News broke on Tuesday evening that the most-bought Fantasy Premier League (FPL) asset of Gameweek 26, Ivan Toney (£7.6m), has reportedly admitted breaching betting rules.

Toney’s stock was about to rise further in FPL, with Leicester City’s elimination from the FA Cup meaning that Brentford avoid a ‘blank’ in Gameweek 28.

The Bees also have Double Gameweeks to come on either side of that clash with the Foxes:

WHAT ARE THE CHARGES?

The striker has been charged over 262 alleged breaches of the Football Association’s (FA) betting rules.

A total of 232 of them had been put to the England international in November 2022, with a further 30 arriving the next month.

The offences were alleged to have occurred between February 2017 and January 2021.

WHAT HAS TONEY ADMITTED TO?

The Daily Mail has been on top of this story since it was first reported in November, and it was their reporter Matt Hughes who brought us the latest developments on Tuesday evening.

Hughes reports that Toney is “understood to have admitted many of the charges in his response to the FA but is contesting others”.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Sky Sports reports that the FA will now “go through [Toney’s] response before issuing a hearing date”.

An Independent Regulatory Commission will then deliver a verdict on the charges and issue a punishment if deemed necessary (and as seems likely).

HOW LONG COULD TONEY’S BAN BE?

Most outlets covering the story agree on the likelihood of a “lengthy ban”, with Sky Sports News anticipating that Toney could be suspended for “at least six months”.

WHEN WOULD THE BAN START?

Notice above we said “months” and not “games” – so it’ll be in the interests of Brentford for some of that purported ban to cover the off-season (May 29-August 11) in order to minimise the impact of his absence from the team.

Most newspapers concur that Toney has admitted some of the charges, that a lengthy ban is expected and that the suspension will kick in before the end of 2022/23.

But exactly when the ban will start is the million-dollar question for FPL managers and one we don’t yet have an answer to.

The Daily Mail reports that an FA disciplinary hearing is “imminent” but Sky Sports suggest that “it could take the FA several weeks to digest Toney’s response, which means a hearing is most likely to take place in April”.

One of their reporters repeated that April estimate on Wednesday.

If Sky Sports are correct and he’s free to play until April at the earliest, Toney will be eligible for Gameweeks 26-28.

Brentford’s Double Gameweek 29 fixtures take place on April 1+5, however.

PAST PRECEDENTS

Kieran Trippier and Joey Barton are two of the more high-profile examples of recent years where a player has fallen foul of the FA’s betting rules.

While Barton’s offences were deemed of a more serious nature (he bet on his own team to lose on a handful of occasions), he seems to have been on a similar timeline (December-February-April) as Toney.

WHEN WILL WE HEAR FROM THOMAS FRANK?

Brentford are in Gameweek 26 action on Monday night against fellow west Londoners Fulham, so head coach Thomas Frank should be facing the media as normal on Friday afternoon.

He’s unlikely to shed much light on the Toney case, however, with it being an active investigation.

WHO WILL TAKE TONEY’S PLACE?

We’ll have more Brentford coverage to come in the coming days but in the event of any Toney suspension, Yoane Wissa (£5.3m) could be the big winner with regards to game-time.

Thomas Frank scholars will know that tactically, he tends to use a 3-5-2 in matches against the so-called ‘bigger’ clubs and a 4-3-3 in the easier-on-paper fixtures.

Wissa is usually the fall guy when there is a change to a wing-back system, with Toney and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.8m) lining up no matter what the shape.

Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.2m), Kevin Schade (£4.9m) and Mikkel Damsgaard (£5.0m) could in turn get a look-in alongside Mbeumo and Wissa, in matches where a front three is used.

Mbeumo, of course, will stand to capitalise on penalty-taking duties if and when Toney is banned.

So unless Nketiah (C) turns up tonight, the only good thing about using my free hit in 25 was not having to carry any liverpool dead weight post the DGW.

Would you consider WC'ing this team, knowing I can't FH28?

    Kepa Ward
    Trippier Botman Shaw Estupinan Gabriel
    Rashford Mahrez Martinelli Mitoma Bruno
    Nketiah Haaland Kane

I would have 3 FTs between now and 28, and not opposed to hits if needed, but not keen on taking hits for a player just so I have someone playing in the BGW.

        Would most likely be GW29.

Aim would be to bring in Saka, Toney & either Ode / Mac Allister for Martinelli, Nketiah & Mahrez over the next 3.

Sounds good. Probably can save the WC then - not worth it for at most 2 more changes (Ward & Kane)

True. Although I would prefer to have at least 12/13 doublers on BB. That's the only issue

Even in that case maybe -4 / -8 (across 3 GWs) is preferable to WC?

Yeah. I could end up with

                Kepa
                Trippier Shaw Estu
                Rash Saka March Mitoma
                Toney Haaland Kane

                in 27 for a -4.

The week after, Mahrez to Ode and play 9 for the BGW.

Sounds good whilst saving the WC? Only risk is light on Brentford.

Nice. Ward - Raya could pay off over 27 & 29 if you want a piece of Brenford defence

I'm not so sure, Brentford double in 27 are both away, and in 29 their games are harder than Leicesters imo (Brighton & Utd vs Palace & Villa)

Yeah its a close call. Not too optimistic about CS in 29 but Raya is easily capable of 5-6pts even without CS. 27 looks like a good chance of double CS - they are tighter at home but these are dreamy fixtures for defenders.

I also played FH this gw and it turns out that the advantage we have now is that we have strong gw 27/29 teams so I’m not WCing for sure cause my team is 3-4 players away from the template WC

Ok, so (this could be a long one...):

There's no standout TC candidate in 29, right? But Haaland (ful + WHU/bha), Rashford (AVL + bha/CHE), and Kane (liv + sou/NEW) all look like strong candidates in 34.

