The FFS Pro Pundits 34

Going into Gameweek 22, there are more than a few decisions that Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers need to make.

There are a few things on my mind when it comes to the decisions that I myself am weighing up, so consider this article a thought dump of the things I’m pondering!

BUY FERNANDES?

FPL Double Gameweek 22 tips: Best players, predicted line-ups, team news + more

First up, let’s talk about Manchester United. Being a United fan, I thought I’d weigh up how I feel about our assets.

If I were given a clean slate today, the three Manchester United players I would own would be Marcus Rashford (£7.2m), Bruno Fernandes (£9.9m) and Luke Shaw (£5.3m). It seems fairly obvious but I’ll just add a few nuances or points.

Firstly, Christian Eriksen’s (£6.3m) injury means more set pieces for Fernandes and Shaw as Eriksen tended to hog the corners and free-kicks beforehand. Also, there is some confusion about who takes penalties for Manchester United and my personal point of view is I think it is 65% likely that Fernandes takes them and 35% likely that Rashford assumes responsibility.

I’d like you to have a look at this video from the FA Cup tie against Everton last month, when Rashford scored from the spot:

In my opinion, Fernandes gets the ball first and Rashford asks him for the honour. It is also worth noting that Rashford was also in pursuit of a goalscoring record at the time. Now confidence and Rashford’s form might mean that he keeps them but if I was a betting man, I’d think that Fernandes takes the next one.

While Neale has already done a deep dive on Fernandes, I think that it is worth mentioning that he has been in better goalscoring positions than the underlying numbers indicate. I do want to acknowledge the potential impact of Eriksen’s absence and, in the EFL Cup tie against Nottingham Forest yesterday, Fernandes did look mainly like the creator and not the goalscorer (Erik ten Hag played him on the right and Jadon Sancho (£7.1m) as the number 10 when Sancho came on). But this is Bruno Fernandes we’re talking about and he does a good job of arriving inside the box late, so he will always be among the points.

One other advantage with Bruno is if you’re looking for a long-term Manchester United asset beyond Gameweek 25, Fernandes is the one, as he is just a minutes and fitness monster and there are rarely worries about an injury. I am talking about Fernandes in depth because I currently have Anthony Martial (£6.5m) in my team (in addition to Rashford and Shaw) and was contemplating whether I should get Fernandes or Antony (£7.3m) instead. While I was more open to Antony in my thread about Manchester United yesterday, I think Sancho’s threat to his expected minutes is significant enough to go for Bruno over the Brazilian. In case you wanted to read the thread, find it below:

Now I was fairly set on going for Fernandes before the second cup tie for Manchester United but at the moment I am 50-50 on whether to hold Martial or get the Portuguese playmaker in. There’s a few factors influencing my decision.

Firstly, Manchester United blank in Gameweek 25 and likely blank in Gameweek 28, too, so it is likely we might want to sell Fernandes in Gameweek 25 (team dependant, of course). So do I spend two additional transfers to get Fernandes in and out or just one transfer, when I might offload Martial in Gameweek 25?

The dilemma is therefore Martial + 4 points versus Fernandes. If they get the same minutes, I’m confident that Martial outperforms Fernandes. I think it is more likely going to be 90-100 minutes of Martial (30 + 60) versus 180 minutes of Bruno Fernandes in Double Gameweek 22 but since I’m going to captain (or Triple Captain) Rashford, I have to contemplate whether the additional transfer is worth it when United are likely to not have games in both Gameweek 25 and 28.

NKETIAH V ARSENAL MIDFIELDERS

FPL Gameweek 17 differentials: Nketiah can offer value

Eddie Nketiah (£6.7m) was someone I was very set on for my Martial replacement but Gabriel Jesus (£7.9m) tweeted yesterday that he is back on the grass – and the Arsenal assets you want, you are likely to hold until Gameweek 28. I am now wondering if it is better to just get two midfielders from the Gunners who I will set and forget.

I do think getting Nketiah over one of them is my preference so I will be following what Mikel Arteta says about Jesus’ return date in the press conference closely. It’s not like Bukayo Saka (£8.2m) and Martin Odegaard (£6.9m) are bad picks but given a choice, as of now I prefer Saka and Nketiah (I already own Ben White (£4.7m)).

While we’re on the topic of White and Martinelli, I wouldn’t move either of them out for another Arsenal player as they’re both first choice in my books and I think Martinelli’s underperformance since the restart is slightly exaggerated. His underlying numbers have been good from Gameweek 17 onwards and I think moving him out before a game against Seamus Coleman (£4.4m) would be a mistake.

TRIPLE CAPTAINCY CONUNDRUM

FPL Gameweek 10 tips: Dance like no one's watching 1

Now, very briefly, I will give my thoughts about the Triple Captain chip.

