News broke on Tuesday evening that the most-bought Fantasy Premier League (FPL) asset of Gameweek 26, Ivan Toney (£7.6m), has reportedly admitted breaching betting rules.

Toney’s stock was about to rise further in FPL, with Leicester City’s elimination from the FA Cup meaning that Brentford avoid a ‘blank’ in Gameweek 28.

The Bees also have Double Gameweeks to come on either side of that clash with the Foxes:

WHAT ARE THE CHARGES?

The striker has been charged over 262 alleged breaches of the Football Association’s (FA) betting rules.

A total of 232 of them had been put to the England international in November 2022, with a further 30 arriving the next month.

The offences were alleged to have occurred between February 2017 and January 2021.

WHAT HAS TONEY ADMITTED TO?

The Daily Mail has been on top of this story since it was first reported in November, and it was their reporter Matt Hughes who brought us the latest developments on Tuesday evening.

Hughes reports that Toney is “understood to have admitted many of the charges in his response to the FA but is contesting others”.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Sky Sports reports that the FA will now “go through [Toney’s] response before issuing a hearing date”.

An Independent Regulatory Commission will then deliver a verdict on the charges and issue a punishment if deemed necessary (and as seems likely).

HOW LONG COULD TONEY’S BAN BE?

Most outlets covering the story agree on the likelihood of a “lengthy ban”, with Sky Sports News anticipating that Toney could be suspended for “at least six months”.

WHEN WOULD THE BAN START?

Notice above we said “months” and not “games” – so it’ll be in the interests of Brentford for some of that purported ban to cover the off-season (May 29-August 11) in order to minimise the impact of his absence from the team.

Most newspapers concur that Toney has admitted some of the charges, that a lengthy ban is expected and that the suspension will kick in before the end of 2022/23.

But exactly when the ban will start is the million-dollar question for FPL managers and one we don’t yet have an answer to.

The Daily Mail reports that an FA disciplinary hearing is “imminent” but Sky Sports suggest that “it could take the FA several weeks to digest Toney’s response, which means a hearing is most likely to take place in April”.

One of their reporters repeated that April estimate on Wednesday.

If Sky Sports are correct and he’s free to play until April at the earliest, Toney will be eligible for Gameweeks 26-28.

Brentford’s Double Gameweek 29 fixtures take place on April 1+5, however.

PAST PRECEDENTS

Kieran Trippier and Joey Barton are two of the more high-profile examples of recent years where a player has fallen foul of the FA’s betting rules.

While Barton’s offences were deemed of a more serious nature (he bet on his own team to lose on a handful of occasions), he seems to have been on a similar timeline (December-February-April) as Toney.

WHEN WILL WE HEAR FROM THOMAS FRANK?

Brentford are in Gameweek 26 action on Monday night against fellow west Londoners Fulham, so head coach Thomas Frank should be facing the media as normal on Friday afternoon.

He’s unlikely to shed much light on the Toney case, however, with it being an active investigation.

WHO WILL TAKE TONEY’S PLACE?

We’ll have more Brentford coverage to come in the coming days but in the event of any Toney suspension, Yoane Wissa (£5.3m) could be the big winner with regards to game-time.

Thomas Frank scholars will know that tactically, he tends to use a 3-5-2 in matches against the so-called ‘bigger’ clubs and a 4-3-3 in the easier-on-paper fixtures.

Wissa is usually the fall guy when there is a change to a wing-back system, with Toney and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.8m) lining up no matter what the shape.

Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.2m), Kevin Schade (£4.9m) and Mikkel Damsgaard (£5.0m) could in turn get a look-in alongside Mbeumo and Wissa, in matches where a front three is used.

Mbeumo, of course, will stand to capitalise on penalty-taking duties if and when Toney is banned.

Maybe they got triple Poole, Mahrez etc
If you feel you need a 12/16 point hit to right your wrongs
This is a time where having bench dilemmas is good for me because I can do -4 hits and still have a strong team

Because they are overloaded with Liverpool v City, have no Brighton or Brentford, have sub optimal 3 Arsenal players and have Mahrez. Also WC in 26 lets you carry 2 free transfers into 28 blank week

    Is anyone looking at

    Bb29 / free hit 32 / Wildcard 34

    I can have

    3 x dgws for gw27
    10 players for gw28
12 doublers plus haaland saka and white for bb29

    With just a few hits

And then batter the chips from 32 onwards. Thanks

I would play your WC chip in GW26 with plans if not already made for
        GW27 DGW
GW28 BGW - although much better after yesterday FA cup games more teams to select
GW29 DGW - possible another chip with BB

    Cheers Neale!

