We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Wednesday night’s meeting between Crystal Palace and Manchester United.

The numbers and graphics below are taken from LiveFPL and our own Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

A comfortable win and clean sheet for Manchester United was dramatically snatched away in stoppage time by Michael Olise‘s (£5.4m) stunning free kick.

By cancelling out Bruno Fernandes’ (£9.8m) opener, Olise denied the Red Devils a tenth successive win in all competitions that would’ve seen them move into second place.

BLANKS FOR SHAW AND RASHFORD

Luke Shaw’s (£5.1m) two million owners were probably checking their live ranks as the game petered out – clean sheet points but nowhere near any bonuses. Suddenly, he ended up on just the two appearance points, although he did go close with a 16th-minute sliced shot that whistled wide.

There was also a first-half cross that debutant Wout Weghorst (£6.0m) headed over. Managers may even opt to bench Shaw for Sunday’s crunch trip to Arsenal, now that the brilliant Casemiro (£4.9m) will be suspended for picking up his fifth booking of the season.

As for Marcus Rashford (£7.1m), his effective ownership numbers are so high that goals or assists wouldn’t have made much impact on rankings. However, he did have a match-leading four shots and was involved in their goal, playing a one-two with Christian Eriksen (£6.3m) before the Dane pulled back to find Fernandes near the penalty spot.

The four-match scoring streak is over for Rashford but managers will keep the faith, especially with a possible Double Gameweek 22 on the way.

FERNANDES’ FABULOUS FORM

UPDATE ON BLANK AND DOUBLE GAMEWEEKS

Still competing in four competitions, Man United’s schedule is tight and no midweek can afford to be wasted, making it likely that their previously-postponed home meeting with Leeds United will be moved to create a Double Gameweek 22.

Yet, if either side needs an FA Cup replay – Erik ten Hag’s men host Reading whilst Leeds face either Boreham Wood or Accrington Stanley – the match will have to wait even longer.

All other Man United midweeks between now and the March international break are reserved for their two-legged League Cup semi-finals, Europa League journey and an FA Cup fifth-round tie should they proceed.

In fact, the situation will worsen if they or Brighton and Hove Albion reach the quarter-final, as it will force a Blank Gameweek 28 on top of the possible Blank Gameweek 25 of League Cup final weekend.

Crystal Palace are fine for 25 but their 28 depends on whether Arsenal remain in the FA Cup.

MARTIAL AND DALOT ABSENT

Those managers still with Anthony Martial (£6.6m) will be disappointed to see the Double Gameweek end with one solitary point. Withdrawn at half-time against Manchester City due to a leg problem, he wasn’t named in the squad for Selhurst Park. Neither was hurt right-back Diogo Dalot (£4.7m).

It meant that Weghorst made his FPL return less than a year after frustrating the community during numerous Double Gameweek blanks.

Meanwhile, absent for Palace was centre-back Joachim Andersen (£4.5m), with a calf complaint set to keep him on the sidelines for three weeks.

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita; Clyne, Guehi, Richards, Mitchell; Olise, Doucoure (Schlupp 71′), Hughes (Milivojevic 84′), Zaha; Edouard (Ayew 71′), Mateta (Eze 56′)

Manchester United XI: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, Eriksen (Fred 83′); Antony (Garnacho 69′), Fernandes, Rashford; Weghorst (McTominay 69′)

    Who to start?

    a) Mitrovic (h) to Spurs

    b) Almiron @ Palace

Mitro, since Palace look more competent now. Spurs still look horrible in defence in the first half. Maybe that'll change tonight

Toney vs Leeds, unless City seems back to blowing teams away tonight. There's a longer version of this answer on the previous page 😀

There are weeks to pick a differential captain and go against Haaland. At home to wolves wouldn’t be one of them

Wolves have conceded just 3 goals in 4 games since Lopetegui took over, and just as importantly, they're passing the eye test (to me they are anyway). Still struggling in the final third for consistency but their signings and time should help

He is an Italian international. He has a low centre of gravity like Eden Hazard. You can get in early or be a late adopter. Speaking as an owner.

