Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead returns for the 2022/23 season with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this season are the BlackBox pair of Mark Sutherns and Az, Scouts Joe LepperTom FreemanNeale Rigg, Geoff Dance, Pro Pundits PrasZophar and FPL Harry,  FPL “celebrities” Magnus CarlsenFPL GeneralLTFPL AndyBen Crellin, from the Hall of Fame, Fabio BorgesFPL MatthewFinn Sollie and Tom Stephenson and of course last year’s mini league winner and overall no.2 Suvansh.

“Big time, I’m on my way. I’m making it”

Some huge scores this week amongst The Great and The Good, as Double Gameweek 29 lived up to its big-time billing with wall-to-wall Bench Boosts and plenty of triple digits, plus plenty of arguments about what constitutes a valid bench score.

The lure of doubles saw us all eager to move on our Arsenal players and this lurched into fever pitch with five minutes to go, as Let’s Talk FPL Andy broke the FPL internet by leaking news of Bukayo Saka‘s (£8.6m) benching.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Ali v Frazier, Nicklaus v Palmer and Federer v Nadal are all legendary sporting rivalries but we now have to add FPL Harry v Ben Crellin, as this duo continue to duke it out at the top of The Great and The Good’s league table.

It was Harry’s turn to make gains this week, as he played his Bench Boost whilst Ben could only watch on, having played his a couple of weeks ago. In the end, Harry only racked up a nine-point advantage thanks to a triple hit but this is a match-up that will go to the wire, as only four points now separate them. Both are inside the top 1k overall.

This week’s king of the FPL ring was Neale Rigg with 146, putting Ollie Watkins (£7.5m), Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) alongside differential Brentford goal scorer Ethan Pinnock (£4.4m). The Scout Editor’s sixth successive green arrow places him in the top 100k.

Also on a good run is the aforementioned LTFPL Andy, who took time away from stressing out Fantasy managers to score 143 and move onto a five-digit rank for the first time this season. In fact, 11 of The Great and The Good now sit within the best 100,000.

Elsewhere, the captaincy was up for debate this week. The sensible pick for those who tuck their shirts into their underwear was Rashford, for those braver with their briefs it was a Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder whilst Fabio Borges had his patriotic pants pulled down with his choice of Bruno Fernandes (£9.6m).

TRANSFERS

The excitement of the double gave many an excuse to take a hit or two, with the usual diatribe that a minus four is a minus two on such occasions.

A dozen of The Great and The Good took a hit; Finn spent eight points to reach Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) and Pras joined by hopping aboard the Harvey Barnes (£6.7m) train. Choo choo!

FPL Harry lost his cool completely when hearing that Saka would be sat down to start the match against Leeds United, going wild with a -12 hit. Whilst Dominic Solanke (£5.5m) scored, he will probably still be mad at James Maddison (£8.3m) for disappointing once again.

Elsewhere, it was a rinse and repeat of Fernandes and Luke Shaw (£5.2m) for the majority.

The full list of transfers is below:

  • Az – Maddison, Steele (Saka, Ward)
  • LTFPL Andy – Shaw, Fernandes (Saka, Gabriel)
  • Ben Crellin – Salah (Ward-Prowse)
  • Fabio Borges – Shaw, Fernandes (Gabriel, Odegaard)
  • Finn Sollie – Salah, Shaw, Fernandes (Saka, Odegaard, Zinchenko)
  • FPL Harry – Solanke, Maddison, Shaw, Fernandes (Kane, Saka, Martinelli, Zinchenko)
  • Joe Lepper – Shaw, Fernandes (Pinnock, Saka)
  • Geoff Dance – Steele, Fernandes (Odegaard, Ward)
  • FPL General – Shaw, Fernandes (Gabriel, Odegaard)
  • Magnus Carlsen – Rashford (Andreas)
  • Mark Sutherns – Shaw, Fernandes (Odegaard, Gabriel)
  • FPL Matthew – Shaw, Fernandes (Saka, Pinnock)
  • Neale Rigg – Shaw, Fernandes (Gabriel, Saka)
  • Pras – Barnes, Shaw, Fernandes (Saka, Zinchenko, Odegaard)
  • Suvansh – Shaw, Fernandes (Saka, Zinchenko)
  • Tom Freeman – Fernandes (Odegaard)
  • Tom Stephenson – Shaw, Fernandes (Zinchenko, Odegaard)
  • Zophar – Fernandes (Odegaard)

TEMPLATE

The full details for The Great and The Good are as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

Kepa (14), Raya (13)

Trippier (17), Chilwell (15), Botman (14), Shaw (13), Henry (10)

Rashford (18), Fernandes (15), Mitoma (14), March (13), Saka (8)

Toney (17), Watkins (17), Kane (16)

The Arsenal fell out of the bottom of the template, as Martin Odegaard (£6.8m) and Gabriel (£5.2m) made way. Fernandes and Shaw were the eager new starters.

