We continue to assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Gameweek 26 in our Scout Notes series.

Here, we focus on Liverpool v Manchester United.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

SALAH, DARWIN + GAKPO RUN RIOT

Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) starred in Liverpool’s stunning 7-0 win over Man Utd on Sunday, as he became the Reds’ record Premier League goalscorer, moving ahead of Robbie Fowler.

In a devastating attacking display, the Egyptian looked on it right from the start and served up four attacking returns (two goals, two assists) and maximum bonus, earning his owners a whopping 21 points.

Salah’s ownership is down to 25% in the top 10k, with many FPL managers on a Wildcard choosing to sell him ahead of Gameweek 26. However, Sunday’s display was a painful reminder of his haul potential, with an appealing trip to relegation-threatened Bournemouth up next, where he also scored 21 points in the 2017/18 season.

“129 goals, that is insane. What an unbelievable number. He is a special player. We appreciate him now but in the future people will look back and be wow, we witnessed something really special.” – Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah’s record

Cody Gakpo (£7.7m) and Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) also scored two goals each, with substitute Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) adding a seventh late on. The former has now found the net four times in as many Gameweeks.

Jurgen Klopp’s side played with renewed confidence and picked apart Man Utd, with seven of their eight shots on target hitting the net.

“It was one of the best performances for a long, long time. In a way I think everybody saw how good the boys can be. I think nobody was in doubt about Darwin’s future impact when he settles because he is a real force of nature, Cody [Gakpo] plays in the most difficult area of the pitch against a man-marking side which is super tricky, but how he keeps himself on his feet there and has the overview of everybody else, Mo is Mo [Salah].

Harvey [Elliott] played a top game the other night against Wolves, had the highest counter-pressing outcome of any player in the Premier League this season so if that is not a qualification for starting again then I don’t know one to be honest, and is for us super important on the ball as well. Hendo [Henderson] didn’t start the last game, what a performance tonight, absolutely incredible, and Fab [Fabinho] is back. Last line is in a better moment as well so it’s like it has to be. How I said, we have to make these results count with the result of the next game. That’s what we try.” – Jurgen Klopp

“A few months ago everyone thought it was a good moment to play Liverpool – you can’t say it publicly but everyone thought it – because they felt we were struggling a lot but now it is less of a good moment, we look much more like ourselves.  It is important that everyone knows we are here and we are still alive.” – Jurgen Klopp

FIVE CLEAN SHEETS IN A ROW

Sunday’s win was Liverpool’s fourth in five league games. They have also kept five straight clean sheets. It’s perhaps a bit too soon to say they are ‘back’ defensively. After all, they have conceded 10 Opta-defined ‘big chances’ from Gameweek 23 onwards and were hammered at home by Real Madrid recently.

Still, they are moving in the right direction again, and it’s worth noting Man Utd had previously scored in each of their last 15 Premier League games.

Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) was particularly impressive. He provided the assist for Gakpo’s opener, created three chances and regularly got forward on the overlap.

“Good! Look, that’s a top situation. I think everybody saw how good Kostas [Tsimikas] is in the last game, he had a real impact and set up a super goal. But Robbo is Robbo and he had now 90 minutes’ break and I thought he benefitted from that today. It was a top performance, like really a flying Scotsman performance!” – Jurgen Klopp on Andrew Robertson

The result sees Liverpool move above Newcastle United into fifth place in the Premier League, albeit having played a game more than Eddie Howe’s side.

UNITED SUFFER NIGHTMARE AFTERNOON

Man Utd had come into the game on an 11-game unbeaten run, but were blown away by Liverpool in the second half.

They did have chances in the opening 45 minutes, with Bruno Fernandes (£9.8m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) – via an excellent Luke Shaw (£5.3m) pass – both missing presentable openings, but quickly fell apart after.

They have had a busy schedule of late, although Erik ten Hag refused to blame fatigue.

“No, nothing to do with that because we can bring the performance four days ago, seven days ago. It’s nothing to do with that. It’s just about the head. We know Liverpool are a good transition team. When you are 1-0 down, you can’t lose your head and bring them into the transition moments. We did not make the right decisions in the defensive actions. That is unprofessional. We have high standards and that’s not what we showed today in the second half.” – Erik ten Hag

There is no doubt United are a much, much better side under ten Hag, yet they have now conceded six and seven goals in away games against last season’s top two, as well as three at current leaders Arsenal, highlighting their defensive issues when they come up against top sides.

Next up for United is Thursday’s UEFA Europa League meeting with Real Betis, which is followed by a match against Southampton in Gameweek 27. A blank follows (they play Fulham in the FA Cup), before they ‘double’ in Gameweek 29.

“I don’t have an explanation. In the first half we were quite in control. Second half at the start we gave two goals away. There was no team anymore. We didn’t stick to the plan. There were 11 individuals. I don’t know, it’s really bad. I have given my opinion [to the players]. It was unprofessional. You always have to stick together as a team. We didn’t do that. There was no discipline. You have can setbacks but you have to stick together and do your job.

