In this piece, I am sharing my thoughts on the FPL-relevant teams for a Gameweek 26 Wildcard. I am skipping Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Everton, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers as I don’t believe them to be Fantasy-pertinent at the moment.

Arsenal

FPL Double Gameweek 23 Scout Picks: ...

The league leaders have no doubles or blanks till the end of the season but do have great fixtures in the short term, against Bournemouth, Fulham and Palace. They also have Southampton at home in Blank Gameweek 32.

I think holding Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.2m) and Bukayo Saka (£8.5m) through the doubles is a viable strategy that may allow you to avoid the Free Hit in Gameweek 32. Gabriel Martinelli (£6.5m) v Martin Odegaard (£7.0m) in the short-term is a toss-up; I think Leandro Trossard (£6.6m) playing as a striker is definitely better for the Brazilian than Eddie Nketiah (£6.8m) but just in case I want to keep Odegaard and ditch Saka in 29, I prefer the Norwegian.

Aston Villa

Villa have no blanks to the end of the season and one double in Gameweek 29, which isn’t that great on paper but not that bad either. What is worth noting is that their fixture run is incredible: Palace, West Ham and Bournemouth before the double and Forest right after it. Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) is the only investible pick from there, in my opinion, with the defence conceding a huge number of big chances.

Brighton and Hove Albion

FPL review: Bueno benched, Tete terrific, "never" sub Mitoma

Brighton are going to be a big factor for the remainder of the season. They have two doubles that definitely need to be rescheduled, v Newcastle United (a) and Manchester United (H), and likely another one, v Manchester City (H), if they progress further in the FA Cup. The Newcastle game is likely to drop in outside of Gameweeks 34/37, especially if they progress in the FA Cup.

The obvious strategy would be to triple up on Brighton but with blanks in Gameweeks 28 and 32, it’s going to be difficult to hold three outfield players through that run. Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) can be considered, therefore, as he is easier to hide in those blank weeks than an outfielder.

I think Pervis Estupinan (£4.7m) needs to be in our teams, fitness pemitting. He has been playing a very attacking role of late and the upside is absolutely massive for the Ecuadorian. The midfield slots are trickier – I think Solly March (£5.1m) would be my first pick and it’s a toss-up between Kaoru Mitoma (£5.3m) and Alexis Mac Allister (£5.4m). The numbers for the Argentinian over the last two games where he has played as a no 10 are insane but he could be dropped deeper at any time by Roberto De Zerbi. I am currently leaning towards Mac Allister as it stands, as he is on penalties as well.

Brentford

Brentford will likely form the core of our Wildcard squads with two doubles over the next four Gameweeks and no blanks till the end of the season. It is worth noting though that their double in Gameweek 29 isn’t great at all, away to Brighton and away to Manchester United, especially for their defenders. Moving one defender on for the likes of Luke Shaw (£5.3m) in Gameweek 29 could be a viable option. Stats-wise, there is not much to separate Ben Mee (£5.0m) and Ethan Pinnock (£4.4m): both have had similar shots since the restart and you might as well save the £0.6m with Pinnock. Rico Henry (£4.5m) is an option but his attacking threat largely depends on Brentford playing a back five, which I think they are unlikely to do against the calibre of opposition over the short term.

Ivan Toney (£7.6m) is currently on eight yellow cards, and two more would see him pick up a two-game ban – so that’s one we need to monitor.

Chelsea

FPL review: Kepa hauls again but James misses out on clean sheet 2

Chelsea are a tricky one. The fixtures are excellent on paper, especially in Gameweeks 26 and 28 and the double in Gameweek 29 looks promising as well. They will, however, likely blank in Gameweek 32, depending on Manchester United’s progression in the FA Cup. I think Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.8m) is still a good pick – he racks up saves and bonus points – but I am less convinced on Reece James (£5.8m). He does not have the license to get forward as much as he did under Thomas Tuchel and if Chelsea do progress in the Champions League, minutes are always going to be a risk for the right-back.

Joao Felix (£7.6m) has looked promising but Chelsea do not inspire any confidence right now at all. If I see some glimpses over the next couple of weeks, I might consider Erling Haaland (£12.2m) to Felix in Gameweek 28 with a view to getting the Norwegian back in Gameweek 30. The very thought of that feels scary, though, with Haaland facing a leaky Liverpool at the Etihad in Gameweek 29.

It’s also worth mentioning that Chelsea’s double in either Gameweek 34 or 37 won’t be a great one as the Manchester United (a) fixture will be tagged on to either a trip to Arsenal or Manchester City.