Earlier in the week, I was fairly sure about giving it to Erling Haaland (£12.2m) in Gameweek 23. I don’t worry too much about the match against a defensively astute Arsenal because I have a feeling it is the most motivated Manchester City players will be and I don’t dislike that as a game for City’s attackers. The game against Manchester United made me realize that quality opposition can definitely have a go against Arsenal. And the main thought in my head is Haaland is the best asset FPL has probably given to us in a decade. He can pretty much brace in any game, his upside is tremendous and since Manchester City don’t have an FA Cup replay, I’m not worried about the expected minutes. If a rest is to come, I think the game against Nottingham Forest – which is before the Champions League tie against RB Leipzig – looks the most likely.

The only reason we are not considering Haaland is Rashford’s form and the fixtures he has. A Saturday-Wednesday-Sunday turnaround for Manchester United in the coming week is very comfortable and a couple of factors have increased the urge to put the Triple Captain armband on Rashford. For starters, in my opinion, he’s a much better FPL asset when playing alongside Martial and the fixtures are just too good with two strong home games. You’d also slightly weigh in the extra point for a goal for Rashford and the additional clean sheet point and you do think he has a high floor as well as a high ceiling. I keep saying these things and then I say to myself, Haaland is the best FPL asset we’ve probably had in a decade – and it’s why I keep dilly-dallying between the two.

I think this is a decision I’ll probably make on Friday night but I do think both are good plays, so follow where your gut takes you with this one as I’m not against either call.

Really can't decide! Rashford is in the form of his life with 2 plum fixtures, but Haaland can haul against anyone, he could have easily scored a couple in the cup encounter with Arsenal.

Not much imo. Any future DGW combination for City is going to better than one with Arsenal in. A decent chance that 34 is ful WHU. The one thing I'm slightly wary of is the lack of recovery time between those GW34 fixtures as pointed out by Lord here:

Do people see the Everton Arsenal game now as a tough one for the Gunners against a fired up team and crowd, or will this actually play into their hands when Everton over-commit? I actually fear a bit for some of those attackers getting crocked by some big mistimed tackles…

Some interesting talk about the new manager bounce on here before. Basically it only tends to exist when the players have given up playing for their manager. I don't think that happened for Lampard - the players were still giving it all. They're just struggling because they're not good enough. Dyche might sort that out, but not in six days

    Seeing various TC Haaland Vs Rashford questions so here are my two cents;

    - Rashford (GW22) - Positives, aside from form and fixtures, are that not everyone will have the armband on him, some may stick to Haaland, some my go to Fernandes. Meaning the variance if he hauls and you TC will be greater for your rank. Cons, he's not Haaland.

    - Haaland (GW23) - Positives, he's Haaland, can score against most. Cons, his ownership will be 200% so you'll gain approx 1/3 of his points only. Arsenal away is tough, no matter how it's painted, motivated or not. He called out United as being the club he most wanted to score at and for the most part he was shackled. Arsenal have an even better defence. The majority of your eggs will be Vs Villa.

200% ownership thing makes it just so pointless and City will probably have a better double somewhere else.

Very good post but I would say one thing about EO: EO only matters on a TC if you are aiming to win a particular gameweek - which comes down to basically trying to win a weekly prize or a H2H match-up.

Aside from these very niche considerations, EO makes almost* no difference at all to the TC discussion.

The reason for this is quite simple - all you are doing with the TC is trying to find the single week in the season where having the extra 'player' makes a difference. When identifying the best player/GW combination in the season to have 3x a given player, all you are doing is looking for the single highest possible score so you can add it to your total over the course of the season.

Let's say it really was a coin flip - taking EO out of it, it really was a 50:50 call and both players perform equally well in their respective DGWs: If my rival and I own Rashford and Haaland and I TC Rashford this week and he gets 10x3 points, and my rival TCs Haaland next week and he gets 10x3, we will end up with the following (let's say the non captained player blanks in both scenarios to make it easier, and we both captain each other's TC - though the maths would work with any score):

      GW22: Me 30+2, him 20+2
      GW23: Me 20+2, him 30+2
      = even
By the time we get to the end of GW23 we have both come through the same period adding 10 to our scores, we both have/had the same players, we both used a chip. There was no gain whatsoever to me using a chip on a less popular captain option.

So all it comes down to is who you think scores the most, regardless of ownership. The * comes in when you genuinely believe that a low owned player has a realistic chance of outscoring an extremely popular captain in a nice DGW. E.g. Brighton get a DGW and you are convinced that Mitouma has the potential to outscore anything that Haaland can do in any of his known DGWs. The TC here gives you the opportunity to double down on your extremely differential captaincy pick. But this is only partly to do with ownership, it's still about who you think will score the most points in a singe GW.

Hey mate. I get what you're saying but this is based on the assumption you both captain (or TC) the same player though right? In the case of GW22, the armband will fluctuate making the difference for Rashford greater. Or am I misinterpreting it?

        1. _Make
          • 9 Years
          3 years, 3 months ago

Yeah my example was very simplistic because the post was long enough already! 🙂 But really I think it's all the same - what the chip comes down to in essence is 'pick the player you think will get the biggest score in any gameweek and get an extra share of him in that week'. Those extra points get added to your season total (I think we can be blinded by single GW totals)

If you pick well or luckily the extra share is worth say 15-20 points
If you pick poorly or unluckily the extra share is worth say 1-5 points

As I said, you can lean into extreme differentials with the TC if you genuinely spot a deep sleeper, to amplify the value of holding him, but most of the time you will be putting the TC on someone who other people are at least captaining. And you still need to think that player will outscore the best possible totals of the other popular players in future GWs, which is unlikely.