We made the wrong decisions. That for me is unprofessional. I’m really disappointed and angry. We let our fans down. As a squad, as a team, you cannot allow this. You have to stick together and support each other and fight for each other. You have to defend. We didn’t do that and for me that is really unprofessional. We have made a lot of progress but you see what happens when you don’t keep standards. What I have said in the dressing room is that this is unacceptable. But also it is only one game. We will bounce back. This team is strong enough and we will reset and bounce back.” – Erik ten Hag

Bottomed. Should I expect a red arrow with only Mitoma(C) Raya Mbuemo next week? Salah out for March to enable Toney is out of the question now.

I would keep Salah V Bournemouth.

Have you got Haaland? I'm considering him to Toney this week and bring him back in gameweek 30 after the Liverpool game

Not necessarily. I don't think the GW won't be decided solely by the difference between having 2 or 3 extra doublers, depends on who else you have too. I would try to get Estupinan though

Potentially on WC. Should I be selling Haaland?

2 (not the best fixtures) games in the next 3 GW and not great form whereas other strikers have 4 games with much better fixtures.

Will decide when I WC in GW28. Was originally thinking of only going with Kane in terms of premiums and then bringing Haaland back later. Now that Liverpool attack may be back in form, Salah may be in my WC squad ahead of Bruno F. Liverpool attack might score against anyone. A lot could change in the next week or so though.

FPL This season anyways is all about quick instinctive decisions. There are people out there who spent 30 hours + research, Wildcarded and got less than 25 points. Whereas their previous team wouldve gotten 70 points +.

Its a bit crazy to be wildcarding, getting 4-5 players from BRE BRI in anticipation of next weeks games.

POINTS ARE THERE TO BE GOTTEN THIS WEEK. NOW.

        Will soon stop ranting

The likes of Raptor, Andy , Bakar , FPL Mate are parody players at best and luckily for us who don't follow them these are the biggest accounts ( mind boggling) . Even the ones with good ranks have turned into XGI sheep and their ranks tell a sorry story of why XGI misleads.

. Yes I have never ever understood why people take Bakar seriously. Does he even watch games ? He certainly doesn't concentrate if he does

Mark has declined as an fpl player since he teamed up with Az and found XG. He never really adapted as the game changed. He's more interested in trying to go against the template from some of the stuff he says on Twitter. I dunno I don't really do black box . Not my thing

Yep, exactly that - I don't think he watches any matches so he's usually missing a lot of context by playing a pure stats game & can get into trouble quite easily that way

Ps I can assure you I don't watch any of the above but I see their crappy ranks year after year. I listen to FML and Planet sometimes because they are the only 2 that know football. The rest just copy each other and let a table of numbers dictate what they do.

I usually only look at FPL content creators output when I've got a big decision to make. A bit like tossing a coin and then realising which option you actually want. Looked at a few YouTube videos last week before deciding definitely not to WC. Whilst most content creators were on a WC, a good number gave other options or said that not everyone needed to WC.

Bit silly getting on your high horse when the game is 90% luck and 90% out of our hands. Strategy can only take you so far in FPL. If the wildcard teams had scored well this week, you wouldn't be saying all of this

That is a fair point. I mean my team was ravaged with injury and I had no choice but no one could have predicted 7 - 0. You also asses over the next 3 or 4. Glad I don't have to make the decision whether to hold pool or Wildcard this gw. Wildcard weeks are a nightmare and involve too much brain power. I'm glad it's done and dusted tbh

Despite that WC being a disaster, good to save FT and set for DGW27?

    Raya
    Estupinan/Henry/Trippier
    Saka/Martinelli/Rashford/March

    Kepa/Maddison/Zinchenko/Botman

Little knee-jerk question, but do you think Saka outscores Salah in next 4-5 GWs.

Was planning to get rid of Saka anyway in 29, but now scared to go without Salah for BOU game.

Shame that Real Madrid game is not played in midweek to if Liverpool really hit form.

I didn't WC, and had Salah and Darwin. It's funny to see all the non WC making fun of WC though. As if all of us actually knew what the scoreline at Anfield would be. To he honest, this week was one of the best for WC.

Exactly. And on the other side, I sold Salah on my wildcard and wouldn’t have done any different - just found yesterday’s game funny! Much easier to take a bad FPL day when it’s that random / unexpected.

Front 7 is as below - would you keep going with no Brighton mid or Rashford or take hits to get one?

    Salah Saka Martinelli Odegaard
    Haaland Kane Toney

Think I just need to keep going and take the pain in 27 as effectively costs (-8) to get sell an Arsenal mid for Rashford/Mitoma and reverse.

    Any thoughts?

    1. Maxroma22

You are very heavy on Arsenal attack, given the DGWs Macallister gonna have + penalties and great XG numbers in his new number 10 role - I think either Ode or Martinelli to Macallister worth it even if means 1 less player next week.

    A) Andreas to Mitoma/March/McAllister and bench Odegaard
    B) Buneo to Estupinan and bench White

Kind of sucks but B seems more sensible to me. Odegaard has double digit potential whereas White doesn't really.

Also considered A and a Brentford defender for a hit (to play over White) but I think White probably outscores Brentford defenders next week and I wouldn't want a Brentford defender in their DGW29.
