Suspensions

Ivan Toney (£7.3m) won’t play again this calendar year after he was handed an eight-month ban from all football-related activity for breaching Football Association (FA) rules.

The suspension kicks in immediately, meaning that Toney will miss the final two matches of the current campaign.

He’ll not be able to play again until January 17 next season, meaning that he’ll miss at least the first half of 2023/24 and only return after the planned winter break.

He will, however, be permitted to train from mid-September onwards.

Toney was also fined £50,000 by the FA and “warned as to his future conduct”.

The Brentford striker had been charged with 262 breaches of FA betting rules, admitting to 232 of them; the other 30 were dropped.

In response, the Bees hinted that they may appeal:

“Brentford FC is currently awaiting the publication of the written reasons of the independent Regulatory Commission. We will review them before considering our next steps.” – Brentford FC club statement

FPL IMPACT

Mbeumo delivers as Dennis maintains fine form: FPL notes from Brentford v Watford 5

Owned by just under 7.5% of the top 100,000 FPL managers and 26.4% overall (‘ghost’ teams will account for a lot of that figure), Toney is, and probably will finish as, the third highest-scoring forward in FPL.

An impressive 20 Premier League goals helped him to a total of 182 points, averaging at 5.5 per match.

Toney’s absence likely means more game-time for Kevin Schade (£4.9m) and Yoane Wissa (£5.3m) in the run-in, although they will still probably be competing for one spot alongside Bryan Mbeumo (£5.6m) given that Thomas Frank tends to use a 3-5-2 against the so-called ‘bigger’ clubs – and the Bees face Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City in Gameweeks 37 and 38 respectively.

Mbeumo looks set to deputise on penalties and has four attacking returns in three starts without Toney in the side this season.

We’ll take a look through some Toney replacements in a follow-up article but for Members, here are the Rate My Team points projections for £8.0m-and-under forwards for the final two Gameweeks:

Midfield is Salah, Grealish, Mac, Mitoma, Rashford. Don't really wan't to lose any of them but want Bruno.
    A) Drop Mac
    B) Drop Mitoma
    C) Drop Grealish

My 5 in midfield as well. Already have double Utd defence which I won't change, so it would have to be Rashford and for a hit as well. Not sure it's worth it so hold those 5 and hope Bruno flops

Depends on your position and your aims. If you are chasing in ML for example then maybe Salah to Bruno. Salah has tough single game and united have 2 easier fixtures. Could work out nicely. You won’t be captaining Salah anyway so won’t make a world of difference if Salah does indeed score better than Fernandes. Personally I may well make that transfer as 10 points behind in ML so worth a small punt.

      It’s ridiculous

Fa likes to make examples of people for this but other more important issues are rarely penalised as harshly

How about putting a policy in place to prevent the betting companies and pyramid schemes sponsoring football teams harshly if we are talking betting? How about tackling their biggest partner sky and how they promote their own brand of sky betting and manipulate their odds?

Yeah but we can ban a player for 10 months. I don’t know if it’s happening but maybe some guidance and sessions in place to help Toney as he may have a problem?

We did not hear of any discussions of a 'problem' so you are forcing a narrative where there is none. Remember Jose Mourinho on John Terry's bets - 50k is probably like 100 pound for the man on the street. High profile footballers live in different worlds to the average man on the street.

The ban is to set an example and protect the integrity of the game. Otherwise if the ban is too lenient then players would chance it. Betting on getting a yellow in xyz minute etc - particularly those at lower league levels.

And if that happens then such players who 'chance it' are open to pressure from criminal elements and suddenly you have snowball effect. Then the fans, marketeers. sponsors have no trust in the product and start switching. Off suddenly the costs start rising at the higher levels as a result as losses are made etc.

I feel partly to blame I keep Toney instead of going Isak/Wilson against a potential weakened West Ham. He pulls a hamstring. I did not have him for ages in my team, still have him and he finally gets banned.

