Liverpool v Everton is the focus of our latest Scout Notes piece as we look back on the main Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Anfield.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture this season.

Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) scored his first Premier League goal since Boxing Day in the Merseyside derby.

The Egyptian had gone five games without finding the net prior to Gameweek 23 but rediscovered his rhythm against Everton.

He took five shots in the box, the same amount he managed in his previous four matches combined, with three hitting the target.

It might be too soon to suggest that Salah is ‘back’, yet seeing him on the scoresheet again feels timely with Liverpool’s Double Gameweek 25 on the horizon. As a result, Kevin De Bruyne (£12.4m) owners will surely be eyeing up a switch after the next round of fixtures.

Salah’s breakaway goal – which arrived just 13 seconds after James Tarkowski (£4.2m) had hit the post at the other end – was followed by Cody Gakpo’s (£7.7m) first strike for Liverpool, as he tapped in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£7.3m) deflected cross.

The Dutchman has been adapting to the rigours of English football since his January arrival but looked more comfortable playing through the middle, flanked by Salah and Darwin Nunez (£8.7m).

“A good performance. The way he set up the chance for Darwin, he had other moments like this where he came out under pressure and then there was a foul and we got a free-kick. He did extremely well under massive pressure in the centre. In the end, it was not the most difficult goal he ever scored, but it is exactly the goal each striker is dreaming of when it didn’t happen for a while, probably. Both goals were, for both players, really important. The next one who could have needed something like that is probably Darwin; the chance he had was a really good one. Anyway, it was obviously Darwin with an insane run for the first goal and a super pass.” – Jurgen Klopp on the importance of Cody Gakpo getting his first goal for the club

Darwin supplied the assist for the opener but later missed a decent chance and was withdrawn on 69 minutes, as Diogo Jota (£8.8m) made his long-awaited return from injury. Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) also appeared off the bench shortly after, while Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) was an unused substitute, adding to Liverpool’s depth as we enter this busy stage of the season.

It has been a miserable 2023 for Liverpool so far, with damaging defeats against Brentford, Brighton and Hove Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers, but the ease in which they were able to overcome Everton will give them a lift. A clean sheet is also a welcome sight, given that they have already conceded 28 goals this season, two more than in the entirety of last term when they finished second.

“It felt like us, it looked like us. The result is a massive relief. Tonight everyone starts believing a little bit more again. We have to keep going. The performance was a statement for us that we can do this. We had to play our game and that was pretty much the case for 95 minutes and that’s why we deserved the points. To get out of our situation we need performances. I saw the same [swagger] but we have to prove it. We have to carry on. We were lucky [Tarkowski’s header hit the post]. Darwin full throttle. The second goal was a wonderful counter attack as well. We were so dominant. I don’t know the figures but it must have been 70% possession. The better you play the more likely you will score. The whole performance was extremely important for us because we needed to make a statement.” – Jurgen Klopp

Sean Dyche’s reign as Everton manager got off to a perfect start with a win over Arsenal in Gameweek 22, but they reverted to type at Anfield. They were careless in possession and struggled up front in the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m), who missed out through injury.

Youngster Ellis Simms (£4.5m) replaced him, making only his second Premier League start, but he found it difficult with little service and was eventually withdrawn on the hour mark.

“Great game for his development, it was a tight call on that one with Neal [Maupay] as well with his extra experience. But he is a young man earning his spurs.” – Sean Dyche on Ellis Simms

“We are just watching it and monitoring it, obviously he needs to get himself right, not just the injury but generally. He has had a tough time so we need to monitor him.” – Sean Dyche on Dominic Calvert-Lewin

In truth, the game told us little about Double Gameweek 25 targets, although Tarkowski did hit the post in the first half, having scored from another set-piece situation last time out. As it stands, he is the go-to Everton option at just £4.2m.

The Toffees now have a vital game at home to managerless Leeds United on Saturday, before their Gameweek 25 double-header.

“There is more to come, I’m sure of that but we have got to play as well. The next step is to play and be brave with the ball. We have given a lot of information to the players and it is a lot for them to take in. There is work to be done. Last week we beat Arsenal and I wasn’t jumping for joy. No lack of effort or work ethic, it’s still tough coming here but they [Liverpool] are a great side.” – Sean Dyche

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Gomez, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson (Milner 80), Bajcetic (Keita 90); Salah (Elliott 90), Darwin (Jota 69), Gakpo (Firmino 80)

Everton XI: Pickford; Coleman, Coady, Tarkowski, Mykolenko; McNeil (Maupay 78), Doucoure, Gueye, Onana (Davies 78), Iwobi; Simms (Gray 61)

Has Gakpoo removed the second o from his name? I guess we'll get a better picture before the double this upcoming GW.

