Q: Your thoughts on hedging your bets v ‘all eggs in one basket’ when on a Free Hit?

Where have Newcastle's clean sheets gone? 5

(via @FPL_BlackWolf)

A: I’m going to use this question to talk about Free Hit strategy in general. It is tempting to go fully against the grain on a Free Hit because as the name of the chip implies, it’s all for one week only, so you can have fun with it. After all, what’s the point in picking the same players that will make up almost every Free Hit team anyway?

First off, it is worth noting that 45% of the overall game and about 25% of the top 10k have already used the Free Hit. So using the chip itself should lead to a gain in points and there is no need to go fully against the picks that have served us well, especially if they have favourable match-ups. My mantra in FPL is ‘never go different simply for the sake of being different’. Pick good players from good teams who have good match-ups.

This is the case with Ollie Watkins (£7.7m), who faces a Brentford side that are 19th for shots conceded over the last six Gameweeks. Kieran Trippier’s (£6.2m) FPL returns have dried up of late but it is worth remembering that just two visiting sides have scored more than one goal at St James’ Park this season – Manchester City (three) and Liverpool (two). He’s still one of Newcastle United’s biggest attacking outlets and I don’t think there is any reason not to pick him just because he is well-owned. If you think he gets points, pick him, don’t look at ownership.

Now, this goes back to the question in hand: are you actually gaining from Trippier considering his effective ownership is likely to be 90% again? If you think Newcastle will keep Spurs out, why not pick another Newcastle defender instead of spreading the risk? The defender pool this week bar Arsenal and Liverpool is sparse and I think if you spot a basket that’s worth putting eggs in, go for it. We have often spoken about ‘basket-wasting’ in the past and the need to pick different players just for the sake of not going ‘all-in’ is incorrect in my opinion. Picking someone like Fabian Schar (£5.1m) alongside Trippier or Tyrick Mitchell (£4.4m) or Marc Guehi (£4.4m) alongside Sam Johnstone (£4.4m) is perfectly fine; I remember I played a Free Hit a couple of seasons ago where I tripled up on the Brighton defence  (against Newcastle, ironically) and it came through.

Q: A Palace midfielder v Dominic Solanke?

FPL review: Solanke injury latest, Bowen off pens 1

(via @DBag_Fantasy)

A: This is a decision I am wrestling with for my own team, as well.

As you can see in the below image, no player across the league has registered more shots in the box (15) or a higher xG non-penalty than Dominic Solanke (£5.5m, 3.24) in their last four matches.

We discussed Free Hit picks Fixture by Fixture on this week’s episode of The FPL Wire. I highly recommend checking it out here:

Good luck and see you next week!

My team this week 1FT 2.4ITB... Raya, Henry, Trippier, Botman, Saka, Martinelli, Kane, Watkins. Benched: Kepa, Estupinan, Shaw, Rashford, Mitoma, Grealish, Haaland.
    A) Shaw->TAA. 9 players this week and use FH34
    B) FH32, use next two transfers for Henry+Saka/Martinelli->TAA+March. Have 8 DGWers + Raya, Trippier and Saka/Kane
In total I get the same amount of games... pros for 32 I can captain Salah while in 34 I might captain Haaland (which I own already) anyways. Pro for 34, slightly more differential and projected more points.

I think they just do that to ease the pressure off Saka. It gets to everyone when the delay is long enough, when the taker has already marked his run up and has to wait & wait for the continual opposition interruptions - look at Haaland last night

haaland has hit some stinkers this season that have some how gone in, wasn't too surprised seeing him do that, even with the delay .

I think it's also the fact that everyone misses eventually, now it seems like players are expected to score every single penalty. I reckon Saka takes the next one and scores it, that being said I'd agree with you that if Jesus was to win the penalty he'll most likely be taking it

"Ollie Watkins (£7.7m), who faces a Brentford side that are 19th for shots conceded over the last six Gameweeks".

That's a lazy stat when Brentford are a) such a Jekkyl and Hyde team for home and away, and b) 4 of their last 6 games were away from GTech.

Shots conceded in last 6 home games far more relevant. For which they are 7th in league.

    1. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

Also they always concede a lot of shots, not just the last 6 weeks (18th for shots conceded over the whole season). But they concede relatively few big chances (9th lowest) - its the gap between these 2 plays into Raya being such a great FPL asset. I'm still picking Watkins though

This. Look at the Newcastle defence last time he scored there:
        Darlow
        Manquillo Lascelles Clark Ritchie

If that was still the case we'd all have Kane

Pretty set on Martinelli, Jesus and Saka (my order of preference) but I think I'll need to be prepared with a backup plan if one is benched. We may get a leak as it's the deadline game.

I think I would pivot to White over Ode due to not many defensive options available.

This is my thinking as well. I guess the fear is rotation with Jota Diaz and Nunez now fit but home to Forest away to West ham and then have a FH in 34 to go Robbo Trent Salah seems like a nice plan. Cheers mate.

I messed up recently. Was leading two cash ML's but didn't have Haaland and stupidly Capt Mahrez (VC Salah) last week and benched Watkins and played double New DF......I know......completely stupid on my behalf lol.

Currently, 118k and about 30 pts off the pace in the ML now.

Arsenal away to City in 33 is the caveat though having 3 Arsenal so kind of siding with Gakpo but rotation risk is the problem there.

I think most people are basing it off the past couple of games. I reckon he could start, could see Klopp mixing it up and rotating the front 3, people also forgetting just how bad Jota was in the first half against Leeds.