In this case I would only go for Rashford in 22 over Haaland in 23 if I thought Rashford would get the most points. And as it happens I do 🙂

I think you are both right. I am pretty sure Pras made a similar point on Burning Questions a few episodes ago.

Treating TC in absolute isolation; EO is irrelevant. It only becomes relevant when you consider captain variations between different FPL players, so really the “difference” then is your captain choice not your choice to use TC or not.

What if the question was Rashford in 22 vs Haaland in some future DGW?

More complicated to answer. Is it too big a gamble to hold the chip and hope for good fixtures?

This is the alternative, however my opinion is (which could be wrong), on any week where Haaland is worth a TC, he'll be captained by everyone else anyway. Always limiting him to 1/3 additional points.

My argument falls down if everyone decides to cap Rashford in GW22.

The other question is - does TC really matter? People dunk on bench boost but it's a far more useful chip than TC. A player could easily get injured early on in the first game, not play both, or even get a red card and miss the second game AND get 3x negative points.

There is a strong case for not overthinking it - if you have a good player with a DGW and good fixtures vs a better player with a DGW and worse fixtures it's so close to 50:50 with these other variables that you could just back your instincts and not go far wrong (and besides they could end up matching each other, or as good as).

Would you rather bench boost this team this week and triple captain next week / hold for another week
Or triple captain Rashford this week and bench boost next week? (-8 required to get to this team. Would be a -4 if no bench boost)

Bruno would be KDB next week.

    Kepa Ward
    Trippier Botman Gabriel Saliba Shaw
    Bruno Rashford Mitoma Rodrigo Martinelli
    Kane Haaland Toney

There will be a bigger dgw later on. I'd save BB until then. As for tc, go with your gut.

Obviously the O.G. Fred from Brazil.

Always loved the idea that with all these exotic nicknames that Brazilian footballers tend to have, he settled on the one that sounds like a middle age local authority councillor

2 FTs, 0.3 itb - not sure what to do here. Have lots of players blanking in 25. Plan is to get Saka & Odegaard/Eddie in.

    Kepa
    Trippier White Estupinan
    Rashford Bruno KDB Mitoma
    Martial Haaland Kane

    Ward Botman Pereira Stones*

    A) Botman to Mings (prepping 25)
    B) Kane to Eddie, Pereira to Saka
    C) KDB to Saka
    D) something else?

I have funds to do Bruno + Mitoma to Saka Odegaard in 23 if I get the .1 from Mings. Not sure I want to get rid of Bruno, though.

    Yo friends!

    Kepa

    Trippier Estupinan Shaw

    Rash ( C ) Mahrez Fernandes Rodrigo

    Toney Kane Haaland

    Sub - Ward - Martinelli - White - Akanji

GTG ? I want Marti in my team, but who to sub ??

benching Kane isn't out of the question if you really want to play Martinelli

There’s no question that Bruno will be a great asset for GW22, but it’s really about the compromises needed to get there. Salah >Bruno is a no- brainier, but is it really worth spending two FTs on a KDB Hokey Cokey, or sacrificing Kane/KDB and/or taking hits to get there? It’s also worth keeping in mind that BGW25 is only 2FTs away, with BGW28 and possible DGW opportunities also looming, so there is a bigger picture to consider.

All of this is, of course, team dependent, and in my case I’m leaning towards getting Martinez this week, so I can afford Odegaard in GW23, whilst holding on to players with a fixture in GW25.

Who are you selling to get Martinez? Shaw + Martinez then I assume with Rashford as the third asset.

Perisic. It’s the only way I can get a United DGW player whilst generating the funds to go Andreas>Odegaard in GW23. I could go with Kepa>DDG and Gnonto>Nketiah, but I prefer to hang on to Kepa and Gnonto, plus I’m worried Jesus might be back by DGW25.

How's she cooking? 0.3 in the bank, 0FT

    Kepa
    Trippier Shaw Mee
KDB Bruno Rashford (c) Almiron March
    Haaland Kane

    Ward Mitrovic White Patterson

    GW23 - Bruno, Almiron -> Saka, Odegaard (-4)
    GW23 - Haaland (TC)

My move this week will be Salah to Bruno but I would like to do Martinelle to Saka (for free) also. As I think Saka will outscore Martinelle at the end of the season. I know it's reasonable just to do the Bruno move only but can't I just also do the Saka move or would be that stupid and unpatiented?

Martial has DGW and could outscore Nketiah this week. Salah to Bruno is easy yes for me.

    Kepa
    Trippier White Shaw
    KDB Rashford Martinelli Almiron
    Haaland Kane Mitro

    Ward Ake Andreas Patterson

1.9m ITB with 2 Free Transfers.

Which option would you go with ?

    A) Almiron, Kane > Bruno, Nketiah
    B) Almiron, Mitro > Bruno, Sturridge

    Cheers.