At least we know that Toney will be great value around February time next season. But it does the raise the question of how Brentford will do without him and any contingency plans they might have.

Already planned to bring in Shaw for Zinc.

    Maybe Mitoma out?

    Raya

    Estupinan / TAA / Shaw

    Odegaard / Mahrez / Salah / Mitoma / Rashford

    Haaland / Isak

    Kepa | Schar | Trippier | Solanke

    What would you do here?

    Steele*
    Fofana* - Estupinan* - Stones* - Dalot*
    Rashford* - Mac10* - Saka - Salah
    Haaland* - Wilson

    Kepa*, Isak, Trippier, Odegaard

    1.2 ITB, 2 FTs

    Issues as I see it:

    1. Fofana, Stones and Dalot not assured of 120+ minutes.
    2. Arsenal have sweet f-all to play for.
    3. Newcastle could roll right over Leicester.
    4. Rashy a big question mark

Would love a City mid, but no idea whom to get. ML rival has Alvarez and Bruno, so doesn't make sense to match her.

Fofana I'm not too fussed about. He's cheap, so selling him does me no favors. Can bench and play Ode or Isak.

Dalot is a bit of a different story. I do agree he probably needs to be one of the transfers out, perhaps for Shaw, even though that does feel a bit lateral.

City plans will be largely affected by the CL match, so waiting for that to make the call, I guess.

  12. Bobby Digital

Thinking about benching Stones and Grealish. They won't play in the second game if they win the Chelsea match now will they? Are Isak and Trippier better options? Hell even VVD might be better with AVL at home.

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 14 days ago

Isak definitely a better shout, unsure on VVD, I think Villa will score but Liverpool have had a bit of charm around their goal of late. Depending on how tonight goes either of Stones or Grealish may actually miss Chelsea and play v Brighton for all we know but it is definitely likely that most popular assets will effectively be SGWers

      1. Bobby Digital
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 14 days ago

Pool have something to play for though. I'm already playing Alisson, so it might be too much to play VVD as well.

          • 5 Years

Yeah I think I would. I'm actually likely going into this double with just Haaland from City, selling Grealish to Bruno. Newcastle at home to Leicester that simply have to pick up a win could well do better than a City player that's likely to start just once

    For third United spot:

    1) DDG, benching Kepa
    2) Bruno, using 2FTs and selling Grealish, Mitoma or Mac

1, using 2FTs for a garbage team is madness

Just have to downgrade some bench and upgrade Bri mid or Grealish

    Kepa
    Estu, Shaw, TAA, Lindelöf
    Rash, Salah, Grealish, Mitoma, MacA
    Haaland

    Raya, Isak, Wilson Tripps

1 FT, 1,0 ITB, should I just roll here or any changes and bench correct? feels weird to bench 3 NewC at home to Leicester

    Cheers

Would not be surprised if Wilson training is managed due his legs being made of glass

In his presser, Howe said that Longstaff was the only player out when asked. He was later asked specifically about Murphy, and said that he was a doubt and joked that he'd forgotten about him when answering the earlier question.

He probably 'forgot' about Wilson in the previous answer too.

          Howe's x-C(rafty) rating rises

    Brighton to rotate further?
    ------

Joel Veltman, Adam Webster, Solly March and Robert Sanchez are all unavailable for the trip to Newcastle.

De Zerbi hints at rotation. ‘We have to think very well about the first XI and the condition of the players. We can't lose anymore players for the last four games. We have to think with attention.’

Sounds like it. Although honestly I'm not sure who else he can really bring in. Due to injuries the likes of Undav, Enciso, Buonanotte and Gilmour are all getting regular starts

Miley has recently been promoted to the first team squad and we're struggling for numbers in central midfield. Whether it's connected to Wilson or not remains to be seen.

A B D = All 100% starts, but Stones isn't guaranteed to play both games...

If Man City have won the league after beating Chelsea, they cud well rest players, so their fresh for the F.A. Cup final =Sat 3rd June = x6 days after their last Premier League game.