BENCH BOOST

All featured managers have now played the Bench Boost chip, with Fabio and Ben having deployed it in Gameweek 27. So, who wowed with their woodwork scores?

Neale and Fabio hit the heady height of 33 points so will be pleased with their plank. Unfortunately, Suvansh, Zophar and FPL General will be less satisfied with their substitute scores that failed to total 20.

Of course, the final result will be up for debate as I am sure there will be claims of bench wizardry but I’ll leave others to have that fight.

CONCLUSION

We’re back to normality this week, with just a normal ten fixtures to contend with. However, I suspect most of our time will be spent trying to work out how to fit Erling Haaland (£12.0m) and Salah into our squads over the next few weeks.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now, but remember – don’t have FPL nightmares.

For those affected by any of the topics raised in the above article then you can find me here on Twitter.

    Afternoon all,

Toney > Haaland if declared fit is the obvious move right?

    Mitoma Maddison Rashford Saka
    Toney Watkins Kane

    Martinelli Estupinan Henry

    1 FT and 5.7 ITB.

Yes, doing the same have money without hits for (Toney>Haaland) just not sure "when" if expecting price rises etc

Probably my move too. Your midfield is identical to mine but at the moment I have Martinelli playing instead of Maddison.

Which do you think is the best pick? I also have Saka btw.

    Current defense:

    Trippier, Chilwell, Gabriel, Mings, Shaw

Having played BB this GW, I am best to now shift Shaw to Neco/any 3.8m to plonk on my bench for the remainder?!

I can then put as much money as poss into my playing team...

        Rashford, March, Mitoma, Madds
        Kane, Havertz, Watkins

        Steele, Saka, Gabriel, Shaw

Other move for -4 was going to be Havertz/Kane to Haaland, if fit.

Interim coach whilst deciding to the end of season a good choice.

Knows the club/youth teams players like Mount who have played poor under porter
& others will give confidence. A legend with less resources last time got Chelsea
into the top four, took to FA cup final & unlucky to lose who knows if he won & Arteta not won
      - margins of success are very fine. His always promoted youth players & during his time the talents have emerged from the youth setup - Chelsea in the 60s had great youth set-up which they have kept today but external sources only looking at the imported/transfer players. His background team will assist & the Chelsea setup from top to bottom with ex players as coach is only matches by a handful of teams/clubs.

The old comment never go back but Jose Mourinho shown winning the Premier League back on season in
2204-5, 2005-06 then going back in 2014-15 you can get success. Chelsea for last 20 years have adopted
the European model with keeping managers for short-term but been very successful.

Apologies - going back to my answer - yes until a decision has been made nothing to lose - they say Chelsea are having a poor season by their standards - Champions League Quarter Finals against Real Madrid - not all bad, a team only second in Spain whom Barcelona top lost to United in the Europa league the other week!

Been lurking around 2m all season. Neither fall drastically, nor climb similarly. Having never finished outside 500k in my 9 seasons of FPL, there's a decent chance unwanted records will be set this season.

I get that I guess, but he’s a very uninspired pick now in my opinion, hardly ever hauls, and for that price jsit not worth it any longer imo. I may have him on my FH in 32 of course, but other than that, not interested any more, no wonder my rivals are ahead of me, it’s because they don’t have him lol

Oh you've really thrown a spanner into the works! I'll wait on Haaland news tomorrow obviously, but I suppose going off overall points this season then Salah is a fair way behind Kane, sometimes it's misleading getting drawn in by the fixtures

Salah since Jan 2022 is the not the same Salah pre African Nations however where this season is a total one off with mid-season World Cup in a poor Liverpool team some due to form some due to injury his still be scoring & todate 7th best over all on 161 points at the moment with 12 goals/8 assists not bad for most but we judge him on Salah previous seasons - my options I'm keeping open at the moment

Totally get thoughts on Salah - He annoyed me the other week against Bournemouth away missed a pen & scored zero points instead of expected at least 7 as going up to take the pen & I dropped him the following week but will look at Liverpool possible Salah again the coming weeks with these fixtures - Gomaz back in defence/clean sheet against Chelsea away - I wonder if the old Liverpool of previous season up for Arsenal as they rested lots mid-week - could get a result but certainly GW31 to end of season & plays in GW32 BGW