Fulham

Fulham blank in Gameweek 28 and will blank in Gameweek 32 if they beat Man Utd in the FA Cup. The latter would seem unlikely at present, which would make their double in either Gameweek 34 or 37 not that great with Liverpool away. If they do progress, though, then Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) is someone we will need to buy in 33/34.

Leicester City

FPL review: Maddison's elite numbers, Spurs' injury woes 1

Leicester have a great double in Gameweek 29 but no blanks or doubles after. They have an excellent fixture run from Gameweeks 30-38, as well, with only Manchester City (a) in Gameweek 31 and Newcastle United (a) in Gameweek 37 the off-putting fixtures.

I still don’t trust Brendan Rodgers with Kelechi Iheanacho’s (£6.2m) game-time yet so I won’t be investing in the short term but he is very much a target I have in mind for Gameweek 29, given that the Foxes play Bournemouth right after. James Maddison (£8.1m) versus an Arsenal midfielder for Gameweek 26 is a consideration but I just trust Arsenal a bit more at the moment and he will likely come in for me in Gamweek 28 for a Brighton midfielder if he can prove his fitness over the next two weeks.

Liverpool

The Reds have a confirmed blank in Gameweek 28 but it is worth mentioning they have an excellent fixture in Blank Gameweek 32, at home to Forest. They are a team I likely will load up on if I do decide to Free Hit in Gameweek 32.

They will also have an attractive double later on in the season, with Fulham (H) to be added on to either Tottenham Hotspur (H) in Gameweek 34 or Villa (H) in Gameweek 37. I don’t think we are done with Liverpool yet.

Manchester City

FPL Gameweek 21 Scout Picks: ...

The reigning Champions blank in Gameweek 28 and will blank in Gameweek 32 if they beat Burnley in the FA Cup. They don’t have a double in Gameweek 29 but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Haaland outscoring all the Double Gameweekers when facing Liverpool at the Etihad.

There is a case to make a move in Gameweek 28 for someone who has three fixtures vs just one for Haaland but it’s a scary thought, as you will definitely want to buy the Norwegian back in Gameweek 30 for Southampton and you will lose one transfer and some team value as well. I still haven’t found someone that gives me that confidence yet.

Manchester United

We discussed Wildcard picks and chip strategies in detail on this week’s episode of the FPL Wire, it’s the longest and most comprehensive one we have done this season so I would highly recommend it.

It’s timestamped with the relevant sections so you can go straight to the team of your choice. Check it out here.

Thanks for reading and see you next week.

The most stupid thing I've heard all week is that so many are only wildcarding now because of content creators. It's not like others also have a brain and ability to think. Some of CC's teams were in shambles though, so you can understand why they are activating it. 😀

Nevermind, most of us were waiting for FA Cup results and were prepared to adjust the strategy at any time. For example: I didn't expect Spurs to lose and Kane to become a must have in GW28. I also didn't count on Liverpool and Fulham blank in the same gameweek, Nketiah's injury issues and Bueno's pulled hamstring. I only had Mitoma from the two teams with the most fixtures in the coming weeks.

If you can instantly improve your team with one chip and bring in some players you want, or others don't have yet, it's well worth it. I can definitely justify using it in GW26 or in GW27.

I genuinely think 'most' people are WC this week because of social media/content creators. A lot of people do not need to WC this week but are because of what they are spoon-fed. I needed to last week so did it then.

Really? I mean, of course there are some sheeps out there who are following them week in week out, but a lot of people considered and talked about this option weeks/months ago. Things changed since then and you have to adapt.

        1. WVA

Yep, really. Who talked about this option months ago? I doubt it was a lot of people, I expect it was one or two very dedicated people and the word spread from there. I can guarantee that most people in my mini leagues will WC this week, definitely all the casuals will and probably most of the others, they didn't all research the fixtures months ago and plan to WC this week. I wonder what we are talking percentage wise, probably a ridiculous amount of active players will WC this week because of what they see online.

Who thought Leicester, Spurs and Southampton would all lose months ago? Who thought DGW 27 would happen months ago? Who thought Liverpool and Chelsea would still be sh*t months ago?

My point is that you need to change and adapt. I don't really follow "content creators" (which I always thought was slang for what they do over on Only Fans...) outside of anything on this site. But nothing wrong with seeing someone else suggest something and thinking "hey I think that works for me".

Completely agree with all of this.

Absolutely nothing wrong with it but that's what pretty much everyone is doing because everyone's team is so similar because of content creators etc

Everyone's team is similar because they are targeting the best players from the same key fixtures. If City and Liverpool were options, we'd be seeing KDB vs Salah posts abound. The lack of premium options and good squad values mean we can all afford the "cream" of the mid-table crop. Few are having to choose Barnes as a cheaper route into Leicester because we can all afford Maddi.