Depends on who you're benching for Mitoma, assuming Andreas wasn't a starter for you

I'd rather get a more attacking defender (Schar, Estupinan, Mee, Pinnock, maybe Aurier if rotating) for Robbo for free now, play the usual 7th attacker, and then Andreas to a Brighton mid the next GW for free

Yes very nice moves this week. Burn is fine over Schar. I think you'll feel better not having Robbo in the team. Brighton are easily capable of putting 3+ past shaky Leicester so now is the time I'd say.

If Man Utd double in DGW22 then Bruno's form making him look pretty essential. Fixtures after this GW are as follows:

Bruno: CPL+LEE, lee, LEI, BRE*, liv
KDB: tot, AVL+ars, not, bou, NEW
Kane: MCI, lei, WHM, CHE, wol

For GW21 which looks like the best plan?
    A. KDB > Bruno and go without KDB thereafter
    B. KDB > Bruno and revert back to KDB for double likely part of a -4
    C. Lose Kane to have KDB + Bruno
    D. Go without Bruno

Yup typo in post and meant for GW22 transfers.

Unclear but Bruno was certainly the regular before Ronaldo, so sure he'll be keen to reclaim them especially with his recent confidence.

I don't think Brentford's 3-5-2, Forest's improved defence and facing Casemiro twice are still the good fixtures they once were

It's their favoured formation now. T. Frank has stopped switching back to 3-4-3 for "easy" games:

Frank on formation: "We want to keep [playing a] 3-5-2, as we like that shape and it has been good for us."

As an Arsenal fan I thought Kane was guaranteed a goal/penalty against Arsenal. He usually gets at least a pen. He’d also just smashed Palace too.

Bruno had underperformed in the games leading up.

There was some logic behind it. Must learn to hold next time.

        1. Ze_Austin

Fans usually have some pessimism about their own team

I'm a Liverpool fan and I felt Kane would be minimised to a max of one return vs Arsenal, because Arteta is good at controlling games, while that's precisely what Spurs are currently very bad at. What I can't attempt to predict is his potential in tonight's match, as City defence still has great stats but they're somehow leaky/unlucky against top talent

Also, I'm not too fond of using history when predicting games, as things change too quickly in the EPL now. Form is usually a better indicator, unless it's some truly bitter rivalry that always brings out the best/worst in the fans and players

All in the past now. Onwards and upwards 🙂

Will you keep Mahrez until DGW23?

What do you think is the best option?

    A) play Rashford and Shaw vs Arsenal + save the FT
    B) bench Rashford and Shaw, sell Foden and Digne for Odegaard and Stones (-4)

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 16 days ago

Wouldn't bench Rashford against anybody atm

Digne is injured and probably out of the first team, so he's a priority exit for me

I'm not a fan of signing up for the City roulette when every defender is fit and available to Pep

Considered Digne to Schar, if affordable? If not, Botman... If already on triple Newcastle, maybe Mee or Estupinan... Or play Shaw and get an Arsenal def next GW if you don't have one

    2. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years
      3 years, 16 days ago

Get rid of Foden. Bench Shaw if you can but its probably not worth a hit unless you need that extra defender more often. Would start Rashford in any fixture atm purely due to form, but it does depend on your other options (I wouldn't say you "can't" bench him as a rule)

Mitro > Toney this week or roll?

My team looks bad in general this week, have 5x players from Arsenal + United facing each other this week for example

Would selling Mitro help that? Could beef up your bench & rotate 1/2 of them if you can't see many points in that game? Doesn't hurt to have a deep squad with blanks on the way

      Yup. Great squad!

Healthy chance of 2+ returns for Ferguson vs Ward, imo, but tough to find who to bench for him here

Morning all, 2 FT and 0.5 ITB. Planning to roll one transfer and so which is the priority one for this week? Or other suggestion?

