Our latest Members article series, reviving an old Scout strand called Tales of the Expected, explores the expected goals (xG) data from the last six matches, assessing each side from an attacking and defensive perspective.

In addition, we’ll also check out the form players on show, asking if their recent output is sustainable.

Having last looked at these tables ahead of Gameweek 16, it’s time to revisit them again, armed with the latest stats from the restart.

Only Premium Members are able to read these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

TEAMS

First up, let’s take a look at the recent xG data over the last six matches, taking into account that Wolves, Southampton and Aston Villa have all changed managers in this period.

XG: LAST SIX MATCHES

No top-flight side has scored more goals than Brighton in their last six matches, with 17 from 8.65 xG. Everton and Chelsea have been on the receiving end of heavy 4-1 defeats in that time, with xG figures higher than 2.0 racked up by Albion on both occasions.

BRIGHTON XG BREAKDOWN: LAST SIX MATCHES
GW14 (CHE)GW15 (wol)GW16 (AVL)GW17 (sou)GW18 (ARS)GW19 (eve)
Brighton2.441.570.660.641.172.17

In recent seasons, Brighton have heavily underperformed their xG, so it’s notable that they are finally converting their chances and overachieving (+8.35) by such a margin. With De Zerbi settling in nicely, budget options like Kaoru Mitoma (£4.9m) and Alexis Mac Allister (£5.4m) carry potential.

Man City and Arsenal switch places at the top, although no side has underperformed their xG more than Pep Guardiola’s side in their last six matches (-3.97).

As for Arsenal, Eddie Nketiah (£6.5m) is deputising admirably in the absence of Gabriel Jesus (£7.9m), with only Newcastle keeping the Gunners’ attack below 2.0 xG since the restart.

ARSENAL XG BREAKDOWN: LAST SIX MATCHES

Arsenal2.302.251.812.202.931.12

Elsewhere, Darwin Nunez (£8.9m) has accounted for 4.13 of Liverpool’s xG tally but only scored twice, while Man Utd’s attack ahead of Double Gameweek 20 is clearly on the up. Yes, they have benefitted from a kind post-World Cup schedule (NFO/wol/BOU), but they last failed to score in Gameweek 11, so there is real progress under Erik ten Hag.

And what about Spurs? They were extremely clinical at Crystal Palace last time out – scoring four times from chances equating to just 1.39 xG – but their xG rank is 16th from Gameweek 17 onwards. That’s coincided with Dejan Kulusevski (£7.9m), their biggest creator behind Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) across the season, missing games.

West Ham, meanwhile, have dropped from third to 15th on the above table, while Chelsea are still struggling to create clear-cut opportunities under Graham Potter. And for all of Wolves’ improvements under Julen Lopetegui, they have managed an xG tally of just 2.46 in his three league games in charge, although it is still early days for the Spaniard.

Neither. You don't need a hit. I'd just play Shaw over Cancelo. But if you believe Cancelo starts one or both, then Shaw over Mitrovic

Your team doesn't need to be pegged back by a hit for this particular GW, imo. The doubles aren't made up of two great fixtures for any of them

About Mitro vs Toney: there's nothing wrong with Mitrovic after GW20, imo. Which of those defences in his next 6 do you see as strong defences on current form? Yes, an unbanned fit Toney could be gold with his next 3, but the two caveats remain )afaik) and, again, nothing wrong with Mitro as an asset. He scored in his last game and still bosses the stats behind/beside Haaland

In current form Rashford has to be a massive captain challenger to Haaland surely?

I can see why you might play safe-ish and TC Haaland, but I just feel there will be a better DGW ahead.

We expect City to close the gap on Arsenal and be right up there towards the end of the season. Can't see Haaland being rotated with Premier League on the line.

Then, with Rashfords form and midfielders getting extra points, it's a close call.

They each face one bad defence and one stellar defence, on current form

I'm not going to consider TC here because I only TC against two horrible defences in DGWs. It's a one-time chip, so I want the max probability of hauls

Agreed on better DGWs being ahead, for Haaland and even Rashford (Palace and Leeds)

For this GW in particular, I also agree on it being a close call. But this season has taught me that if I'm ever torn between Haaland and someone else for the captaincy, I should just default to Haaland and see what happens. Maybe when another Mitrovic-like situation emerges, like the Salah and Rashford doubles hopefully coming up

      1. TheTinman
        • 10 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

Wise words. I'm edging towards Rashford being the better pick. Think City concede to Utd and if they do it will be Rashford.

But Haaland hat trick in either game would not be a massive turn up for the books.

Plus City are home v Spurs whereas Utd are away vs Palace.

Difficult call. Play it safe or go with gut... Will be a Saturday morning decision!

But the TC definitely stays in its box for me this week.

Anyone who is convinced Stones is nailed is deluded. Particularly with Laporte returning to fitness and Dias also not far off, with Akanji, and Cancelo also likely to eventually retain his spot. Let’s not forget Ake

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 2 months ago

Wouldn't go as far as "deluded", Dazz. A bit harsh there...