Lazy to suggest everyone is just copying content creators.

Of course not everyone but so many are only wildcarding now because of content creators which is what this post is about, surely you don't disagree with that but fine it you do.

I disagree its everyone. Many? Don't think so. Some? Absolutely. I am sure I saw something early season where there were about a hundred teams all level on points with a popular Youtuber because they were just copying him - kinda defeats the purpose of the game imo.

Depends what you call many, i reckon 40-50% of people in my mini leagues will WC this week, spread that across all active managers and you're talking thousands - millions which i would call many. Completely defeats the game and even more annoying when they beat you haha

I think the outlook here can often skew perception of the "general" FPL base and I don't think we are representative - others have better things to do with their Friday mornings :-D. My point is that I don't believe, of those WC, a high proportion are doing it because they being influenced by content creators.

I agree with this. When the BBC and the FPL app itself is promoting what people should wildcard to in their FPL info, then WC26 has gone truly mainstream as an idea. Even before the CCreators stick their oar in.

As a chaser with a disappointing rank, it will be interesting to see if mass wildcarding in 26 helps or hinders. The negative is that the template looks incredibly strong, certainly for the short/medium term. The positive is that if everybody is doing the exact same thing, if you do something different that trumps them, then you make ground on everyone.

I don't see the WC template being any different to my current team to be honest, (WC played in week 23 which allowed me to target 23 and 25 properly in addition to 27/28/29 now). And Prince Charlie could cause a bit of late season mayhem to aid those that hold their chips until later.

Yeah its a combination of content creators and BBC, FPL etc that have kind of ruined FPL for the dedicated players.

The template always looks incredibly strong for a week or two then everything changes.

WC template no different to my WC team from last week either.

Yeah, this is just he power of media. A few thousands are definitely wildcarding because of that, but there's still a lot of others who are doing it for their own good. As I said, Liverpool blank and injuries had a huge effect on my decisions.

No. I didn't have enough issues to even consider it back then and I was flying high on green arrows. Nketiah and Bueno were fit two weeks ago and were likely to start in DGW. Ream has gotten me a lot of points lately as well and wasn't a problem. De Bruyne ➡ Salah was part of the plan anyway. I wanted to keep more or less the same players for GW24 and 25, but I intentionally saved 2FT to bring in the Reds.

Issue folks have is FOMO. Whenever I see a post "should I WC this team?", I tend to ask them why do they think they need to WC or draft a WC team and see how many changes they make.

The key “close calls” for most people must be these… anyone got a clear reason for one or more of them?

    Sanchez vs. Raya
    Zinch vs. Gabriel
    Pinnock vs. Mee vs. Henry
    Schar vs. Botman
    Ode vs. Marti
Mitoma vs. Mac Allister vs. March

Raya - More save pts and higher BPs potential
      Zinch/Gabriel - Both are okay I guess
      Henry - More attacking
      Schar - More attacking
      Odegaard - Set and forget
      Mitoma/March - Output

Raya, Brighton have hardly kept any clean sheets since GW12 I think maybe 3?
Gab more nailed but I understand going for Zinch so 50/50
      Brentford defence take your pick
Schar seems to attract more BPS
Marti seems to be bang in form at the moment but might change when Jesus comes back
March maybe, as he's on set pieces

Just my 2 pence worth 🙂

Sanchez is massively underrated, gives you an extra outfield bench slot for GW28 which means you can get an extra player out. Everyone will have a brighton defender and 2 Brentford defenders anyway so I don’t get why people are replying complaining about Brighton defence being worse than Brentford’s

Zinchenko only as it’s a short term punt and he looks fun

Pinnock and Henry for me. No point splashing the extra for Mee imo

If I had to choose now it would be schar

If Jesus looks like returning before 28 then yeah odegaard. Otherwise I’ll take a punt on marti

Mitoma and March for me. I don’t think mac keeps his place in the no.10 for long, he got moved deeper in the cup in the week already

Me following content creators (getting double Pool and Tark) destroyed my rank completely.

Now should I follow them again with this setup or do just some FT (with hits)?

    Kepa
    White - Perisic - Tark
    Rashford - Saka - Salah - Mitoma
    Haaland - Darwin - Nketiah

    Ward - Trippier - Andreas - Badiashile

    A) Nketiah -> Toney
    B) Nketiah + Badiashile -> Toney + Mee (-4)
    C) WC the whole team and go for double BRE, triple BRI, get Odegaard in for Nketiah, get Gabriel def instead of White, get Kane back.