    A - Kepa > Raya
    B - Salah > Mitoma
    C - Walker > Dunk

    Kepa
    Gabriel - Trippier - Shaw
    Salah - KDB - Martinelli - Rash - Almiron
    Haaland - Toney

    Ward - Walker - Greenwood - Patterson

      I'd sell Walker

If Walker starts again today, I think I'll start seeing Lewis as a (very good) backup

While Walker was benched, Pep kept giving fitness as the reason... Unlike the things he said about Cancelo

If Lewis starts today and/or vs Wolves, then my guess is that they'll keep rotating based on Pep's tactics for each game

Something like Walker 3rd CB vs pacy wingers, Lewis hybrid DM/RB in games where Pep expects/wants to maintain possession

      Injured player takes priority

      I like Patterson to Botman

Thanks. You're not concerned by Botman blanking in GW25 if they win their semi? I also have other players likely to blank

More concerned about all the points he (and other blankers) will likely rack up before and after that BGW, especially when considering the fact that a defender who plays in GW25 might still get just the 1 or 2 points

          1. Jet5605
            • 11 Years

Yeah fair. Gw25 is a good bit away and NEW do look good defensively.

Disagree he has 4 able defenders there. Patterson wouldn't get a sniff in the next few games anyway.

Patterson is however scheduled back GW24, he's a fit young lad so hopefully he recovers to that timescale or even faster.

Then that makes him an option for GW25, saves a transfer on a fodder player and allows you to keep players who would blank who you want to keep GW26 onwards.

I said that because there's nobody else in the 15-man squad who's a priority sale atm

The premiums are underperforming, but still have good stats and fixtures

Kepa is still counting save points

So I feel one FT can be spent on a squad move, with the other rolled. Especially since Patterson plays for a bad, bad defence so he's not a great option when he does return

It's possible and very logical to see some other moves as improvements though

    Hi all
    Current team here:
    Kepa (Ward)
    Shaw, Trippier, Botman (White, Bueno)
    KDB, Rashford, Martinelli, Almiron (Andreas)
    Kane, Haaland, Toney

    1 FT.
    Should I roll FT?

Is a (second) Newcastle defender the best option to bring in for the next few weeks? I have Cash and Patterson to deal with, as well as Dalot possibly unavailable alongside Trippier and White who I'm playing. Little bit concerned with Bruno Guimaraes being out for a few weeks as well as Palace looking better in the last couple of games. Only other player I may consider is Ruben Dias if it looks like he'll play at the weekend as I think him being back will improve City across the board, was thinking of bringing him in for their next double so it'd save a transfer long-term, but it's a risk as he may still take time to get starts

Yeah a couple of weeks is what I've read, although that may still mean he misses their next 2 or 3 fixtures which is pretty much the main period I would want Schar for. If Shelvey was available I wouldn't worry too much but someone said he's out for around another month so I'm not too sure

        1. TheTinman

Shelvey won't play anytime soon. He also has 2 games to play to trigger a contract extension, so depending on Eddie's plans that is one to keep an eye on.

Joelinton - Willock - Longstaff will be our midfield 3. They're more than capable but one more injury and we are very light in that area.

I do suspect it's a positive we will be looking at in January though.

If you see my post in the above I don't think Patterson is a problem which needs dealt with. Transfers are going to be better used elsewhere than a £4m defender who will be pinned to the 3rd spot on your bench every week.

I have Cash and Dalot as well, so likelihood is I'll have only 2 defenders next week if I don't make a move (which is what has happened this week). Cash is injured but even if he returns Young is ahead of him, and I'm doubting Dalot will return this week, but if he does I imagine it'll be as a substitute especially after he got injured so soon after his last return

Although Bruno will be a big miss for both defence & attack, I still think they're more than capable of grinding out another 3 CS in a row given the fixtures. Maybe a City defender makes more sense beyond that, but it seems to me a tricky time to nail the right one who you'll still be confident in starting 25, especially with no cover in your squad

I normally would avoid a City def for the same reasoning, but Dias started every game up to until his injury at GW14 bar one (which I think was a rest as he had played both Portugal games in the IB before it and then played the CL game 3 days after this game). I think he's a step above the rest and they're really missing his impact at the top of the pitch. I won't take a chance if he somehow starts tonight or doesn't appear at all, but if he's on the bench or gets subbed on then I'll be tempted

Huge mistake but they don't play him anyway so may as well let him go.

Yeah, think he's been one of their most consistent players, impressive given he's been in and out of the side too. I know Villa are signing another CF but could take time to settle
