In the early days of this March international break, we’re already seeing injury flags appear all over Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

From early squad withdrawals to in-game fitness concerns, we round up the latest FPL team news from around the globe.

Here is what we know so far.

ERLING HAALAND

FPL review: Haaland's hat-trick, Foden update, Rashford's run

Having been by far the most-owned FPL player, selected in over 9.5 million squads over recent times, the 1.3 million managers that sold Erling Haaland (£12.0m) ahead of Blank Gameweek 28 will be relieved to see that he’s pulled out of Norway’s Euro 2024 qualifiers due to a groin injury.

“After doing tests and examinations yesterday it became clear that he will not make it for the games against Spain and Georgia. It is better that he receives medical follow-up at his club.” – statement from Norway national team doctor Ola Sand

On Friday, Haaland’s father reported that the striker had been facing specialist treatment in Barcelona and was “touch and go” for the Liverpool game in Gameweek 29.

“Firstly, I’m not a doctor and secondly, I think it’s ‘touch and go’, yes. You can’t just go two weeks without training and then jump right into a fight.”

“There must be a progression there. They can gamble on it, but if he doesn’t get proper training with the team, then he won’t play. It is about how he responds to treatment in the next few days.

“He needs a lot of care and ‘knuckling’. There are many sprints and there is a lot to move.” – Alf Inge Haaland on his son’s injury

If he’s ruled out, this injury will open the door for managers to keep buying names like Ollie Watkins (£7.5m), Kai Havertz (£7.6m) and Alexander Isak (£6.7m), or even punt on Julian Alvarez (£6.0m) or Danny Ings (£6.4m).

MARCUS RASHFORD

Several names have already pulled out of the England squad to face Italy and Ukraine but the biggest in terms of FPL is Marcus Rashford (£7.3m), who many planned to captain for Manchester United’s Double Gameweek 29.

Like Haaland, the 25-year-old was hurt in FA Cup action and was taken off during the second half.

“Marcus Rashford will also miss out on the forthcoming UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers having picked up a knock during Manchester United’s Emirates FA Cup quarter-final win over Fulham on Sunday.” – statement from The FA

Having just blanked in Gameweek 28, Rashford and Man Utd are about to have a good fixture run that follows the double with Everton (h), Nottingham Forest (a) and two yet-to-be-scheduled games in hand.

NICK POPE

Also out is Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope (£5.4m), owned by 21.2% of FPL managers. He played all 90 minutes against Nottingham Forest on Friday despite barely training all week.

Pope will remain at Newcastle to get treatment for this minor problem and there is hope that he’ll be fine to begin Double Gameweek 29 versus Man Utd.

Replaced by Fraser Forster (£3.9m) in Gareth Southgate’s squad, FPL managers probably needn’t worry about this precautionary withdrawal.

DARWIN NUNEZ

Uruguayan newspapers have attributed Darwin Nunez‘s (£8.8m) absence to an ankle problem. Instead of facing Japan and South Korea in friendlies, the Liverpool forward will instead receive treatment at their training centre.

Although the Reds are another team with two Gameweek 29 outings, their tricky trips to Man City and Chelsea don’t hold much appeal, before they host league leaders Arsenal in Gameweek 30.

MASON MOUNT

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount (£7.2m) hasn’t appeared in their last four matches, so Graham Potter was surprised at the initial call-up.

“He’s never been available as far as I am aware. He needed a bit of time for his injury to settle down, which has pretty much ruled him out of England. Whether that meant they needed a bit of time to double-check that, I don’t know. I don’t think there is anything untoward at all. But from my selection perspective, he wasn’t available for the weekend.” – Graham Potter

A run of blank returns preceded Mount’s lower abdomen injury – scoring and assisting just once since Gameweek 11 – so he’d have been a maverick FPL pick for Double Gameweek 29. This continued injury likely rules him out as an option.

