Throughout the 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, our team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors will be sharing their thoughts, tips and own transfer plans.

Only Premium Members are able to read every single one of these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

Here, five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman tackles Darwin Nunez and his recent form.

... 2

Has an FPL player ever divided opinion quite like Darwin Nunez (£8.9m)?

The 23-year-old has five goals without penalties in 10 Premier League starts – a decent enough return for an £8.9m forward – but has been particularly wasteful since returning from the World Cup, missing all seven big chances he’s been presented with.

Right from the start, Darwin has blown hot and cold, but is he worth persisting with in FPL?

In this, my latest column, I’ll take a closer look.

THE STATS

Among FPL forwards that have played over 500 minutes this season, Darwin ranks top for shots per 90 minutes (p90) with 5.61, a hugely encouraging statistic.

He is also first for shots in the box p90 (4.29) and second for expected goals (xG) p90, with 0.76. Essentially what that tells us is that he is always involved in the attacking third, but his goal tally should be higher than it is.

At times, I do think he’s been unlucky.

For example, he’s hit the woodwork more often (four) than any other player in the top flight. He was also out of luck again on Tuesday when he went round the Brentford goalkeeper David Raya (£4.6m) only to see his shot blocked on the line, before having a goal ruled out in the second half for offside.

However, no player has missed more big chances (15) than Darwin this season (see below), which is the one stat that frustrates more than any other. While Erling Haaland (£12.2m) has converted 57.14% of his big chances, Darwin’s rate is just 26.67%.

For context, I'm in the multiple top 10k league, and 77 would have you 2nd out of over 300 highly engaged players. I'm gonna guess it's probably a top 0.5% score.

If you want a brag, then brag by all means. But you must have got a green arrow and rank rise in every league you're in, and you've been on here for 9 years - so I cannot believe you don't understand how fpl works by now.

Correct. I get the appeal but it just doesn't make sense in my setup. It requires a -4, I won't captain him and I have to lose my £8.0m midfielder slot which I want for Saka in a couple of weeks. I'd probably do it if I could in one move, even with four yellow cards, but then again, how appealing is Arsenal, Man City x2 and Fulham in the next four, given how poor Spurs have been?

      1. camarozz
        • 11 Years

Like i siad i have 2fts and kulu flagged, was going for Rodrigo and downgrade Robertson to afford kane so also a - 4 and i do believe Darwin has to start scoring with all the chances hes getting.

Maybe i should stick and realky shake things up by selling kdb after the dgw if he under preforms, then i could actually have Kane for Mitro.

The main issue is I'm not too sure who I'd buy as a replacement (apart from anyone lol).

Spurs DGW but reckon they have even lower chance of CS. Then FUL & MCI after. Not ideal fixtures.

Another City defender is a shout but again - not necessarily getting CSs in this DGW. Also not nailed (although I think Stones is a decent shout).

Could get another NEW defender, but I also probably start Mitrovic... Think still a good chance NEW keep a CS but you never know.

When the FT could be used for someone like Kane, doesn't seem overly favorable odds making a defensive transfer.

Just the attacking potential is enticing...

Agreed though, not much CS potential which is concerning when looking for a DGW defender.

My issue is I wouldn't know who else would be a better option? Also not sure if City keep 2x CS' and who would be nailed in that backline

          Get someone you want long-term

Ignore the presence of a double this week. Not worth it in defence

Do you want a City defender for the next 6+ GWs? Do you want double Newcastle, with Schar's great attacking threat? Do you want to punt on Lewis, who keeps getting praised by Pep?

I'd steer clear of the Spurs defence that conceded 19 shots to an inconsistent Palace side and faces those two opponents next, especially since I think Spurs should have been 2 goals down by half time... For the 11th game in a row

Pep now talks about mental fitness as often as he talks about physical fitness, or maybe even more

This isn't good for FPL because it is info that is almost never fully available to us

And it's not just stuff like having zeal or hunger or looking stressed. He's saying things that boil down to "Are you okay? Do you really feel good, in general?"

This factor makes him even more unpredictable, because anything can change someone's mental state

A side effect of this is that it can form a positive feedback loop, as an unhappy player isn't likely to feel happier when dumped from the lineup. I don't think he cares though. I think he just wants the best XI performers for every match, and he's willing to lose anybody to get there

I imagine Pep to be like the nasty music teacher in Whiplash (also bald), pitting his players against each other in order to get results above all else. That praise for Rico Lewis felt less like praise for a young player coming through and more a veiled dig at Cancelo tbh.

He was a hairs breadth away from a tap in and likely 18 point captain haul. Fine margins.