I kept Darwin for weeks and even.had him in the starting 11. Okay, substituted again, and now with Jota and Bobby back in action maybe with even less minutes. But will keep him for the DGW and maybe bring Salah back in as well.

Otherwise, Bajcetic looked the opposite of pathetic. For only 4.4 an option for the FPL bench?

Money isn't an issue for most people so I don't think you need to search for budget mids tbh, and if you are then Pereira still seems the best one. My cheapest mid is currently MacAllister (5.4m) and I have 4m itb and I'll actually free up more money after I use my 2FTs this week!

I basically agree that there is no need to worry to.much about money this season. Have taken a few price drops already (with Darwin, Castagne & co.) since the restart on boxing day.and as.you around 4m in the bank.

Haaland and Kane are the only expensive players in my squad. Not sure if I want to bring in KDB anymore, but it might be good to have the option for a big midfielder as well especially with Salah's potential resurrection. And at some point it could be worth upgrading the defence with James, TAA and other premium players.

But I agree, many other options in the budget midfield bench position and no need to gamble, not yet.

My plan is to roll the FT this week and do Shaw + Bruno -> Tarkowski + Salah next gw.

    Kepa
    White Tarkowski Bueno/Lewis
    Salah Saka Odegaard Andreas
    Kane Haaland Havertz
    - Trippier Rashford

However I feel this team will make it hard to get

Why wasn't TAA's assist given? I know it was about 'not the intended target' but it was a cross with the intention of someone getting on the end of it, and no different for me than a corner finding a target.

Absolute joke. FPL towers either on some heavy drugs or just not Trent-owners. Idiotic decision for sure.

Not an owner, and very little interest in Liverpool all round, but this is v worrying as an FPL fan. And that's coming from someone who got a v jammy assist earlier this season from a saved Kane shot!

For me it's just that they spend time and energy on trying to find ways to take away points that is frustrating. The games biggest issue is hardly that too many assists is given. Completely waste of time and focus imo. The Saka assist that was also taken away earlier this season is another example of what makes this game a bit less interesting.

I might quit FPL after this season, it's just not going in the right direction.

Also tell me how FPL-towers knows Trents intentions? The ball travels straightly towards both Robertson and Gakpo, is there really a way to figure out if Trent meant to pass it to one or the other? Complete bullocks.

Using the corner example again, the ball is just placed into a dangerous area where any of 3 or 4 players could score from it. If an assist is given for that, then it clearly should be given for that.

Looking on the fpl twitter, they claim that the ball was diverted from its initial path, but given that I didn't even notice that on the highlights indicates that it was clearly not significant enough to warrant removing the assist.

      2. Arteta
        • 10 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

They don't know Trent's intentions. It can be 50:50 or 33:33:33, if you want to include Nunez in this mess as well. They are just predicting that his pass wasn't meant for Gakpo, which is only a guess and far from a fact. If they weren't 100% sure about it, why even change it?

We've seen assists given for so much less in the past. If you read the rules, you know that sometimes they follow them and sometimes they don't.

    4. Arteta
      • 10 Years
      3 years, 2 months ago

Because they're incompetent and inconsistent. They should never take away crystal clear assists just like that, especially not after thorough review. What's the point of all the modern technology in the game, if they don't know how to use it correctly and fairly? The mind boggles.

It pains me seeing Mahrez in the bus team after -not- doing the Fernandes to Mahrez move for last gameweek.

    Stick with Fernandes or switch?

That spot would probably be the one that goes to Salah if bringing him in for the DGW (I don't know yet) - but just not sure, since Mahrez has good fixtures coming up still (GW24: NFO, GW25: BOU, GW27: CRY). Some are weak on his flank too.

Obviously not making moves till after midweeks.

I'm still on KDB and with 2 FT for this GW really thinking about getting Mahrez for him now. Will be brutally punished probably so don't know yet.

Think the time to move for Mahrez has been and gone personally. City back with CL fixtures next week and we all know how important Mahrez has always been there. Quite a busy schedule for City in general coming up too so could be a lot of rotation on the whole. If you're going to be depending on him for GW25 I think it's risky

Thank you. I think (hope) you're right. If I knew Mahrez would start every PL fixture I'd be more on it, but this is why I'm hesitant. (Hell I though he may not start Villa.)

Look I mean there's always a chance of course that I'm wrong and Pep continues to play him in nearly every game, he has been their most consistent attacker. But still City will be playing every 3-4 days for the next 2-3 weeks and he's 32 next week so he will need a rest, and Forest and/or Bournemouth makes the most sense

    3. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years

I'm wary of bringing Mahrez in now with UCL about to resume, although perhaps with a slightly slimmed down squad there aren't actually many alternatives. Do you think Bernardo could fill in there still?