If Toney's banned for YCs or betting, he becomes a priority exit for Watkins and I'll keep Kane

    Current team, with 2 FTs:

    Kepa
    James White Akanji
    Mitoma (V)Saka Odegaard (C)Rashford
    Haaland Kane Toney

    Sanchez Mahrez Trippier Schar

I'm coming around to something like this:

    GW26: Mahrez + Akanji > Maddison + Mee
    GW27: Roll
GW28: Kane to Watkins, fielding XI
    BB29: Odegaard + White > Bruno + Estupinan

    BB29:
    Kepa | Sanchez
    James Trippier Mee Schar Estupinan
(C)Maddison Bruno Rash Mitoma | Saka
    (V)Watkins | Toney Haaland

Shaw back in GW 30 vs Everton, Kane back in GW31 vs Bournemouth

        Thanks, Debauchy 🙂

Yeah, but that injury risk applies almost every week now, with the many Cup and European games. I'll just be sure to wait for pressers before any move

I can delay the BB to GW34 if needed, but there'll be 2 FTs there anyway, and I can keep both Arsenal assets to replace any injured/suspended player

I've had many experiences with things somehow still falling apart in my FPL seasons, so I won't be the first to jump in with hope. Just a plan while watching for changes

Tempted to sell James or Schar, even, but that might be counterproductive

        How's your plan coming along?

Seems unlikely now. Maybe still a small chance Southampton (A) moves from 28 to 29, but that's not even a confirmed blank til tonight's cup games have been played. Tokvam gives it a probability of 5%:

Will people FH for the blank?

I could get 10 with 2FT. Would get rid of Mahrez and maybe Darwin, but not too sure if I want to play 5-2-2. Cant see that many points there.

    Saliba Bueno Mings Trippier Tark
    Saka

Got your wildcard? I'd happily lose double Pool, Tark, Mings, Bueno, Ward, Nketiah and Mahrez here... For different reasons

That's two reasons to WC here, for me:
      - Set yourself up for double GWs and blanks with some great long-term assets
      - Clear out some dodgy assets

      Trickier without a WC though

Great work Neale. Just one thing to note, I read the Sky article earlier which has since been updated, but earlier on it said that they expect he could face a minimum 6 months ban IF he bet on any of his own teams while at them, and that they also take every case like this on its own right (rather than looking at previous incidents for precedence).

Maybe something changed for them to take that out or they have information and know that that's part of the charges but just something to keep in mind (although given the number of charges against him, even if he didn't do that then it's probably still a fairly likely timeframe)

Good spot, Natedog! Yeah, those two Boston lads varied wildly in ban length so there is probably all sorts of stuff taken into consideration, including punting against your own team (as Barton did).

The player who has accumulated little to no points all season, been injured or rested a lot, playing with a team in crisis versus two of the in-form defenders in the league, who will probably go on a run now that their midfield playmaker has returned and are still on target to finish top 4. Let me think about this one.

    Raya - Ward

    Rashford - Saka - Ode - March - Mitoma
    Watkins - Toney - Haaland

    GW27 (3X BRE and 3X BRI so 6 doubles)
    GW28 Mitoma/March to Maddison (10 players out BGW28)
GW29 Gabriel and Ode to Shaw and Bruno (Only Saka and Haaland dont have double) Bench boost time.

Think I’m going for cheaper options where possible even though I’ll have enough in bank. Never know when I need those extra 1-1,5m

    Mainly thinking of:

    March ahead of MacAllister
    Pinnock ahead of Mee
    Botman ahead of Schar
    Ward ahead of Kepa

    Are you thinking similar

Agree with Pinnock/Henry and Botman picks. I don't think you necessarily need to skimp on March and Ward. U would pay the extra 0.3 for Mac Allister pens and majority of the time plays #10. I just don't rate Leicesters defence at all

IMO March and Mitoma are about the same. Mac is a risk because he might not play attacking enough.

If Estupinan is fit, it should boost Mac's chances of playing as a 10 since Groß won't be needed to cover LB & can slot in alongside Caicedo again

Will you wildcard this team? I am considering using FTs and a couple of hits. But, then again, a wildcard could give more points. What do you think?

    Kepa, Ward
    Trippier, Shaw, Trent, Tarkowski, Patterson
    Saka, Odegaard, Rashford, Mahrez, Salah
    Haaland, Mitrovic, Nketiah

Players I definitely need to sell are Trent, Mahrez, Salah, Mitrovic. Maybe sell Nketiah and Patterson.

You can get away with FTs if you plan carefully. You already have 7 players for the blank in GW28. After 3 more free transfers and a hit, you will have 11 players. You also have one Brentford players. So after 2 free transfers, you will get 3 double gameweek players in GW27. So, definitely it is possible to hold. Question is, whether there will be better opportunities to WC later in the season.

I think I will wildcard after this confusing gameweeks, run my team into the ground and end the season with good players from GW31/32...

Really up in the air wether to use FH in 28 or try to field 10/11 players instead after a hit or two. Don’t like taking hits though. That’s equivalent to a striker goal for every hit which people don’t think about imo.

Current thinking is to get as many DGW 29 players in and just avoid headache by FH in BGW28. That way I maximise 28 and 29 without hits.

      • 8 Years

I think I will use my FTs and try to field 10 players in GW28. Not that interested in GW27 other than maybe Toney.

i have 7 transfers i'd like to make before dbl gmwk 29 when i'll BB. However with 2 FT's this week i don't actually have any i want to make! anyone else with this issue. lots of players like Lewis, Tark and Andreas who are too cheap for like of like switches so leaves biting the bullet and removing Salah or Saka earlier than planned!
    a) Salah to Barnes
    b) Saka to Barnes
    c) Nketiah to Ings