    Cancelo and Mitrovic
    to
Kane and which of the below for free?

    A. Lewis
    B. Schar
    C. Stones

While Cancelo looking to drop in value, it won't affect his sell value for me just yet. As such, I will wait til closer with cup games on.

As a huge football fan, having watched Chelsea growing up, Gianluca Vialli is an indescribable loss to football. Formed part of that beast of a Juventus team with Ravanelli, Del Piero and Nedved in the 90s. RIP.

Made early transfers again. I know so much that could go wrong but think Mount and Darwin to Kane and Mitoma just fit with my team.

    Kepa
    Cancelo - Trippier - Digne
    KdB - Odegaard - Almiron - Mitoma
    Mitrovic - Kane - Haaland

    Ward - Rashford - White - Bueno

    0 FT. 0.1 ITB

I'd bench Mitrovic for Rashford here

Mount should face Palace, one of the league's worst defences at the moment, while Cancelo is unlikely to start an EPL game any time soon

You've made your bed, and it could come good

      Good luck

I don't see it that way. There were valid reasons for each of those decisions. The closest to being wrong would be benching Trippier, but you've not said who you started over him. Shaw and Spurs lads blew him away for points, for instance

          We move 🙂

    Hey guys

Usual disclaimer about leaving any moves until FA Cup games are done and DGW teams become clear… but early thoughts?

Got 2FT and 2.9ITB. Original plan was to bring Cancelo in but City defence too much of a lottery now? Ederson if he has a double? Castagne has a nice fixture next up but should I get rid?

    2FT 2.9ITB
    Kepa Ward
    Trippier Shaw White Castagne Bueno
    KDB Rashford Martinelli Almiron Andreas
    Haaland Kane Mitrovic

    Cheers

      Close to perfect

Bueno + Andreas to Schar/Stones/Akanji/Lewis + Mitoma should let you bench Mitro for this one GW only, and maybe White and Shaw benched too, for Castagne's last chance

I've owned Ederson earlier in the season, he isn't really worth bringing in but looking at your team you have no real issue so maybe go ederson to use an FT

I'd however be tempted to go Rico Lewis over Ederson, easily benched after the dgw

      BTW just use 1FT

Nice one, thanks. Yeah, Ederson feels like a lot of budget for a low ceiling. Bueno to a Newcastle defender or Lewis or another DGW defender could be the way to go

      Banging

All available evidence from this season and previous is that Ederson is a waste.

Extra Toon defender a clear option.

The luxury move is to hop off double Fulham - immediate fixtures gash. The bold one would be to go where no one will and get Toney if fit. Lovely fixtures and form and feels unlikely the FA will get round to banning him - if it happens - until fixtures turn. Great differential with short term appeal.

Otherwise Summerville or Rodrigo from Andreas. My money is on Summerville.

Have a feeling we might see Mendy back in the Chelsea line up after Kepa's howler last night...

    Anyone else concerned?

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

      One mistake isn't a howler

He didn't have a bad game. He made one mistake with his footing (that's why he couldn't dive), and Mendy made worse

I'm not worried about Kepa. Would be more worried about Cucurella because he actually got subbed off for having an all-game howler (Kepa thought Marc had tracked Mahrez's run) with multiple mistakes beyond the goal, and Lewis played better

    2. Miguel Sanchez
      • 10 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

      Not really.

Mendy is shocking with ball to feet and this is a big part of how he wants his teams to play out from the back. Think he will hold on to Kepa for as long as is feesible.

But yeah, Kepa didn't cover himself in glory last night.

They don't need to confirm it, as long as City & Spurs fa cup games don't end in a draw hence a replay then the double is confirmed

Fixture schedulers are waiting for Cup results to know who will have more congestion

So, announcements should start trickling in as EPL teams play in the Cups

No date yet. They don't announce their announcement dates, but they'll try to be as early as possible because there's gonna be some short-term notices for many fans this season

Some as soon as DGW20 itself, like Man U

would you rather have for long term:

    B) another Arsenal midfielder?

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

      Close. Very close

But my answer will involve taking things out of isolation:

There are many valid midfield assets right now, but not so many forward assets

This is what swings it to Mitro for me. I really like the Haaland Kane Mitrovic frontline, and don't see a reason to change it anytime soon

The second Arsenal mid can come in for an injured or underperforming midfielder later

I know the Arsenal mid should outscore Mitro in the next 3 GWs or so, but you said long term 🙂

    Play one:

    A) Mitro (new) – Will play Schär and Trippier, so it will essentially be a hedge.

    B) Azpi (CRY) – Double down on a Newcastle win.