Think the changes are too big to not do the WC honestly.

If double Pool & Tark had gone well would you instead be crediting content creators for your rank increase? Sounds like for a lot of people if something goes well they put it down to their own good decision but if it goes badly someone who advised them gets the blame...

Probably A although I do think it's genuinely a good week to wildcard.

      (not a content creator :))

          😀

I already have Mitoma and can get to Toney for free so I'm actually contemplating waiting one more week to see how Brighton/Brentford look and doing WC27 at the expense of one less FT (but a bit more info) on the way to 29.

I'm guessing this doesn't make much sense though as I don't see any content creators mentioning it!

              Kepa
              White - Trips - Akanji
              Saka - Ode - Rash - Mitoma
              Kane - Haaland - Darwin

              Ward - Gakpo - Tark - Bueno

Obviously Akanji has been a nightmare but I don't mind playing him this week and doing Darwin > Toney for a FT.
I guess realistically WC sets me up much better for 28 and 29 now Bueno is injured as well.

You'd realistically would need 5/6 transfers which could be solved with WC but your team is in better shape than mine obviously owning Kane en Odegaard. The bench is something I wouldn't like.

Yeah bench is starting to look a little rough. Quite fancy BB29 so time to get the paper and pen out for my ideal team for that and work backwards from there I think. The later doubles look fine to navigate with FTs.

I do think the gains made over 27/28/29 from WCing now make sense. I've saved it for ages before and wished I'd just used it earlier!

Roll transfer or sort out the injuries on the bench?

    Kepa

    Haaland / Kane

    Ward / Nketiah / Gomez / Bueno

Bueno? I have zero itb so any transfer would mean dropping Salah to free up funds. I don't think there's a direct transfer possible from anyone on the bench for anyone decent. Would need a hit.

The thing is Salah and Liverpool of old would bash Man Utd and he can easily score. But Bruno may be a better pick over x weeks and Salah ties up so much money.

I've changed him and afforded Kane and Bruno in the switch. Of course it could go either way in 1 week.

It is kind of bizarre that loads of people are playing wildcard now to avoid a FH28.

A WC29 or there abouts could be much more valuable.

So playing a WC now to hang on to the FH chip doesn't make sense to me.

Happy to see the trend setters going for it.

WC 29 doesn't allow you to BB. BB usually best played when the most doubles are, which is 29.

You could WC 26 or 27 or 28 to set up for BB 29, but with a decent double and blank strategy appearing, I don't see why you wouldn't. Little reason to save the WC for a rainy day

I get that but that means the WC is used to optimise BB. 2 chips for 1 dgw. Often someone will miss out unexpectedly like last week.

I think BB can be a big distraction and honestly is best played early on when you've got 4 fit players with some home fixtures.

The WC should be for the run in of 8 games or so or to get out of lots of injuries etc and a new squad.

I'm pretty confident I am playing it today to optimise for 2DGW and a BGW, to clear out some trash and set me up really nicely for the run in.

Yes, it leaves me doing 10+ weeks with only FT, but I am hoping that the odd emergency hit is less than the gains I make from the approach.

            Good luck

You could be right, the run in is always plagued by rotation and injuries and having that WC to adapt to some bad luck could be vital.

To be honest, I think both strategies are valid. I kind of object to those on here moaning about one strategy or the other. Give positive advice "no I don't think you should WC, you should do X, Y and Z" by all means, but just moaning about what people are doing isn't helping anyone. If you think your strategy works, then be pleased the rest of us are deviating from it when you're getting green arrow after green arrow

Agreed, I think WC in 29, 30 or 33 could pay off big time.
BB is a cursed chip at the best of times, and this year is especially bad. Week 29 offers a poor set of doubles for the good teams and the setup is laden with problems (blank gw in 28 for Haaland and Brighton / international break between 28 and 29). What's the point of loading up with doublers if it's the likes of Ben Mee away at Brighton and Man U or Toney sat at home playing Xbox?

Very poor take imo. Gw29 is looking to be the best gw to BB by far. If you WC in 29 you can't do that. Plus isn't it an international week? The worst possible time to actually Wildcard imo.

      1. Mr. O'Connell
        • 13 Years

Surely playing/planning a BB after an international week is a lot riskier than a WC?

Do not follow at all. How does it being the IB before week 29 make it the "worst possible time"? Surely that is a reason to Wildcard so you can actually bring in the non-injured players and target the good doublers?

Rotation risks. Also you are relying on managers being trueful about injurys too. It's hard to figure out whether they are legit or "international injurys". It's a nightmare