I do feel we only have past data and that Pep can change anything on a dime. He might notice something in training, preserve someone for UCL (Mahrez last season), etc. His quotes can even prove to be misleading too

My current stance is: hold who you have for one more GW or two, except maybe Cancelo as he's seemingly frozen out of full-back spots *for now*, and is too expensive. Don't buy; Don't sell. Reassess for DGW23

6 starts in a row is about as nailed as they come for a city player. Particularly a defender.

But I do agree with your basic point. When you consider the ability of Stones to play RB and Laporte and Ake at LB plus the emergence of Lewis, you are talking about any 4 out of 8 or 9 each given week. For a team that is hardly pulling up trees and a manager with a propensity to rotate heavily even before the UCL restarts.

Hi all, currently have 5 with doubles: Rashford, Kane, Cancelo, KDB Halaand. Really confused on what to do with my FT. Thinking of the following moves, Cancelo + Patterson -> Stones & Shaw for a hit. Seems like a sideways move but cant really think of anything better. Worth it?

    1. Ze_Austin

      3 years, 2 months ago

If Patterson can chill at third sub for one more GW, Cancelo to Shaw for me

I see a good chance of City conceding maybe once in each match. Not the kind of opponents for a defensive hit. Shaw should at least get an opportunity for attacking and defensive returns vs Palace

Yeh, I've made the same move... Can't get Rashford in so have gone for Martial..

Re Weghorst I think he won't make it for this double at least maybe not even next gameweek if he is eventually signed. Also once he's signed I don't think he'll be the number 1 striker. I think he'll be more of a bench player give United something different of the bench.

Thanks to ManU and Liverpool shirts having similar red appearance on FPL, my Defence & Midfield have an appealing symmetry this week.
I may or may not have spent a couple of minutes rearranging them to look like this:

    ......................Orange
    ........Newcastle Red Newcastle
    Red Arsenal Newcastle Arsenal Red
    ...................White Blue
    ......Orange White Blue Gold

Salah right wing and Rashford left, of course.

Schar is likely to play every game he's available for, especially if you have a sub for his possible YC suspension. Lots have been said about his goal threat already, including last night's headers

Akanji might get Pep'd any day, any time

Similar team defensive stats, so it comes down to individual attack/BPS stats (Schar wins), fixture quantity (Akanji, but Pep) and fixture quality (Schar) in the next 4 GWs

            Best option?
            Kepa (ward)
            Cancelo Trippier Shaw (White Patterson)
            KDB Rashford Almiron Martinelli (Andreas)
            Haaland Darwin Mitro

            A. Mitro > Martial
            B. Cancelo & Darwin > Stones & Kane (-4)
            C. Cancelo & Almiron > Doherty & Mahrez (-4)
            D. Cancelo & Mitro > Kane & Lewis (-4)

Not a fan of any to be honest, Martial may be doubtful, wouldnt want to lose Darwin or Almiron, D looks best but Lewis may lose his place to Walker

Can only afford up to 4.3 in option D. Unless anything else you think? Have 1.7ITB

Its a tough one, Id be tempted to just do Cancelo to Stones. If Martial is fit I would go A

            KDB RASHFORD Almiron Martinelli
            KANE HAALAND Mitrovic

            Ward Botman White Andreas

So Walker in Goal and Edersen holding midfielder then.

On -4 right now - GTG? Anything else for a hit?

            Kepa
            Trippier/Shaw/Cucu
            KDB/Rash/Martinelli/Almiron
            Haaland/Kane/Darwin

            Ward/White/Bueno/Andreas

            Kepa
            CANCELO Trippier SHAW
            RASHFORD Almiron Martinelli KDB
            HAALAND Mitro KANE

            Ward Andreas Saliba Bueno

Best use of FT? Or save to bring in LIV assets if they double?

Thinking of keeping Cancelo for one more week and hoping for some sort of minor miracle...

Hold out incase of dgw announcement, Cancelo out would be obvious move, but todays lineup may give clues

Its pretty tricky to decide what to do with Mitrovic. Yes, Newcastle have solid defence and Fulhams run wont be promising, but Mitrovic has scored against Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Brighton, Brentford. Interesting to see if he can unlock Newcastles defence as well...

But yeah, still considering Mitrovic -> Mbuemo (or Watkins). I personally dont trust Martial.

I like Mitrović as someone to keep for the rest of the season - cheap enough to bench occasionally even if it means missing the odd haul, and good enough to start against anyone.

I don't own Mitro, but if I did I would definitely be holding. He's nailed for 90, on pens, playing for a good attacking side and posting good stats, their talisman and involved in most of their goals.

I'd be happy playing him against any team, but if you really didn't fancy playing him against Newcastle then if you have a decent bench you could consider benching him. At least that way you still have him in your team for the easier fixtures rather than wasting precious transfers removing him then potentially getting him back.

Didn't realise Mahrez was so cheap.

Plan was to do Mitrovic > Kane

Bruno > Man City Mid. Can get Mahrez, Gundo , Grealish or Bernardo.

              Should get Mahrez right??