OTHERS

Mount’s club team-mate Wesley Fofana (£4.3m) was called up to France’s senior squad for the first time but has had to pull out because of a hamstring injury suffered during the 2-2 draw with Everton. For those without Chelsea defensive coverage, cheap centre-back Fofana would’ve been an interesting way in, having started all matches since Potter switched to a wing-back system.

Spurs duo Ben Davies (£4.8m) and Richarlison (£8.4m) were both hurt early in the dramatic 3-3 draw at Southampton and quickly taken off. Neither will be involved with their national sides.

Across north London, Mikel Arteta gave updates on defensive pair Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.2m) and William Saliba (£5.2m). He admits “it’s not looking good” for the former but is more optimistic about the latter.

Sven Botman (£4.5m) and Cody Gakpo (£7.7m) had to leave the Netherlands training camp on Thursday but Newcastle United reporter Chris Waugh suggests the pair could still return for the second of the Oranje’s international fixtures.

Best way to ascertain an injury to the groinula region is a good old fashioned squirrel grip!

Could be a few weeks out for Haaland if a genuine groin injury, rather than an IB 'injury'

Just thinking the same. I was contemplating bringing him back this week (after the Internationals) for Kane but will definitely hold fire and await further news.

It's probably not. The norwegian camp wouldn't send him to England again, without it being an injury.
How serious it is we'll have to wait and see.

I do not think that is an IB injury. They usually appear during an IB when UEFA Nations League matches are played or friendlies

    I'm planning a minus 4 for 3 transfers:
    Sanchez to Steele
    Zinchenko to Shaw/Chilwell
    Martinelli to Bruno

Then in GW30 Toney to Haaland, if fit.

Marti to Bruno is a poor move imo

Not sure I agree with that. We all know how good Arsenal are at the moment, but but they have a very poor run of fixtures coming up, and Man united double in 29 and have a good run.

Obviously, you want him back at some point, but the logic for the move is solid IMHO.

I think it's an okay move if for free, but doing it for a hit seems a bit worse.

Especially since with their 29 fixtures and Casemiro being out, I don't think getting him in ASAP is so necessary.

It’s not really a poor run if fixtures if you’re currently the best performing team in the league. Marti is one of the best performers out if that team and now he’s playing alongside Trossard! To risk that trade for a lower performer in a team that’s struggling a little more does not make sense I’m afraid.

Are you a lot more confident on Steele over Sanchez? I'm getting off Brighton GK completely. DDG and Dunk instead maybe?

These International break injury facade is becoming quite laughable at this point ... I am quite sure there is plenty of money/authority involved to cover/foolproof your tracks..why only the rich clubs have key players getting injured before the IB, City/United/Newcastle etc.

    Kane /Toney / Watkins

What do you think of my Team?

Transferred in Salah, maybe a mistake with the games coming up for Liverpool

I don't believe any of these 'injuries' basically just a nice excuse to give the likes of Haaland and Rashford a much needed rest.

They are injuries no doubt but a chance for the clubs to err on the side of caution. City have a massive game after the international break. Plus Man United have that double. I very very skeptical.

“ Whether this is a real issue or one of those ‘classic’ international break withdrawals remains to be seen”

Come on FFS - this is really badly worded sentence, you have already answered this question yourself in your own article.

After doing tests and examinations yesterday it became clear that he will not make it for the games against Spain and Georgia. It is better that he receives medical follow-up at his club.” – statement from Norway national team doctor Ola Sand

All players report for International duty and it is then up to the National Teams doctors not the Club doctors as to whether they are fit to play.

Haaland, Rashford, Mount and Pope are all absolutely committed to their countries cause and I am sure they would all play if they were able too, these are clearly genuine injuries that will keep them out for at least the length of the International break.

Agree and Haaland had a nice mid-season break when the WC was on as Norway weren't involved.

My guess is that the injuries often appear suspicious because, it turns out, two weeks off gives the players some much needed rest without the shadow of being risked back early and hence not always surprising that the injuries are ok by the time the next FPL week rolls around.

