We continue to assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Gameweek 26 in our Scout Notes series.

Here, we focus on Liverpool v Manchester United.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

SALAH, DARWIN + GAKPO RUN RIOT

Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) starred in Liverpool’s stunning 7-0 win over Man Utd on Sunday, as he became the Reds’ record Premier League goalscorer, moving ahead of Robbie Fowler.

In a devastating attacking display, the Egyptian looked on it right from the start and served up four attacking returns (two goals, two assists) and maximum bonus, earning his owners a whopping 21 points.

Salah’s ownership is down to 25% in the top 10k, with many FPL managers on a Wildcard choosing to sell him ahead of Gameweek 26. However, Sunday’s display was a painful reminder of his haul potential, with an appealing trip to relegation-threatened Bournemouth up next, where he also scored 21 points in the 2017/18 season.

“129 goals, that is insane. What an unbelievable number. He is a special player. We appreciate him now but in the future people will look back and be wow, we witnessed something really special.” – Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah’s record

Cody Gakpo (£7.7m) and Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) also scored two goals each, with substitute Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) adding a seventh late on. The former has now found the net four times in as many Gameweeks.

Jurgen Klopp’s side played with renewed confidence and picked apart Man Utd, with seven of their eight shots on target hitting the net.

“It was one of the best performances for a long, long time. In a way I think everybody saw how good the boys can be. I think nobody was in doubt about Darwin’s future impact when he settles because he is a real force of nature, Cody [Gakpo] plays in the most difficult area of the pitch against a man-marking side which is super tricky, but how he keeps himself on his feet there and has the overview of everybody else, Mo is Mo [Salah].

Harvey [Elliott] played a top game the other night against Wolves, had the highest counter-pressing outcome of any player in the Premier League this season so if that is not a qualification for starting again then I don’t know one to be honest, and is for us super important on the ball as well. Hendo [Henderson] didn’t start the last game, what a performance tonight, absolutely incredible, and Fab [Fabinho] is back. Last line is in a better moment as well so it’s like it has to be. How I said, we have to make these results count with the result of the next game. That’s what we try.” – Jurgen Klopp

“A few months ago everyone thought it was a good moment to play Liverpool – you can’t say it publicly but everyone thought it – because they felt we were struggling a lot but now it is less of a good moment, we look much more like ourselves.  It is important that everyone knows we are here and we are still alive.” – Jurgen Klopp

FIVE CLEAN SHEETS IN A ROW

Sunday’s win was Liverpool’s fourth in five league games. They have also kept five straight clean sheets. It’s perhaps a bit too soon to say they are ‘back’ defensively. After all, they have conceded 10 Opta-defined ‘big chances’ from Gameweek 23 onwards and were hammered at home by Real Madrid recently.

Still, they are moving in the right direction again, and it’s worth noting Man Utd had previously scored in each of their last 15 Premier League games.

Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) was particularly impressive. He provided the assist for Gakpo’s opener, created three chances and regularly got forward on the overlap.

“Good! Look, that’s a top situation. I think everybody saw how good Kostas [Tsimikas] is in the last game, he had a real impact and set up a super goal. But Robbo is Robbo and he had now 90 minutes’ break and I thought he benefitted from that today. It was a top performance, like really a flying Scotsman performance!” – Jurgen Klopp on Andrew Robertson

The result sees Liverpool move above Newcastle United into fifth place in the Premier League, albeit having played a game more than Eddie Howe’s side.

UNITED SUFFER NIGHTMARE AFTERNOON

Man Utd had come into the game on an 11-game unbeaten run, but were blown away by Liverpool in the second half.

They did have chances in the opening 45 minutes, with Bruno Fernandes (£9.8m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) – via an excellent Luke Shaw (£5.3m) pass – both missing presentable openings, but quickly fell apart after.

They have had a busy schedule of late, although Erik ten Hag refused to blame fatigue.

“No, nothing to do with that because we can bring the performance four days ago, seven days ago. It’s nothing to do with that. It’s just about the head. We know Liverpool are a good transition team. When you are 1-0 down, you can’t lose your head and bring them into the transition moments. We did not make the right decisions in the defensive actions. That is unprofessional. We have high standards and that’s not what we showed today in the second half.” – Erik ten Hag

There is no doubt United are a much, much better side under ten Hag, yet they have now conceded six and seven goals in away games against last season’s top two, as well as three at current leaders Arsenal, highlighting their defensive issues when they come up against top sides.

Next up for United is Thursday’s UEFA Europa League meeting with Real Betis, which is followed by a match against Southampton in Gameweek 27. A blank follows (they play Fulham in the FA Cup), before they ‘double’ in Gameweek 29.

“I don’t have an explanation. In the first half we were quite in control. Second half at the start we gave two goals away. There was no team anymore. We didn’t stick to the plan. There were 11 individuals. I don’t know, it’s really bad. I have given my opinion [to the players]. It was unprofessional. You always have to stick together as a team. We didn’t do that. There was no discipline. You have can setbacks but you have to stick together and do your job.

We made the wrong decisions. That for me is unprofessional. I’m really disappointed and angry. We let our fans down. As a squad, as a team, you cannot allow this. You have to stick together and support each other and fight for each other. You have to defend. We didn’t do that and for me that is really unprofessional. We have made a lot of progress but you see what happens when you don’t keep standards. What I have said in the dressing room is that this is unacceptable. But also it is only one game. We will bounce back. This team is strong enough and we will reset and bounce back.” – Erik ten Hag

Green arrow for 14k, my best OR in this season so far 🙂
My strategy for next GW is play with 9 or 10 (-4) in BGW28 and use BB in 29
    My current team, 2ft 0,0 $ itb
    Kepa
    Estupinan,Trippier,Robertson
    Saka,Odegaard,Salah,Mitoma,Bowen
    Haaland,Felix
    Bench : Navas, Gabriel, Gnonto
Which transfers would you do to get Toney ?
Thoughts about Haaland, Gnonto --> Toney, Mbeumo (then play both and bench Felix) I'm know Haaland to Mbeumo is not the best idea, but Mbeumo has 5 matches and Haaland 2 in next 3 GW

I’ll likely be doing Haaland to Mbeumo this week for the 5 vs 2 fixtures.

