The FFS Pro Pundits 30

What a boring topic for my last piece this season for Fantasy Football Scout. Haven’t we always said we need to attack Double Gameweeks, and that two games are better than one? I guess this is still true but I think we are at a stage where, given how the fixtures have landed and how the template is, I am going to try and make the case that having two free transfers in Gameweek 38 can have a higher potential gain than using one in Gameweek 37. Of course, the usual team-dependent caveats apply…

Gameweek 37 fixtures

Double Gameweek 37 is peculiar in the sense that there are four doubling teams but of them, most managers already own three Brighton players (and if you don’t, it’s perhaps too late anyway) and want none from a Chelsea side who are uninspiring under Frank Lampard and play the two Manchester clubs away. Of course, a punt could work out but not one where I’d particularly look for upside.

This brings us to Manchester City and Manchester United.

Manchester City

By the time Man City walk out on Sunday at the Etihad to play Chelsea, the title could already be theirs – that will happen if Arsenal fail to win away to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The Citizens will seal the title regardless should they, as expected, beat Chelsea. They will be very keen to lift the trophy in their final game at the Etihad anyway, so I’d back them to do so.

This then puts into question their line-up not only for the midweek game versus Brighton but also the Gameweek 38 clash versus Brentford. They do, after all, have two more cup finals subsequently.

Let’s look into their players a bit more:

Top 100k ownership of select Man City players (source: LiveFPL)

  • Haaland: 99.6%
  • Grealish: 39%
  • Ederson: 20%
  • Stones: 17%
  • Mahrez: 12%
  • Alvarez: 6.8%
  • De Bruyne: 5%
  • Gundogan: 0.2%

On the face of it, a City midfielder or Julien Alvarez (£6.0m) does carry a huge upside. However, when you factor in the stupendous but physically intense UEFA Champions League victory over Real Madrid, and possible league title victory on Sunday, working out who starts both the Brighton and Brentford games seems to be a lottery, even more so than usual.

Moreover, it’s the ‘single’ Gameweek 37 options that are in our current teams that are hard to overlook. Can one justify selling a Newcastle striker playing Leicester at home for Alvarez? And then there’s a Liverpool team needing to win every game to have hope of qualifying for the Champions League, who are at home to Villa – would I sell Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) to fund Kevin De Bruyne (£12.2m)? I don’t see a big upside there. Another reason for holding Salah is that in the event Haaland isn’t starting in Gameweek 38, Salah probably becomes the standout captaincy option.

At the back, all City defenders are low-owned – but we are talking low upside. There is no Cancelo-type high-upside defender anymore. Using a transfer to switch out Kieran Trippier (£6.1m), despite Newcastle’s defensive struggles, doesn’t seem worth it to me.

Manchester United

Madrid absolutely bottled it. Pep’s new formation makes it hard for teams to break them down. He is truly a tactical genius.

Expecting Inter’s formation to make things difficult for City, no home advantage too but Inter would need to attack better otherwise City will win the CL & Pep will be so cocky!

Inter's system might have worked against previous Pep teams .. but, like you said, this Man City team is solid defensively.

Inter will be better than Madrid but probably not good enough..

Playing 4 atb at Etihad these days is suicidal. If they wanted to park the bus then they should have parked it well.

Yes I agree, Inter will park the bus well better than Madrid but for how long? they need to be sharper during the transition phase because they can’t park it for 90 minutes, City will find a way! It feels like they don’t have pacy players at Inter to get it done but I believe they could hurt City from set pieces also it’s the final, no home advantage so there is that fear if Inter score first.

yea very similar unfortunately 🙁 I think he'll try to anticipate my moves as well..i guess bruno seems like the best punt.. something like marti + mings to bruno + 3.8 defender? Or get rid of White?

              Foden(C) or Marehz(C) worth a punt too.

    I've got FH to use:
    1. GW37 or
    2. GW38?

I have Salah, KdB already. Rashford form is questionable let alone fitness and their attack isn't winning me over entirely:
    A. Rashford + Wilson > Martial + Fernandes
    B. Wilson + Mitoma (form not good) > Enciso + Fernandes
    C. Rashford > Mahrez

    1. Tinkermania

KDB isn't exactly tearing up trees. 3 points in last 4 game weeks.

I got him in for the Arsenal demolition, so while the past few have been less profitable, this Chelsea game and equally Brighton game are games he excels in.

I wouldn't get him in otherwise.

It's a nice team but with FH I would have 3 City attackers Halaand, Mahrez & Alvarez with DDG in goal.

Mitoma, Rashford & Isak go, budget bench ... even Salah may get the chop to spread cash

So if you're already set up for DGW37, like many template/content creator followers are, don't chase random double players just out of FOMO. If you can, having 2FTs for GW38 might be good for some end of season punts.

Depends who is 1st on your bench and who you would bring in for a hit. I would be inclined to just start him.

Different positions, who are the alternatives i.e. If you go with Grealish who is the FWD and vice versa for Enciso

Yes that's the problem many of us Grealish owners are left with isn't it? If Rashford is fit then he is a good in for him. However I still would have a who to bench problem. It is just so tight at the top in my mini league one move could decide it. My opponents have Rashford and no Grealish. They also both have Wilson and I have Isaac. I could just roll bench Grealish and hope he doesn't get meaningful minutes. He probably starts v Chelsea though?

I must be one of the few people that doesn't own Rashford. Midfield is Salah Mitoma McAllister Bruno Grealish.

Assuming that we get the all clear, do I do:

    A. Salah > Rashford
    B. Grealish > Rashford
    C. Roll FT
