need all the players available. Despite this, tonight, we showed with Gil, he’s going to improve game by game.” – Antonio Conte

As for Palace, they are in a rut, having conceded seven goals in their two home matches since the World Cup. Now, they sit bottom of our Season Ticker in the next six Gameweeks, with all of their opponents currently inside the top 10.

BUDGET OPTIONS ON SHOW AT VILLA PARK

Danny Ings (£6.4m) came off the bench to equalise for Aston Villa on Wednesday after Daniel Podence (£5.3m) had put the visitors ahead with a fine early strike.

Leon Bailey (£4.5m), making his third successive start since the World Cup, should have won it late on, only to shoot wide with the goal at his mercy. He racked up an impressive four shots and created three chances in Gameweek 19, yet his starting spot may soon come under threat, with Ings now on six goals from just eight league starts/787 minutes in 2022/23.

“He was feeling (it). He had the responsibility to score. We were speaking about against Liverpool he had three very good chances to score and to win the match. And on Sunday (against Tottenham Hotspur) he worked a lot, defensively as well. But every player, offensively, they have to be brilliant when they’re scoring, like here for example with Dany Ings. But when he had the last chance to score, he finished the match crying because he’s feeling (it). And when he’s feeling, I think it’s good. I’m so happy with his commitment, his idea to try and help the team, playing as a striker, as a winger like the second half. He did really good work and only missed his last chance to really help us win it.” – Unai Emery on Leon Bailey

Aston Villa had been hugely impressive in their 2-0 win at Spurs on Sunday but this was a very different type of game, with many of their players struggling to impose themselves in a disappointing first 45 minutes. Improvement followed after the half-time introduction of Philippe Coutinho (£6.6m), although Lucas Digne (£4.6m) underwhelmed and was one of four players hooked inside 68 minutes.

As for Wolves, Julen Lopetegui named an unchanged starting XI but did introduce new striker Matheus Cunha (£5.5m) in the second half.

“Matheus Cunha needs to play more and maybe he was for 30 minutes and no more, but step by step he has to improve. Today I think that he started playing in a very key moment for the match, but he’s going to improve.” – Julen Lopetegui

READ MORE: FPL new signings: Who is Wolves forward Matheus Cunha?

Podence netted his second goal in three games since the restart but was forced off with an injury at half-time. Hugo Bueno (£3.9m), meanwhile, continues to impress at left-back, with another accomplished display from the youngster.

“We lost Daniel Podence in the half who is a very important player for us to have on the ball and in control of the situation. We don’t know how he’s going but he had problems in the first-half and he couldn’t continue in the second-half. This was a pity because we wanted to overcome Aston Villa from having the ball and of course Daniel Podence is a very important player for us in this kind of situation. So in the second-half, when we are more tired and when this kind of player is out, maybe without that, we would have had more points.” – Julen Lopetegui

Oh yeah, I'll still hold with a Brighton double possibly on the horizon, but not sure when/if to bench him if he's become a rotation risk

I’ve read this too - actually good news from an FPL perspective as Brighton have some cheap and good assets in the midfield department

See below. Too many charges and his team will dispute them which will take time and then when the verdict is finally made, he will appeal the charges. I honestly don't think he will miss (m)any games this season because of the charges.

Pretty high I would say, and the ban won't be happening overnight. Too many charges and his team will dispute them which will take time and then when the verdict is finally made, he will appeal the charges. I honestly don't think he will miss (m)any games this season because of the charges. That said, I am sticking with Mitrovic as my third striker, although I am torn given Brentford's form and next three fixtures.

      http://sportwitness.co.uk/transfer-beckons-for-brighton-player-after-rejecting-several-renewal-offers-aims-for-big-move/
Leandro Trossard has less than six months left on his contract and Brighton & Hove Albion have an option to extend it until 2024.

The Premier League side have offered ‘several’ long-term deals to the 28-year-old in recent weeks, but he has ignored them.