Yep absolutely, usually a couple of weeks off with rest completely aids the players recovery.

It’s perfectly conceivable that all these players will be ready to play by the time the next round of PL games comes round.

    3. Piggs Boson

Players are sometimes asked not to go and represent their countries. Phantom international "injuries" do exist.

Roy Keane: "I was under constant pressure when I was going away with Ireland from the Manchester United manager. Constantly told, 'You shouldn’t be going over'. Even if you weren’t injured and you had a little knock, they wouldn’t want you going, it was constant pressure."

      1. Maddamotha
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 17 days ago

Sure. But this is before they leave their club to go to their countries.
Once Haaland came to Norway and the doc looked at him, he obviously made a professional assessment that he was not able to play.

I thin in the case of Haaland or Rashford then nobody could ever deny to their absolute commitment to their countries cause.

I am sure Arteta would love to have kept Saka away from International duty after their congested fixture list. I’m sure Rogers would be delighted if Madisson missed out. But they are both in the squad. I don’t think it is as easy for players to self withdraw these days as it was in the past

I brought in Odegaard for MacAllister last gw (last minute transfer, was afraid Zinchenko and/or Schar would not play) for a hit, but would you sell him immediately now for a hit as well as I have Saka?

BBing and this is the team:

    Kepa Steele

    Saka Odegaard Rashfor Maddison Mitoma
    Kane Toney Watkins

it depends where he's putting his focus.

are Norway expected to qualify out of their group?

perhaps he's prioritising the Champions League and club football like most do.

Norway has a fair chance of qualifying, and I have no doubt that Haaland really wants to play for the national team in the Euro 2024. The injury is quite a blow for the team.

Håland himself insisted on playing, it was the national team doctor who told him that he could not. Man City was as far as I know not involved in the decision.

Of course it is serious. He wouldn't even travel to Norway if he wanted to fake it. Here is hope that there is a minimal damage that he can heal in 10 days.

It is also worth noting that the national team doctor considered it pointless to wait and see how things developed up to matchday on saturday which Haaland and the national team coach wanted to do.

    Chilwell*, Trippier*, Botman*, Henry*
    Rashford*, Mitoma*, March*
    Toney*, Watkins*, Kane

    (Raya*, Saka, Martinelli, Gabriel)

    A) Henry* -> Shaw*
    B) Henry* & Martinelli -> Shaw* & Fernandes*
    C) Henry* & Kane -> Shaw* & Havertz/Felix/Isak*

(could also lose Gabriel instead of Henry).

    Cheers

      C. (I am doing Isak if DGW31 is on). Also have White but Arsenal have only kept 3 clean sheets at home, so i will keep Henry i think and hope for the best or an assist

I'm sure the Haaland injury is a device with the Premier League and Champions League run in.

Unless he did it in the Burnley game, he wouldn't have been risked in that match with a known issue.

Didn't he score 3 and get subbed as normal?

Well, he got subbed off. Was it normal? We don't know.

Yep, feel your pain. Weeks of careful planning down the swanny. Haaland and Rashford I could deal with but Ward is my biggest problem. Leaves me looking at a -8 to make it work which is too much for a BB. Games still 10 days away, hopefully Rashford will be OK at least.

I rolled FT last week because of this possibility. Luck of course plays a part, I just happened to already be considering moving out Ward for a hit to a better DGW keeper so moving him on doesn't feel like a big problem for me. There will inevitably be further things to think about in the next 10 days but just wait and see

what would your hit be in 30?

Pencilling in 8 points of hits seems bad to me.

Similar teams. I have done B on WC, and I am doing white to Estu/Dunk.

I may do Kane to Isak if DGW31 is announced for a hit

    My current bench:
    Ward | Odegaard | Tarkowski | Bueno

    A) Ward and Bueno -> Steele and Shaw -4 (bench boost)

    B) Just Bueno -> Shaw and bench boost after my wildcard

Think I'd do A. That's a pretty strong bench all things considered.