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Also wary for same reasons, why I didn't get him in first place. Hard to say what Pep is thinking - but surely Mahrez can't start/play tons of mins in every fixture. Just depends who fills kn where and in which competition. Not sure on Bernardo!

    4. Lord of Ings
      • 10 Years
      3 years, 2 months ago

Still believe Mahrez will start most games. Pep doesn’t have many alternatives on the right side really, it’s just Alvarez who can play there and Bernardo hasn’t played on the wings for ages now. Either way the upside on Mahrez easily outweighs the risk of him getting benched personally. Upcoming fixtures are far too good and he could easily bag a 15-20 pter in any game.

    Gd morning

Can easily get Felix for Mitro but Kane to Felix will allow funds for Salah for the blanks etc.

Kane fixtures are very good tho.

    Wat would you do?

Bare in mind that Brentford has a dgw27 so i guess you would want to get Toney soon. You will need some money to upgrade Mitro to Toney.I think i would keep both of them for now.

That move leave about 5m in the bank so allows upgrades elsewhere. Like toney or a pool defender etc.

Salah will be a popular capt that wk.

I'm thinking something similar and have been back and forth all day. Spurs v West Ham could be very open with Lloris and Bentacur gone. I also think Chelsea will finally have a big haul against Southampton and Felix looked great last game.

I want to sacrifice Haaland before Kane, with Champions league now on, he's a greater risk of rotation over Kane, and he's lost pens.
      I probably won't though.

I had a mad couple of minutes there.
          Very unlikely I'd say.
However, it is tempting, knowing I can WC him back in after a few.
I'd be gambling on him being rested for both NFO and BOU, and whoever takes his place scoring

I'm certainly feeling more hopeful as a Leeds fan now. Wasn't a whole lot in common between that defensive performance & the one against Arsenal. Could be that they regress into the same old pattern of tight at home, rubbish away?

Yeah I'm thinking of not getting Tarkowski now and getting Trent. I have 3m itb to do Botman to Trent.

Okay I'm now paying the price for my GW23 transfers because my team is a bit of a mess leading into GW25.

    Kepa Ward
    White Bueno TRIPPIER SHAW BURN
    Mahrez Saka FERNANDES RASHFORD ALMIRON
    Haaland Kane Nketiah

I can roll this week if I choose. But then I'm looking at a 4 point hit of Fernandes, Kane, Burn > Salah, Darwin, Tarkowski in GW25 for a 4 point hit to field 10.

Or is it better to just FH in 25 and use my FT in 24 to prepare for GW28. I'm leaning FH at the moment tbh.

Why? I'm going to play White, Trippier, Shaw this week. Don't need Tark this week.

If I make a transfer this week it's to buy someone who has a fixture in 28.

    2. The Mentaculus

Very different plans from mine, but I think I prefer -4 to field 10 over FH. Personally I would be looking at Bruno, Almiron, Shaw out, but that would obviously not lend itself to Salah & Darwin

        Yeah both lines look decent.

Question is really on the aftermath of 25. Do I want to have Salah and Darwin until GW28 or not?

Missing a couple of decent Kane fixtures that way. Are you going off him due to Spurs form / Bentancur injury, or just see it as a necessary sacrifice? To be honest I'm so unimpressed with Spurs this season that I'm constantly itching to ditch him for someone more explosive - had Darwin 1st half of season, now Felix & Iheanacho turning my head. Trying to stay disciplined and stick with Kane for now

Who would be your 'must haves' on a FH? The three best Arsenal (you probably have 2/3 of the best already and White could easily outscore Odegaard) maybe three Liverpool. That's going to be where your points ceiling comes from and you can get close to that with a -4. In your position I think I would do that and save the FH. It's probably not going to be the highest-scoring DGW to attack with a FH vs what you already have or could have.

It's true. I already have 3 Arsenal, Haaland, Mahrez. Those are basically the main things needed.

I could take a hit for Darwin, Salah and Tarkowski. Field 10. And it's a pretty decent core.

The other thing is - it's not a true BGW so fielding

Ahh stupid formatting - basically people will be fielding up to, potentially, 30 players using bench boost. You will have more starters than 11 given the doublers (assuming they play twice), most people will be on a hazy spectrum of between 10 and say 15 'effective' starters - effective counting doublers), so the mental block of having blank spots in your team will be lessened.

What to do, the last 2 GW's I would've been better off saving. Should I sit tight this week?

    Kepa (Ward)
    Trip / Schar / Shaw (Lewis/Bueno)
Saka / Ode / Rash / KDB (Pereira)
    Nket / Kane / Haaland

    Nothing seems obvious this week