BB I think is best in 29 or 34, but given TC situation, I think you should aim for 29.

FH in DGW37 is my preferred option since its hard to know in advance who will have something to play for, who will be on the beach. BGW32 is another option with BHA, MCI very likely to blank, plus potentially MUN/TOT/ARS/NEW/CHE.

Your squad doesn't look like it needs an urgent WC, but if you decide to BB29, then work back from your ideal team for that, ensure you have decent cover for 28 (9 seems fine to me), and maybe play it in 27 or now (once you've compared the WC team to current one for this GW)

I like it. But still dont think WC now will be better than WC29. Depending on current team ofc. International break doomed to mess up something plus uncertainty on toney. I really like setting up a perfect gw29 team, with details on rest of season more clear. planning into blank 32 (use FH or navigate around it and save FH for a double)

Twitter is having a meltdown over WCing this week ... I am looking at most people's current teams and they are pretty solid this Game Week

All well and good for planning for 28 & 29, but doing it this week seems counter intuitive when you compare a GW 26 WC team and the team many have this week ... and will all those Brighton and Brentford players you get in this week stay injury free, not get banned and avoid rotation in GW 27.

The force is strong with this one 🙂

Does that outweigh the benefit of getting more info and delaying WC to 27?

Which you will probably need by going early, I don't even know if I want or need to WC and I certainly don't want to make that decision this week on the basis of an extra transfer in 29, but many are playing a FH in there somewhere too.

More importantly I want to see if Toney gets carded this week, if so he could be that transfer out of the WC team.

I understand the arguments but I just spent some time on Twitter and it is quite dangerous with the pack mentality and so many convincing themselves of the same thing

.... no big deal, just thought I would make the observation

Im just reluctant to transfer out an injury free player with one 'tougher' fixture for another injury free player with the 'easier' fixture.
On paper it looks good, but no guarantees they outscore them.

I rather WC a single week player,or injured player out for a dgwer in 27
Outcome not guaranteed as well, but more chance to it imo.

Why do I type injury free when Ive just could have used 'fit'...

Thoughts on Barnes over Maddison? Will Maddison be fit anyway?

What would worry me a little about Barnes is: he can have the odd game where he is completely anonymous. Maddison tends to always be involved in their play. Sometimes, the game can bypass Barnes.

      Rodgers on Monday:

        Last night:

"He should be fine. Because he’s virtually done no training for a couple of weeks, the idea was to get a few good days of training into him on Monday and Tuesday. He’ll train for the remainder of the week and he should be fine, fingers crossed, for the weekend [away to Southampton]."

I totally agree with this. And whilst someone signing Maddison may not worry about this, it doesnt fill me with confidence if i was to go ahead and sign a player, where the underlying team is really so weak.

Planning my transfers in prep for 28 but which of this lot would you prioritise to leave for GW26?

    Mahrez?

    Alisson
    Saliba Trippier Tarko
    Mahrez Martinelli Saka Bruno Rashy
    Kane Haaland

    BENCH: Ward Gnonto Bueno Thomas

I’ve worked it out, 5 transfers and 2 hits across a couple of gameweek and I have 10 players in 28.

That means I’ll have 10 players with 2 fixtures in 29 (if no more transfers).

Worth bench boosting in 29 and saving FH?

      I’m thinking this.

      10 players in 28.
Bench boost in 29 (10 doublers)
Free hit in 32 or 34.

      No Wildcard left.

In fact, I’ll transfer in James in 29 for free. 11 doublers.

        Raya
        Estupinan
        Watkins
        Rico H
        Maddison in.

        Already have Toney and Mitoma.

        Shaw or James in 29.

I'm comfortably riding through to 28 without using chips , team is well set to do so with possibly 1or max 2 hits to field an effective 11 in 28 and 5 doublers in 27.
Yeah I never lumped in on Liverpool but if your team is "threadbare" then you have to be proactive so GL all Wild Carders whether it be this gw week or next.

I jumped on Liverpool and still look ok for 28 with 1 hit.

      Fielding 10.

I imagine a lot will free hit so I expect a red arrow but I will make those points up when I free hit later

Fellow Akanji owners, here's yet another reason to jump ship:

Guardiola on Aymeric Laporte availability: "He's back since yesterday [Monday]. Yesterday for the first time he was back [in training]. He trained with us. He's back."

Who is the better option out of:

    A....mee
    B...estupinan

Mee will mean I field 11 in gw28

Estu gives me 10 in gw28 - but a better double to possibly bench boost in 29

    Thanks

Would have been Estupian but with Brentford playing in 28 I would go Mee

Hmm ok BB in 29 not easy then , Estupian probably

After an illuminating reply from The Mentaculus here, I've decided to WC now or 27, then BB 29, TC 34, FH 37.

Would you WC the former to the latter this week?

Now, with £0.2 in the bank:
    Ramsdale / Ward
TAA, Trippier, Burn / Castagne, Kilman
    Salah, Saka, Rashford, Ødegaard, Mitoma
    Haaland, Kane / Greenwood

To this, £2.7 in the bank:
    Raya / Ward
Trippier, Gabriel, Mee / Estupiñán, Burn
Saka, Ødegaard, Maddison, Rashford / Mitoma
    Haaland, Kane, Watkins

Hello again. Think the new defence looks substantially better for this week. Would start Estupinan over Trippier also (edging slightly out of the "never bench" category just for fixtures like City [A] since Newcastle aren't really finishing the chances he's creating at the mo)