I am going to bench Haaland in 28 so it's 4 v 2 games for me, assuming Mbeumo isn't bench in one of the doubles or gets injured with all the minutes
... then we get to points per game of 7.9 to 3.6
... then Mbeumo playing against our Brighton defenders in 29
... then you have to work out how to get Haaland back

These decisions are never straight forward 🙂

Keep Salah as player to bench in GW28, though might be tough if bringing in Brighton players? Depends on what you want for GW29 and if using BB then.

Morning. I'm not as on the ball with chip strategies as you lot probably are.

I still have WC, FH and BB. Would FH in GW28 and WC in GW 29 suit this squad?

    Kepa / Ward

    Trippier Tark White Estup Bueno

    Rashford Salah Mitoma Odegard Saka

    Haaland Kane Gnonto

      If I still had all chips, I'd WC28, BB29, FH32.

Your strategy looks sound and I would be tempted to FH in 28.
But I would also look at the possibility of then using no chip in 29, dead-ending into 32, wc in 33 for a BB in 34...

BB might even be an option next GW? I've got seven genuine captain options, and have no idea which to choose:

        1. Salah
        2. Haaland
        3. Kane
        4. Rashford
        5. Toney x 2
        6. Mitoma x 2
        7. Raya x 2

    3. Hairy Potter

Many have benching issues this coming GW so BB27 could be an option. BB29 looks good, but hard to predict how players might be after international break.

FH could be good for GW32 as Man City, Man Utd, Brighton and Chelsea blank if I remember correctly.

      1. Hairy Potter
        • 10 Years

Might sound silly, but BB depends on your bench players. Sometimes we get seduced by the big DGWs, but sometimes it's about the SGW players you keep and good fixtures. Though I usually want my keepers to both have DGW.

    Thoughts on Ward to Steele?

Pros - much better defence, short term lure of an additional fixture and means I’m rid of Ward.

Cons - will likely mean a -4 further down the road in 29 and my FT in 32 as Kepa and Steele will both likely blank. Ward also actually has decent fixtures in 29 and 32 where id need him.

Øde. Fulham have conceded 5 goals since the WC (fewest in the league) & it hasn't exactly been a straightforward run of fixtures. I think it'll be tight. Forest - at home, specifically - is the game that worries me most as a non-owner of Kane

This is a very painful week.

Benched Mitoma and Mings for Gabriel and Maddison (losing 19 points).

And then after the Liverpool game, I looked back at my team last week in which I owned Trent, Salah and Nunez. I then wildcarded this week. And have no liverpool players. Its a tough one to take tbh

    Any help please

    Leno
    Trippier-White-Van Dijk
    Salah-Odegaard-Martinelli-Rashford
    Kane-Haaland-Toney

Any thoughts on this WC second draft:

    Kepa, Raya
    Trip, White, Mee, Botman/Burn, Estu
    Saka, Salah, Rash, Macallister, Mitoma
    Mbeumo, Haaland, Kane

I could get Toney in for Mbeumo and keep Salah, but it would mean a much weaker defence with Lewis or Neco in for Mee and Henry for Bot/Burn

I also realise this is a massive benching headache, but I'm happy to deal with that after the double

Don't do that to your defence. Isn't Aurier back now? And if you want to BB29, don't count on Lewis starting v LIV. Better as it is now

    Prediction for Brentford Fulham.

    I'm gonna go

2-1 Brentford, Toney Return and Raya save points hopefully.

Having said that, I did expect a 3-2 win for United. So let's hope Brentford don't sink 7.

Might be wishful thinking as I have no Brentford yet. Will be behind the sofa. Given my bench so far this GW, Andreas will probably haul.

Aye, I'd take a Brentford win and clean sheet like.

Would also happily take a Toney illness, would have Gakpo coming in.

So I have all my chips left to use and really stuck on how best to use them. I'm not entirely convinced WC is necessarily the best option this week, as I don't want to lose Haaland, Kane, Salah et al after GW29. I reckon I can get by with 2 x Brentford & 2 x Brighton this week, scrape through GW28 with 9-10 players, then use the following strategy:

    FH: 29
    WC: 33
    BB: 34
    TC: 37

Seem like sound enough logic? or will this all end in tears...

    Any thoughts appreciated!

    Cheers

What would your GW29 team look like if you don't FH?

Would you want to BB34 if the additional fixtures were:
      Brighton v Man Utd
      Liverpool v Fulham
      Man City v West Ham
(I.e. not exactly ideal for cheap triple ups)

Can you not BB in 29 and save FH for another double? You might be well set up for BB in 29 if you don't FH.

WC being a disaster but stick to the plan, save FT and set for DGW27?

    Raya
    Estupinan/Henry/Trippier
    Saka/Martinelli/Rashford/March
    Haaland/Kane/Toney(c)

    Kepa/Maddison/Zinchenko/Botman

    Estupinan-Mee-TAA-Trippier-Ake
    Rashford-Ødegaard-Saka-Gakpo-Mitoma

Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Ake & Gnonto are the priorities to replace before 29? Might be that neither move improves your team this week though (the other 4 defenders are all very playable, for example). So maybe just roll? I like the GW27 doublers you have in place right now. Suppose there are some options like Ramsdale - Raya, Haaland - Toney, Gakpo - Mac but I'm not too sure about these if they lead to hits later