              GW30 Arsenal H
              GW31 Leeds A
              GW32 Nottingham Forest A
              GW33 West Ham A
              GW34 Tottenham H / Fulham H
              GW35 Brentford H
              GW36 Leicester City A
              GW37 Aston Villa H
              GW38 Southampton A

Yeah, just seeing a lot of Toney for Haaland this week. Wish I had that ITB. So one premium must be sacrificed. It could come down to who scores more out of who I'll replace them with. I'd likely replace Salah with Grealish, and Kane with Haaland but bring in Jesus for Toney next week. So if I go the losing Kane route, I would be hoping Haaland and Jesus score more than Kane until end of the season. Whereas I predict Salah will outscore Grealish...

I shipped Kane and Mahrez in GW25 to Watkins and Salah. Salah has just about outscored Kane in that period. I like Salah's fixtures after Arsenal, especially GW32 and GW34.

Anyone got any opinions on Jack Harrision as a cheapish midfield differential? Was considering swapping Bruno for him to get funds for Toney to Haaland.

Looks like he has 3 goals & 2 assists in last 6

            Not really, I feel faint.

But it is flagged Haaland -4 vs Havertz.

What to do here? 1FT and £1m ITB.

    Pope
    Shaw, White, Akanji
    Salah, Saka, Madison, Rashford
    Toney, Kane, Watkins

    Ward, Mitoma, Estupian, Tarkowski

Depends if you want Haaland, could sell Kane or take a hit. Would play Mitoma

I was planning on getting Haaland back but am quite pleased with the front 3! Kane just always seems to score and the other 2 on quite good form.

      Play Mitoma over Madison

If happy at the moment with front three maybe wait then until Toney YC or GW33 to get Haaland back

      Maybe Shaw to Mings

Which one of Saka and Martinelli out for Grealish?

    Rest of team
    Kepa Raya
    Trippier Shaw Zinchenko Mee Castagne
    Rashford Saka Martinelli Mitoma Maddison
    Kane Toney Isak

Thinking of going without Haaland until GW33.

Neither. I'd prefer to lose Maddison from your midfield.

Any opinions / predictions on KDB's gametime around UCL? Getting tempted to bring him in for Maddison, maybe even this week, but the recent record isn't too promising:

    11/03 Palace 11 mins
    14/03 Leipzig 90mins
    18/03 Burnley 89mins

    18/02 Forest 88mins
    22/02 Leipzig 0mins
    25/02 Bournemouth 0mins

    29/10 Leicester 90mins
    02/11 Sevilla 20mins
    05/11 Fulham 90mins

    08/10 Southampton 70mins
    11/10 Copenhagen 77mins
    16/10 Liverpool 90mins

Would you do Toney or Havertz to Haaland? Hate Havertz but Toney is on yellow alert...

Toney is a transfer waiting to happen, but rate him more than Havertz to get FPL points. Depends if you have FH or any planned FTs in the coming weeks. Could you do Havertz to Haaland and maybe have Toney as a placeholder for someone like Jesus?

What would you do from the following options to free up cash for Toney to Haaland? (Missing 0.5m)
    A) Bruno to Grealish
    B) Bruno to Martinelli
    C) Henry to Emerson

    1. Hairy Potter

They might be a bit more attacking. Doesn't he prefer 4-3-3? Not sure that gets the best out of the defenders, especially Chilwell and James who seem better suited to 3 centre backs.

Lampard is back but more importantly for Chelsea Kante back could help with clean sheets from his performances in midfield

    CONCLUSION
We’re back to normality this week, with just a normal ten fixtures to contend with. However, I suspect most of our time will be spent trying to work out how to fit Erling Haaland (£12.0m) and Salah into our squads over the next few weeks.

    Its really not that hard....

    Kepa
    Trippier Gabriel Shaw
    Salah Saka Rashford Mitoma
    Haaland Kane Watkins
    Steele Andreas Estupian Mings

Unlucky. So I guess the 3 spots I'd be looking to improve then would be Gabriel (fixtures), Toney (ban) & Maddison (Leicester...). Maybe Gabriel looks like the lowest scorer this week, but with Shaw injured I guess City CBs would be the natural replacements - not sure how you feel about them? Could be better to hold off til 34?

I agree with the spots you identify!

I don't like seeing Maddison there, but don't think I'll sell him ahead of Bournemouth at home. I thought of Toney to Watkins, but seems like a possible sideaways move. Your point about Gabriel's fixtures is interesting, hadn't thought of that!