That’s according to Het Belang van Limburg, who add Brighton have exercised the option to extend the winger’s deal by a further year.

After spending over four seasons at The Amex, the Belgium international feels he is ‘ready for a step higher’. Therefore, the chance of him staying at the club beyond this season is ‘small’ and a ‘transfer beckons’ in the summer.

Who would you go for for the next 5 GWs?

    A) Akanji
    B) Botman

Akanji has mun/TOT, WOL, tot*, AVL/ars, nfo)

    *bench for White (eve)

Botman has FUL, cry, WHU, bou, LIV**)

    **bench for White (avl)

Newcastle fixtures looks better and have a more solid defence but 2 extra fixtures over the next 4 GWs seems quite significant.

Im thinking the same... Cancelo + Darwin -> Akanji/Botman + Kane for free. Im thinking to go Botman atm, I have Trippier. Akanji not 100% nailed right? Dias and Laporte coming back and its Pep.

I didnt realise thought that City have 2x DGWs coming so maybe its Akanji after all

      1. agueroooooney

Akanji has started every game for a long time now. But obviously no one is completely nailed with Pep. If there were no doubles I would be on Botman without a doubt, even a single double gameweek would put it more in the balance. The fact they have two doubles in 4 GWs just swings it for me I think. Things may change with all the FA Cup games between now and the next deadline as well but leaning towards Akanji at the moment.

This easily has to be one of my worst seasons. Think I'm too caught up in the money I can spend.

Refused to bring in Shaw after World Cup even though I knew it made sense.
Stayed on Foden even though I knew I shouldn't.
Didn't lose Cancelo, when I don't think he's worth his price point this year.
Just lost Kane for Mitro when I said he's smashing it this season.

Stupid decisions all round from me. Down to 2M OR. Lucky to finish top 100K now

    1. Mirror Man

What made you change your mind on these things? If it was reading opinions on here then try playing the rest of the season going with what you think, don't be swayed by others.

Shaw - The general consensus around United and being "awful"
Foden - Personal opinion I think he's unbelievable talent. Why Pep & Gareth don't start him make me think there must be underlying off-field issues
Cancelo - He's either blanking or hauling, not inbetween (City been "poor" defensively this season)
Kane - Their game against Villa just scared me off of him even though I said to mates he's flying this season it's just going under the radar because of Haaland.

Might have to take a few weeks off of here and just think for myself again

Yeh, this place is a nightmare really for making you doubt your decisions.
I brought Shaw in for Cancelo, I played KDB instead of Foden although I agree with you 100% Foden should be up there as a must have, and I held onto Kane even though, as you, say, he'd looked rank.
A lot of it comes down to luck though, things will turn around

It's kind of like, post WC I actually wanted the Odegaard and Martinelli double up, but everyone was like Odegaard is a bad team bully etc etc. So I ignored him and he hit back to back double digit hauls. But that's the learning curve. Gotta trust myself.

Nice work on Shaw in for Cancelo, HUGE shout that one.

Had Salah and just felt he trolled me. Blanked against West Ham & Forest, then banged a brace against Spurs (which was the week I took him out). Only brought him in because of that Arsenal v City blank in GW12.

I stayed away from Rashford on the World Cup Wildcard too which was stupid given his WC "form". 27 points in 3 GWs. Mental. Stupid maverick plays from me.

I know how you feel (I think). I have been nearly every season in the top 100.000. This moment around 2M (GW 18) and in a downward spiral (this week only 32 points so far). All my choices seem to be the wrong ones. Went for Salah, KdB, Darwin and Martial instead of Kane, ARS-midfielders or Rashford. (No Shaw, but my other defenders are ticking along.) In midfield I also have Almiron and I rotate Andreas and Mitoma, where I managed to play Andreas and Mitoma in the wrong weeks. My gameweekranks from the restart are all around 6M and higher. It's frustrating. But not giving up. Kane has to come in (and Salah will becomes an ARS-midfielder). Only afraid that moving to an more standard team will make it more difficult to climb in the ranks......

Guess we have to hit a "template" team with just the occasional differential now plus not get those all important captain choices wrong.

My brother, the madman, captained Kane this weekend and when I asked why he just went "London derby" LOL! Which is a great answer to be fair.

I am sticking with Mitrovic, and not just because of the ban as I fall into the minority of thinkers in that I don't think the ban will be coming any time soon and possibly not this season. Toney has three good fixtures coming up, but Mitrovic has about ten. This means I can save a FT in three GWs - or at least this is my logic.

I think if he had had ten offences, I would agree with you. He has hundreds though and his legal team can question each one individually to slow the process down. It does depend on his appetite for prolonging the ban though i.e. he may prefer to just get it over and done with now like ripping a plaster off. Given he is having the season of his life though and Brentford are flying, I have a feeling they will want to postpone any charges as much as they can. Then once the verdict is made, he can then appeal each charge that was given to him. This won't be quick unless he and his legal team want it to be! You need to decide then if he has more motivation to get it over with or to prolong the inevitable.

Given that Spurs get the double is Kulu + Darwin to Almiron + Kane worth a -4 hit?

My ideal, realistic result tonight is a 1-0 City win with KDB getting an assist and 3 BP while Kepa or Cucu gets an OG.

And a yellow card for Haaland, I guess.

With Kepa Cancelo Haaland (not captaining) think a 0-0 would be good outcome!

Anyone else going into tonight without KDB and Haaland uncaptained? How far will we drop?

Yep. Gone from 210k to 105k so far this week, with no KdB and Haaland uncap. Hoping to get out of tonight at 200k max. Come on Chelsea.

As an Arsenal fan you should want City to drop points! But I agree it never feels good wanting Chelsea to get a result.

      2FT , 3.9m ITB
      Kepa (ward)
      Tripps Cancelo White (Neco) (James)
      Martinelli Rashy KDB Almiron (Andreas)
      Haaland Havertz Mitro

Any ideas where to take this next? I’m looking at Brentford & Newcastle for their fixtures currently

I'll be getting Botman fairly soon. I want to take more advantage of Newcastle's defensive strength.

      Best premium to bring in

A Salah to KDB on free
B Darwin to Kane plus Cancelo to Akanji -4 ( and go thremium with Salah Kane Haaland)
C Mitrovic to Kane and Salah to Foden( if showing form and back in favour ) -4

Any suggestions for my 2 FTs?

Guess Darwin (Toney?) and Cucurella (?) out are the most pressing issues?
      Or Andreas to Ødegaard?

      Kepa (ward)
      Trippier Cucurella White (Bueno Patterson)
      KDB Rashford Almiron Martineli (Andreas)
      Haaland Darwin Kane

      1 mill. in the bank

Schar due another 15 pointer. Forget that 0.6m price difference between him and the Botman. Money doesn't matter this season.

Agree Schär is likely to the best option here if you're looking long-term & the 0.6 isn't particularly needed

Would love to bring in Schar, but would mean I probably don't have enough to get Saka unless I go for Odegaard?

      3. agueroooooney

Don't think Schar is worth the extra over Botman, neither get many attacking returns and they seem to get similar bonus.

I would go with Akanji if you think he's nailed (trying to figure that out). The extra fixtures and swing it in his favour.

      2 FT and 0.5 ITB.

      A - Patterson > Botman and roll 1 FT
      B - Salah & Greenwood > Kane + 5.9mid
      C - Salah & Mitro > Kane & Odegaard

      Kepa
      Gabriel - Trippier - Shaw
      Salah - KDB - Martinelli - Rash - Almiron
      Haaland - Mitro

      Ward - Walker - Greenwood - Patterson

      Any of these worth -4?

      A) Darwin Mitro ➡ Kane Ferguson
      B) Darwin Odegaard ➡ Kane Garnacho (have Saka)

Garnacho or Ferguson would be on bench
